Dorothy E. Barto

Dorothy Eudene Barto, 76, wife of John F. “Dick” Barto, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at a local nursing center.

Born Sept. 16, 1931, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late David Rogers and the late Bertha Galloway Rogers. Mrs. Bartow attended the public schools of Sumter and was of the Baptist faith. She was a retired customer service representative with Sears in Atlanta, Ga.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; three sisters, Mary Richardson and Sarah (B.J.) Marsh of Sumter and Esther (Chester) Tomson of Orangeburg; three brothers, Everett Rogers of Sumter, William (Billie) Rogers of Manning and Charles (Cindy) Rogers of Sumter; a grandson, Christopher Crews; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Donald C. Crews Jr.; two sisters, Jacqueline Rogers and Barbara Bianco; and a brother, David J. Rogers.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, in the Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Dr. Ryan Pack officiating.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 867, Sumter, SC 29151 or to a charity of one’s choice.

James H. Carter

KINGSTREE – James Hill “Jimmie” Carter, 77, husband of Sarah Branch Carter, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born May 11, 1930, in Loris, he was a son of the late Elder J. H. and Tyra Lee Carter.

He was self-employed in appliance service and repair and was a member of Little Rock Baptist Church in Little Rock. He was first married to the late Kathryn Miles Carter, then to the late Nancy Hadley Carter.

Surviving are his wife of Kingstree; five daughters, Terry (Ricky) Stokes of Bennettsville, Cindy (Jerry) Murphy of Clio, Robin (Darryl) Sweeton of Winston-Salem, N.C., Janis (Sidney) Rogers of Clio, and Margaret C. Lambert of Georgetown; a son, Jeffrey H. Carter of Myrtle Beach; three sisters, Dorothy (Charlton) Ard and Violet (Mike) Moody, Mike, all of Manning, and Bobbie (Lee) Reaves of Alcolu; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Darlene Bateman of Florence, Donna (Bobby) Pope of Lamar, and Dawn (Richard) Clark of Chesterfield; and five step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Carter and Johnnie Carter, and a sister, Pearl Benton.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Richard Alderman officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jerry Carter, Richard Rogers, Lee Reaves Jr., Jim Reaves, Shubert Cockfield and Donald Ard.

Honorary pallbearers were Charles Walsh and Charlie Coker.

Memorials may be made to Little Rock Baptist Church, 2522 Worship St., Little Rock, S.C. 29567.

James C. Phillips Jr.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. James Carson “Jim” Phillips Jr., 87, husband of Carolyn Godwin Rawlinson Phillips, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at his home.

Born Aug. 14, 1920, in Manning, he was a son of the late James Carson Phillips Sr. and the late Lucy Rebecca Odom Phillips. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., retired U. S. Air Force colonel and member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Godwin Rawlinson Phillips; a daughter, Cynthia Phillips of San Antonio, Texas; a stepson, Dr. William Rawlinson of Manning; two stepdaughters, Ginger Martin of Manning and Julie Rickenbaker of Summerton; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Leroy Phillips of Manning; and two sisters, Carolyn Stewart and Corinne Jennings of Manning. Other surviving relatives include Marilyn Moorman and her husband, Dr. Richard H. Moorman, of Denver, Colo.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty McCallister Phillips; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Stephenson; two brothers, Robert W. Phillips and Ashley C. Phillips; and a sister, Pauline Gregg.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Annie B. Wood

BRONX, N.Y. – Annie B. Daniels Wood entered eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at Bronx Lebanon Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Chester, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Archie Daniels, mother of Reginald E. Wood Sr. and mother-in-law of Connie Carey Wood of Manning.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, in New York City.

Wilbur Carlyle Ardis

Wilbur Carlyle Ardis, 79, widower of Dorothy Copeland Ardis, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at his home in Manning.

Born Aug, 28, 1928, in Manning, he was a son of the late Herbert L. and Nomie Dennis Ardis. He was owner and operator of Manning Farm and Garden Shop, Inc. for 45 years, a member of Manning First Baptist Church, a United States Army veteran, a Mason, and past master of St. Peter’s Lodge No. 54AFM.

Surviving are a son, Wilbur Carlyle (Susan) Ardis Jr. of Manning; two brothers, Herman E. Ardis of Manning, and Clyde W. Ardis of Anniston, Ala.; three sisters, Vivian A. Epps of Manning, Jean A. Malone of Florence, and Mary Ann Horton of Lexington; three grandchildren, Stacy Ardis Farley, Carole Ardis Evans and Wilbur Carlyle Ardis III; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Richard E. Brock

Richard Eugene Brock, 58, died on Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born in Silver on Sept. 5, 1949, he was a son of Bessie Wilson and the late Mood Brock. He was a member of Friendship AME Church, a 1968 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School and received a degree in criminal justice from Central Carolina Technical College, Sumter.

Richard was employed with Sunbeam of Manning, Exide Battery of Sumter, the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office as a sheriff’s deputy, and Food Lion as a truck driver. His last employment was with UTI Transport, Charleston.

Richard was united in holy matrimony to the late Annie L. Billie Brock. This union was blessed with two children, Latonia Brock and Richard E. Brock Jr. He was a faithful son, a loving father, a caring brother, uncle and a loyal and trusted friend to many. He served his country by active duty in the U.S. Marines in the Vietnam Conflict and in the S.C. National Guard.

He is survived by a loving mother, Bessie Wilson Brock; two children, Richard E. Brock Jr. and Latonia Brock of the home; four sisters, Lillian B. Smith of Baltimore, Md., Elizabeth B. (Castine) Ridgill of Manning, and Margaret and Teressa Brock, both of Silver; a special daughter, Betty (Bet) Billie; two loyal friends, Robert (Bugg) Billie and Willie T. Briggs; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at Friendship AME Church, Silver, with the Rev. Dr. James Stukes officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Irene Freeman Duke

Mary Irene Freeman Duke, 86, widow of David Hartwill Duke, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 27, 1921, in Timmonsville, she was a daughter of the late John Dudley and Lillie Jordan Freeman. She was a retired supervisor from Manning Manufacturing Company, and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church and the T.E.L. Sunday School Class.

Surviving are three sons, David Autry (Betty) Duke of Sumter, Paul Hartwill (Mary Anne) Duke of Manning, and Michael Bruce (Jodi) Duke of Manning; two sisters, Eunice Freeman Howell of Timmonsville, and Eula Freeman McCaskill of Cassett; a brother, George B. Freeman of Camden; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Martha Ann Duke Davis and Mary Jane Duke Scott, grandsons, Randall Oren Davis and Michael Cody Duke; sisters, Elma Freeman Duke and Virginia “Sudie” Freeman Duke; and brother, Dudley William Freeman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.

Burial will follow in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery in New Zion.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, T.E.L. Sunday School Class, 49 W. Boyce Street, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to the Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 12183 Black River Road, New Zion, S.C. 29111.

Shirley Neil Swann

Shirley Neil Swann, 72, died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, in Trident Hospital in Charleston.

Born Sept. 23, 1935, in Prentiss, Miss., she was a daughter of the late Hugh Herman Williams and the late Allie Velma Roberts Williams. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Swann was retired manager of a dry cleaning business.

Surviving are three daughters, Wanda Kay Swann of Des Moines, Iowa, Barbara Joan McCarthy and Billie Dorman of Manning; two sons, Lewis Herman Swann of Manning and George Lee Swann of Des Moines, Iowa; ten grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral in Manning, with the Rev. William K. Cribb officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to True Way Holiness Church, P. O. Box 385, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.
