Harry E. Barrett

Harry Elston Barrett, 87, husband of Mary Lee Hodge Barrett, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born June 15, 1919, in Manning, he was a son of the late Charles Bass and Mary Cannie Lloyd Barrett. He was a retired building contractor and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are two daughters, Carolyn (Michael) Hadder of New Bern, N.C., and Mary Ann (William) Carter of Weaverville, N.C.; two sons, Harry E. (Betty) Barrett Jr. of Clearwater, Fla., and Randolph (Debbie) Barrett of Sumter; a brother, Willis Cecil Barrett of Columbia; three sisters, Margaret Windham of Timmonsville, Mary Emily Tennant of Sumter and Dorothy Coker of Alcolu; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Sammy Lee Barrett; three brothers, Jim, Liston and Sam Barrett; and three sisters, Virginia Street, Louise Barrett and Grace Hodge.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Cottone and the Rev. Dr. Paul M. Sullivan officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Karl Miller, Jim Queen, Hoyt Collins, LeRoy Phillips, Larry Williamson and John Franklin Thames.

Memorials may be made to the Hospitality House of Providence Hospital, 2435 Forest Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29204.

William E. Blackmon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – William Eugene Blackmon, 66, husband of Marlene Ferguson Blackmon, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Born April 18, 1940, in Indian Head, Md., he was a son of the late Worth R. and Louise Richburg Blackmon. He was a retired U.S. Air Force technical sergeant, having served from June 1960 through May 1982, including two tours in Vietnam. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts. Mr. Blackmon sold insurance for various companies after his retirement and was a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Surviving besides his wife of the home are a daughter, Rebecca “Becky” (Brian) Gansle of Carrollton, Texas; three sons, Richard Brian Blackmon of Chevy Chase, Md., William Robert Blackmon and Benjamin Dean Blackmon of Statesboro, Ga.; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Gansle; a stepdaughter, Michelle M. (Rodney) Cline of Advance, N.C.; a stepson, William Martin Moon of Winston-Salem; a step-grandson, Tucker Jacob Cline; a sister, Lillian Barwick of Manning; and a sister-in-law, June B. Blackmon of Greensboro, N.C.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Worth R. and Wilbur A. Blackmon; and two sisters, Margaret B. Morrison and Mary Belle M. Richburg.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.

Charles Lee Jones

Charles Lee Jones, 40, died Feb. 3, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 13, 1967, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Donald Neil and Thelma Wells Jones. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a member of the graduating class of 1986 from Sumter High School. He was employed by Exide Battery.

Survivors include two daughters, Shanelle Green of Georgia and Rockell Isaac of Sumter; one son, Brandon Simmons of Summerton; five sisters, Ruth Jones, Mickey Jones, Louvenra Billie and Rosa McBride, all of Sumter, and Ruby Tindal of Wedgefield; four brothers, Steve (Jennifer) Jones, William Jones, Ronnie Jones and Roy Wells, all of Sumter; three aunts, Bessie Mae (Albert) McKnight of Thomasville, N.C., Shirley Jones and Lillie M. Wells, both of Sumter; one uncle, Dan Wells of Alcolu; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dr. Ella Busby, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Wells Cemetery, Alcolu.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Lee Morris

Lee Morris, 66, husband of Geronia Pugh Morris, died Feb. 7, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born May 17, 1940, in Manning, he was a son of Rosa Lee Servance Morris and the late Willie James Morris. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he became a member of St. John Baptist Church, Silver. He was a devoted fan of the Community All-Star baseball team. He was a retiree, devoting his working career to Georgia-Pacific of Sumter, Sumter Building Co. and the City of Manning.

Survivors besides his mother, Rosa Lee Morris of Silver, include his wife, Geronia P. Morris of the home; two sons, Bernard (Nyree) Morris and Micheal (Casey) Morris of Japan; three daughters, Ernestine Morris, Gretta (Terry Sr.) Johnson and Sonja (Benjamin) Mellerson; three brothers, Willie Morris, Larry Morris and Jackie Morris, all of Manning; five sisters, Mamie Lloyd of Pinewood, Bertha Hardy, Margaret Morris and Brenda Morris, all of Manning, and Eliza Thames of Miami, Fla.; one aunt, Easter Mae Plowden of Jamaica, N.Y.; one uncle, David (Linda) Servance of Philadelphia, Pa.; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Lee Morris.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. C. Richburg officiating, the Rev. Terry R. Johnson Sr. as eulogist, assisting Evangelist Ruth Pugh and the Rev. Henry Pressley.

Burial was in the St. John Baptist Church cemetery.

Raymond I. Spann

Raymond I. Spann, 78, husband of Lelia Jones Spann, died Feb. 2, 2007, at Providence Hospital, Columbia.

Born Aug. 8, 1928, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Bossie Spann and Josephine Robinson Spann. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. He lived in New York for 25 years and worked for Horowitz and Markowitck. He later worked for Campbell Soup and retired after 20 years of service. Upon retiring, he began his lawn care business in Manning and was in full demand. He was a member of Mount Zero Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his stepmother, Carrie Lee Spann of Manning, include one son, Raynard (Ethel) Spann of Manning; and one stepsister, Esther Briggs of Manning.

He was preceded in death by a sibling, Adeline Spann.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry K. Presley officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Terry Lee Strong

Terry Lee Strong, age 63, beloved husband of Kaye Lynn Lucas-Strong, died on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at his residence in Manning.

He was born in Lebanon, Mo., a son of the late Claude Strong and Edna Mae Gosslin Strong. He served in the Navy, was a member of Local Union No. 630 and was a pipe fitter. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, John Drew of Raleigh, N.C., and Josef Drew of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Rhonda Kaye Strong of Orlando, Fla., Katherine Lee Strong of West Palm Beach and Kimberly Briones of Manning; one brother, Dennis Strong of Texas; and four grandchildren, Kristin, Mathew, Miranda and Kaleigh.

A memorial service was held Tuesdsay, Feb. 6, 2007, at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Home Healthcare, 2650-B Hardee Cove, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

George Manning Harrell Sr.

COLUMBIA – George Manning Harrell Sr., 76, widower of Sarah Moye Harrell, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.

Born June 19, 1930, in Florence, he was a son of the late Albert Leslie Harrell, Sr. and the late Grace Parker Harrell. An avid gamecock fan, he attended the University of South Carolina and served in the United States Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War. Mr. Harrell was the co-founder of The Shrimper Restaurants and resided at Lake Marion for over twenty years.

Surviving are daughter Beth (Terry) Austin, daughter, Becky Pintak, son George Manning (Sheila) Harrell Jr., and son, Joe P. Harrell, all of Columbia; sister, Annie Jo Watford of Timmonsville; brothers, Leslie Harrell, Jr. of West Palm Beach, Florida and Donnie Harrell of Trophy Club, Texas. Mr. Harrell is also survived by ten grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Salem United Methodist Church in Timmonsville.

Memorials may be made to the 82nd Airborne Division Association Educational Fund, P. O. Box 65089, Fayetteville, N.C. 28036-5089.

Clyde J. Black Jr.

LAKE WATEREE – Clyde Joseph Black Jr., 80, husband of Mary Ruth Geddings Black, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 at his home in Ridgeway.

Born in Paxville, he was a son of the late Clyde Joseph Black Sr. and the late Vivian Geddings Black.

Mr. Black was a member of First Baptist Church in Bishopville and was the retired manager of Suburban Propane Gas Co. He was a Merchant Marine veteran of World War II. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years of Lake Wateree; a son, Clyde J. “Joe” (Irene) Black of McAllen, Texas; two daughters, Patti (Danny) Weaver of Hartsville and Sharon Stokes of Columbia; two brothers, Jim Black and Marshall Black of Manning; a sister, Betty Geddings of Dalzell; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Bishopville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 927, Bishopville, S.C. 29010 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Larry Staley

PINEWOOD – Larry Staley, 64, entered eternal rest at Tuomey Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, after a prolonged illness.

Born March 30, 1942, in Denmark, he was the son of the late Larkily Staley and Gladys M. Jamison Staley. He was educated in the public schools of Bamberg County. He graduated from Voorhees High School and Junior College in 1958 and later received a degree in agriculture from South Carolina Area Trade School. As a youth, he attended Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lees and Franklin Methodist Church in Denmark. In 1960, he relocated to New York City, where he joined the U.S. Air Force, from which he was honorably discharged in 1963. Upon his discharge, he found employment with the U.S. Postal Service, which he subsequently left to become a member of the New York City Department of Corrections. He retired from the Department of Corrections in 1995, rejoining the Postal Service, until his retirement in 2001. He left New York and relocated to Clarendon County in 2002.

He is survived by his children from his marriage which ended in divorce, Larry Keith (Salena) Staley of New York, Tamara Staley of Maryland and Michael (Stacey) Staley of Maryland. He also leaves to mourn his passing his sister, Zelma Staley Folk of New York; a granddaughter, Charlamange Staley of California; a special friend and companion, Elease DuBose of South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Antioch UME Church, Pinewood.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

J. Richard Perdue

J. Richard Perdue, 78, widower of A. Elaine Perdue, died Friday, January 26, 2007, in Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born February 29, 1928, in Castlewood, Pa., he was a son of the late James and Edna Houk Perdue. He retired from Pennsylvania Power Company after 27 years of service, was past owner of Manning Motel #1, a member of the Lion’s Club, the Clarendon Golf and Country Club, the Gamecock Camping Club, and was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Lee of Manning; four sons, Fred (Cheri) Perdue of Fredericksburg, Va., Gary (Trish) Perdue of Dallas, Texas, Bill (Amelia) Perdue of Johns Island, and Bruce (Ellen) Perdue of Goose Creek; a brother, Don Perdue of New Castle, Pa.; a sister, Edie Timblin of New Castle, Pa.; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and special friend, Bonnie Perdue.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Ed, and Gerald Perdue.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P. O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.
