John H. McDuffie

John Henry McDuffie, 49, died Nov. 9, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 9, 1957, in Manning, he was a son of the late Deacon Moses McDuffie and Sarah Hilton McDuffie. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. During his youth, he attended Mount Zero Baptist Church and Church of God by Faith, Davis Station. He later attended Greater St. Mark Nondenominational Church, Alcolu.

Survivors include one son, Jonathan (Erica) McDuffie of Baltimore, Md.; one daughter, Lakisha (James) McDuffie of Portsmouth, Va.; six brothers, the Rev. Richmond (Lila) McDuffie, Moses McDuffie Jr. and Nathaniel McDuffie, all of Manning, Bishop (Patricia) McDuffie of Fayetteville, N.C., Leon (Kate) McDuffie of Sumter and Ulyssess (Beverly) Conyers of Columbia; three sisters, Eva (George) Spry and Hennie McDuffie, both of Manning, and Beulah Gaillard of Pineville; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Lee James McDuffie.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at Greater St. Mark Nondenominational Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Northern Miller, Elder Morant, Elder J. Langrell and Co-Pastor Dorothy Miller.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

A. Kenneth Holladay

Archie Kenneth Holladay, 85, widower of Nellie Thomas Holladay, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Feb. 26, 1921, in Manning, he was a son of the late William Henry and Janie Tobias Holladay. He was a retired electrician, plumber and farmer. Mr. Holladay attended electrical school in Chicago and was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran.

Surviving are two daughters, Jan Holladay of Manning and Penny (Dave) George of Cocoa, Fla.; a son, Ken (Gloria) Holladay of Manning; a brother, Lionel Holladay Sr. of Manning; two sisters, Addie Weisiger of Powhatan, Va., and Dorothy Begley of Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandchildren, Holly and Hunter Holladay; and a step-grandson, Will George.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in Wilson Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Devere Williams officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery with nephews serving as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 415, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Wilson Community Center, 1120 Bancroff Lane, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Eddie L. Butler Jr.

Eddie Leroy Butler Jr., 70, widower of Edith Naomi Brown Butler, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 18, 1936, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Rev. Eddie L. and Abbie J. Witherspoon Butler, Sr.

He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He grew up in the church and served at Enon Baptist Church and New Bethel Baptist Church. He later united with Second Presbyterian Church, where he served in various capacities to include moderator of the Presbyterian Men’s Council, member of the Trustee Board, Usher Board, the sanctuary choir, the male chorus and the PNC Committee. He was a devoted servant to the church and took his roles with pride and diligence. He was a lifelong employee of Georgia Pacific until he retired in 1995.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Butler-Pitts of Sumter; one granddaughter, Kianna Naomi Pitts; two brothers, the Rev. Willie J. (Doris) Butler and Benjamin F. Butler, both of Sumter; one sister, Cynthia Butler-Weeks of Yeadan, Pa.; four aunts, Evola (Thomas) Dukes of Manning, Marie (Thomas) Simmons of Sumter, Ida Bell Butler of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Eddie Bussey of Sumter; two brothers-in-law, Edward (Lois) Brown of Clewiston, Fla., and Robert (Edna) Brown of Columbia; one sister-in-law, Malvina Ramsey of Brooklyn; a special cousin/sister-in-law, Scotty McQuiller of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lillie Mae Butler.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Second Presbyterian Church, 1125 Old Pocalla Road.

Officiating minister was Elder Frances Singleton, Clerk of Session, assisted by Dr. R.F. Bligen Jr., the Rev. Beatha Nelson and the Rev. Emma Thompson.

Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.

Job’s Mortuary of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Bessie B. Pringle

Bessie “Muddy” Baxter Pringle, 79, widow of Ernest Pringle, died Nov. 7, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 27, 1927, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Willie Baxter and Annie Thames Baxter. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church and served on the missionary society, senior and gospel choirs and kitchen committee. She was a member of the Everready gospel choir and a lifetime member of the NAACP. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was employed by the Central Coffee Shop for many years and as a housekeeper for the late George Bagnal.

Survivors include two sons, Harry (Theresa) Pringle and Burdy (Bessie) Pringle, both of Manning; one adopted son, Sgt. Elliott Hardy; five daughters, Idell (Roosevelt) Cubit, Annie (Paul) Cantey of Manning, Norine Pringle of the home, Nora (Jackie) Chandler of Great Lakes, Ill., and Sandra (Willie) Nelson of Hinesville, Ga.; one stepdaughter, Gail Brown of Manning; one granddaughter reared as her own, Debra Pringle of Manning; one brother, Thomas Baxter of Baltimore, Md.; 25 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three adopted daughters, Mary Gerald, Tonya Richburg and Gracie Mack, all of Manning.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Henry K. Pressley, pastor, the Rev. Wayne Blackwell presiding, assisting the Revs. Major Lloyd, Roosevelt McFadden and G.K. Carter.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mary B. Lewis

Mary Bradford Singleton Lewis, 68, wife of Sammie Lewis, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at her residence.

Born Feb. 26, 1937, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late James Bradford Sr. and Susie McBride Bradford Singleton and the stepdaughter of the late Heyward Singleton Sr.

She attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Orange Hill RMUE Church.

Survivors include her loving husband, Sammie Lewis of the home; four sons, James Green of the home, William and Thomas Green, both of Sumter, and Jimmy Green of Columbia; four daughters, Rosa (Matthew) Kelley, Debra (Willie) Green, Mary (Willie) Green and Teresa (Donnie) Green, all of Sumter; five stepchildren, Rodney (Kimberly) and Sammie (Carolyn) Lewis Jr., Melanie (James) Anderson, Michelle Lewis and Zelda (Wendell) Clarby, all of Sumter; one sister, Margaret Muldrow of New York; four stepsisters, Theola Wilson, Helen Prince, Gladys Wells and Amy Wilder; four brothers, Heyward (Sylvia) Singleton, Eugene (Sylvia) Singleton of Sumter, Robert and Clarence Bradford of Florida; two special grandchildren, Laquisha Tamika Green and Michael Tyrell Green, both of Sumter; a host of other grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step great-granchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Brandon Kendell Green; one brother, James Bradford Jr.; one sister, Susan Singleton; her stepmother, Winnie Polite Bradford; a niece, Suzette Lowery; and a nephew, Willie Moses Singleton.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, from Orange Hill RMUE Church, Wedgefield, with the Rev. Thomas Julius, pastor, eulogist.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

Floral bearers were family and friends.

Burial was in the Orange Hill RUME Church Yard Cemetery, Wedgefield.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Ann B. Neal

In His infinite wisdom, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ called Betty Ann Brunson Neal, who departed this life on Sunday evening, April 29, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, after an illness.

She was born Feb. 13, 1948, in Clarendon County, the daughter of the late Sammie L. and Bessie Gibson Brunson. She attended the public schools of Sumter and graduated from Sumter (Lincoln) High School Class of 1966. She also graduated from the University of South Carolina and Central Carolina Technical College. She was united in marraige to Ernest L. Neal on May 7, 1971, and to this union one daughter, Keisha Elizabeth, was added.

She was a member of the Love Center non-denominational church and was a member of the choir. She was also a member of the Starlight Savings Club. Her love for children was exemplified throughout her community. She shared care, attention and unselfish love to each and every child in the community – her home had an open door policy to all the children.

Precious and fond memories will be cherished by a loving husband, Ernest L. Neal of the home; one daughter, Keisha Elizabeth of the home; three granddaughters, Janeisha Brunson, Zaraia Brunson and Janiya Brunson, all of the home; one special daughter, Jarae Boykin of Sumter; one sister, Lilly Blanding of Sumter; a devoted mother-in-law, Mae Neal of Sumter; three brothers-in-law, Cyrus L. Neal Jr. and David J. Blanding, both of Sumter, and Clarence G. Jackson of Aiken; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Neal Jackson of Aiken and Gloria Jean Showers of Myrtle Beach; a special sister-in-kind, Cynthia Boykin of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Special thanks to Joyce White, Leola Mickens, Vivian Holliday and family and all the many other friends and relatives who were so kind and helpful during her illness.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with the Rev. Herman Gibson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lavern McKinney and Brother Clarence Johnson.

Interment followed in Neal Cemetery.

Nieces served as flower bearers and nephews served as pallbearers.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of all arrangements.

George McConico

George “Bobby” McConico, entered eternal rest on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home, Manning.

Born Dec. 8, 1943, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Amelia McConico. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of St. Peter AME Church. Mr. McConico was employed by Sili Yarn in Thomasville, N.C., for many years before moving back home.

He leaves to cherish his memories: two daughters, Christie Gail Brown of Columbia and Lakisha Rochelle McCauley of Thomasville; four sisters, Carolyn Brailsford of Pinewood, Shirley McConico of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Dorothy (Charles) Tindal and Betty and her husband of Summerton; two brothers, Elijah McConico and Junior (Julia) McConico, all of Pinewood; two special cousins, Ernestine (the Rev. Joseph) Stukes and Mary Junious; a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 3, 2007, at St. Peter AME Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. J.D. Seawright officiating.

Burial followed in the Spring Grove Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Michael David Bryant

Michael David “Fuzzy” Bryant, 56, husband of Beverly Gramling Bryant, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Born November 20, 1950 in Clarendon County, SC, he was the son of the late Thomas A. Bryant and the late Iva Nell DuBose Bryant Hodge. He was employed with The Times and Democrat as a pressman.

Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Ivanelle Bryant; three sisters; Virginia Bryant of Neeses, S.C., Mae Pack of Sumter, Johnnie (Tony) Geddings of Sumter and Harriett (William) Locklair of Alcolu; two brothers, Thomas Bryant of Darlington and Dwight Bryant of Highlands, N.C. and a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Pallbearers were Marty Hutto, Dr. Wesley Shuler, Lee Bryant, Russell O’Cain, Jimmy Morris and Jason Gramling.

Honorary pallbearers were Chris Gramling and Charles Garrick.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg.

Burial was in Four Holes Baptist Church Cemetery in Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association; Mid Atlantic Affiliate; P. O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.

Thompson Funeral Home of Orangeburg was in charge of the arrangements.

Cecelia M. Roberts

Cecelia M. “Ceil” Roberts, 81, wife of 61 years to Joe B. Roberts, died Friday, April 27, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer with her family at her side.

Ceil was born Sept. 21, 1925, in Sanford, Fla., and retired to Manning from Highland Hospital (a division of Duke University) in Asheville, N.C. Upon retirement, she and her husband, Joe, traveled the world and enjoyed a wonderful, fruitful partnership. She was a wonderful wife, mother and mother-in-law. She will be missed by friends and family.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning is a daughter, Fran (Robert) Burwell of Greensboro, N.C.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to The Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, S.C., 29605, or to a charity of one’s choice.
