Travis E. Boan

BISHOPVILLE – Travis Eugene Boan, age 60, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005.

Travis was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Harold Eugene and Laura Alice Rhodes Boan. He was employed with Kawashima Textile in Lugoff and he was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Rhodes Boan of Bishopville; daughters, Marsha Wyatt, Libby and Barbara Boan, all of Bishopville; sisters, Miriam Hinkle of Johnson City, Tenn., and Martha McCall of Alcolu; one brother, Jimmy Boan of Hartsville; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. Tyrone Mitchum and the Rev. Hazel Mixon officiated.

Burial was in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery.

Norton Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Luetissue Ann S. Baxter

Luetissue Ann Sweat Baxter, 62, wife of the late Jasper Baxter Jr., died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 21, 1942, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Billie Nelson and Mattie Sweat Rawlinson and stepdaughter of the late Rev. Elmer Rawlinson.

Baxter received a formal education at Manning Training School.

In her youth, Mrs. Baxter joined Mt. Zero Baptist Church.

She was employed at Sunbeam Corp. of Manning and later employed at Gardner Taxi Co. of Kingstree.

Surviving are one son, Jasper Baxter Jr. of Manning; seven daughters, Francena (Levan) Hilton, Annette, Lutrisha, Shirley, Elizabeth, Cynthia and Sylvia Baxter, all of Manning; four brothers, Eugene Sweat, Wilbert (Bonnie) Rawlinson, Clinton Rawlinson and Evon Rawlinson, all of Manning; two sisters, Mattie (Rufus) Conyers and Eliza (Chapell) Witherspoon Jr., both of Manning; 23 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, J.W. Rawlinson and Edmund Rawlinson.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church in the Paxville Community of Manning with the Rev. Henry Pressley, pastor, officiating, assisted the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, Evangelist Elizabeth Richburg, and Minister Jerry Johnson.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC. of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Lee Burgess

Rosa Lee “Bunch” Burgess, daughter of the late Davis Moore and Dessie Moore, was born May 28, 1934, in Clarendon County. She entered eternal rest Dec. 28, 2004, at Hopewell Nursing Facility, Sumter.

Rosa Lee, “Bunch,” as she was affectionately called, attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. At an early age, she joined St. Michael Baptist Church in Kingstree, where she attended and raised her children until moving to Largo, Fla., for a number of years. Upon returning to South Carolina, Rosa Lee rededicated her life to Christ and the church by joining St. Paul Holiness Church in Sumter (under the leadership of Elder Mark Pierson and Pastor Shirley Holliday), where she raised her granddaughter, Selena.

She worked faithfully in the community as a solo gospel singer, where her most requested song was, “It’s a Blessing to be in the Church One More Time.” Rosa Lee also formed a gospel group and managed her daughters and other young ladies from her community by taking them to churches to sing.

Her final church home was under the leadership of her daughter and son-in-law, Pastors Jerry and Emma Wells, at Praise Tabernacle Evangelistic Ministries in Sumter. She served there as church mother until her health failed. She was lovingly and unselfishly cared for by her daughters, Linda and Carolyn, in Linda’s home.

Her memories will always be cherished by her children, Leroy Moore of New Haven, Conn., Linda (Glenn) McKenzie of Sumter, Emma (Jerry) Wells of Denton, Texas, Carolyn (Johnny) Roseman of Sumter, Theodore Burgess of Sumter, Terrance Burgess of New London, Conn., and Larry Burgess of Sumter; two brothers, Maxie McFadden Sr. of Darlington and David Moore Jr. of New Haven, Conn.; one sister, Elizabeth (Jerry) Barno of Easton, Pa.; two granddaughters she raised as her own, Selena (Greg) Wells of Clarksville, Tenn., and Alish Burgess of Sumter; two spiritual sons, Derrick Nelson and Joe Stephens, both of Sumter; three spiritual daughters, Debra McFadden, and nieces, Lillie Barno and Mary Robinson, both of Sumter; a best friend, Ruth Jackson; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of other nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends.

Rosa Lee was preceded in death by a daughter, Annette Phillips; and two brothers, Douglas Moore and Joshua McFadden.

Services were held on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at St. Paul Holiness Church, with Minister James Drayton officiating, assisted by Evangelist Maurice Wells, Evangelist Rosemary Drayton, Pastor Emma Wells and Pastor Shirley Holiday.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph L. Christmas

Joseph L. Christmas, 82, husband of Carrie Rogers Christmas, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at his home.

Born in Lee County, he was the son of the late Jessie Thomas Christmas and the late Catherine Vermell Berry Christmas.

Mr. Christmas was retired from Carolina Furniture Works with 48 years of service and he attended Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years; four sons, J.M. (Sharon) Christmas of Sumter, Herbert Lavon (Jessie) Christmas of Gable, Calvin Wayne (Ann) Christmas of Sumter and Bobby J. (Paulette) Christmas of Sumter; a brother, Ernest Christmas of Spartanburg; 14 grandchildren, Becki McDaniel, Denise Christmas, Yvonne Behney, Janet Hardee, Jeanna Greene, Andria Turner, Gisella Lockman, Celeste Christmas, Ashleigh Keister, Calvin Christmas, Gabriel Christmas, Missie Nance, Mark Christmas and Jay Christmas; 17 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Christmas was preceded in death by three brothers, Eddie, Audrey and Duncan Christmas; and three grandchildren, Bobby J. Christmas Jr., Sonya Kaye Christmas and John Michael Christmas.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Elaine Nero and Deborah Cox for their service.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Driggers officiating.

Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, West Calhoun Street, Sumter S.C. 29150 or Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 1931, Sumter S.C. 29151.

Learnest Conyers Sr.

Learnest “Vene” Conyers Sr., 74, husband of Ethel Virginia Prince Conyers, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Sept. 22, 1930, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Tillie Conyers and Oree Canty Conyers. He obtained his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Macedonia Baptist Church. After moving to Troy, N.Y., he joined Bethel Baptist Church, where he served on the Men Choir and Gospelaries Choir. He retired from Allegeny Ludlum Steel Company after 33 years. After retirement he moved back to Manning and worked with Clarendon County for five years and reunited with Macedonia Baptist Church and served on the Trustee Board and all choirs and the Gospel Train.

Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Bernard Conyers of Albany, N.Y., and Learnest (Barbra) Conyers Jr. of Las Vegas, N.V.; two brothers, Alphonso (Julia) Conyers and James E. Conyers, both of Manning; five sisters, Jerlean Conyers of Sumter, Bobbie (Daniel) Walker of Orangeburg and Diane (Raymond) York, Judy C. McCray and Lillie Mae Hilton, all of Manning; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Macedonia Baptist Church, Raccoon Road, Jordan, with the Rev. Jonathan Mouzon, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, the Rev. Eloise Pompey, Elder Shirley Williams and Elder Joe Cantey.

Burial was in State Cemetery in the Jordan community.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

John W. Floyd Sr.

John William “J.W.” Floyd Sr., 69, husband of Marianne Campbell Floyd, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at his home in Gable.

Born March 6, 1935, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Carson L. and Lydia Robinson Floyd. He was a retired salesman for Carolina Coca-Cola Bottling in Sumter and a member of First Assembly of God in Sumter.

Surviving besides his wife of Gable are two sons, John William “Bill” Floyd Jr. and wife, Lynn, of Georgetown and David C. Floyd of Gable; and two grandchildren, Brett William Floyd and John Owen Floyd.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Phil Simun officiating.

Burial followed in Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery in Barrineau.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to a charity of one’s choice.

John Charles Geary Jr.

John Charles Geary Jr., 57, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004.

Born in Hazleton, Pa., he was a son of Rita Dowgala Geary and the late John C. Geary Sr. An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a 1965 graduate of W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax, Va., and in 1978 obtained his bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. He was registered as a professional engineer in South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia; and obtained registration with the American Institute of Certified Planners. He was a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, S.C. and Southern Sections, and of the American Planning Association. He was a Senior Traffic Engineer with Wilbur Smith Associates where he was employed for 26 years, during which time he completed assignments on location in Kuwait, Jordan, Palestine, Barbados, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Island, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana, Indonesia and Bulgaria, among others. He was a certified scuba diver and held various pilots licenses, including a CFII license.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Epps Geary, mother, Rita Geary of Bradenton, Fla.; sister, Sharon Barnett of Bradenton, Fla.; brother, Tom Geary of St. Louis, Mo.; and adopted dog, Anna Banana.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at the Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia.

Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Samuel A. Odom

Samuel Alexander Odom, 17, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2008.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Al and Sharon Poulos Odom. Sam was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church. He was a rising senior at Chapin High School.

Survivors other than his parents of Chapin include a brother, Dane Odom; two sisters, Anna Odom and McKinley Odom; maternal grandparents, William and Betty Poulos of Sumter; and paternal grandparents, Lester R. Odom Jr. of Alcolu and Martha Jane Odom of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008 at Crosspoint Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Fishers of Men Ministries, 385 E. Emerald Lake Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Junius H. Bryant

Junius “Henry” Bryant, 67, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at his daughter’s home in Olanta.

Born Jan 25, 1942, in Manning, he was the son of the late Junius Hampton and Isabelle B. Bryant. He was married to the late Betty Bryant, was employed at Aircap for 27 years, retired from Midwest Stamping after 10 years and was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Norma Jean (J. M.) McKenzie of Olanta, and Lisa (Michael) Casselman of Andrews; a son, Junius H. “Bubba” Bryant Jr. of Turbeville; two brothers, Robert (Christine) Bryant of Manning, and Harry Lee Bryant of Manning; two stepsons, Richie (Marie) Allen of Columbia, and Donnie (Debbie) Allen of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Barbara Bodenheimer of Manning; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Richard Hudson officiating.

Burial followed in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bryan McKenzie, Jimmy Coker, Jason Floyd, Joe Bryant, Sphinks Bryant and Laurence Bryant.

Memorials may be made to Agape Hospice, 3503 W. Turbeville Highway, Lake City, S.C. 29560.
