Lee Gooden Jr.

Lee “Daddy” Gooden Jr., 86, husband of Elouise Felder Gooden, died July 31, 2007, at Hopewell Healthcare Center.

Born July 2, 1921, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Lee Gooden Sr. and Estelle Lang Gooden. Mr. Gooden attended the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he confessed Christ and joined New Hope UME Church.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Elouise Felder Gooden; four daughters, Essie (Freddie) Brunson, Eleanor Amos, Camilla (Isiah) Conyers, all of Pinewood, and Anita (Grover) Duren of Manning; three sons, Lee Gooden III of Kershaw, James (Carolyn) Gooden of Wichita, Kan., and Leroy Gooden of Sumter; one sister, Rosa Shannon of Wilmington, N.C.; 33 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Edward Gooden and Albertus Gooden; and three sisters, Minnie Dyson, Rosa Lee Batts and Louise Dickerson.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at New Hope Union Methodist Episcopal Church in Pinewood, with Bishop Elect Leroy T. James, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roger Mullins, presiding, Presiding Elder James O. Robinson, eulogist, Minister Earnest Green, Bishop Cedric White and Minister Ella Holland.

Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Clarice M. Lee

LYNCHBURG –Mrs. Clarice M. Lee, age 93, died on Monday, July 30, 2007 at a Florence Nursing Facility after an illness.

Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel McElveen and Viola E. McClam McElveen. Mrs. Lee was a homemaker and was a member of the Olanta Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Lee; four brothers, Ray McElveen. Milburn McElveen, Wyatt McElveen, Cecil McElveen.

She is survived by a daughter, Mae L. (Jerry) Galloway of Huntsville, Ala.; a son, Kenneth (Hazel) Lee of Turbeville; a sister, Valorie M. Johnson of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Edward McElveen and Earl (Gladys) McElveen both of Charlotte and Legrand (Clara) McElveen of Bishopville.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 in the Chapel of Floyd Funeral Home.

Burial followed in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Southland Health Care Center for their care and kindness during their mother’s illness.

Memorials may be made to the Olanta Baptist Church.

Cleveland P. McBride Jr.

Cleveland Postelle McBride Jr., 60, died Monday, July 30, 2007, in the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 28, 1946, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Elder Cleveland P. McBride Sr. and the late Gertrude Calls McBride and the husband of Thelma Bozier McBride. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1964, he continued his education to receive a bachelor’s degree in French and a master’s degree in counseling, both from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. He was also a graduate of Gupton Jones School of Mortuary Science in Atlanta, Ga., and was a licensed mortician.

He was a dedicated member of Sumter Second Presbyterian Church, USA, holding the office of elder and a choir member.

He was drafted into the military during the Vietnam War and served an extended tour of duty from 1968 to 1970 as a postmaster of the 101st Airborne. He retired from the State Department of Education in Transportation after completing 33 years of service. He, along with a few of his siblings, invested in ownership of the Quizno’s Subs located at 1062 Airport Blvd, Columbia. He was also an active member of the 32nd degree Free Mason with the Golden Lodge No. 78.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife, Thelma Bozier McBride of the home; three children, Terry Michelle (Barry) Fludd of Orangeburg, Kisha LaShea (Anthony) Birds of Summerville and Cleveland P. McBride III of Sumter; five grandchildren, Jermaine Fludd, Jayvon Fludd, Christion Greene, Anthony Birds III and Kyra DeLaney Birds; his father, Elder Cleveland P. (Dorothy) McBride Sr.; six brothers, Charlie (Thelma) McBride, Eugene McBride, Stephon (Barbara) McBride, Elder Andre (Michelle) McBride, Phares (Melissa) McBride of Sumter and Clarence Dubose of California; three sisters, Normie (Leroy) Walcott, Patricia (Herman) Stukes of Sumter and Katrina (Levern) McFadden of Springfield, Va.; four brothers-in-law, Lee Whitney (Mable) Bozier of McClellanville, Jarriet (Louise) Bozier of Summerton, Willie (Dorothy) Bozier of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Billie (Juanita) Bozier of Dalzell; six sisters-in-law, Mary Bozier of Chester, Va., Carrie (Priestly) Canty of New York, N.Y., Dorothy Bethea of Orangeburg, Annie Frazier of Ridgeland, Grace McKenzie of McClellanville and Cindy Bozier of Tampa, Fla.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at the Sumter Second Presbyterian Church, USA, with the Rev. Gloria J. Williams, pastor, the Rev. Earl Galloway, Elder Frances Singleton, the Rev. Dr. Frank Colclough, the Rev. Dr. Robert E. Bligen, Elder Andre McBride, the Rev. Johnnie O. Coe and the Rev. Joann Murrill.

Burial followed in the Hillside Memorial Park.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

Earnestine J. Boatright

Earnestine Johnson Boatright died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 3, 1940, in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, she was the stepdaughter of Letha Hilton.

She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville section of Manning, where she was a member of the senior choir, missionary and pastor’s aide boards.

She is survived by her husband, Frederick Boatright of the home; two daughters, Ruth Ann (Kenneth) Clark and Lillian (Harold) Bradley, both of Manning; three sons, Willie James (Delores) Johnson and Stanley (Ingrid) Boatright, both of Manning, and Frederick Boatright Jr. of Seattle, Wash.; stepmother, Letha Hilton of Springfield, Ill.; five sisters, Annie Dell Jackson of Sumter, Willie Mae Pringle of Manning, Rhuenette (Harold) Ragin and Alicestine (Eugene) Watson, both of Sumter, and Lillian Wilson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Joe (Annette) Thompson of Sumter; two stepsisters, Vicki Nordin of Springfield and Mazel T. York of Manning; two stepbrothers, Gregory Felder of California and Henry Thompson of Manning; an aunt reared as a special sister, Lilia (Johnnie) Plowden of Manning; father-in-law, Acie Boatright of Columbia; 14 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Neimiah; a grandmother who reared her, Leila Johnson; a brother, Harry L. Wilson; and a sister, Chinese W. Simon.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at Mount Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon, pastor, the Rev. David Pugh, eulogist, assisted by the Revs. David Lawson, Ruth Pugh and Effie Hilton.

Burial followed in the St. Matthews Cemetery in Manning.

Thomas M. Bradford Sr.

COLUMBIA – Thomas Moultrie Bradford Sr., 86, husband of Arlonial DeLaine Bradford of Manning, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at Dorn VA Medical Center.

Born July 16, 1921, in Camden, he was a son of the late Rev. Benjamin F. Bradford and Lottie C. Johnson Bradford. He attended the public schools of Charleston and received his college education from Allen University, Columbia. He served in the U.S. Army, both at home and in Germany, during World War II and was honorably discharged.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Moultrie (Sonya) Bradford of Columbia; two daughters, Arlonial Yvonne (Derrick) Jackson and Carletta Yvette (Jerome) Brown, both of Columbia; one daughter-in-law, Victoria Bradford of Vancouver, Wash.; reared in the home, Brent James Addison and Serwah Armah-Koranleng; two sisters, Charlotte Cooper and Flora Dixon, both of Columbia; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Benjamin L. Bradford; one foster daughter, Juanita LeGrand; five sisters; and four brothers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at Fleming and DeLaine Chapel in Manning, with Pastor Baba D. Jackson, eulogist, and the Revs. Melvin Capers, Lula DeLaine and Mack McClam.

Burial was in Liberty Hill AME Church Cemetery, Summerton.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Annie Freeman

Annie Will Randall Freeman, 99, widow of Edwin Lee Freeman Sr., died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at the home of her daughter in Raleigh, N.C.

Born May 20, 1908, in Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Elsa and Etta Smith Randall. She was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sumter and a member of Highland United Methodist Church in Raleigh. She has resided for the past seven years with her daughter in Raleigh.

Surviving are a daughter, Kay Freeman (Bynum) Driggers of Raleigh; three sons, Edwin Lee (Shirley) Freeman Jr. of Pendleton, Christopher Randall “Chris” Freeman of Summerton and David Paul Freeman of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Miriam Wilder of Columbus, Miss.; 13 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A special thanks is extended to caregivers, Shirley, Jeannine and Lola.

Graveside services were held on Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, in Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter with the Rev. James “Jim” Lee officiating.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s St., Suite 400, Raleigh, N.C. 27605, or to Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27607.

Tom Thompson

Julian Bryan “Tom” Thompson, 76, passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Services were held on Sunday, aug. 27, 2007, at Edgemere Church of Christ with burial in the DFW National Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.

Memorial services will be arranged in Sumter for a later date.

Tom was born Nov. 6, 1930, in Manning, to Hugh Edward and Callie Thompson. On Nov. 27, 1953, he was married to Gwendolyn Pittman in Wichita Falls. Tom served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 until his retirement as a chief master sergeant in 1976. During his service, he graduated from the NCO Academy, the Defense Language Institute and the Defense Intelligence School.

Tom was a member of Edgemere Church of Christ. He was also a member of the Newcomers Club, the Congressional Club and the Retired Military Happy Hour Dance Club. He enjoyed playing golf, working in the yard and traveling extensively with Gwen.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gwendolyn Thompson of Wichita Falls; daughter, Roxanne (Shaun) Lopez of Hurst, Texas; and two grandchildren, Bryan and David Lopez. He is also survived by two sisters, Joyce Link and Cleo DuBose, both of Sumter; and two brothers, Murray Thompson of Sumter and Hugh Ray Thompson of Alcolu.

Henry A. Hicks

Henry Allen Hicks, 69, of Milton, Florida, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2007, after a long illness.

He was born in Manning on Sept. 9, 1937, the son of the late Allen and Lucille Hicks.

Henry was a graduate of Boys High School in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Upon completion of school, he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy where he retired after 20 years of service. He earned a degree in engineering and proceeded to work for and retire from Williams International Aerospace in Walled Lake, Michigan.

Henry was an active member and chairman of the deacon board of James Street Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Pride of Milton #12, Heroines of Jericho #251, Retired Social Club, Men with Vision, Santa Rosa Chapter, NAACP, and past Patron of Peace Chapter #5, Order of the Eastern Star.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, La-Sylvia Hicks; children, Sylvester (Susan) Hicks, Anita (Kenny) Johnson, all of Milton; Henrietta (Daniel) Thomas of Pontiac, Michigan; two adopted children, James Hicks of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky; and Bianca Hicks of Milton; one sister; five brothers; five grandchildren; six sisters-in-law; eleven godchildren; and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Hicks; his sisters-in-law, Mary, Henrietta and Ada Hicks and Myra Morrison Jackson; and his mother-in-law, Georgia Morrison Dunlap.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at Mt. Pilgrim African Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Warren P. Gilmore, pastor of James St. Baptist Church, officiating, and assisted by the Rev. James Goosbly, pastor of Mt. Pilgrim African Missionary Baptist Church.

Burial followed in Milton-Keyser Cemetery.

Full Masonic and military honors were present at graveside.

Lewis Funeral Home in Milton was in charge of arrangements.

Annie Mae Lawson

Annie Mae Lawson, 60, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Affectionately known as “Ann,” she was born Nov. 29, 1946, in Summerton. She was a daughter of the late J.C. “Sigh” Lawson and the late Evelyn “Elease” Lawson. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was formerly employed by Knights Inn until her health declined. She was a devoted mother, a doting grandmother and a dedicated friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

Those left to grow from her love and cherish her memory are: three sons, Frank Lawson and Lester Lawson of the home and Stanley (Yolineda) Lawson of Davis Station; a daughter, Marva Lawson of New York City, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Akeem, Tavon, Courtney, Alexandria, Ashley and Miles; two sisters, Christine Lawson of the St. Paul community and Mary Ann Lawson of Miami, Fla.; a brother, Willie (Bernadette) Lawson of Columbia; an aunt, Noralee Ragin of Miami; a very special friend, Mary Alice Hart of the St. Paul community; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Ms. Lawson were held on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Melvin J. Capers officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
