Sallie Mae H. Brown

Sallie Mae Harrison Brown, 54, widow of Randolph Brown Jr., died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born April 13, 1952, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of Sadie Harrison Rufus and the late Hoover Fullard and stepdaughter of the late Elroy Rufus. She was a graduate of Walker-Gamble High School’s Class of 1972. She was employed as a cosmetic consultant for Private Label Cosmetics Co. She accepted Christ as her savior and joined Inner Court Apostolic Church in 2000. She served as vice president of the usher’s auxiliary and hospitality ministry. She was also head of the kitchen staff and Mother of the Church.

Survivors include her mother, Sadie H. Rufus of Turbeville; three sons, Kalvin (Bernadette Hargrove) Brown of Wilson, N.C., Antonio (India Hannah) Brown and Randy (India Darby) Brown, both of Lake City; one daughter, Yashiema T. (Naikodi Ferguson) Brown of the home; three brothers, Johnnie L. Harrison of Paterson, N.J., William (Crystal) Barnes of Lake City and Alonzo Fullard of Sumter; seven sisters, Bonnie (Eddie) Wilder, Lubertha (Jearl) Harrison, Barbara A. Barnes, Maggie L. Rufus, all of Turbeville, Delores (Charles) Ford of Florence, Doretha Graham of Georgia and Barbara Fulwood of Lynchburg; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006, at Inner Court Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Florence, with Bishop Alfred Smalls, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop B.L. James, Pastor K. Wilder and Pastor J. Fulmore.

Burial was in Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Turbeville.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Trussie J. Baker Sr.

READING, Pa. – Trussie Jethro Baker Sr., 56, husband of Caroline G. Baker, died Nov. 29, 2006, at St. Joseph Medical Center, Reading.

Born June 26, 1950, in New Zion, he was a son of the late Hardy Timothy Baker and the late Inez Foster Baker. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon School District 3 and graduated from Walker-Gamble High School in New Zion.

In Bridgeport, Conn., he was a member of Walters Memorial AME Zion Church and was employed with Sears Roebuck & Co. and Burns Detective Agency. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1970 and deployed to Vietnam as a Specialist 4 in Troop 67B20 as an aircraft mechanic. After his tour of duty, he relocated back to Bridgeport and attended Housatonic Community College. In 1975, he moved to Reading and joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church. He was chairman of the deacon board, organized St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church youth department and served as a trustee.

He attended Reading Community College and obtained an associate’s degree in accounting. He furthered his education by attending North Hampton College and earned a degree in mortuary science. He was the owner of T.J. Baker Funeral Home Inc. in Reading. He was involved in many organizations, socially, politically, economically and professionally.

Survivors besides his wife, Caroline G. Baker of the home, include three sons, Kenneth D. (Elizabeth) Baker of Bridgeport, Jon Patrick and Trussie Baker Jr., both of Reading; two daughters, Kristen Elizabeth “Beth” of the home and Tameika Baker of Rhode Island; five brothers, Frank (Nancy) Foster of Chesterfield, Lowell (Deborah) Baker, Joseph (Sarah) Baker and Terry (Janice) Baker, all of Manning, and Therion (Mary) Baker of Reading; five sisters, Dorothy Gamble of Port Charlotte, Fla., Minister Ida Baker of Bridgeport, Francis Fleming and Alice (Stanley) DuRant, both of Manning, and Rosa Lee (Charlie) Gamble of New Zion; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Reading.

Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reading.

David M. Wells

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – David McKinley Wells, 46, died Nov. 24, 2006, at his residence in King of Prussia, Pa.

He was a son of David Wells Jr. and Malvenia Harrison Wells. He accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Mount Nebo Baptist, serving in youth and young adult choirs. Later he joined Westminister Presbyterian Church, serving as a member of Spiritual Ensemble and musician when needed. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He attended the University of South Carolina and Allen University. He was employed by the American Cancer Society and the PNC Bank of Pennsylvania.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Alcolu, with the Rev. Dr. Ella F. Busby officiating, assisting the Revs. Dennis Brock, Jonathan Anderson and Alonza Washington.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ola Spigner

Ola Tindal Hodge Spigner, 93, widow of Thomas Belton Spigner, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, at National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born Oct. 19, 1913, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late James Burrell Tindal and the late Emma Evans Tindal. She was first married to the late William Mills Hodge. She was a retired dietitian at Clarendon Memorial Hospital; a volunteer for Hospice and Meals on Wheels; a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Williams-Burgess Post No. 68; a longtime employee of D.W. Alderman and Sons Lumber Co.; a member of the VFW; and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu. Mrs. Spigner was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, and possibly one of the last living in South Carolina. She was a member of numerous civic and charitable organizations, where she formerly held various offices.

Surviving are two sons, Ray Hodge of Alcolu and Mills Hodge of West End, N.C.; a daughter, Jewell Spigner Brown of Alcolu; 17 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jack Hodge; stepsons, Clifton Spigner, Harold Spigner, and Larry Spigner; and a stepdaughter, Janice Fincher.

The family wishes to thank the staff of National Healthcare of Sumter for their many kindnesses and loving care.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, in Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu with the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Alderman and the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim Pruett, Chris Hodge, Len Brown, Cal Blair, Bill Hodge, and Nick Hodge.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, P.O. Box 307, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

Jeuil M. Richbourg

Jeuil Maes Richbourg, 86, widower of Nadine Richburg Richbourg, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, in Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

Born June 6, 1920, in the Foreston community of Manning, he was a son of the late George Edward Richbourg and the late Nonie Ethel Lowder Richbourg.

He was a United States Army Veteran of WWII, a retired auto mechanic from Mitchell Motors, a member of Manning First Baptist Church, American Legion Williams-Burgess Post 68, VFW and DAV life member.

Surviving are a son, Gerald (Kathy) Richbourg of Manning; a daughter; Linda (Jerry) Strickland of Manning; two sisters, Teresia Jones of Marion, N.C., and Regina Alsbrooks of Fingerville; a brother, W.O. Richbourg of Moncks Corner; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Richburg; two brothers, Earl Richbourg and Edward Richbourg; and a sister, Albertha Dennis.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Tracy D. Benenhaley officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Annie P. Nelson

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Annie Montgomery Pearson Nelson, 82, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at her residence.

Born May 5, 1924, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Enoch Montgomery and Emmie Montgomery. She was first married to the late Leroy Pearson Sr. and then to the late Bubba Nelson.

Survivors include a son, Leroy “Roy” Pearson and his wife, Myra, of Summerton.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, at Living Stone Baptist Church in Brooklyn.

Bristow Johnson Sr.

Bristow Johnson Sr., 87, of Sumter, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, at Sumter Rehabilitation Center.

Born on Oct. 9, 1919, in the Wedgefield community of Sumter County, he was the son of the late Abraham and Binah Choice Johnson and the widower of Carolyn Colclough Johnson. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. A master carpenter by trade, he retired from the Marion Emerson and Son Construction Co.

In his youth, he began his Christian journey and joined Orange Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church. Upon moving to Sumter, he joined Saint Mark United Methodist Church. He was very active in the life of the church and the community. Prior to his declining health, he was a lead singer with the Inspirational Choir and the Men of Faith Choir, a member of the United Methodist Men, and a devoted trustee. He enjoyed Sunday school and fellowship with the Golden Age Ministry. His longevity and faithful service gained him the honor of being named, “Father of Saint Mark.” He was also a member of the Male Starlight Singers.

His legacy of faith, hope, and love will be cherished by his five daughters, Marie (Leroy) Carolina of Philadelphia, Pa., Earline Holland and Mary Hunter, both of Sumter, Marjorie Johnson of Baltimore, Md., and Shirley (the Rev. James “JC”) Lane of Summerville; six sons, Joseph (Cleo) Johnson, Perry Johnson, George (Carolyn) Johnson, Kirk (Sharon) Johnson, Daniel (Elizabeth Abrams) Johnson, and Darrell Johnson, all of Sumter; four sisters, Carrie (Aaron) Sanders, Nell (Roger) Yates, Sarah Jane (John) Chisolm, all of Baltimore, Md., and Wilhelmina Breckinridge of Sumter; three brothers, George (Adeline) Johnson of Bronx, N.Y., Abraham (Delores) Johnson of Sumter, and William (Octavia) Johnson of Silver; 35 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Ann Johnson Brown of Summerton and Amy Johnson of Baltimore; a devoted friend, Robertha Taylor of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, three sons, two sisters, two brothers, one grandson, one great-granddaughter, one daughter-in-law and one son-in-law.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Sumter, with the Rev. Telley Gadson, pastor.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

William J. Buddin Jr.

William James “Bill” Buddin Jr., 79, widower of Charlene Rooney Buddin, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at his home in Manning.

Born April 10, 1927, in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late William James “Jim” Buddin Sr. and the late Mary Lou Boyd Buddin. He was a U.S. Air Force retired master sergeant, having served in Vietnam and during the Korean War. He was founder of the family business, Clarendon Exterminating; a member of Manning United Methodist Church; a Mason; a member of American Legion Williams-Burgess Post No. 68; and the VFW. He loved to golf and was a member of Clarendon Golf and Country Club, Pee Dee Seniors, Tri-County Seniors and the Three County Seniors, having served in many different capacities with these golf associations. Bill was an avid baseball fan.

Surviving are two sons, Jake (Elaine) Buddin and Chuck (Pam) Buddin of Manning; two daughters, Pam Currie of Manning and Debbie (Reid) Mattison of Zionsville, Ind.; two sisters, Jewel (Mack) Johnson of Sumter and Lois Crolley of York; grandchildren, Claire and Clark Mattison, Caroline Buddin, Justin Currie, Renny and H.B. Buddin; and a host of nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil Buddin and Thomas Buddin; and four sisters, Clarice Duke, Olive Joye, Bille Epps and Nelle Cantey.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, in the Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Debra Quilling and the Rev. Tim Rogers officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Ed Buddin, Jimmy Joye, Billy Carter, Glen Carter, Keith Carter, Mitchell Gardner, Bon Gardner and Larry Johnson.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church Capital Campaign Fund, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Brian E. Richburg

Brian Everett Richburg, 34, son of Mitchell Erwin and Betty Lou Brock Richburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, in Charleston.

Born March 2, 1972, in Sumter, he was a welder and a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Davis Station.

Surviving besides his parents of Davis Station are three brothers, Mitchell E. (Gayle) Richburg Jr. of Sumter, Eugene Brock (Sirgley) Richburg of Manning, and Allan Craig (Tracey) Richburg of Davis Station; five nieces, Morgan, Dixie, Lib, Leanna and Nina Richburg; and a special friend, Candace Wellborn.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. DeVere Williams and the Rev. Dr. George Gain officiating.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Gladys B. Griffin, 1372 White Oak Drive, Manning, S.C. 29102.
