Colie Wooten

DARLINGTON — Colie Brown Wooten, 91, of Darlington, S.C. and formerly of St. Stephen, died Thursday, December 16, 2004.

The funeral will be 3:00 PM Sunday afternoon, December 19, 2004, at the First Baptist Church, St. Stephen. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 6:00 until 8:00 PM this Saturday evening. Directed by the St. Stephen Chapel of Dial-Murray Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wooten was born December 19, 1912 in Friendfield, S.C. a daughter of the late Thomas Preston Brown and Nancy Stephens Brown. She was the widow of John Robert Wooten and was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Leon I. Schurlknight, and eight brothers and sisters. Mrs. Wooten was a graduate of J.C. Lynch High School and Southeastern Commercial College and attended Winthrop College and Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.

Mrs. Wooten was devoted to her Lord, family, and to serving her church, community, and State. She was a member of First Baptist Church of St. Stephen where she served as church organist for over 40 years.

Mrs. Wooten was Associational WMU Missionary of the Charleston and Screven Association, State Mission Study Chairman of South Carolina Women’s Missionary Union and served for five years on The Board of Directors.

Mrs. Wooten was President of the Berkeley County Cancer Society for 19 years and a member of the Berkeley County Department of Social Services for over 25 years. She was named “Woman of the Year” in Berkeley County in 1958 for her outstanding work in the American Cancer Society, church, PTA, Community Fair, Garden Club, St. Stephen Library, St. Stephen Health Center, County Planning Committee, Chamber of Commerce, and the Federation of WMS of St. Stephen and Russellville.

Mrs. Wooten, affectionately known as “Miss Colie,” touched the lives of many children in her community through the Jack and Jill Kindergarten which she operated for 17 years.

Mrs. Wooten was a contributing reporter for The Berkeley Democrat for many years and authored the book The Brown Saga of Remembrance on the history of her family. Mrs. Wooten’s motto for her life was “Only one life - twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.”

Mrs. Wooten is survived by three daughters, Ann W. Sanders, Nancy W. Schurlknight, and Johnie R. Wooten; Son-in-Law William D. Sanders; five grandchildren, John L. Schurlknight and wife Malinda, Sheri S. Thompson and husband Matt, William D. Sanders, Jr. and wife Jill, Rebecca S. Malcom and husband Steve, and Thomas P. Schurlknight; three great-grandchildren, Lee I. Schurlknight, Laura H. Schurlknight, and Savanna J. Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests that all graduates and attendees of “Miss Colie’s” Jack and Jill Kindergarten serve as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandson.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of St. Stephen, Sunset Memorial Cemetery, or Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in Friendfield.

James Welch Jr.

COLUMBIA — James C. Welch, Jr. or Jimmy as he was known to everyone, died Friday, December 17. He was 56 years old and the son of Mrs. Eleanore L. Welch and the late James C. Welch, Sr. of Columbia.

Jimmy graduated from USC with a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry, and was a member of the National Merit Honor Society. He participated for more than 15 years in the Tour de Columbia and the MS Bike Ride. He had a deep love for baseball and enjoyed listening to or watching the game. His favorite team was the Red Sox. He was a die-hard Rusty Wallace fan (#2 car) and never missed going to the Darlington Speedway for the NASCAR races. His hobbies included going to garage sales and collecting antiques. Because of his love of animals, one of the events he looked forward to the most was the auction held by the Animal Protection League (APL).

Surviving: brother, Michael C. Welch and wife, Terri; sisters, Kathy D. Welch, Wilma L. Magyar, Eleanor E. Long and husband, Greg; nieces, Margie Barclay and husband, Frank, Dena Cousar, Laura Welch; nephews, Jerry Magyar, Jr. Al Cousar and wife, Sandy, Chet Long and wife, Amber, Brian Welch; great-nieces, Jessica, Macy, Cassidy and great-nephews, Christian, Justin, Trey, Anthony.

Memorial services for James C. Welch, Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 20 at the Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in memory of Jimmy to the Animal Protection League in Columbia.

Jimmy will be remembered as a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. For the Checkered Flag Club “Gentlemen, start your engines” will never be the same at Darlington.

Azalee Corley

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Azalee Roof Corley, 78, will be held at 11am Tuesday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by Reverend Kay Overcash, with burial at the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2491 Emmanuel Church Rd., West Columbia, SC 29170. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm tonight at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

Mrs. Corley died Saturday, December 18, 2004. Born in West Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Jobe and Irene Sox Roof. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her husband, Ellis S. Corley of West Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Delaine and Wayne Cox of West Columbia, Nancy and Ted Spinella of Lexington; sisters, Nola Roof, Annie Monts, and Stella Shuler, all of West Columbia; brother, Jimmy Roof of West Columbia; grandchildren, Todd Carson of Leesville and Beverly Callender of Orlando, FL. She was predeceased by her sisters, Lucille Fulmer and Mildred Seay.

The family would like to thank the Staff of LMC Extended Care for their love and support over the past few years.

Mavis Floyd

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Mrs. Mavis Louise Crockett Floyd, 82, widow of the late William T. Floyd, of Columbia, will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Following the burial, family and friends will gather at the home of the late Mavis Floyd. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Floyd entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 18, 2004. Born in Dothan, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Grady S. Crockett and Vea Hardee Crockett. She was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Floyd was greatly devoted to her family and friends and she had a great love for gardening and was an avid lady angler.

Surviving are her daughters, Janice Reese of Columbia, SC and Laura Carlton and her husband Bobby of Isle of Palms, SC; one son, John Floyd and his wife Nancy of Gilbert, SC; a sister, Nadine Wilson; brothers, Randolph, Joe, and Wayne Crockett; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Stacey Hobgood-Seiple

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Stacey Ann Hobgood, 19, of West Columbia, will be held at 1pm Tuesday in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Pastor Jim Hogan. Burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-8pm Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders c/o American Cancer Society.

Ms. Hobgood died Friday, December 17, 2004. Born in Savannah, GA on July 8, 1985, she was the daughter of Beverly and John Seiple and Richard and Debra Hobgood. She was a 2004 graduate of White Knoll High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She attended North Metro Technical College in Acworth, GA.

Surviving are her parents, Beverly and John Seiple of West Columbia and Rick and Debra Hobgood of Lexington; sisters, Lindsey Hobgood and Brittney Lambert, both of West Columbia; step-brother, Scott McCravy of Lexington; grandparents, Bill and Charlotte Brand, Rex and Louise Hobgood, and Barbara Seiple; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ms. Hobgood was predeceased by grandparents, Mary Ann Brand and Harold Seiple.

Rubye Johnson

LEXINGTON — Service for Rubye Ratchford Johnson, 94, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, York, at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the S.C. Presbyterian Home Resident Aid Fund, 700 DaVega Drive, Lexington, S.C. 29073.

Mrs. Johnson, wife of the late Olav V. Johnson, died Saturday, December 18, 2004. Born in Stuttgart, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Maurice Oliver Volentine and Ethel Myatt Volentine. She received a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of Alabama. A realtor for twenty-eight years, she was named as first South Carolina Realtor of the Year in 1955. Also in 1955, she was honored at the National Real Estate Convention in New York as one of the top twelve Oustanding Realtors of the Year in the nation. She was active in the Business and Professional Womens Club and initiated the establishment of the Real Estate Board in Aiken, serving as its first president.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Columbia and a resident of the Presbyterian Home for eighteen years.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Clyde B. , Jr. and Lease F. Ratchford of Myrtle Beach and David M. and Sylvia M. Ratchford of Columbia; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Clyde Banks Ratchford, Sr. and daughter, Betty Ratchford Pinney.

Richard Gunter

AIKEN — Funeral services for Mr. Richard G. Gunter will be held Monday, December 20, 2004, at 3 PM at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Aiken, SC with Reverend Gene Mulliken officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens, Graniteville, SC.

Mr. Gunter, 77, of Aiken, SC, died Friday afternoon, December 17, 2004 at University Hospital, Augusta, GA.

Born in and a lifelong resident of Aiken County, SC, he was a son of the late Elliott B. and Camilla Kennedy Gunter. A World War II veteran, he proudly served his country in the United States Army where he obtained the rank of Corporal. Mr. Gunter was in partnership with his son Scott in Tri-Chek Seeds, Inc., Augusta, GA. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Aiken, SC where he was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and was also a member of the American Legion Post 26, Voiture Locale 1177 Forty & Eight, GA & SC Seedsmen’s Associations, and the Southern Field Seed Council.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Jean McClain Gunter; sons, Richard Glenn Gunter, M.D., (Diane) Rock Hill, SC and Scott Douglas Gunter, (Sandra) Aiken, SC; sisters, Christine Caprell, Aiken, SC and Ruby Mangum, Summerville, SC; grandchildren, John H. Gunter, Olivia L. Gunter, and Bradd William Sasser; and a great-granddaughter, Caitlin Marie Sasser.

The family has asked that memorials be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 809, Aiken, SC 29802 or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1247 Lake Murray Blvd., Irmo, SC 29063.
