Joseph M. Carraway Jr.

Joseph “Jofie” Marshall Carraway Jr., 51, husband of Sandra Browder Carraway, died Monday, May 7, 2007 in Greenville, Miss.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of Dorothy Louise Lomax Carraway and the late Joseph Marshall Carraway Sr. Mr. Carraway was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego and was a member of the Certified Cotton Gin Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Korea.

Surviving are his wife of Summerton; his mother of Sumter; a son, Cotton Carraway of Florida; a daughter, Denna Carraway (Timmy) Grimsley of Coward; two brothers, Louie Carraway and Wayne Carraway, both of Sumter; two sisters, Paige (Greg) Sirois of Florida and Connie (Junior) Johnson of Effingham; four grandchildren, Austin Grimsley, Bailey Grimsley, Lucas Carraway and Kristan Carraway; and four sisters-in-law, Gail McIntosh, Paula Craig, Cindy Martin and Marie Coker.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 11, 2007, at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Dodd officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Cotton Carraway, Randy Cubbage, Benny Altman, George McFaddin, Richard Wheeler and Scott Lemonds.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Lillie C. Lampkin

Lillie Canty Lampkin entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at Hopewell Healthcare, Sumter.

Born Sept. 6, 1911 in Rimini, she was one of five children born to the late Peter Canty and Julia Nelson Canty.

She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal Church in Rimini and served faithfully in the church until she met and married Solomon Lampkin, who preceded her in death. After marriage, they moved to Baltimore and joined Fountain Baptist Church, where she was a member of the usher board. In 1975, she moved back home and reconnected with Antioch UME Church, where she was a member of the Stewardess Board no. 1, missionary society and former superintendent of Sunday school, class leader and member of the senior choir.

She leaves to cherish her loving and fond memories, four nephews, John H. Bennett, Frank Bennett of Buffalo, N.Y., J.W. Canty of Chatman, N.C., and James Canty of Charlotte, N.C.; four nieces, Julia T. Lang of Pinewood, Alberta Canty of East Orange, N.J., Sarah Terrance of Buffalo, N.Y., and Queen Ester Bellmen of Virginia Beach, Va., adopted daughter, Eloise Dubose Canty of Pinewood; godson, David Dubose of New York City; goddaughter, Louvenia J. Dinkins of Sumter; one stepdaughter, Alberta Lampkin Middleton of St. Stephens; three sisters-in-law, Ida Mae Canty of Chapman, N.C., Viola Johnson of Georgetown and Omega Phipps of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother-in-law, Vanier (Mabel) Lampkin of St. Stephens; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Lillie Canty Lampkin was preceded in death by two brothers, Peter Canty and Sammy Canty, and two sisters, Mary Holmes and Sarah Bennett.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at Anti-och UME Church with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, Elder Jackie L. Holland and the Revs. Bertha Smith, Harold Conyers and Leroy Green, assisting.

Burial followed in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Pinewood.

Community Funeral Home was in charge of these arrangements.

James Cantey

James “Tucker” Cantey, 64, husband of Geradine Barr Cantey, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Oct. 26, 1942, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Joe Cantey and Thomasina Dingle Cantey. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and served on the trustee board and sang with the male chorus.

Survivors include two brothers, Marion (Earnestine) Cantey of Newark, N.J., and Elder Dr. Joe (Minister Louise) Cantey of Irvington, N.J.; and four sisters, Lucille Space and Hattie Johnson, both of Manning, Evangelist Shirley Williams of Irvington and Elease (the Rev. Dr. George) Wilson of Danville, Va.

He was preceded in death by one son, Wilbur Brock, and one brother, Robert Cantey.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Mouzon officiating, the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, Elder Prince Sampson Pearson, the Rev. Curtis Cantey and the Rev. Malachi Gibson.

Burial was in State Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Earline Howard

Earline McFadden Neal “Noni” Howard died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at Sumter Health and Rehab.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James and Anna McFadden. She was a lifelong member of Mount Pisgah AME Church, where she served in many capacities throughout her lifetime.

Surviving are two sons, Bobby Howard of New York, N.Y., and Alexander Neal Jr. of Sumter; a daughter, the Rev. Betty Neal of New York; a devoted granddaughter, Catherine Tips of Sumter; other grandchildren, Robin Jenkins, Blondena Johnson, Ulysses Neal and Alexander Neal III; 10 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Neal; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at Mount Pisgah AME Church in Sumter, with the pastor, the Rev. M.C. Ragin, officiating.

Interment followed at Evergreen Memorial Park on Wise Drive in Sumter.

Palmer Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Emmett L. Taylor

Emmett Lewis Taylor, 87, widower of Loretta Orene Boyd Taylor, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Summers County, W.Va., he was a son of the late Emmett Cleveland Taylor and the late Gertrude Taylor. He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service and was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Elmore of Summerton and Wanda (Jerry) Powell of Melissa, Texas; four grandchildren, Amy (Matthew) Heath of Charleston, Tim (March) Powell of Gainesville, Fla., Wayne (Susan) Elmore of Sumter and Bryan (Amanda) Elmore of Melbourne, Fla.; and six great-grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth, Madison, Braden, Jack, Travis and Seth.

Graveside services with military honors were held on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007 in the St. Paul Cemetery in Summerton with the Rev. Rob Pierce officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Cypress Foundation of Clarendon Memorial Hospital, P.O. Box 550, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

James C. Hines

James “Jimmy” Clifton Hines, husband of Catherine Dingle Hines, died Sept. 20, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 6, 1943, in Edenton, N.C., he was the son of Gladys Hines and the late Andrew Blount. James was the owner of Hines Painting.

In addition to his father, he is predeceased by two brothers, George C. Hines and William H. Reed.

He is survived by a daughter; Dr. Lisa Hines of San Francisco, Calif.; a stepson; Eric (Cynthia) Dingle of Summerton; two sisters, Mary McClease and Zelma Hines, both of Edenton; three brothers, Thomas (Sharon) Gilliam of Bronx, N.Y., Bill (Shirley) Gilliam of Wilson, N.C., and Sylvester Hines of New York, N.Y.; an uncle, Clevaland Blount of Edenton; four grandchildren, Corena, Erica, Samuel and Nailychaia; three children that he cared for and loved as if they were his own, Shiroshell, Chucky and Keith Dingle; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Monday at St. Matthews AME Church with the Rev. Manual Fogle, pastor, officiating.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Rev. Jack McElveen

The Rev. William Jack McElveen, age 67, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007 at a Florence hospital.

Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Arthur Hannibal McElveen and Alma Jane Floyd McElveen. He was a minister in the Pentecostal Holiness Faith and served the Floyd Chapel, Hanna’s Chapel, Olanta, Rheams, Summerville and McKenzie Tabernacle Churches. He also assisted at the Piney Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a member of the McKenzie Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel A. McElveen and Casey S. McElveen; a sister, Colee Lee; and six brothers, Allen Floyd, Elwood McElveen, Hubert McElveen, Wiley McElveen, Kenneth McElveen and Everett McElveen.

He is survived by his wife, Eva M. McElveen of New Zion; two sons, William Jack McElveen Jr. of Lexington, and Loyd E. McElveen of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Louise M. Floyd of Lake City; three brothers, James B. McElveen, Jerry Lee (Sandra) McElveen and Gordon W. (Delores) McElveen all of New Zion; and one granddaughter Lauren Elizabeth McElveen.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 12, 2007 at McKenzie Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church,

Burial followed in Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the McKenzie Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church or the Turbeville Free Will Baptist Children’s Home P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Canzile Bosier

NEW YORK -- Canzile Bosier, 87, departed this earthly life very peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at San Souci Nursing Home located in Yonkers, N.Y.

Born Nov. 21, 1920, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James Green and the late Sally Holiday Green.

She spent most of her life in Clarendon County, where she also attended the local school and united with Christ at Mount Pleasant UME Church. She served in many capacities during her tenure at Mount Pleasant.

She was employed for many years at both Briggs Nursing Home in Silver and Campbell Soup Co. in Sumter. She loved her work and placed much emphasis on getting the job done.

She was a fun loving person and lived a life filled with many happy days.

Those left to grow from her legacy of love are her children, Thelma Wilson of Bronx, N.Y., Viola (John) Myers of Pinewood, Sally (Mathew) Boyd of Wappingers Fall, N.Y., Canzie (Woodrow) Brown and Dorothy (Elijah) Watson, all of Yonkers, and Gervine Bell of New Jersey; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a godson, Chance Conyers; an uncle, Jippy Holiday; six sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at Mount Pleasant UME Church with the Rev. Barry Gadsen officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Veronica M. Fludd

BALTIMORE, Md. – Veronica Maria Fludd, 26, died Oct. 26, 2007, in Baltimore.

Born Nov. 2, 1980, in Manning, she was a daughter of Frances L. Fludd and the late Willie Morris Gibson. She was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and furthered her education at Central Carolina Technical College and Coppin State University, Baltimore, where she was majoring in early childhood education. She was employed with Future Care of Maryland.

Survivors include a brother, Dwayne Fludd of Summerton; three sisters, Mae F. (Roney) Maddox, Sabrina Fludd and Teresa A. (Jason) Lawson, all of Summerton; and her grandmother, Ella Carter of Summerton.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Melvin Capers, presiding, the Rev. Dr. James B. Stukes, eulogist, and Elder Joseph Postell and Minister Eartha Carter officiating.

Burial was in the Friendship AME Church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Willie Mae Oliver

Willie Mae “Sister” Oliver, 74, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born April 6, 1933, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Lizzie and Simon Andrews. She was united in holy matrimony to her loving and devoted husband, Cleophus “Herman” Oliver.

She was predeceased by four siblings, Moses Gaymon, Mary Brailsford, James Andrews and Hugh Conyers; and her mother-in-law whom she loved as a mother, Beatrice Oliver.

Mrs. “Sister” will be missed by all who knew her.

Those left to cherish her memory and grow from her love are her loving husband, Cleophus “Herman” Oliver of the home; two daughters, Helen (John) Briggs and Dorothy (Roger) Hilliard, both of Summerton; a son, George (Berdie) Green of Summerton; two sisters, Claydine Andrews and Susan Britton, both of New York City, N.Y.; three brothers, Dawson (Mary) Andrews of New Rochelle, N.Y., John (Tisha) Andrews of Manning and Robert (Susan) Junious of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Bertha Thomas of Manning, Angeline Green of Sumter and Maxine Stinney of Washington D.C.; an aunt; five grandchildren, Brenda (Willie) Nelson of Sumter, Shanda (Randy) Oliver and Latosha (Harvey) Junious, both of Atlanta, Ga., Ronnie Hilliard and Latonya (Andrae) Gordon, both of Summerton; 11 great-grandchildren; two special friends, Ruth Riley of Pinewood and Julia Green of Summerton; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. “Sister” were held on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at Greater St. Phillips RUME Church with the Rev. Warren Hatcher, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
