Rebecca W. Colclough
Rebecca Washington Colclough, 89, widow of Major Colclough, died Sunday, October 21, 2001, at her home.

Born Sept. 23, 1912, in the Westminister community, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Mary Emma Tomlin Colclough.

She attended the public schools of Clarendon County, Allen University in Columbia and Durham Beauty of Durham, N.C. She joined Westminister Presbyterian Church and served on the senior choir and the deacon board. She retired from Meyer’s Manufacturing of Norfolk, Conn.

Survivors include a son, Robert Colclough of Alcolu; a daughter, Mary Emma Theus of Bronx, N.Y.; a foster daughter, Mary Clark of Manhattan, N.Y.; a granddaughter she reared as her own, Betty Blackwell of the home; a sister, Willie Jane Wacker of Deland, Fla.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gertrude Oliver.

Services were 11 a.m. Saturday at Westminister Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Jones Jr. officiating and Dr. Franklin D. Colclough assisting.

Burial followed in Westminister Cemetery.

George C. Aycock
George Calhoun Aycock, 79, husband of Ruth Griffin Aycock, died Sunday, October 21, 2001, at Covenant Place.

Born in Ninety Six, he was the son of the late George Jones and Anna Calhoun Aycock.

He graduated from Pinewood High School, where he received the following honors: winner of Coach’s Trophy, editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and class annual, president of the senior class, captain of the football team and co-captain of the baseball team. He went on to letter in baseball at the University of South Carolina, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in business administration. He joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II and served in the Southwest Pacific. He served as a Postmaster for more than 30 years and was selected Postmaster of the Year by the National League of Postmasters, where he also served as state president.

After retiring as Manning Postmaster in 1979, he served as a judge from 1980-1987. He was a charter member of the Pinewood American Legion Post No. 117 for 54 years and served in several official capacities. In January 1995, he was inducted into the Sumter County Athletic Hall of Fame and was a member of the Carolina Gamecock Club for 55 years.

He was a lifelong member of Pinewood United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school superintendent, trustee, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher and was president of the Men’s Club. After moving to Sumter, he became a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors besides his wife, include a son, Dr. George Calhoun Aycock Jr. of Greenville, Tenn.; two daughters, Laura Aycock Morris and her husband, Steven, and Libby Aycock of Sumter; two sisters, Sara Aycock Suttler of Clovis, Calif., and Charlene Aycock Morris and her husband, Jim, of Columbia; two grandsons, Wayne Morris of Clemson and Trey Aycock of Columbia; three granddaughters, Anna Morris Jones and her husband, Walker Jones Jr., of Sumter, Stephanie Morris of Greenville and Ashley Aycock of Summerton; and a great-grandson, Walker Jones III of Sumter.

Services were 3 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Drs. Robert Stillwell and Thomas Painter officiating. Burial followed in the Pinewood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pinewood United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Desmond A. Sweat

Desmond Antion Sweat, 10, died Saturday, October 19, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Aug. 26, 1992, in Columbia, he was the son of Marie Sweat and Willie Cohen. He was a student at Fairfield Primary in Winnsboro from kindergarten through third grade. He attended John P. Thomas Elementary School for one year, where he was a defensive end on the Fairfield County Football Team for the Panthers. He attended Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his mother of Sumter and father of Winnsboro include a maternal grandmother, Jeanette Sweat of Manning; a godmother, Aleatha Ford of Winnsboro; four uncles; and eight aunts.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Brittany Marie Sweat.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Ashley Vaughn, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Eugene Thomas, evangelist Elizabeth Richburg and Prophtess Mumford.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Classmates served as pallbearers and floral bearers.

Iliene B. Rowe

Iliene Bagnal Rowe, 90, widow of Franklin Olin Rowe Sr., died Tuesday, October 22, 2002, in National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born July 25, 1912, in Timmonsville, she was the daughter of the late John Belton Bagnal and the late Maria Harrell Bagnal. She was a 1929 graduate of Sumter High School, where she was in the Glee Club and Orchestra, a graduate of Business School in 1931, and IAS 1962. She was a retired accountant, and became the first licensed female public accountant in Clarendon County on Feb. 9, 1970. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Board, past Trustee, Secretary, Cantey-Lanham Circle 1974 to 1987; a charter member and secretary of Summerton OES #224 from 1955-59; secretary, School of Instruction in Sumter from 1957-58; and Secretary’s Breakfast Association from 1955-59. She was v. pres. 1956, pres. 1957, and historian 1962-present of The Bagnal Clan; historian 1974-present of The Rowe Clan; S.C. Association of Public Accountants 1963 to present, Scholarship Committee 1983-91; Children of the Confederacy 1921, U.D.C. Dick Anderson Chapter DAR, Thomas Sumter’s Home Chapter; charter member and treasurer of Elizabeth Peyre Richardson Manning Chapter DAR; charter member of Clarendon Business and Professional Women’s Club; Clarendon Historical Society; charter member and treasurer of The Willie Dingle Memorial Educational Fund; clerk in Clarendon County’s First Acreage Reduction Office (Now ASCS).

Survivors include a daughter, Helen R. Ellis and husband, Don, of Manning; a son, Franklin Olin Rowe Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Chapin; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Summerton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Carolyn Malphrus and Debra Quilling officiating.

Burial followed in St. Paul Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Cleo L. Ridgeway

Cleo Lightsey Ridgeway, 66, wife of H. Cleveland Ridgeway, died Sunday, October 27, 2002, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born March 1, 1936, in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Herman B. Lightsey Sr. and the late Tinnie Mason Lightsey. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides her husband of Manning include a son, Gary Ridgeway and wife, Sharon, of Manning; a daughter, Kathy Brunson of Alcolu; three brothers, Tommy Lightsey of Allendale, John Gerald Lightsey of San Antonio, Texas and Herman B. Lightsey Jr. of Irmo; a sister, Betty Jane Jeffcoat of Hampton; and three grandchildren, Wesley Brunson, Kelsey Brunson and Carmen Ridgeway.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. George Gain, Fred Treaster and Tommy Conway officiating.

Burial followed in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Wayne Pelfrey, Rick Myers, Ricky Ridgeway, Randy Bullard, Stanley Hodge, Wesley Brunson and Chris Ridgeway.

Memorials may be made to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 415, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Clice Mae C. Davis

Clice Mae Corbett Davis, 64, wife of Richard Marion Davis, died Monday, October 28, 2002, at her home in Summerton.

Born Feb. 3, 1938, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Charles Benjamin “Mood” Corbett and the late Vivian Newman Corbett. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of Summerton; a son, Richard M. “Ricky” Davis Jr. of Manning; a daughter, Linda Davis of Summerton; a sister, Judy Marie Dykes of Statesboro, Ga.; and a grandson, Jerry Lane Coker Jr.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Mood Corbett Jr.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Turner officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Davis, Steve Taylor, Billy Bowers, Ervin Davis, Terry Bradshaw and Milton Ivie.

Memorials may be made to Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 915, Manning, S.C. 29102

Thenia B. Baird

Thenia Blackmon Baird, 80, widow of Cullie Edison Baird, died Sunday, October 27, 2002, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Oct. 7, 1922, in Rich Hill, she was the daughter of the late Chester Franklin Blackmon and the late Zelma Couch Blackmon. She was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra B. Dukes and husband, Marion W., of Turbeville; three brothers, C.F. Blackmon of Sumter, Donald Blackmon of Ocala, Fla., and Steve Blackmon of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; four sisters, Sara Bazzle of N. Charleston, Hazeline Hill of Florence, Edith Aldrich of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Carolyn Truesdale of Camden; a granddaughter, Tonya D. Byrd and husband, John Richard Byrd, of Turbeville; and a grandson-in-law, Shamokin Gladden; and two great-grandchildren, John Richard Byrd II and Victoria-Lynn Byrd.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Misty Lynn Gladden; two sisters, Margaret Holliday and Kathleen “Betty” Green; and a brother, Waddell Blackmon.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. James Holliday officiating.

Burial followed in New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.

James Brown Sr.

James Brown Sr., 81, husband of Robertha “Annie” Harrison Brown, died Sun., Oct. 19, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 4, 1922, in Winnsboro, he was the son of the late Joe Brown and Eva Sharpe Brown. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. Early in life, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and became a lifelong member of Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the trustee board for 38 years. He was employed with Georgia-Pacific for 38 years and retired.

Survivors, besides his wife, Robertha Brown of the home, include one son, James (Lillie) Brown Jr. of Summerton; two grandchildren, Rhonda Brown of Alcolu and Laurestine Dyson of Louisville, Ky.; two sisters-in-law, Geneva Nelson of Manning and Queen (Howard) Lane of Philadelphia.

He was preceded in death by one brother, David Brown.

Funeral services were held on Fri., Oct. 24th at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu. The Rev. Dennis C. Brock, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. Jonathan Anderson, Wallace Nelson and evangelist Laura White. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

J. Maynard Davis, III

Jefferson Maynard Davis, III, 82, widower of Kathleen Hardin Davis, died Sat., Oct. 25, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.

Born Jan. 12, 1921, in Pinewood, he was a son of the late Jefferson Maynard Davis, Jr. and the late Hester Barwick Davis. He was retired from Campbell’s Soup in Sumter and was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church. Mr. Davis was a WWII U. S. Navy veteran and an avid historian.

Survivors include a son, Jefferson Maynard “Chip” Davis IV of Elloree; a brother, Buddy Davis of Garden City; a sister, Dorothy Dingle of Summerton; two granddaughters, Lauren and Kathryn Davis.

Funeral services were held on Mon., Oct. 27th at Summerton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carolyn Malphrus officiated the service.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon County Historical Society or to Summerton United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 35, Summerton, SC 29148.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Richard E. Dozier

DALZELL – Richard Edward Dozier, 30, died Thurs., Oct. 16, 2003 at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala.

Born June 13, 1973, in Clarendon County, he was the son of Reuben L. Dozier Sr. and the late Mary Dozier and the stepson of Ella Dozier.

Richard attended school in Clarendon County, where he graduated from Manning High School. Richard was truly a hard worker and was respected by many. He was employed by Baird Transport Trucking Co. and really enjoyed his work. He was baptized at an early age at Williams Chapel Christian Church, where he attended faithfully.

Survivors include, his wife, Sharon Reardon Dozier; a son, Richard Dozier of Sumter; his father, Reuben L. Dozier Sr.; stepmother, Ella Dozier; a grandmother, Ruth Dupree of Miami; a sister, Ruel “Denise” (Larry) Parker of Savannah, Ga.; two brothers, Reuben L. (Greta) Dozier Jr. of Germany and Anthony Dozier of Miami; two stepbrothers, Reggie Simon of Columbia and Casper Simon of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Wed., Oct. 22nd at Williams Chapel Christian Church, in Manning. The Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
