Tonny Lee McCray

LYNCHBURG – Tonny Lee McCray, 33, died March 31, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 1, 1973, in Lake City, he was a son of Lou Emma McCray and Harvey McKnight Jr. He was a 1993 graduate of Mayewood High School and was employed by M.B. Kahn Construction in Manning. Tonny was a kind, loving and caring young man who greeted people with a smile.

Survivors besides his mother, Lou Emma McCray of Pinewood; father, Harvey McKnight Jr. of Dalzell; a daughter, Jazzlyn Cierria McCray of Timmonsville; two sisters, Wanda Denise McKnight of Sumter and Stacy McCray of Pinewood; four brothers, Rodney Oneal McKnight of Manhattan, N.Y., Joseph McCray of Columbia, Scott McCray of Atlanta, Ga., and Derrick (Rosa) Evans of New Zion; two devoted grandparents, Harvey Sr. and Mattie McKnight of Lynchburg; eight uncles; three aunts; one niece; a special friend, Julia Johnson; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 7, 2007, at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Samuel B. Cooper, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Robert Rabb and John Barr.

Burial was in Goodman Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Smith

Myrtle Ellen June Wallace Smith, 87, of Sumter and Massena, N.Y., died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 6, 1920, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Ulysses Stewart June and the late Amaryntha Broadway June. Mrs. Smith was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church, and a member and past worthy matron of Beuclare Chapter No. 20 Order of Eastern Star.

She was twice married, first to the late John D. Wallace and later to the late Victor H. Smith.

Surviving are three daughters, Marguerite Wallace (Jarvis) Planty of Massena, Helen Joyce Wallace (Bobby) Floyd of Santa Fe, Tenn., and Sharon Wallace (Madison) Lankford of Port Orange, Fla.; three brothers, U.S. (Doris Baker) June, Clyde (Vermelle Cross) June and George June, all of Sumter; two sisters, Gladys (Ernest) Johnston and Doris June Lewis, all of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Estelle Dunlap June of Sumter, Bernice Wallace McCollum of Charlotte and Madalee Wallace Haley of Pageland; four grandchildren, Polly Floyd, Bonnie Floyd Blackburn, Melinda Planty and Brenda Planty Brue; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas W. June.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 5, 2007, in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert N. Rivers officiating.

Private burial was held in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to New Calvary Baptist Church, 38 Center St., Sumter, S.C. 29150, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Desmond R. Conyers

Desmond Rayon Conyers, 15, died Monday, April 7, 2008, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

Born Oct. 15, 1992, in Sumter, he was a son of Michael and Virginia Heyward Conyers. Mr. Conyers received his education from the public schools of Clarendon County and was a freshman at Manning High School. Desmond was an academically gifted student at Manning Junior High School, had received numerous awards and was an honor roll student. He attended Calvary Baptist Church, where he was active in the usher’s ministry, brotherhood association, young people’s choir and a member of the Black River Association Young People’s Choir. He loved and adored his family, church family, teachers and classmates.

Survivors include his loving parents; a big brother, Michael Conyers Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; three godsisters, Cherisa (Raymond) Reuben of Sumter, Marissa Pugh of Manning and Savannah Williams of Sumter; a godniece and a godnephew; a grandmother, Adline Conyers, and great-grandmother, Rosa Hill, both of Sumter; 11 aunts; 10 uncles; and a host of cousins, special family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jeremiah (Lena) Heyward; grandfather, Miller Conyers; great-grandfather, Tom Hill; and great-grandmother, Miley Aaron.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Manning High School with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister Thomas Conyers, the Rev. Dr. D.L. Grant Sr., the Rev. Mose Dingle and the Rev. John Johnson, presiding.

Burial was in Calvary-Zion Hill Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Lue Ida B. King

Lue Ida Bennett King, 81, widow of Raleigh King Sr., died Friday, April 11, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 27, 1926, in the Wilson community of Manning, she was a daughter of the late Miller Bennett and Harriett Mack Bennett.

She received her general equivalency diploma from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her savior and joined William Chapel Christian Church where she was a faithful lifelong member, serving on the spiritual committee. She was a chef at the Manning Howard Johnson’s restaurant and then served as dietician manager at Wateree Community Action Head Start in Alcolu.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Surviving are three sons, Charles (Anna) King and Raleigh (Loretta) King Jr., both of Manning, and Phillip (Carolyn) King of Sumter; a daughter, Sharon (Bo) Billups of Manning; two sisters, Everlena Fleming of Manning and Mildred (Hoover) Nelson of Paxville; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at William Chapel Christian Church in Manning, with the Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, eulogist, the Rev. Lawrence Dozier presiding and the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough and the Rev. Barney Dozier Sr. assisting.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Hugh L. DuBose

Hugh LeRoy DuBose, 60, husband of Mary Ida Zeigler DuBose, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born August 31, 1946, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Luther LeRoy and Elizabeth McFaddin DuBose. He was a teacher at Kingstree High School, and a member of New Zion United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a son, Hugh Kennedy(Gabriela) DuBose of Grants Pass, Ore.; a daughter, Elizabeth Marie DuBose (Louis) Brockinton of New Zion; a sister, Sara Elizabeth DuBose Williamson of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a granddaughter, Adela Mia DuBose of Grants Pass, Ore.; and a grandson, Mason Edward Brockinton of New Zion.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 12, 2007, at New Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charlie Brookshire officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were William Earle DuBose, Richard Odiorne, Walter Odiorne, Rocky Stewart, Benton Blakely and Jimmy Myers.

Memorials may be made to New Zion United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 31, New Zion, S.C. 29111.

Stephens Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Norman L. Coker

Mr. Norman Lloyd Coker, age 69, died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at his residence after an illness.

Born in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Wilbur Coker and Edith White Wilson Coker.

Mr. Coker was retired from the South Carolina Highway Department, Maintenance Division; worked for Clarendon County School District 3 as a groundskeeper; and was junior varsity softball head coach at East Clarendon High School.

Mr. Coker was a member of the Hebron United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a half-brother, Lloyd Coker.

Mr. Coker is survived by his wife, Judith “Judy” O. Coker of the home; a daughter, Susan Elaine Coker of Turbeville; a son, Warren Wilson Coker of Florence; a half-sister, Liz Jenkins of Georgetown; three half-brothers, Harvey (Lenora) Coker and Don (Barbara) Coker of Kingstree and Larry (Jane) Coker of Turbeville; and one grandchild, Austin Tyler Coker of Turbeville.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, in the chapel of Floyd Funeral Home.

Burial followed in the Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri County, 1236 B Wilson Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150, or the East Clarendon Softball Program, P.O. Box 270, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Anna Mae S. Murray

Anna Mae Stroy Murray, 63, wife of Alfred Murray, died April 20, 2007, at Providence Hospital, Columbia.

Born March 31, 1944, in the Bloomville section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Magnolia Spry Stroy and the late James Stroy. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church and later Holy Rock Holiness Church, where she served as secretary, a member of the senior choir, vice president of the missionary department, usher board, and secretary for the Union of the True Church of the Living God. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was employed by Tuomey Healthcare System, Sumter, Clarendon School District 2 and Wateree Community Action Agency, Manning.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred Murray of the home; her mother, Magnolia Spry Stroy of Manning; three daughters, Christina (Marvin) Williams and Cynthia (Lester) Doughty, both of Manning, and Cassandra (Yvette) Murray of Fort Mill; one adopted brother, Deacon Willie L. (Lula) Thompson of Manning; two sisters, Emily (Roy) Brown of Manning and Pamela (Clark) Fields of Columbia; one adopted sister, Etha Mae Thompson of Manning; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Willie S. Stroy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, pastor, officiating, assisting Overseer Elder Early Singletary, the Rev. Fred Snyder, the Rev. Shirley Dickey and Minister Harry Robinson.

Burial was in the Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

William T. Gibson

William Thomas Gibson, 90, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Thomas Gibson and Mamie Fludd Thompson. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In 1934, William married Mary McCloud and from this union of more than 30 years, eight children were born. He and his family relocated to New York City in 1940, where he took various jobs to provide for his family. As time progressed, he became a longshoreman. He retired from the Wil-more Corp. as a forklift operator.

After the death of his first wife in 1965, he married Mary Briggs Witherspoon and they shared 30 years together.

After the death of his second wife in 1998, Deacon Gibson moved back to South Carolina, where he met and married Emma Stukes and became a member of Gum Springs Missionary Baptist Church, Silver.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Jr. and Eugene Gibson, and two grandchildren, Mary Brown and Lakeishea Gibson.

Deacon Gibson leaves to cherish his memories, three sons, J. Kamau Gibson of Atlanta, Ga., Joseph Gibson of Manhattan, N.Y., and Talli Gibson of Jamaica, N.Y.; four daughters, Julia Gibson of Sumter, Mamie Gibson of Paxville, Mattie Gibson of Bronx, N.Y., and Beatrice Hill of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Eula Graham of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Willie P. Thompson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, stepchildren, other close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Gum Springs Missionary Baptist Church, Silver, with the Rev. Corey Thompson, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton and Grace Funeral Chapel of Brooklyn were in charge of the arrangements.

Kiaria S. Lloyd

Kiaria “Kiki” Simone Lloyd, 11, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at her residence in New Zion.

Born March 15, 1997, in Charleston, she was a daughter of Laquincy McKnight and Shantella J. Lloyd. She attended Walker-Gamble Elementary School, New Zion, and Manning Elementary School. Reared in a Christian home, she attended Howard Chapel AME Church, where she was a member of the Sunday school, Allen Stars, mass choir and praise dancers.

Survivors include her mother, Shantella Juanita Lloyd of the home; father, Laquincy McKnight of Florence; maternal grandparents, William (Ella) Calvin Sr. of Alcolu; paternal grandmother, Beatrice McKnight of Olanta; paternal grandfather, Gary Rush of Richmond, Va.; step-grandfather, Jimmy Lloyd of Turbeville; godmother, Cynthia Lloyd of Charleston; godfather, Marvin Lloyd of Lithonia, Ga.; 16 aunts; 11 uncles; 16 grandaunts; and 10 granduncles.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, two uncles, two aunts and one cousin.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Walker-Gamble Elementary School in New Zion, with the Rev. Jerome McCray presiding, Pastor Odell Brown, eulogist, assisting the Rev. Alfred Bradley and Minister Arkus Frierson.

Burial followed in the Howard Chapel AME Church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
