Christine L. Raffield

DALZELL – Graveside services for Christine Lybrand Raffield, widow of John Benjamin Raffield Jr., of Dalzell, were held on Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Tirzah Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Dalzell, with the Revs. Jody P. Foster and Eugene Franklin officiating.

Mrs. Raffield, 96, died Sunday, April 22, 2007.

Born April 5, 1911, in Swansea, she was a daughter of the late Compton K. Lybrand and the late Callie Busbee Lybrand. She was a graduate of Wagener High School and attended Chicora College for Women in Columbia. She retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission after more than 30 years, serving in her later years as assistant manager of the Sumter office. A member of Tirzah Presbyterian Church since shortly after her move to Dalzell in 1930, she was active in the women of the church.

She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years; two brothers, W.A. Lybrand of Wagener and Dorcey Lybrand of Aiken; a nephew, John Allen Lybrand of Orangeburg; and a daughter-in-law, Patsy Bullock Raffield of Dalzell.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Raffield of Dalzell; a son, John B. (Kay) Raffield III of Woodrow; grandchildren, John B. Raffield IV of Dalzell, Christopher Bullock (Lisa) Raffield of Sumter, Charles Joseph (Emily) Davis Jr. of Columbia, and Kathleen Cain Davis (Joseph) Durant of Sumter; a niece, Christina “Tina” Lybrand of Mount Pleasant; a sister-in-law, Bert Wactor of Elloree; and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Tirzah Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Mary Bradham, 1371 Rembert Church Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Robert C. Bradford

Robert Crockett “Bob” Bradford, 64, died Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Jay Gardner, in Summerton.

Born Aug. 15, 1942, in Huntsville, Ala., he was a son of the late Raymond and Mary Jane Collins Bradford. He was a retired meat cutter, an Air Force veteran and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Kim (Jay) Gardner of Summerton; two sons, Scott (Tami) Bradford of Sumter and Curt (Ann) Bradford of Alexandria, Va.; one brother, Raymond R. (Jeanette) Bradford of Granger, Ind.; four sisters, Jane McKenna of Osceola, Ind., Sue (Jack) Coultas of Elkhart, Ind., Linda (Bryce) Kemper of Osceola and Brenda (Gene) Kemper of Denmark.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 28, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating.

Burial was held privately.

Memorials may be made to Advantage Hospice, 259 A Broad St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Barbara F. Truesdell

WESTVILLE – Barbara Faulkenberry Truesdell, 71, died Saturday, April 21, 2007.

Born in Westville, she was the daughter of the late David F. “Finn” and Alice Catoe Faulkenberry.

Mrs. Truesdell was a Realtor and owner of Barbara Truesdell Realty; former member and women’s chairman of the S.C. Farm Bureau; former chairman of the Cassatt Water Board; a former member and chaplain of the Kershaw County School Board; a former member of the S.C. School Board Association; former member of All State School Board; past president of the Kershaw County Board of Realtors; former member of the Commission for Central Carolina Technical College; member of Bethany Baptist Church; former Sunday school teacher of the Ruth Truesdell Bible Class; and past director of Bethany Baptist Senior Citizens Group.

Surviving are her husband, Gerald W. Truesdell Sr. of Westville; daughter, Kay T. Young of Manning; son, Gerald W. (Crystal) Truesdell Jr. of Westville; son-in-law, Stephen A. Sims Sr. of Westville, grandchildren, Sonya S. (Eddy) Payne and Stephen A. (Staci) Sims Jr., both of Westville, Heather, Ivy and Holly Young and Brittany and Jeremy Truesdell; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Truesdell was predeceased by a daughter, Debra T. Sims, and brothers, Thomas Faulkenberry and David Faulkenberry.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 23, 2007 at Bethany Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Craigan Blackenship officiated.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church, Family Life Center Fund, P.O. Box 488, Westville, S.C. 29175.

Jane G. Brewer

Jane Griffith Brewer, 46, wife of Benjamin Oliver Brewer, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 11, 1960, in Richland, Va., she was a daughter of Betty Taylor Smith and the late Thurman Smith.

She was co-owner of Brewer’s Jewelry Repair, and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband and mother, both of Manning; a daughter, Alison (T.J.) Ridgeway of Manning; three brothers, Tony Smith of Evansville, Ind., Benny Smith of Manning and Ted Griffith of Conway; and a granddaughter, Hanna Grace Ridgeway.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Jones, John Hall and Mark Bishop officiating.

Burial followed in Home Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ray Morris, Chuck Goff, Ronnie Peterson, Grant Hughes, Matt Taylor and Dean Peat.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Home Branch Baptist Church and Cross Roads Fellowship Church.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1794 Old Georgetown Road, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

James R. Pearson

James Robert Pearson, 55, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

He was born July 27, 1951, in Clarendon County, a son of the late Isaac Pearson and Mary Pearson.

His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and at an early age he joined Triumph The Church and Kingdom of God in Christ. He was employed and worked faithfully at the Rickenbaker Gin and with several other jobs as a machine operator.

Survivors include Zolia Johnson of the home; three brothers, the Rev. Wendell (Mary) Pearson of Bloomville; Will Pearson of Manning and Willie Pearson of Manning; five sisters, Willie Mae Johnson of Bloomville, Rosa (Albert) Dow of Manning, Corine Beltson of Whiteville, N.C., Mary (Alphona) Dow of Manning and Ann (Sonny) Dingle of Bloomville.

Also surviving are her extended family, Jimmie (Eva) Johnson of Englewood, N.Y., Francina J. (Benjamin) Lemon of Baltimore, Patrick N. (Jervine) Johnson of Sanford, Fla., and Timothy R. (Gail) Johnson of Baltimore. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at Triumph The Church and Kingdom of God in Christ, Davis Station. Officiating was the Rev. County Prince Sampson Pearson, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Ronnie Brown and Elder Hattie Weathers.

Burial was in Carolina Johnson Cemetery, Davis Station.

Fleming and Delaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Jewell Lena B. Huth

LYNCHBURG – Jewell Lena Bell Huth, age 81, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at a Florence hospital after a short illness.

Born in Newport News, Va., she was a daughter of the late Robert Samuel Bell and Frieda G. Ehoff Bell. She was a renowned seamstress; owner and operator of Gems by Jewell Dress Shop; a former member of the Sumter Crafters Guild; and was a member of Faith Bible Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Samuel Bell Jr. and Walter Bell; and an infant grandson.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. F.L. Huth Jr.; two daughters, Dr. Joyce Frieda (Dr. Jamie) Munro of Wayne, Pa., and Grace Adelia (Dr. Kevin) Suiter of Bradley, W.Va.; a son, Fred L. (Connie) Huth III of Turbeville; a sister, Lillian Roy of Mitchellville, Md.; three grandchildren, Freddie L. (Shana) Huth, Carey I. (Charrish) Huth and Terry C. (Jessica) Huth; five great-grandchildren, McKayla, Shelley, Jacob, Conor and Eden Huth.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, in the Chapel of Floyd Funeral Home.

Burial followed at Faith Bible Church cemetery on the Narrow Paved Road in Sumter County.

Memorials may be made to the Faith Bible Church Mission Fund, 1640 Trinity Road, Lynchburg, S.C. 29080.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Myrtle Faye Kennedy

SANTEE – Myrtle Faye Kennedy, 62, widow of Don Lee Kennedy, died Monday, February 26, 2007, in The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Born March 22, 1944, in Pikeville, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Dewey and Angie Wolford Kinney. She was a member of Lakeside Outreach Ministries.

Surviving are a son, Donald (Valarie) Kennedy of Santee; daughter, Angie Kennedy of Santee; two sisters, Mary Graham of Valdosta, Ga. and Bobbie L. Lambert of Crossville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Jessica, Kenny, Kevin and J. D. Kennedy; four great grandchildren, Daniel Eason, and James, Trenton and Ethan Kennedy.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at Lakeside Outreach Ministries, with the Rev. Kenny Griffin officiating.

Memorials may be made to Lakeside Outreach Ministries Building Fund, 4350 Nelson’s Ferry Road, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Sarah I. Johnson

PINEWOOD – Sarah I. Johnson died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at Hopewell Nursing Home in Sumter.

Born Oct. 30, 1945, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Simon Johnson and Laura Richardson Johnson. She was reared in a Christian home and became a member of Antioch AME Church at an early age. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County and continued her studies at Central Carolina Technical College, Sumter, where she majored in accounting.

In 1960, she moved to New York, where she pursued a career as an electronics technician. She continued her Christian education at Allen AME Church, where she served diligently until she returned to Rimini in 1984. Upon moving back to Rimini, she reinstated her membership with Antioch AME Church and served as a member of the usher board and the kitchen committee.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Cleo Johnson Mouzon, and her companion, Johnnie Lee Parker.

She leaves to cherish her fond and loving memories a devoted and loving daughter, Cassandra Amber Johnson of the home; two stepsons, Joshua Parker of Boston, Mass., and Daniel Parker of Bronx, N.Y.; one brother, Lacy Williams of Washington, D.C.; one brother-in-law, Artis Mouzon of Queens, N.Y.; a loving caregiver, Valuare Charles of Pinewood; one aunt, Sarah Canty of Queens; six goddaughters; two godsons; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Antioch AME Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. Georgeann Pringle, pastor, assisting the Revs. Melissa Green, Saymon James and Richard James.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Richard M. Gibson

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Richard Merritt “Dick” Gibson, 61, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, March 23, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 14, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio, a son of Merritt Gibson and the late Helen Hutchison Gibson. Richard was a graduate of the University of Toledo with a bachelor of arts in history, political science and psychology. He received a Master of Public Administration degree from Ohio State University and doctorate in history at Ohio State University. He was a research fellow in public administration at Ohio State University; instructor in history at Ohio State University; and a registrar at the School of Design at Toledo Museum of Art. Richard was employed with the Social Security Administration as a trainer and claims representative in Winston-Salem. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where he headed the Archives and History Department. He also served in the Chancel Choir; as a member of church council; former member of evangelism mission; Church Life Council; chair of singles ministry; facilitator in Disciple and Christian Believer studies; and lay coordinator of information/security services. He was a volunteer mentor/foster parent for United Methodist Children’s Home.

Surviving are his father, Merritt Gibson of Sumter, formerly of Manning; a special friend, Darlene Kennedy, and her family; three cousins, Charles and Sharon Cramer of Manning, Dan and Sharon Hutchison of Vancouver, Wash.; and Martin R. Hutchison of Hemet, Calif.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael Brown and the Rev. Jack Yarbrough officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Centenary United Methodist Church “Archives and History Department,” P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27102, or the charity of one’s choice.

J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Wallburg Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
