Joseph R. McFaddin

Joseph Rittiner McFaddin, husband of Violet Elma Jackson McFaddin, of Covenant Place, died on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008, after an extended illness.

Born in Gable on Dec. 16, 1921, he was the son of the late Henry Wheeler McFaddin and the late Bessie Higgins McFaddin. Joe, as he was fondly called, was educated in Gable and Sumter. He attended the University of South Carolina and served in the Army-Air Force from 1942-45.

A top-notch salesman for Nabisco-Kraft Foods, Joe retired in 1983 with 35 years of experience. Joe always demonstrated his love for people in all of his jobs and, after retiring, he worked for the Fuller Brush Co., because he liked to be around people. In his retirement, he also volunteered a number of years at Crosswell Elementary School in Sumter as a teacher’s helper in the classroom. He also worked for a period of time as a precinct captain at the polls.

Joe had a strong Christian faith and served in Holy Cross Presbyterian Church as an elder and member of the choir for many years. While attending First Assembly of God, he had a ministry as an usher and in other areas. After his retirement, Joe sang, preached and shared the love of Jesus in several nursing homes as a volunteer. He was active in the Shepherd’s Center, a senior group in Sumter, in the choir and other areas. As a member of the “Mission to Men Choir,” Joe sang with the group and gave his testimony at many churches in many different towns.

Devoted to family, Joe was married to his beloved wife, Violet, for 60 years. He loved his children and grandchildren and received “The Greatest Grandparent of the Year” Award at the State Fair in 1986 for an essay that his granddaughter, Joye, wrote about him.

Joe is survived by his wife, Violet of Covenant Place; daughter Patty (Jeff) Barnes of Ladson; son Steve (Edie) McFaddin of Columbia; and daughter Jane (Don) Coleman of Charlotte, N.C. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Rebecca, Debbie, Joye and Esther Barnes; Matthew, Katie and John McFaddin and Christopher, David and Kyle Coleman; a great-grandchild, Jasper Groth; a sister, Wynnette Fraser of Darlington; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his grandson, Joshua Michael Barnes, in 2003.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at First Assembly of God in Sumter with the Rev. Phil Simun officiating.

Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers weree members of the Mission to Men Choir.

Burial was in the McFaddin Cemetery in Gable.

Alyce Hill Means

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Alyce Hill Means, 94, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in Heritage House Nursing Home in Valdosta.

Born March 13, 1914 in Bamberg, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Hill and Sarah Nelson Wright. She was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Margery Rogge of Valdosta, Ga., one grandson, Paul Ducom III of Elgin, and three granddaughters, Shan Ducom of Rome, Ga., Mellette Dobson of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Leslie Meyer of Williamsburg, Va.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 29, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were deacons and men of Manning First Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to United Hospice of Valdosta, 407 Cowart Ave., Valdosta, Ga., 31602.

Conner Dingle Jr.

BRONX, N.Y. – Mr. Conner Dingle Jr., 72, husband of Inez Bembow Dingle, died Monday, March 31, 2008, at Jacoby Hospital in Bronx.

Born Oct.15, 1935, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Cora and Conner Dingle Sr.

Those left to grow from his legacy of love are; his devoted wife of 54 years, Inez Bembow Dingle; 12 children; Elma, Robert, Lavern, Tony, Pernell, Anthony, Shirley, Vanessa, Debbie, Jason, and Ashley, all from Bronx, and Cassie Williams of Manning.

He is predeceased by a daughter, Bertha Mae Dingle.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, April 7, 2008, at the chapel of Summerton Funeral Service.

Burial followed in St. Matthew AME Church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

George Tomlin

George Tomlin, 57, husband of Mary Bryant Tomlin, died Monday, March 31, 2008, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born June 5, 1950, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Thomas Tomlin Sr. and the late Annie Wilson Tomlin. He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church (USA) and a graduate of Manning Training High School. He was a professional brick mason and worked for several years with McDaniel, Rogers and DuPont Construction companies.

Survivors include two sons, Sheldon (Lizzie) Tomlin of Sumter and George Tomlin Jr. of Manning; four daughters, Jennifer Tomlin of Alcolu, Jessica Tomlin, Lakell Tomlin and Machelle Nelson, all of Manning; two brothers, Albert (Mary) Tomlin of Manning and Robert Tomlin of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Annie (Willie) Harvin of Davis Station; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Tomlin Jr. and James Tomlin.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Westminister Presbyterian Church (USA), Alcolu, with the Rev. Dr. Ella F. Busby officiating, assisted by the Rev. David Pugh, the Rev. Henry McCray, the Rev. Dr. Franklin Colclough and the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Janet F. Simon

TROY, N.Y. – Janet Floreen Simon, 50, died March 31, 2007, at Samaritan Hospital, Troy, N.Y.

Born Dec. 22, 1956, in Troy, she was a daughter of Floreen Williams Simon and the late January “Jerry” Simon. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Pine Grove AME Church. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, attending Manning Training Schools and Manning High School.

Survivors besides her mother, Floreen W. Simon of Manning, includes five daughters, Lukesha Simon, Arie Simon, Jacqueline Pugh and Joanne Pugh, all of Troy, and Cleola Simon of Manning; two sisters, Nettiemae Williams and Elloree Rivers, both of Troy; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on April 6, 2007, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Jerome McCray, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Paxville Cemetery.

Henry Dingle Sr.

Henry Dingle Sr., 69, husband of Frances Cantey Dingle, died April 7, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born April 6, 1939, in Manning, he was the son of the late Deacon Earnest Dingle and Edith Robinson Dingle. He received his formal education at Manning Training School and graduated in 1958. He accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Mount Chapel Baptist Church, where he served as an usher, choir member, trustee and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Dingle was a chef and worked in several restaurants before he became owner of Dingle’s Village Restaurant, Greeleyville. He worked for Georgia-Pacific and later retired from Westvaco Lumber Co.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Cantey Dingle of the home; four daughters, ArTheia E. Dingle and CoRett Dingle, both of Upper Marlboro, Md., Darlene (Allen) Dingle-Brown and Bonita Dingle Graham of Columbia; two sons, Henry (Leslie) Dingle Jr. of Columbia and Linwood Craig (Jean) Land of Alaska; three brothers, James Dingle of Manning, the Rev. Lee Earnest (Shirley) Dingle of Sumter and Joseph (Marie) Dingle of Warner-Robbins, Ga.; one sister, Elma (Paul) Blackwell of Manning; and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, four sisters and one brother.

Funeral services wwere held on Saturday, April 12, 2008,at Mount Chapel Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon, pastor, the Rev. Northern Miller, presiding, assisting the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, the Rev. Eloise Pompey and the Rev. Lee Earnest Dingle.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Rue Ingram Moore Jr.

ALBANY, N.Y.– Rue Ingram Moore Jr., age 80, died Friday April 11, 2008 after a long illness.

Mr. Moore was born on May 19, 1927 in Olanta, S.C. He was the son of the late Rue Ingram Moore Sr. and Wilma Lewis Moore. He was a graduate of The Citadel and Emory University. He was a long-time resident of Albany, N.Y. where he taught ethics and philosophy at the Medical University of Albany.

Survivors include two sons, Christopher (Carol) Moore of Illinois and Richard (Jeannette) Moore of Pennsylvania; a daughter, Claire (Greg) Merrill of Maryland; and six grandchildren, Henry, Ronnan, Elizabeth and Sean Moore and Parker and Paige Merrill.

Also surviving are four brothers, Wilmer L. “Duckie” (Miriam) Moore of Olanta, Houston (Joyce) Moore of Kingstree, Randolph (Jenny) Moore of Dana Point, Calif., Thomas H. (Peggy) Moore of Florence; and two sisters, Zilphia (Raymond) Gibbons of New Zion and Alvida (James) Evans of Olanta.

Memorial services were held in Blue Bell, Pa. on Wednesday, April 16, 2008.

Memorials be made to the Nazareth United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 368, Olanta, S.C. 29114.

Louis J. Degenhardt

Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Louis J. Degenhardt, age 86, beloved husband of Mary Esther Williams Degenhardt, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late George Steven and Matilda Ann Lawrence Degenhardt, Maj. Degenhardt was a 30-year veteran, having been a P-51 fighter pilot during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Clusters while serving in the European Theater of Operations. Upon retirement from the Air Force, he worked with the Sumter Police Department where he became chief of detectives. Following that, he became a special investigator with SLED, working for the Sumter County District Attorney. An avid golfer, Maj. Degenhardt was a member of Sunset Country Club, where he was club champion for many years.

Survivors in addition to his wife are two daughters, Karen (John) Bullington of Rock Hill and Linni (Bill) Mayo of Columbia; two sisters, Jean Beck of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Sally Degenhardt of Myrtle Beach; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gretchen Degenhardt.

A memorial service with full military honors was held Saturday, April 14, 2007, at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Alice S. Billups

Alice Sweat Billups, 88, widow of John Williams Billups, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Aug. 19, 1919, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Bossie Sweat and Julia Johnson. She was a graduate of Manning Training School.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include five daughters, Alice Evelyn Johnson of Miami, Fla., Jessie Kelley, Patsy (Wayne) Murphy, Janie (Charlie) Nesbitt and Stella Lemmon, all of Manning; four sons, Thomas Lee (Catherine) Billups of Miami, John (Ida) Billups Jr. of Paxville, Leon (Willistean) Billups and James Lee (Corrine), both of Manning; two granddaughters she reared as her own, Ozetta (John) McBride and Antwanette Worthy, both of Manning; and three sisters, Cora Pack of Manning, Daisy Cantey of Paxville and Beatrice Major of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville, with the Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, officiating, assisting the Rev. Major Lloyd and Minister Lillian Wright.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.
