Wayne White

Wayne White, 49, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009.

Born May 5, 1959, in Norwalk, Conn., he was a son of Rozeal White-Brown and the late John White Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Rozeal White-Brown; son, Wayne Jones; three brothers, Edward, Tyshawn and Kenneth White; five sisters, Flora Jean White, Felicia Daniels, Genise Laws, Kenisha White and Tyshika White; his maternal grandmother, Elizebeth Franklin, all of Alcolu; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Hayes F. and LaNelle J. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning. The Rev. Dennis Brock officiated.

Burial was in Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Muldrow Mills Sr.

COLUMBIA – Muldrow “Buzz” Mills Sr., 85, husband of Helen Snyder Mills, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009.

Born Aug. 14, 1923, in Kingstree, S.C., he was the son of the late Roland Dow and Emma Burgess Mills.
Mr. Mills was educated in the public schools in Kingstree and graduated from the College of Charleston in 1947 with a B.S. degree in chemistry. While attending the College of Charleston, he was listed in the “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges” and was president of the student body. He was president of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina, where he graduated from the School of Law in 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and entered the F.B.I. as a special agent in 1949. He retired in 1975 to become an assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina. In 1982, he accepted a position with the Nuclear Division of the S.C. Electric and Gas Company and retired in 1988 to practice law. He was admitted to the S.C. Bar, the U.S. District Court of South Carolina and the U.S. Court of Appeals Fourth Circuit.

Mr. Mills was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the F.B.I. and a longtime member of Forest Lake Country Club where he was an active tennis player for many years.

He was an active member of Washington Street United Methodist Church for which he served on several committees and boards and taught senior high and adult Sunday School classes for many years. He was also a member of the Traxler Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Snyder Mills; sons Randy S. (Carol) Mills of Conyers, Ga. and M. Burgess (Frances) Mills of Columbia; daughter Nyla Mills (Robert) Laney of Columbia; eight grandchildren, Brock Laney, Jordan Laney, M. Burgess Mills III, William Mills, Sally Mills, John Mills, Steven Mills and Caroline Mills.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at Washington Street United Methodist Church.

Burial was private.

Memorials may be made to Washington Street United Methodist Church, 1401 Washington Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201 or a charity of one’s choice.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Anthony S. McFadden

ROME, N.Y. – Anthony Sadare McFadden, 30, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Rome Memorial Hospital, Rome.

Born Jan. 23, 1979, in Sumter, he was a son of Robert and Sylvia Witherspoon McFadden. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Friendship Baptist Church and later he joined Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church, where he was active in the Sunday school, YPCA. He graduated from Watertown High School, Watertown. After graduation, he entered Job Corps and was certified as a chef.

Survivors are his parents, Robert and Pastor Sylvia Witherspoon McFadden of New Zion; son, Anthony Sadare McFadden Jr. of Watertown; biological father, Donald McKenzie of New Zion; sister, Kenya McFadden; brother, Robert McFadden; three adopted sisters, Sonya E. Rickett of Turbeville, Elder Geretta (Sterling) Smith and Trish (Dell) Bean, both of Augusta, Ga.; adopted brother, Jeffery Roach of Killen, Texas; half-brother, Donmonte Felder of Turbeville; grandparents, Lottie Witherspoon of Turbeville, Emma McFadden of Lake City and Donald McKenzie Sr. of New Zion.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Hickory Grove Church Road, Turbeville, with Elder Ronnie McFadden, pastor, presiding, Elder Willie J. Witherspoon, eulogist, assisting Elder Donald Lowery, Prophet Richard Grate, Prophet Lorenzo Green and Evangelist Rhonda Keels.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Willie J. Frierson

Willie James Frierson, 60, husband of Eva Pringle Frierson, died Feb. 14, 2009, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.

Born Jan. 22, 1949, in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James Henry and Florine Bradley Frierson. He was a 1968 graduate of Manning Training School, Manning. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Holly Hill Baptist Church and later he joined Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a trustee and later he became chairman of the trustee board. He was also a member of the Spring Hill Lodge No. 188 PHA F&AM. He was employed with Martin Brothers Trucking Co. of Summerton.

Survivors are his wife, Eva Pringle Frierson of the home; two daughters, Norma (Jack) Smiling and Lanette (Andrew) Taylor, both of Manning; two brothers, Daniel (Lucille) Bradley of Glenn Brunie, Md., and Henry (Densie) Frierson of Manning; mother-in-law, Annie Ruth Pringle of Manning; four grandchildren reared in the home, Taquarius, Kishanna Pringle, T’Keyah Frierson and Tazhaune Smiling, all of Manning; and a great-grandchild, Zorhiana Nevaeh Pringle.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, with Elder Renel Trevol, pastor, officiating, Evangelist Deborah Trevol, presiding, assisting the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Herbert Brock

Herbert Brock, 83, widower of Lula Dingle Brock, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at Lake Marion Nursing Home, Summerton.

He was a son of the late Hubert and Mary Lemon Brock. He received his formal education at Rosenwald School. In his life, he sought the need for a personal Savior and joined Society Hill AME Church. He retired after 45 years with Santee Cooper Corp.

Survivors are six sons, Joseph (Shirley) Brock of Detroit, Charles Brock of Manning, Jerome and Clyde Brock of Decatur, Ga., Alexander (Maxine) Brock of Covington, Ga., and Jerome (Cecelia) Pearson of Wayne, N.J.; six daughters, Carolyn Brock, Rosa Lee (Joe) Hilton Jr., Frances Brock and Mary Ida (Albert) McKinney, all of Manning, Alice Stene (Alvin) Johnson of Summerton and Daisey (Emanuel) Brunson Sr. of Durham, N.C.; three sisters, Lottie (George) Pompey of Manning, Pauline (Earl) Lemon and Martha Jones, both of Opa Locka, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Society Hill AME Church in Manning, with the Rev. Malachi Gibson, pastor, officiating, Evangelist Shirley Waiters, presiding, assisting the Revs. O’Donald Dingle, Leroy Green and Sam Miller.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Frank Bennett

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Frank Bennett died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, in Buffalo.

He was born Jan. 11, 1938, in Clarendon County, a son of the late John Henry Sr. and Sarah Canty Bennett. Mr. Bennett was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Antioch UME Church in Rimini. He moved to New York more than 50 years ago and joined Jordan River Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Loretta Bennett of the home; two sons, Frank Bennett Jr. and Tyrone Bennett, both of Buffalo, N.Y.; three daughters, Lorenett Bennett of Buffalo, Shirley Bennett and Sandra Bennett, both of Columbia; a brother, John H. Bennett Jr. of Buffalo; two sisters, Sarah Torrance of Buffalo and Julia T. Lang of Rimini; and a host of grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Jordan River Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Gray, pastor, officiating.

Gary B. Taylor

Gary Bernard Taylor, 46, of Chesterfield, Va., departed this life suddenly on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at the Southside Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 9, 1960, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to David Taylor Jr. and the late Alethia Brown Taylor. He received his early education in the Brooklyn Public School System.

As a child, the family moved to Manning and there Gary graduated from the Manning High School, where he was an outstanding member of the football team. He then matriculated at the Saint Pauls’ College, where he was a business management major. While at SPU, Gary was a lieutenant in the JRTC and became a proud member of the Delta Lamba Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Gary received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. He was also a Free and Accepted Mason, Prince Hall Affiliation. In 1979, while at Saint Pauls’ College, he met Shelia Jones and in 1988, they joined in holy matrimony and began a life full of love and wonderful memories to cherish in years to come. Gary devoted his entire life to helping people with disabilities, and did it with a heartfelt passion. He was a dedicated employee with Good Neighbors Group Home Inc.

He was preceded in death by two children, Kimari A. Taylor and Ashanti K. Taylor; and a brother, Wayne Taylor.

He leaves to treasure a rich legacy, his devoted wife of 19 years, Shelia Taylor; his loving children, Shakira E. Taylor, Saidah I. Taylor and David Taylor III, all of Chesterfield; his father, David Taylor Jr. of Alcolu; one brother, Greg (Yolanda) Taylor of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Cynthia Taylor of Columbia; three brothers-in-law, James (Ola) Jones of Amelia; Clinton and Gary Jones of Ford; a sister-in-law, Venita (André) Batts of Dinwiddie; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, to include a devoted niece, Christina Taylor; and many caring neighbors and friends, to include two devoted friends, Thomasine Baxter and Tythus Kimbrough.

A celebration of love and life for Gary was held on Thursday, March 22, 2007, at the Mount Poole Baptist Church, Ford, Va.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Vitalis G. Viavoda

COLUMBIA – A memorial service for Vitalis Gerald “Jerry” Viavoda, 68, was held on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Vitalis died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007.

Born in Derby, Conn., he was a son of the late Vitalis Peter and Josephine Balsis Viavoda. He retired from McEntire Air National Guard Base as a senior master sergeant, having served with the 169th Tactical Squadron and survived Desert Storm. Mr. Viavoda was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a private pilot and a member of RC Flyers Club. Mr. Viavoda was an avid golfer and fisherman and a past president of Camp Swampy Bass Masters.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Thelma Carson Viavoda of Columbia; children, Deana Vicki Jeffreys of Manning and Jerry Lane Viavoda of Sumter; stepchildren, Terry Lynn Negron of New Port Richey, Fla., Sherry Yvette Eisenhower of Columbia and Bruce Allen Drawdy Jr. of Spring Hill, Fla.; brothers, Richard Viavoda of Columbia and Philip Viavoda of Seymour, Conn.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dunbar Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Johnny M. James Sr.

Johnny Marten James Sr., 76, husband of Ruth Lee Prosser James, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at Regency Hospital in Florence.

Born Nov. 1, 1931, in Manning, he was a son of the late Willie Leard James Sr. and the late Mary Sylvester James. He was a self-employed farmer and store owner. He was a former member of the Clarendon County Rescue Squad, where he served as treasurer.

Surviving are his wife of Manning; three sons, Johnny Marten James Jr., William Matthew James and Robert Leard James, all of Manning; two daughters, Mary Carren James and Catherine Ellen James of Manning; a brother, Warren Oliver James of Manning; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Leard James Jr. and Asbury Cecil James.

Private family services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, in Rehobeth Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Rehobeth Cemetery, c/o Pamela J. James, 11031 Hwy. 260, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Francina A. Talford

Francina Alicia Talford, 34, entered into eternal rest on Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, N.J.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of Fannie B. Caldwell Talford and the late Amzi Talford.

Ms. Talford attended Mabel Dean Bacon Vocational High School. She continued her education at Hunter College and then Middlesex County Technical School in New Jersey, where she received her diploma in practical nursing. She was employed at The Elms of Cranbury Nursing Home, Cranbury, N.J.

She leaves to cherish many memories and mourn her passing, her mother, Fannie B. Caldwell Talford of Manning; a daughter, Brianna Talford of Manning; four brothers, Erik Talford of Brooklyn, David Talford of Bronx, N.Y., and David and Joseph Liggins, both of Manning; and other close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 1, 2007, at the Dyson’s Home for Funerals chapel with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson officiating.

Final resting place was Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Summerton.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals was in charge of the arrangements.

David E. Harrison

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of David Elester Harrison, companion of Brenda Merritt, on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

Born Aug. 13, 1951, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Harold Harrison and Odessa McFadden Harrison Scott; stepson of the late Roosevelt Scott; and the brother of Lucy (Ernest) Cooper.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at Olivet Baptist Church, 3500 Edmondson Ave., Baltimore. A wake will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
