John M. Friel

John M. Friel, 63, husband of Linda Dennis Friel, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, at his home.

Born in Manning, he was the son of the late William Leo Friel and the late Lela Mae White Friel Collins. Mr. Friel was self-employed and was part owner of Linda’s Grill in Pinewood. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are his wife of Pinewood; a son, Louie William “Bill” Friel and wife, Charlene, of Sumter; two daughters, Sara Jones and husband, Ray, of Sumter and Melissa Hayden and husband, Scott, of Texas; three sisters, Madlin Brown, Marcell Hill and husband, Larry, and Drucilla Lynch and husband, Larry, all of Sumter; three brothers, William Leo “Bubba” Friel and wife, Linda, and the Rev. Donnie Collins and wife, Miriam, all of Sumter, and Lynwood Collins of Summerton; and 11 grandchildren.

Mr. Friel was preceded in death by a brother, David Collins.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006, in the Wells Cemetery with the Rev. Benny Barwick officiating.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 115 N. Sumter St., Suite 410, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Charlie L. Thigpen

LAKE CITY – Charlie Lewis Thigpen, age 76, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at his residence after an illness.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Edward Lewis Thigpen and Mary Sue Coker Thigpen. Mr. Thigpen was a retired diesel mechanic, a farmer and a member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as the treasurer of his Sunday school class.

Mr. Thigpen was preceded in death by three sisters, Ofell Thigpen, Zelma Christmas and Lucille Yarborough; and two brothers, Bob Thigpen and Johnnie Harris Thigpen.

Surviving are his wife, Vivian Watts Thigpen of Lake City; two stepdaughters, Brenda Powell of Turbeville and Elaine Smith of Florence; one stepson, Jamie Dennis of Turbeville; five sisters, Eula Mae Branham of Bishopville, Olean Porter of Alcolu, Cathleen Castrignano of Olanta, Faye Lee Floyd and Janie Mims, both of Lake City; eight step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial followed in McElveen Cemetery.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Hoyt Herlong

Hoyt Herlong, 70, of Manning, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006.

Mr. Herlong was born in Nichols, a son of the late Johnny William Herlong and Nancy Caroline Floyd Herlong. He was a retired master sergeant of the U.S. Air Force, having served in Thailand, France and two tours in Vietnam.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester Herlong, J.L. Herlong and Jimmy Herlong; and a sister, Linda Skipper.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Herlong of the home; a son, Hoyt Henson Herlong; a daughter, Sharon Kay Herlong; brothers, Harold Herlong, Bobby Herlong, Floyd Herlong and Danny Herlong; sisters, Janise Harrelson and Shelby Campbell; and grandchildren, Laura Jayne Herlong and Kyle Henson Herlong.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols, directed by Richardson Funeral Home of Marion.

Memorials may be sent to Shriner’s Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605.

Heyward A. Graham

Heyward Arthur Graham, 62, companion of Ruth Pressley, died Oct. 21, 2006, in New Zion.

Born Aug. 1, 1944, in New Zion, he was a son of the late Heyward T. Graham and Marie Brand Graham. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Walker-Gamble High School. He accepted Christ as his Savior and joined St. John AME Church, where he remained a member.

Survivors include three sons, Arthur Daniel Graham, Christopher (Bisquis) Graham and Oliver (Robertha) Graham; five daughters, Shelia (Caesar) Dukes, Michelle (Rodney) Tucker, Belinda Holmes Graham, Marie Graham and Paulette Graham; two brothers, Leroy Graham and Curtis (Alena) Graham; five sisters, Ollie Graham, Mary Pearl Graham, Rebecca (David) Gamble, Idella G. Seabrook and Deloris Wheeler; and 20 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at St. John AME Church in the Workman community of Kingstree, with the Rev. Fredrick Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. B.L. Green.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie P. Dew

Marjorie Prince Dew, 84, widower of Walter L. Dew, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at a local nursing center.

Born in Horrell Hill, she was the daughter of the late Frank Marion Prince and the late Beatrice Curran Prince. Mrs. Dew was a retired bookkeeper with Avery Lumber Co. with more than 30 years of service and was a member of Ashwood Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Wally T. (Donna) Dew of Summerton and Eddie F. (Karen) Dew of Sumter; a sister, Frances Lockhart of Sumter; a brother, LeVern Prince of Sumter; four grandchildren, Justin Hyatt of Sumter, Lance, Daniel and Jessica Dew, all of Summerton; one great-grandchild, Bryanna Dew of Summerton; and a special caregiver, Louise Epperson.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Drew Choate officiating.

Burial was in the Ashwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike Prince, Mark Prince, Sean Prince, Justin Hyatt, Lance Dew, Daniel Dew, Eric Prince and Mick Connors.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202.

James Edward Bruner Sr.

James Edward “Jimmy” Bruner, Sr., 75, widower of Virginia Beatty Bruner, died Sunday, October 29, 2006, in Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born June 24, 1931, in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late John Wallace Bruner, Sr. and the late Zilpha Ellen Hutto Bruner. He was owner and operator of Bruner’s of Orangeburg for over 40 years, a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Manning, past master of Progress Lodge 356 in Orangeburg, past president and life member of Edisto Shrine Club, shriner of Omar Shrine Temple in Mt. Pleasant, a York Rite Mason and a Scottish Rite Mason. Mr. Bruner joined the Clarendon County Fire Department in 1979, was a charter member of Station 8 in Taw Caw, served as a lieutenant, and most recently served as station captain for the last six years. He was named Fire Fighter of the Year in 1996.

Surviving are a son, James Edward “Jay” (Angie Nalley) Bruner, Jr. of Summerton; grandchildren, Abbie Bruner and Jeb Bruner; two brothers, Robert C. (Wyatt) Bruner of Orangeburg, and John W. (Virl) Bruner, Jr. of Summerton; two sisters, Marie B. (Bobby) Brown of Branchville and Sara B. Psillos of Darlington.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006, in New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Manning, with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating.

Burial with full Masonic rites followed in St. Paul Cemetery in Summerton.

Pallbearers were Carter H. Jones, Carl W. Floyd, Thomas D. Keels, John W. Bruner III, Robert C. Bruner Jr. and Dr. Henry P. “Mutt” Bozard.

Honorary pallbearers were officers and members of the Clarendon County Fire Department.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605-4277 or to New Covenant Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 2833 Alex Harvin Hwy., Manning, S.C. 29102.

William A. Blanding Sr.

William Arthur Blanding Sr., 56, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Faith Health Care Nursing Home Center, Florence.

Born Feb. 6, 1950, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Frank Blanding Sr. and Verlen Blanding. He was also the husband of Julia Faye Barr Blanding. In his early childhood, he attended the public schools of Sumter County. During his adult life, he was employed by MP Goodkins Industries in Newark, N.J., for numerous years, and later as an industrial bridge carpenter in Cheraw until his retirement. William joined Antioch United Methodist Church at an early age.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Faye Barr Blanding; one daughter, Ola B. (Clint) Caldwell; two sons, William Arthur Blanding Jr., all of Lake City, and Darnell Jenkins of Sumter; two grandsons, Clint DeShawn Caldwell of Lake City and Ja’Sir William Blanding of Turbeville; two brothers, Larry and Herbert Blanding; one sister, Jesse Verlen Blanding; four aunts, Corine (Douglas) Peterson, Martha (Wade) Bennett, Nancy Smalls, Lillie Mae Abrams; one uncle, JP (Belle) Abrams, all of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Robert, and Frank Blanding Jr.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel at Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter, with the Rev. Frank E. Williams Sr. officiating, eulogist.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

Floral bearers were family and friends.

Burial was in the Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sumter.

George Bennett Jr.

George Bennett Jr., 66, of Sumter, entered eternal rest at his home, on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006.

George was born Oct. 1, 1940, in Clarendon County, a son of the late George Bennett Sr. and Lottie Pearlena Mouzon Bennett. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He attended Greater Love Fellowship Church.

George is survived by two brothers, Herman Bennett of Sumter and Bishop Harold Lee Bennett of Hartsville; four sisters, Shirley Kennedy and Pearlena McDowell, both of Sumter, Mary Huffman of Homestead, N.Y., and Gloria Bennett of Patterson, N.J.; one uncle, Khia Bennett of New York, N.Y.; two aunts, Martha Armstrong of Fayetteville, N.C., and Sally Mouzon of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Wilson, officiating.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Tiny M. Lincoln

Tiny “Lay” McBride Lincoln, age 61, widow of Jimmy Lincoln, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born on Sunday, Aug. 26, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Agnes “Florence” McBride White. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her savior. She became a member of Antioch RMUE Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the missionary board and both the senior and combined choirs. One of the things she enjoyed most was supporting her pastor and singing with the combined choir.

Fond memories of Tiny will be cherished by her two sons, Ronnie McBride of the home and Vincent (Tinnie) Lincoln of Pinewood; four sisters, Victoria (David) Scott, Myrtle (Norman) Sinkler, Camilla McConico and Geraldine Johnson, all of Pinewood; six brothers, Henry (Dessie) McBride, Johnnie (Rosa Mae) McBride and Omega White, all of Wilmington, N.C., Bernell Williams of Richmond, Va., C.L. (Katie) Williams of Sumter and James (Priscilla) Williams of Thomasville, N.C.; her mother-in-law, Claudine Lincoln, and brother-in-law, Jerome Lincoln, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at Antioch RMUE Church, Rimini, with the Rev. Ronald Wine, pastor, officiating.

Final resting place was the Spring Grove Cemetery in Rimini.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Mittie D. Hilton

FLORENCE – Mittie Doris Hilton, 64, wife of Amos Hilton, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born Nov. 21, 1942, in Pinetops, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Lester Atkinson and Leeora Hyman Atkinson. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Pinetops. She was employed as an electrical technician with Vectron Laboratories in Norwalk, Conn., for 30 years. For 27 years, she was a member of Miracle Faith World Outreach Ministry and served as a counselor for the youth and also helped organize the Manna Feeding Ministry. After moving to Manning, she was a member of the Brethren Fellowship Outreach Ministry. She was also employed with Piggly Wiggly in the bakery department for two years.

Survivors include two sons, Monti (Rochelle) Hilton of Jacksonville, Fla., and Raymond Johnson-Hilton of Bridgeport, Conn.; two daughters, Sharon H. (Travis) Williams of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Patricia V. (Wilbert) Holliday of Manning; one brother, Charlie (Lucy) Atkinson of Wilson, N.C.; five sisters, Thelma Fuller of New Haven, Conn., Martha R. (Forest) Knight of Spring Lake, N.C., Mamie Darden of Bridgeport, Helen Johnson of New Jersey and Ruth (Morris) Davis of Vance; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at Manning Elementary School in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Bobby Davis officiating, assisted by Minister Mildred Braswell, Evangelist Geraldine Dennis, Pastor Christine Davis, Pastor Patricia Dawkins and Pastor Maxwell Egbonim.

Burial was in Society Hill AME Church Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.
