God made a special visit on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center; He took a special angel home, Mrs. Gladys McKenzie Lee.

Mrs. Lee was born Sept. 22, 1928, on the McKenzie Crossroads of Beulah, now known as Olanta. She was born in the year of the notorious flood, which she talked about often.

She attended the old Board Primary School of Olanta, for only a few years, because she and her siblings helped work the farms to support the family. She was the baby of the family and always bragged that she never had to work too hard because the others looked out for her. She grew up in the white sand hills of Olanta and enjoyed a delightful childhood that she shared with her family many, many times. Every experience had a lesson behind it.

As a young teenager, she met and married Elister Lee from right around the corner of Lynchburg. He became the provider for her and her family for the next 46 years. They anxiously moved to the big city of Sumter in the early 1950s to provide a better life for their family. She was a virtuous, God-fearing, strong, no-nonsense woman. She worked faithfully and diligently along with her husband to provide a secure and loving home for her family and many others.

First, she was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and later joined Salem Baptist Church after moving to Sumter. She firmly believed in supporting the church in whatever way was needed. She loved God, her family and neighbors and provided many hot meals and tidbits of wisdom. She was a great cook; her greatest joy was having all of her family and friends around her as often as possible and feeding them until they could eat no more. Her home was filled of laughter and joy, which meant a great deal to her.

She leaves to cherish her family members who will always keep her in their hearts: Two daughters, Ida Lee Golden of Sumter and Virginia Dell (Lawrence) Gamble of Lynchburg; two sons, Richard (Josephine) Lee and Elister (Sandra) Lee Jr., both of Sumter; the apples of her eyes, four grandchildren, Fredricka (Anthony) Taylor, Richard Alonza Lee Jr., Roderick (Gwen) Muhummed and Allicia Marie Golden; six great-grandchildren, Tylek, Ikell, Amani, Adrianna, Quadashia and Rashidah G.; three daughters-in-law, Ruthie Lee, Lesa Lee and Mary Golden, all of Sumter; one granddaughter-in-law, Stephanie Simon of Columbia; two sons-in-law, Asbury (Joe) McFadden and Alphonso Golden of Sumter; two brothers, Lawrence McKenzie of Olanta and Robert (Helen) Goodman of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Marie Brodie of Newark, N.J., Lottie Bell Quattlebaum and Gayle Goodman of Turbeville; two brothers-in-law, Freddie Goodman of Lake City and Dale Goodman of the home; a special cousin, Lottie Baker of Sumter; special friends, Janie Daniel, Ruth Pringle, Alma Wright, Mattie Bruce, Blondell Golden, Ida McFadden and David Nelson, all of Sumter, and Ruby Chambers of Charlotte, N.C.; heart-bared children whom she loved and cherished as her own, Susan Scarborough, Marilyn LeNeau, Cissy and Quienice Sanders, Irvin China, Cynthia, Latasha and LaToya Richardson, Rhonda Pearson, Angela and Debra Taylor, Brenda Hayes, the Pitts children, Reggie and Michelle Golden, Georgette Guiynard and the Golden boys, Ray and Clarice Golden, Mr. McFadden, Tony, Bubba, Mary Logan, Fannie House, Christine Carmicheal, Nay, Bryd, Alvin Lewis, Calvin Logan and Douglass Taylor; the best caregivers in the world, Pat Reames and Sallie Sumter; special nieces, Vista Wheeler, Anita Bryant, Katie Jean McKenzie, Florence White and Debra Hannah; special nephews, the Rev.
