Samantha Jean Kinville

WESTMINSTER, Vt. — Samantha Jean Kinville, infant daughter of Dean and Susan (Richburg) Kinville died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, where she had received loving care from the doctors, nurses and staff.

She is survived by her parents; one brother, Jed Kinville; and three sisters, Ashley and Amy Dennis and Reine Richburg, all of Westminster; her maternal grandmother, Avis Jean Richburg of Manning; and her paternal grandmother, Ruth Kinville of Swanzey, N.H.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, in the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Chapel.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H. 03766.

Hale Funeral Home of Bradford, Vt., was in charge of arrangements.

Julia Appelt Ives

Julia Appelt Ives, born January 23, 1917 died on Sunday, Nov. 11, 1006 at the Hickory Nursing Home of Honey Brook, Pa., following an illness.

She was born in Manning, S.C. and was the daughter of the late John McLaurin and Thomasine (Sprott) Appelt. Julia married Clement Dixon “Jack” Ives Sr. in March of 1940. She was a devoted wife until his death in October of 1967.

Julia attended Winthrop College then worked as a lab technician. In 1950, they took their children and went to Venezuela, South America, where their fifth child was born. Her husband was the chief engineer for Creole Petroleum Corporation, until returning to the states in 1959.

After returning to the states, they settled in Lawrenceville, N.J. Julia was a gifted seamstress, who made her own clothes and was widely known for her adorable Raggedy Ann dolls and many other crafts that were sold in the area. Julia later moved closer to family in Pennsylvania, residing in the Exton and Elverson areas. She enjoyed her family and many friends she had made up to her last days of life.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Julia is survived by her five children, Diana Ives Toth of Logan, Utah; Patricia Ives Nass of Glenmoore, Pa.; Michelle Ives Scott of Mason, N.H.; Clement Dixon Ives Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Bruce McLaurin Ives of Southport, N.C. There are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Sybil Holliday of Myrtle Beach and a brother, Thomas Selwyn Appelt of Washington, Ga.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at The Labs Funeral Home in Honey Brook, Pa.

Interment was private.

Memorial contributions may be made in the memory of Julia to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 711, Coatesville, Pa., 19320-0711.

Maurice W. Hodges

Maurice Walter Hodges, 70, husband of Joyce Mildred Harpur Hodges, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at his home.

Born in Oneonta, N.Y., he was a son of the late Walter Louis Hodges and the late Mona Louise Jacques Hodges Spencer. Mr. Hodges was a retired truck driver with the city of Palm Bay, Fla., and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a son, Chris (Dawn) Hodges of Summerton; a daughter, Celeste Guyton of Columbia; two brothers, Robert Bjork of Summerfield, Fla., and Charles Bjork of Long Mount, Colo.; three sisters, Nancy Lifgren of Schenevus, N.Y., Elyce Burkhardt of Lithia, Fla., and Margaret Snyder of Baltimore, Md.; two grandchildren, Hunter Hodges and Jessica Guyton; and two great-grandchildren, Dontorian Best and Aryiana Best.

Memorial services were held on Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

George M. White

PINEWOOD – Mr. George Morant White, 77, of Pinewood, entered eternal rest at Tuomey Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007. Born Feb. 6, 1929, he was a son of the late Sammie White and Alberta Johnson White James and the widower of Dorcus Green White.
He was educated in the schools of Clarendon County. He was a faithful member of New Hope AME Church, where he served as the chairman of the Steward Board, Pastor Steward, chairman of the Class Leader Ministry and Church Sexton. He retired from Santee Print Works of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three sons, Earl Green, Harry L. White and Kinston White.
He leaves to cherish his memories, six sons, Mr. George White Sr. of Larton, Va., Mr. James (Jeanie) White, Rev. Cary White, both of Columbia, Mr. Alonzo White, Rev. Norman White, both of Rimini, and Rev. Shedrick (Donald) White of Pinewood; a brother, Mr. Abbie White of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Lorena Robinson and Ms. Geneva White, both of Baltimore, Md.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Rosa Riley of Rimini; a loyal friend, Mrs. Martha Richburg of Summerton; 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, in the New Hope AME Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Edwards, pastor, officiating, and the Revs. Norman White, Shedrick White, Jack Dias, Josephine Gilyard, Linda Simmons and Leroy T. James.
Burial followed in the New Hope Church Cemetery.
Community Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lizzie C. Davis

PINEWOOD – Lizzie Carter Davis, 88, widow of Deacon Willie Davis, died Jan. 25, 2007, at her daughter’s residence.

Born Aug. 16, 1918, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Elliott Carter and Hattie Witherspoon Carter. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Taw Caw Baptist Church and was a member of the usher board and young adult choir. After her marriage, she joined Mount Zero Baptist Church and was a member of the senior choir and deaconess board.

Survivors include one son, Willie L. (Bernice) Davis of Pinewood; two daughters, the Rev. Mary L. Hamilton of Pinewood and Hattie Davis-Hudson (Willie P.) of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Rueben Davis Sr., four brothers, and three sisters.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Mount Zero Baptist Church, S.C. 261, with the Rev. Henry Presley, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Terry Johnson, the Rev. William Scott and the Rev. James Carter Jr.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Elsie Faye M. Watts

Elsie Faye “Gertie” Morris Watts, 82, widow of James E. Watts, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Calvin Morris and the late Josephine Atkinson Morris. She was a member of Open Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Wayne (Gloria) Watts of Manning, Gene (Angie) Watts of Darlington, Robert (Darlene) Watts of Sumter, Allen (Lucile) Watts of Lynchburg, and Tommy (Janet) Watts of Sumter; two daughters-in-law, Lynda Watts of Sumter and Carolyn Morris of Manning; 11 grandchildren, Missy Brown, Faye Morris, Allison Stanfield, Ruthy Feagin, Gigi Houser, Katherine Watts, Nichole Watts, Whitney Watts, Mary Beth Watts, Bert Watts, and David Watts; 14 great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Betsy Watts.

She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Watts; a grandson, Jamie Watts; a sister, Edna Jones; and two brothers, Emmett Morris and Leslie Morris.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Open Bible Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Hummel and the Rev. Terry Byrd officiating.

Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Watts, Bert Watts, Homer Morris, Ray Watts, Hal Watts and Gerald Watts.

Memorials may be made to Open Bible Baptist Church, 180 Old Manning Road, Sumter, S.C. 29154.

Herbert H. Horton

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – Herbert H. Horton, age 70, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at his residence in Niagara Falls.

Born Sept. 24, 1936, he was a son of the late Henry Horton and Emma Ragin Horton. At an early age, he joined Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton. Upon graduation from Scott’s Branch High School, Herbert joined the U.S. Army. After traveling to serve his country, Herbert decided to make Niagara Falls his place of residence.

He leaves to cherish many memories: one son, Herbert Horton Jr. of Niagara Falls; a devoted friend for more than 30 years, Louise Herds of Niagara Falls; one brother, George Bradshaw of Miami, Fla.; two sisters, Rosa Horton Tindal of Statesboro, N.C., and Ruby Broderick of Tampa, Fla.; one special sister-in-law, Curley Horton of Santee; special nieces, Carstine Horton of Santee, Shirley Harrington of Hephzibah, Ga., Toley Brown of Augusta, Ga., and Barbara Johnson of North Carolina.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, in the Chapel of Dyson’s Home for Funerals, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiating and the Rev. Thomas Horton as eulogist.

Final resting place was at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals was in charge of the arrangements.

Harriet C. Brown

Harriet C. Brown Brown, 87, wife of Baxter Theron Brown Sr., died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 13, 1919, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Edward Bunyan Brown Sr. and the late Isabella Holladay Brown. She was a member of Manning United Methodist Church and a retired nurse’s aide at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are two daughters, Isabelle Holladay Brown and Neal (Donnie) Mahoney of Manning; a son, Ron Brown Jr. of Columbia; a sister, Sara Margaret Vassar of Manning; three grandchildren, Mary Howton, Marie Powell and Donald Mahoney; and three great-grandchildren, Sean Hutto, Kathryn Hutto and Hawkins Powell.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles Brown Jr., Darrell Turner, Stephen Bauer, Stephen Strickland, Steven Powell and Donald Mahoney.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Clarendon County Council on Aging, P.O. Box 522, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Joseph T. Spivey

Joseph Terry Spivey, 44, of Manning, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, in a Florence hospital. He was born June 4, 1962, in Florence.

He was predeceased by his mother, Jane Spivey Miles.

He graduated from West Florence High School in 1981 and graduated from Francis Marion University. Mr. Spivey was a shipping manager for Harvin Choice Meats in Sumter. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Army.

Among his survivors are a brother, Melvin (Jennifer) Spivey of Florence; uncle, George (Barbara) Terry of Florence; aunt, Dorothy Terry of Orlando, Fla.; nephews, Alan and Ian Spivey of Florence; stepfather, Hubert Miles; and stepbrothers, Steve (Sandra) Miles of Latta and Russell (Diane) Miles of Florence.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, in Cain Funeral Home Chapel in Florence, with Rev. Henry M. Moody Jr. officiating.

Committal followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorials should be made to the American Lung Association of South Carolina, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, S.C. 29201-2392.

Robert B. Nichols

Robert Benny Nichols, 74, husband of Sarah J. Lyles Nichols, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at his home.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William Nathan Nichols and the late Mattie Scott Nichols. He was retired from Southern Coatings after 32 years of service.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Robert Nichols and his wife, Jennifer, and Jimmy Nichols, all of Sumter; four daughters, Debra Newman and her husband, Chris, Karen Goff and her husband, Mike, and Sarah Lynn Nichols, all of Sumter, and Brenda Speas and her husband, Al, of Mayben, N.C.; a sister, Mary Ruth Turner of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Nathaniel Brown and Ray Foxworth officiating.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
