Claudius D. Walker

On Saturday, March 31, 2007, Claudius D. Walker died in Bowie, Md.

Born in Manning on April 26, 1931, he was a son of the late Cohen Walker and Edelle Miller-Walker. He was the husband of Yvonne K. Walker; father of Claudette Walker, Michelle Walker-Malloy and Nicole Walker (children of former wife, Francis Walker); and stepfather of Gregory and Guy Brown.

Claudius acquired his early education in Manning and earned a degree in chemistry from Tuskegee Institute. He received his second lieutenant commission through ROTC in the U.S. Air Force and, after graduation, became a member of the 59th Fighter Squadron. He also earned his master’s degree from the University of the District of Columbia. Active in his religious commitment, he was an elder and lay minister at Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Narcissus Walker-Spry; and one brother, Milton Walker.

In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his sisters, Mary Ida Stephens of Atlanta, Ga., Persephone (Isadore) Powell of Severn, Md., Ruth Ola Neal of Columbus, Ohio, and Willian Walker of Manning; and brothers, Jerome Walker of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Edwin Walker of Charleston.

The funeral was held on April 7, 2007, at Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C.

Willie Roberts

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sgt. First Class Willie Rocky Roberts, 35, husband of Keisha Crumpton Roberts, died April 29, 2007, at Army Hospital, Colorado Springs.

Born Oct. 25, 1971, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a son of Mitchell “Buck” Roberts and Ester Pearson Roberts. He received his education in the public schools of Philadelphia and graduated from Oliny High School. After graduation, he was employed by the city of Philadelphia as a junior policeman. Later he joined the U.S. Army on Aug. 24, 1996. He received the following medals: Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Survivors include his wife, Keisha Crumpton Roberts of the home; father and mother, Mitchell “Buck” Roberts and Ester Pearson Roberts, both of Manning; three sons, Joseph, Justin and Cameron Roberts of the home; two brothers, Michael (Keisha) Roberts of Philadelphia and Robert Pearson of Manning; and one sister, Linda Roberts of Philadelphia.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, in Manning, with the Rev. Eddie Lesaine, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Spring Hill AME Church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Albert Wright

Charles Albert Wright, 55, husband of Julie McDaniel Wright, died Sunday, May 20, 2007 at his home.

Born in Dover, New Jersey, he was a son of Frances “Diane” Brouillard Wright and the late Norman “Jake” Wright.

Mr. Wright was of the Baptist faith and was formerly employed by the Tuomey Healthcare System as a transporter with guest services. Charles had 12 years of service with Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning as an orderly and was a former volunteer firefighter.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his mother of New Jersey; a son, Jason R. (Evey) Eder; daughters, Samantha (Grant) Hughes and Heather (Rick) Browder, all of Manning; step-daughters, Allison McCoy, Laura McCoy and Marian Newman all of Sumter; three brothers, Norman Wright, Blair Wright and Jake Wright all of New Jersey; a sister, Darlene McGivern of Maryland; a mother-in-law, Nell McDaniel of Sumter; and 11 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to Tuomey Hospice, 115 N. Sumter St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Merle C. Blend Jr.

Merle Craig Blend Jr., 70, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at his home in Summerton.

Born Oct. 6, 1936, in West Homestead, Pa., he was the son of the late Merle Craig Blend Sr. and the late Anna May Gessner Blend. He moved to Summerton in 1949 with his parents, where they built the Fort Watson Motel, which he owned and operated until 1985. He was formerly employed at Horne Motors in Orangeburg, and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Vance.

Surviving are a son, Merle “Craig” (Lisa) Blend III of Manning; two daughters, Barbara (John) Wise of Columbia and Chris (Joey) Smoak of Pinewood; and four grandchildren, Chase Smoak, Andrew Smoak, Paige Blend and Sam Blend.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 18, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Barwick officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ted Caddell, Timmy Galloway, Gregg Hemingway, John Humphrey, Ronnie Miller and Chase Smoak.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Damon J. Davis

MARIETTA, Ga. – Damon J. Davis, 32, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, in Marietta.

Born May 12, 1975, in Jackson, Miss., he was a son of Carrie Dukes Davis Stewart and the late Willie J. Davis and stepson of the late Odie C. Stewart. He was educated in the public schools of many states and graduated from Leesville High School, La., and furthered his education at Grambling State University. He was co-owner of Diamond Customs of Marietta. At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined Mulberry Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Carrie Dukes Davis Stewart of Manning; grandmother, Vernice Dukes of Manning; two daughters, Shaniyah and Akoria Davis of Atlanta, Ga.; five uncles, Julius (Josephine) Dukes Jr., Horton (Mamie) Davis, the Rev. Sam (Elizabeth) Miller and Levy Young, all of Manning, and Johnnie Lee Davis of Sumter; and six aunts, Louvenia (Ingram) Brunson, Mary Ann King and Sandra Evans, all of Manning, Virginia Julius of Baltimore, Md., Shirley Hunt of Fayetteville, N.C., and Mary Alice (James) McClain of Waxhaw, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willie J. Davis; stepfather, Odie C. Stewart; and grandparents, Julius Dukes Sr. and Horton Sr. and Josephine Davis.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Reeseville AME Church, in Alcolu, with the Rev. Marie Harvin, pastor, officiating, assisted by Evangelist Ruth Ceasar and the Rev. Gerald Tomlin.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Virginia Rosalie McNally

Virginia Rosalie “Ginny” McNally, age 83, died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home in Manning.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on February 5, 1924, Ginny lived in the Philadelphia area for over 50 years before moving to Summerton, and was a daughter of the late Frank and Eleanor M. J. Auckland. She worked at Dodge Steel and other places in Philadelphia, and retired from Moll Advertising Agency in Abingdon, Pa., where she was secretary of the company. She joined the U. S. Navy during WWII and served as secretary to an admiral. She was a member of Somerton United Methodist Church in Philadelphia and later of Summerton United Methodist Church in Summerton. She was an officer of the Alumni Association of Lower Moreland High School, Class of 1941, a bowler, an avid square dancer, and a community volunteer, receiving the State of South Carolina Tutor of the Year Award, where she served from 1986 to 2004 as a volunteer literacy tutor and being honored for 27 years of service to the Windsor Manor Nursing Home. She also collaborated with others to establish and run Summerton Quality of Life, an outreach program to folks in need.

Surviving are sisters, Ellen Brous of Bristol, Phebe Ofterdinger of Atlanta, GA, Gloria Kraus of Norristown, and E. Jeanne Horn of Bensalem; also by step-children, Lynn Barber of New York, John McNally of Churchville, James McNally of Pa., Dana McNally of Conn., Larry McNally of State College, Marjorie McNally of Florida; several step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by beloved husbands, William Bradbury and John McNally; and a brother, Richard Auckland.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, May 17, 2007, at Summerton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bob Allen officiating.

Memorials may be made to Somerton United Methodist Church in Pa., or to Summerton United Methodist Church, 2 Briggs Avenue, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

James P. Way

James P. Way, 88, husband of 66 years to Margaret Chewning Way, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Cameron, he was a son of the late Rueben H. Way and the late Lurline Kimmerline Way. He was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church and the Woodmen of the World. He was a retired builder and master carpenter.

Survivors include his wife of Summerton; two daughters, Beverly W. Morris of Sumter and Betty Lynn (Richard) Bradford of Homerville, Ga.; a son, James P. “Buddy” (Susie) Way of Pinewood; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, R.H. Way of Summerton; and two sisters, Lillian Bacotte of North Santee and Jeanette Carn of St. George.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 23, 2007, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Johnny Morris, Chad Morris, O’Shea Morris, Richard Koontz, Will Therrell and Whitney Ray.

Nephews served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

William C. Osborne Sr.

William Clyde Osborne Sr., 67, husband of Christine Bodiford Osborne, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Dec. 25, 1939, in New Zion, he was a son of the late Marvin C. Osborne Sr. and the late Alma Benton Osborne. He was a retired farmer and car salesman and a member of Union Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his wife of New Zion are a son, William Clyde “Billy” (April) Osborne Jr. of Lake City; three daughters, Debbie (Dennis) Roland of Leesburg, Ga., Cindy Rhame of Columbia and Adell (Glen) Barfield of Lake City; two brothers, Glen Osborne and M.C. Osborne Jr., both of Columbia; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, in New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. L.J. Shuman officiating.

Memorials may be made to Union Baptist Church in New Zion.

Mary Ellen Roberts Dennis

Mary Ellen Roberts Dennis, 93, widow of the late Felix Walker Dennis, died on Sunday, August 5, 2007 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

She was born Feb.13, 1914 at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, the daughter of the late William Tillman Roberts (of Buffalo community in Kershaw County) and the late Mary Emma Ellen Phillips (of Bonneau in Berkley County).

Mrs. Dennis was a member of the Home Demonstrating Club of Dentsville, S.C., Santee Baptist Church and a lifetime member of DAV Manning Post. She was co-owner and operator of Dennis’s Grocery Store and Gas Stations; Dennis Auto Repairs, Auto Body and Upholstery Shop; Dennis Timber and Pulpwood Company; Mary’s Diner and vice president of KWD Enterprises. She enjoyed her flower garden and organic gardening.

Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Helen Anginette (John Dexter, Jr.) Tabor of Blythewood and Edith “Edee’” Elinor Tabor Bryant (Capt. Randolph Jackson “Jack”) Matthews of Manning and one son, Kenneth William Dennis, of Cayce. Also surviving are nieces Vivian R. Johnson of West Columbia and Vada R. Arant of Lugoff, nephew William Maxie Roberts of West Columbia, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren, numerous great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews and their families.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Shelley Lee Roberts and William Wilson Roberts; a nephew, Harold Edward Roberts I; her sons-in-law Melvin Julian Lee Tabor and Robert “Tony” Bryant; a step-great grandson, David Flowers; and her faithful dog, Lucy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. R. Kevin Johnson and Rev. Otis Lee, officiating.

Interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers were Ronald “Ronny” Melvin Tabor, Donald “Donny” Lee Tabor, John Baxter Tabor III, Daniel “Danny” Walker Tabor Sr., Daniel Tabor Jr., Ryan Flowers, Ryan Matthews John Baxter Tabor IV.

Honorary pallbearers were Frank Allen, Bernard Arant, Charles “Charlie” Dennis, Michael J. Dennis, Joseph B. “Duck” Johnson, Randolph Jackson “Jack” Matthews, Jr. William Maxie Roberts, Donald Sapp, Benjamin “Ben” Walker Tabor, and Brandon Michael Tabor.

Flower bearers were Sharon T. Sapp, Melissa Sapp, Gail Ann T. Flowers, Ashley Tabor, Tonya Nicole Tabor, Terri Tabor and Kimberly “Kim” V. Matthews and Kayla S. Matthews.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Tuomey Hospice.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to Dr. George Harrison, the ER, ICU and Third Floor medical staff at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Tuomey Hospice volunteer Mrs. Dorothy Richburg, Reverend Jimmy Eldreth, the pastor of Santee Baptist Church; Mrs. Dennis’ extended family (the residents) and some of the staff members who work at Lake Marion Nursing Facility who have given good care and have shown love, compassion and kindness the last 10-and-a-half years.

Greenlawn Funeral Home of Columbia was in charge of the arrangements.
