Mary H. Godwin

Cheraw, S.C. – Mary Hodge Godwin, 78, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007. She was born on Dec. 22, 1928 in Sumter, S.C., the daughter of the late Jay Gould and Jimmie Tudor Hodge.

She was a graduate of Coker College majoring in voice and piano. Mrs. Godwin taught piano and was a contralto soloist for many years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, children’s choirs and sang in the choir. Her joy in life was being surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild.

Mrs. Godwin will be most remembered for the Christian witness and love that she displayed in her everyday life, which she passed on to her children and many friends. “Mimi”(as known to her grandchildren) will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Winston Y. Godwin Sr., a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lynn (Rev. Garland) Hart of Summerton and five sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Winston Y. (Kimberly) Godwin Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Rev. Paul L. (Laura Anne) Godwin and Michael Luke (Mary Ann) Godwin all of Cheraw, and Dr. David Alan (Jane) Godwin and Roger Thomas (Janet) Godwin of Greer, S.C.; 24 grandchildren, Ashley, Anna, Courtney, Kimberly, Amy, Mary-Chase, Paul, Anne Elizabeth, Katherine, Kristin, Kirk, Jeannie, Ben, David, Mary Elizabeth, Anna Grace, Hannah, Alan, Jennifer, Luke, Thomas, Andrew, Kathryn and Emily and great-grandchild Camryn. She is also survived by her sister Mrs. Betty Eubanks of Augusta, Ga.
She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Loretta Briggs and a brother, Dr. Jay Earl Hodge.

The family would like to thank the staff and physicians at Chesterfield Convalescent Center and Edna Wallace and Jeanne Johnson for their help and kindness during Mrs. Godwin’s illness.

A service to celebrate the life of Mary Hodge Godwin was held on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007 at First Baptist Church in Cheraw with the Rev. Richard L. Young officiating.

Memorials should be made to the Mary Godwin Christian Scholarship Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 337, Cheraw, S.C. 29520.

Bessie R. Floyd

Bessie Robinson Floyd, 93, widow of David Tillman Floyd Sr., died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Douglas Wesley Robinson and the late Lilly Bell Player Robinson. Mrs. Floyd was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, David Tillman (Jean) Floyd Jr. of Sumter; a sister, Myrtle Chelluk of Lexington; a brother, Douglas Wesley Robinson Jr. of Summerton; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Billy Keith Floyd; a daughter, Vickie Floyd Jackson; and two brothers, Jack and Eli Robinson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Hudson and the Rev. Pete Hudson officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Doug Robinson, Ronnie Jackson, Gary Jackson, Wesley Robinson, Jimmy Robinson and Mark Chelluk.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Trudy F. DuPree

COLUMBIA – Mrs. Trudy Frierson DuPree, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, at Palmetto Health Baptist.

Born in Clarendon County on May 30, 1948, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Josephine Carter.

Trudy accepted Christ at an early age and joined Shiloh Baptist Church, Summerton, where she remained a member until joining her husband, the late Harry Frierson, at St. Matthew AME Church. She later met and married Jerome DuPree (Ieshia and Adrian).

Mrs. DuPree graduated from Scott’s Branch High School in 1967 and earned Bachelor of Arts and master’s degrees from Morris College and the University of South Carolina, respectively. Prior to retiring in 2006, she taught language arts and social studies in Sumter School District 2 for more than 30 years. She found great pleasure and satisfaction in the teaching profession and in the church where she worked in several capacities. Honors include Teacher of the Year 1997-1998, Furman Middle School; YPD assistant director and director; Sunday school superintendent and teacher; class leader; steward; Manning District Lay Officer and was a member of the missionary society. Mrs. DuPree was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be missed by many.

Those left to grow from her love and celebrate her memory are her husband; her daughter Kia (the Rev. R.L.) Brown of Vance; her son; Wesley Harry Frierson, M.D., of Columbia; three grandchildren, Naci Kiari Brown, R.L. Brown III and Jasmine S. Brown of Vance; two sisters, Ms. Gloria C. Levy and Mrs. Janie C. (Derrick) Pringle, both of Columbia; two aunts, Lucretis Smythe of Charleston and Lillie M. Symthe of Summerton; six brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Services celebrating the life of Mrs. DuPree were held on Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Manuel Fogle officiating.

Interment followed at St. Matthew AME Church.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Blondel T. Delaney

Blondel Thelma Delaney was born to the late Bertie and Leila Mae Lawson Richardson on Jan. 8, 1933. She departed this life on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at her home.

She was raised in a Christian home with her parents, six sisters and two brothers.

Four sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

At an early age, she joined Liberty Hill AME Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. After graduating high school, she relocated to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she married Fred Delaney. Through this union, they were blessed with one child, Lendel Delaney. She worked for 11 years for the city of New York with adults with special needs. She was a faithful member of the Church of God In Christ under the direction of the late Pastor Geraldine MacDaniels of Brooklyn. In June of 1980, she returned home to help her ailing mother. She also renewed her membership with Liberty Hill AME Church. She worked for the Board of Education until she retired in 1994.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Lendel (John) Ross of Brooklyn; two grandchildren, Danielle Costen and Trever Costen, both of Brooklyn; two sisters, Willean Jordan of Brooklyn and Juanita Buchanan of Jamaica, W.I.; three brothers-in-law, Walter Jordan of Brooklyn, Aubrey Buchanan of Jamaica, W.I., and Robert Ragin of Sumter; two sisters-in-law, Amanda Richardson of Brooklyn and Maggie Ragin of Sumter; two aunts, Liola Lawson of Manning and Suester Richardson of Brooklyn; one great-aunt, Annette Warley; special people in her life, Yvonne Lewis, Vincent Bracey, Regina Mack, Melvin Costen, Jesse Lewis and Tamika Richardson. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. Melvin J. Capers, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Gary R. Bass Sr.

Gary Ross Bass Sr., 64, husband of Helen Robinson Bass, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at his home in Summerton.

Born May 28, 1942, in Old Hickory, Tenn., he was a son of the late Arthur Leonard and Willie Ruth Davidson Bass. He was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, a Mason, served as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, and was a supervisor at Yuasa (Sumter Metal Products) for 11 years. He was a kind, loving husband and father.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are a son, Gary Bass Jr. of Durham, N.C.; daughters, Sherry Bass Rawleigh of Summerton and Rhonda Mitchum of Manning; a brother, Wallace D. Bass of Charleston; a sister, Peggy J. Owens of Nashville, Tenn.; and three grandsons, Joshua Cannon, Jonathan and Benjamin Mitchum.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard D. and Ralph C. Bass; and a sister, Ema Jean.

A memorial service was held on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, in the Summerton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Allen officiating.

Memorials may be made to Summerton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 35, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Joe Lee Jackson

Joe Lee Jackson, 59, died Jan. 28, 2007, in Manning.

Born March 1, 1947, in the Live Oak section of Manning, he was a son of the late Ingram Jackson and Edna Major Jackson. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1966 graduate of Manning Training School. He accepted Christ as his Savior and attended Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include one daughter, Katie (Roy) Wilson of Olanta; two brothers, Johnny Lee (Nellie) Jackson of Lake City and Leroy “Hammer” Jackson; and one sister, Julia Mae Abraham of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor officiating, assisted by the Rev. Henry McCray.

Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Johnny McFadden Jr.

Johnny “Pete” McFadden Jr., 63, died Jan. 31, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Nov. 11, 1943, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Johnny McFadden Sr. and Annie Epps McFadden. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, graduating from Manning Training School in 1964. He was employed at the Sunbeam Co. in Manning for many years. He was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church, where he attended regularly until his health failed.

Survivors include six brothers, Booker T. (Nellie) McFadden of Alcolu, Henry (Vertelle) McFadden of Brandon, Fla., Richard (Delores) McFadden of Lewisburg, Pa., Truman McFadden and Alexander McFadden, both of Manning, Wendell (Cheryl) McFadden of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Louise McFadden of Queens Village, N.Y., Virginia (Gregory) Tucker of Elmont, N.Y., and Sara M. Hampton of Floral Park, N.Y.; one uncle, John Epps of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two aunts, Hattie Montgomery of Sumter and Rachel McFadden of Richmond, Va.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at Harmony Presbyterian Church (USA), Alcolu, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mary Rose-Hagen.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Terry Lee Strong

Terry Lee Strong, age 63, beloved husband of Kaye Lynn Lucas-Strong, died on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 at his residence in Manning.

He was born in Lebanon, Missouri, a son of the late Claude Strong and Edna Mae Gosslin Strong. He served in the United States Navy, was a member of the Local Union #630 and was a pipe fitter. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, John Drew of Raleigh, N.C. and Josef Drew of W. Palm Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Rhonda Kaye Strong of Orlando, Fla., Katherine Lee Strong of W. Palm Beach Kimberly Briones of Manning; one brother Dennis Strong of Texas; and four grandchildren, Kristin, Mathew, Miranda and Kaleigh.

Services were held privately.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Home Healthcare, 2650-B Hardee Cove, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Sara N. Allen

COLUMBIA – Mrs. Sara Margaret “Toop” Napier Allen, 78, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 after an extended illness.

Born June 3, 1928, in Manning, S.C., she was a daughter of the late James Lane and Sara Ann Wells Napier. She graduated from Manning High School and the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Allen lived her adult life in Columbia. She had many career interests including nursing, real estate and the florist business. She initiated the Docents Program at the S.C. Governor’s Mansion and was a long-time member of the Pine Garden Club. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she served for many years on the Flower Committee, sang in the choir and was a member of the Living Word Sunday School Class. In her later years, she had a passion for genealogical research, especially the Civil War history of her ancestors.

Her favorite pastime, however, was being with friends and family. She always treasured and enjoyed family gatherings at holidays and the beach and reunions with old friends. She was a true “people person” with a gift for conversation and a dear friend to many whose lives she touched in her special way. She was a faithful servant of God, as well as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She will be deeply missed, but we rejoice that her struggle is over and she is now at home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Albert S. Allen; her devoted children, Dr. Lee Ann Allen (Drew) Naylor of Winston-Salem, N.C., Susan Allen McLaughlin of Simpsonville, Dr. Albert S. (Kelli) Allen Jr. who are studying overseas; her special niece, Rebecca Napier Manning of Charlotte. Her precious grandchildren are Tripp and Lane McLaughlin, Kristen and Sara Beth Naylor, Brooks, Kendall, Whitney and Sidney Allen.

She was predeceased by her parents, a brother, James “Jimmy” Lane Napier Jr., and a sister, Mary Wells Napier Floyd.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in Boyce Chapel of First Baptist Church with interment in Elmwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her nephews, Bruce Floyd of Florence, Lane Floyd, Don Earles, Duane Earles, Chuck Earles, all of Columbia, and friend, Craig Fulton of Charlotte.

Memorials may be made to the Sara N. Allen Flower Endowment at First Baptist Church, 1306 Hampton St., Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Shives Funeral Home of Columbia was in charge of the arrangements.
