Claude W. Warr Jr.

Claude W. Warr Jr., husband of Mayes Pringle Warr, died Wednesday afternoon, March 5, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 23, 1933, in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Claude W. Warr and the late Idella Blackmon Warr. He moved to Sumter County when he was three years old. He graduated from Edmunds High School in 1951 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Carolina in 1955. He taught at Pinewood High School; Furman High School, where he coached the girls’ basketball team; and retired from Alice Drive Middle School. During the span of his teaching career, he taught English, French, history, math, science and social studies. In addition, he learned to read and write Braille and taught blind students after school.

Mr. Warr was a charter member of Lemira Presbyterian Church when it was formed in 1948. He served the church as deacon for many years and was ordained an elder in 1996. At the time of his death, he was clerk of the session and a ruling elder.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mayes Pringle Warr of Gable; a son, Wade Hartwell (Melinda) Warr of Alcolu; two grandchildren, Lewis Hartwell Warr and Caroline Idella Mayes Warr of Alcolu; a brother, John Heyward (Joline) Warr of Sumter; two sisters, Christine Barnhart of Sumter and Lois (Mick) Coster of Travelers Rest; two nieces, Christy Gardner of Manning and Ashley Coster of Indianapolis, Ind.; a nephew, Jason Coster of Travelers Rest; a sister-in-law, Faith Pringle of Bamberg; an aunt, Lissie Blackmon of Sumter; and a great niece, Katherine Gardner of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Brian Peake, Dan Rowton and Bob Slimp and Dr. Bill Barton officiating.

Burial followed in Concord Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Johnny Boykin, David Boyce, Robert Compton, Dan Lyles, Swain Miles and Steve Welch.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Black, Dr. Ernest McDowell, Dr. Henry Moses, Richard Moses, Jack Miles, John Miles, Anthony Shepard, Mac Sprott, Bobby White, Ed Chappel, Ronnie Watts, Robert Smith and the deacons and elders of Lemira Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to Lemira Presbyterian Church, c/o Dot Herring, 122 Adams Ave., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore Cannon Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Lorene Floyd

Lorene Floyd, 89, of Turbeville, died March 3, 2008, at a Florence nursing facility after an illness.

Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Manning Lynch and Hattie Lucille Norton Lynch. Mrs. Floyd was retired from SkyLine Manufacturing Co. after 20 years of service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Turbeville, where she was a member of the Ladies Circle of the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Floyd; a daughter, Patricia Ann Floyd; a sister, Fannie Mae Rhinehart; and a brother, Woodrow Lynch.

She is survived by five daughters, Sylvis Floyd, Linda (Thomas) Robinson and Natalie (Garland) Baker, all of Turbeville, Shannon (Rotha) Turner of Sumter and Gail (Gary) Danner of Ridgeway; a son, Jimmy Wells Floyd of Sumter; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Turbeville.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Lizzie L. Evans

Lizzie Lowery Evans, 69, died on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, after a brief illness at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, N.Y.

Born in Lee County on Feb. 19, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Lowery Jr. and Lizzie Van Buren Lowery. She was also the wife of Joseph Evans. Lizzie, affectionately known as “Liz” to most, but to certain nephews and nieces she was known as “Goodie” because of her special ability to keep the family together. Liz, the oldest of all the children, had always been the mother figure, since the passing of her mother at an early age.

After marriage, she and her husband, Joseph, moved to Florida for approximately three years, where she was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Finally, after settling in New York, she attended services regularly at The St. Stephens Baptist Church.

Loving memories for Liz will always be cherished by her caring and devoted husband, Joseph Evans of New York; six sisters, Ruth (Thomas) McKnight of New York, Bessie (Early) Lowery of Lamar, Helen Copeland, Gloria (Robert) Rabb, Evoin Williams and Shemeka (Dwayne) Laws, all of Lynchburg; five brothers, Larry (Tracy) Lowery, Ricky Lowery, Craig Lowery and Mandra Lowery, all of Sumter, and Elder Don (Betty) Lowery of Turberville; two sisters-in-law, Estell Logan of New Jersey and Lillie Mae Thompson of Lynchburg; one brother-in-law, Harry (Rebecca) Evans of Lynchburg; four godchildren, Kelvin Lowery and Corey Haskins of New York and Riyoshi Rabb and Ja’Niea Evans, both of Lynchburg; 33 nephews and nieces; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two step-brothers.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, from the Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Sammie Simmons, pastor, eulogist, assisted by Elder George McKnight.

Pallbearers were nephews, cousins and friends.

Flower bearers were nieces, cousins and friends.

Burial was in the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Lynchburg.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Edward W. Odom

Edward Wallace “E.W.” Odom, 81, husband of Blanche Gamble Odom, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Nov. 6, 1926, in Manning, he was a son of the late LeRoy and Frances Witherspoon Odom. He was a retired foreman for SCDOT, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, former chairman of Clarendon County Council, and was involved in real estate. E.W. was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He served as a Sunday school superintendent and a Sunday school teacher for a number of years. He also sang in the choir and enjoyed good singing. He was an active member in the Woodmen of the World and the Knights of Pythias.

Surviving besides his wife of almost 60 years of Manning are a daughter, Mary Frances Floyd of Sumter; a son, Edward Wallace “Eddie” (Fairlyn) Odom Jr. of Johnsonville; four sisters, Edna O. Broach of Minneapolis, Minn., Lorena O. Fann of Greer, Lucille O. Johnson of Sumter and Mary O. Ellenberger of Blufton, Ind.; three grandchildren, Will (Dixie) Bullock, Joseph Michael Floyd Jr. and Megan Blanche Floyd; three great-granddaughters, Iris Bullock, Jade Bullock and Emmeri Jane Poston; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Roy Gamble Odom; a daughter, Jane Odom Geddings; a grandson, Edward Wallace Odom III; two brothers, Harold Odom and Alvin Odom; and a sister, Raye Odom Plowden.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Charlie Brookshire officiating.

Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 326, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

Mary Sue M. Edwards

Mary Sue McDaniel Edwards, 61, died at Tuomey Regional Medical Center on Feb. 9, 2008.

Born Jan. 29, 1947, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Rosa Lee Williams McDaniel and the late George McDaniel. She was the widow of James Edwards Sr. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Lincoln High School. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.

Her loving and fond memories will be cherished by her son, James (Paula) Edwards Jr. of Sumter; her mother, Rosa Williams McDaniel of Sumter; four grandchildren, Tytiana Amari Edwards of Manning, Deonna Wright and Mya and Samantha Rhodes, all of Sumter; five brothers, Matthew McDaniel of Paterson, N.J., Elijah (Peggy) McDaniel of Philadelphia, Pa., Deacon David (Janie Mae) McDaniel, Roosevelt (Margaret) McDaniel and Henry (Cynthia) McDaniel, all of Sumter; one sister, Dorothy (Barry) Potter of Huntsville, Ala.; one adopted brother, Harold C. Scriven of Paterson.

In addition to her father, George McDaniel Sr., and husband, James Edwards Sr., she was preceded in death by one brother, George McDaniel Jr.; two sisters, Annie Mae McDaniel and Eloise McDaniel; her mother-in-law, Gracie Edward; and a sister-in-law, Gloria McDaniel.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at Bible Way World Wide with Bishop John D. Belton.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery in Sumter.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of these arrangements.

David McWhite Sr.

David McWhite Sr., 69, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born March 3, 1938, in Florence County, he was a son of the late Hartley McWhite Sr. and the late Isabella James McWhite.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Florence County and was a 1958 graduate of Wilson High School. He later moved to New Jersey and was employed by General Electric until he retired. After retirement, he relocated to South Carolina.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Those left to grow from his love and cherish his memory are a son, David (Sherlline) McWhite Sr. of Mountain Home, Iowa; a sister; Azilee McWhite Brown of Florence; five grandchildren; Janita, Lanisia, David, Shaylene and Kimaneshia; a caretaker, Annie Faye Stukes of Summerton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is predeceased by three brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at St. Mark Baptist Church, Silver community, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Alice Idol Fitzhugh

SAN ANTONIO – Alice Idol Fitzhugh, age 83, died on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008. She was born in Sumter and was raised in Manning.

She was a wonderful and devoted mother and a proud, dedicated and patriotic military wife who loved her country. Alice was a loving and loved member of The Towers community and immensely enjoyed living life with her family and friends. She was also an enthusiastic member of the Jazzette Dancers, and loved to entertain.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Col. (Ret.) Richard Edwin Fitzhugh of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Betti McCready of Fairhope, Ala.; son, Col. (Ret.) Richard E. Fitzhugh, Jr. of O’Fallon, Ill.; grandchildren: Jill Grace, Amy Davidov and Carrie Fitzhugh; great grandchildren: Wesley Fitz, Emma, Mac, Lucy and Cooper; and sister: Tarquita Strachan.

A memorial service was held on Feb. 13, 2008 at The Towers in San Antonio with Chaplin Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Lorraine Potter officiating..

Burial followed in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, also in San Antonio.

Doreta D. Jackson

REMBERT – Doreta D. Dixon Jackson, 98, died Feb. 4, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 4, 1909, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Wheeler and Louise Odom Dinkins. Mrs. Jackson attended the public schools of Sumter County. She was a farmer and was employed by Shaw Air Force Base. She was a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church. After moving to Mayesville, she became a member of Ebenezer AME Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board and the Missionary Society. After moving back to Horatio, she rejoined Rafting Creek and became active with the Missionary Society, until her health failed.

Survivors include one niece, Priscilla (Thomas) Frame of Virginia; one nephew, Bill (Barbara) Elliot of Sumter; one loving daughter-in-law, Frances N. Dixon of the home; one grandson raised like a son, Wilbur Jerome Dixon; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one grandniece, Alethia (Jerome) of Manning; one grandnephew, Robie McKnight; and a host of other grandnieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Dixon and Pompey Jackson; a son, Wilbur Dixon; four sisters; two brothers; two nephews; and one grandson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Rafting Creek Baptist Church, Rembert, with the Rev. Melvin Mack, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lillian Reynolds and the Rev. A.M. Bonner.

Burial was in Rafting Creek Cemetery, Rembert.

Job’s Mortuary of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Monroe Bell M.D.

Dr. Ralph Monroe Bell of Charlotte and Waxhaw, N.C. died on Feb. 7, 2008. He was born Sept. 3, 1916 in Mooresville N.C. to the late Dr. Andrew E. Bell and Lilla Mann Bell. He was educated in Moorseville Public Schools and is a graduate of Davidson College, University of North Carolina Medical School and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. After graduating, he was an intern at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. He served for four years in the Navy Medical Corps and was a Lieutenant Commander when he left the service. He then was at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, as part of Tulane Medical School’s graduate school.

Ralph practiced medicine as an internist specializing in hematology in Charlotte from 1949 until his retirement in 1986. He was known as an outstanding diagnostician, an avid hunter and part time farmer.

He enjoyed raising hunting dogs and horses. Ralph’s interest in people, love for his family, and dedication for keeping up with new developments in his profession throughout his retirement, and his wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by a sister, Lilla Winstead of Rocky Mount, N.C. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Hodge Bell of the home, two stepchildren, Kimberly Holladay (Jeff) Faaberg of Saint George, S.C. and Kevin Holladay of Manning; four step-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Carrie, Erik and Joshua Faaberg; four sisters, Mary Parks Weathers of Winston-Salem, N.C., Louise Moffitt of High Point, N.C., Helen Rankin of Belmont, N.C. and Eleanor Alexander of Asheboro, N.C., and nine nieces and nephews; Jane Weathers of Raleigh, Katherine Weathers Petree of Winston-Salem, Margaret Winstead Rainey of Charlotte, Hugh Moffitt of Greensboro, Louise Rankin Kelly of Winston-Salem, Richard Rankin of Belmont, Wilson Alexander and Anne Kemp Alexander Neely of Asheboro, and Ralph Alexander of Charlotte.

A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Randy Blanton on Saturday Feb. 16, 2008 at Bonds Grove United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m.

Memorials may be sent to the Bonds Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund, 8215 Bonds Grove Church Rd. Waxhaw, N.C., 28173.
