Jonathan Bennett

Jonathan Bennett, 76, husband of Henrietta Pompey Bennett, died Wednesday night, Nov. 17, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born June 19, 1928, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James Bennett and Irene Reid Bennett. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Pine Grove AME Church. After relocating to Philadelphia, Pa., he united with the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. He retired from ITE Circuit Breaker Co. after 33 years. He was a member of the Shriners and past grand master of the St. John Lodge No. 44. Upon returning to South Carolina, he joined the Pride of Forreston. After marriage, he joined LaMott AME Church.

Survivors besides his wife, Henrietta P. Bennett of the home, include three daughters, Linda, Gail and Jacqueline; two grandsons, Robert and Julian; four sisters, Queenie (Chester) Pompey, Ella Bennett, Leona (Joseph) Robinson and Creola (Paul) Newman; three aunts, Sarah Bradley, Rosa Frierson and Lila Crawford; and one uncle, Richard Reid.

He was preceded in death by a brother, George, and a sister, Shirley.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 at Pine Grove AME Church in Greeleyville, with the Rev. Melvin Wilson, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Rufus Gaymon and Frances Gathers.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery with military detail.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

James Allan Brookes

J. Allan Brookes, age 95, beloved husband of Helen B. King-Brookes for eight beautiful years, entered into eternal paradise Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

J. Allan was the son of the late James Brookes and Mary Elizabeth Purseglove Brookes. He was born into the Episcopal faith, the Parish church in the Parish of Handsworth Woodhouse, a coal mining community near Sheffield, England, on Dec. 31, 1908.

J. Allan came to America at the tender age of 4 so that his father could follow the trade of J. Allan’s grandfather in the coal mines located in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky.

He rode a train to attend Belaire High School and graduated from Tri-State University of Engineering, located in Angola, Ind., with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1930. J. Allan was a noted member of Tri-State Legacy Club, an honor bestowed upon him to show Tri-State’s appreciation for his generosity in establishing the J. Allan Brookes scholarship fund to provide a solid education and make a difference in someone else’s life.

Impressed with the trade of his father and grandfather, he took a position with Duquesne Light Company’s Warwick Mines. He became associated with Pecand’s Mather in 1946 and, at retirement, held the position of general manager of coal operations and his duties included locating and engineering coal properties and the construction and operations of deep mines in this country and abroad.

Another title held by J. Allan was director emeritus of the Gallatin Bank in Pennsylvania, where he was a director for 23 years. He also served as director and vice president of the Board of Jefferson National Bank before it was acquired by Gallatin Bank. He also served on the advisory board of Penn State Fagette Campus for an extended time.

J. Allan was active in many Masonic and civic organizations. He became a Mason on Sept. 7, 1944, at Valley Lodge No. 459, Masontown, Pa. He served as master of this lodge in 1950 and received his 50 year pin in 1994. J. Allan was the oldest living past master of his lodge for 54 years. He was a Shriner and member of the Syria Shrine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S at Cheswick, Pa. J. Allan was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Uniontown, Pa., and the Council Chapter Consistory, Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Pittsburgh and Uniontown Lodge of Perfection 14 Degree, Uniontown, Pa. He was honored with life memberships from Syria Shrine Temple, Valley Lodge No. 459, and the Scottish Rite. He received an honorary life membership from Sumter Lodge No. 364 A.F.M., Sumter, in 1998.

J. Allan was active in Boy Scout work and was awarded the Silver Beaver for his endeavors. He also was a former member of the Rotary Club and a current member of Kiwanis. He was a member of Sunset Country Club and the Godfather’s Golfing Group. He also enjoyed his designation as a Tennessee Squire and he was grateful to Governor Brenthitt for making him a Kentucky Colonel for the part he played in advancing coal mining in that state.

J. Allan was an elder emeritus in Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania. Upon relocating to Sumter in 1980, he joined First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Richard L. Brookes and his wife, Jean, of Sumter; extended family members are Charles and Joan Gibbs, Sharon Brunson, all of Sumter, Matt and Michel Brunson of Pinewood, Lewis and Lisa Brunson of Manning; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one niece, Mary Hillis Pierrier of Pittsburgh; and two cousins, Margarite Weimer and her husband, Dr. Bob Weimer, of Greenwich, Conn., and Col. David Purseglove and his wife, Paula, of Palm Desert, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Hillis C. Brookes; his second wife, Mary Pollock Brookes; one brother, Kenneth David Brookes; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Brookes.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 17, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Sumter with the Rev. Dr. William Holmes and the Rev. Dr. Zane Moore officiating.

Burial was in Smithfield, Pa.

James Wesly Brunson

James Wesly Brunson, 76, husband of Ann Lumpkin Brunson, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004, in Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson.

Born May 6, 1928, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Harry S. Brunson, Sr. and the late Sarah Jeanette Pringle Brunson. He was first married to the late Lois Hodge Brunson and then to the late Jackie Wylie Brunson. He was retired from Manning Tractor Company after 40 years, a U. S. Army Veteran of WWII, a member of American Legion Williams-Burgess Post #68, VFW, and a member of New Harmony Presbyterian Church in Alcolu.

Surviving besides his wife of Alcolu, are a son, Mark Alan Brunson of Alcolu; a daughter, Sandra B. (Hank) Edens of Dalzell; daughter-in-law, Kathy R. Brunson of Alcolu; two stepdaughters, Vicki (Drew) Lofton of Myrtle Beach and Linda (David) Neely of New Port Richey, FL; two stepsons, Charles (Patti) Wylie of W. Virginia and Plowden Nelson of Pensacola, FL; a brother, Harry S. Brunson, Jr., of Sumter; two sisters, Carolyn B. Haley and Sarah R. Brewer, both of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Wesley Brunson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, in New Harmony Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John R. Dodd officiating.

Burial followed in Brunson Cemetery in Sumter County.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Midstate S. C. Chapter, P. O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202-7044 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Martha Ann M. Owens

Martha Ann Mouzon Owens, 55, wife of James Owens, died Nov. 15, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Feb. 10, 1949, in Manning, she was a daughter of Sallie Williams Mouzon and the late Rev. Johnny Mouzon Sr. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, graduating from Manning Training School. In her youth, she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Manning. Later in age, she joined Fellowship Baptist Church on Huggins Street. She was a chef at the Wee Academy on Sunset and Huggins streets.

Survivors besides her husband, James E. Owens of Newark, N.J., and mother, Sallie W. Mouzon of the home, include two sons, Derrick Owens of Newark and Dennis (Natasha) Owens of Manning; three brothers, Robert (Mary) Mouzon and the Rev. Jonathan (Beatrice) Mouzon, both of Manning, Walter (Miriam) Mouzon of Stratford, Conn.; two sisters, Mary (Moses) Wright of Manning and Deloris (Jim) Ganzy of Winter Haven, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Mouzon Jr.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson, assisted by the Revs. Curtis Cantey, Carnell Witherspoon and Eddie Lesaine.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Mae Bell Smith

Mae Bell Smith, 70, wife of Charles Earl Smith, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Aug. 26, 1934, in Chesterfield, she was a daughter of the late John and Nettie Jones Wright. She was a former waitress and cook and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides her husband of West Columbia are a daughter, Brenda (Kyle) Hanna of Gulfport, Miss.; a son, Donald Whittington of McHenry, Miss.; two brothers, Frank Wright of Kershaw and Edward Wright of Jefferson; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, in Shiloh United Methodist Church in West Columbia with the Rev. Michael Smith officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Church, 547 Gardner’s Terrace, West Columbia, S.C. 29172.

Sadie Snyder

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Sadie Carter Reid Snyder, 78, wife of Henry Snyder and widow of Henry Reid, died Friday night, Dec. 3, 2004, at Einstein North Division Hospital in Philadelphia.

Born May 23, 1926, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Carter and Katie Bennett Carter. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Pine Grove AME Church in Greeleyville. She enjoyed cooking and baking and she was also an avid sports show watcher.

Survivors besides her husband include one son, Jerome Reid of Greeleyville; two stepsons, Durant (Shirley) Reid of Florence and Clayton (Sandra) Reid of Greeleyville; two daughters, Rebecca Hill and Hattie White, both of Philadelphia; one stepdaughter, Juanita Brown of Philadelphia; 20 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one of her children and four stepchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Pine Grove AME Church in Greeleyville, with the Rev. Moses Wilson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Fred Snyder.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Helen B. Butler

MANHATTAN, N.Y. – Helen Briggs Butler, 81, widow of Byron Briggs, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at her residence in Manhattan.

A daughter of the late Joe Briggs and Frizel Olive Briggs, she was born May 13, 1923, in Clarendon County. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she was a member of Historical Liberty Hill AME Church. After relocating to New York, she joined Mount Bethel AME Church, where she served in various organizations.

Survivors include one daughter, Frizel Briggs of Bronx, N.Y.; one adopted daughter, Carrie (Albert) Brailsford of Sumter; two grandchildren, Eurydice and Lewis Mangual, both of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Briggs and Bell Briggs, both of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at Historical Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Melvin Capers officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

John H. Fleming

John Haddon Fleming, age 87, died Dec. 15, 2004, in a Florence hospital, after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William Edward Fleming and Lula Haddon Fleming. He was a retired farmer and was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Gibbons Fleming.

Surviving are his wife, Hallie Atkinson Fleming of New Zion; a son, John W. Fleming and his wife, Betty W. Fleming, of New Zion; a stepdaughter, Greta Monson of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren, William Tal (Laura) Fleming, Jonathan W. (Ellen) Fleming, Joshua C. Fleming and Ashley C. Fleming; two great-grandchildren, Zane Fleming and Christine Fleming; two stepgrandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial was in the Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Memorials be made to Midway Presbyterian Church or Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Gracie C. Stukes

Gracie Clark Stukes, 66, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 21, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Erbie Clark and Louise Cooper Clark. Gracie was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir and missionary department. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star New Light Chapter No. 254 and the YWCA Lodge.

Survivors include her husband, Lendburg Stukes of the home; three sons, Lionel (Glinn) Stukes and Elvin (Velecia) Stukes, both of Summerton, and David (Karen) Stukes of Miami, Fla.; three daughters, Arthelia (Johnny) Waiters and Jacqueline (Nathaniel) Hillard, both of Summerton, and Linda (Charlie) Stukes of Manning; three brothers, Howard and Ruben Clark of Buffalo, N.Y., and Perlie Clark of Manning; two sisters, Doris C. Williams of Miami, Fla., and Mildred Chick of New Jersey; 13 grandchildren, one of whom she reared as her own, Rodney (Christina) Stukes of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lonnie Robinson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.
