Mary L. Floyd

Mary Lese Robinson Floyd, 83, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born Oct. 11, 1920, in Turbeville, she was the daughter of the late William Michael and Addie Gibbons Robinson. She was a retired seamstress from Avon-Dale Plant in Olanta and was formerly employed at Belk’s Dept. Store in Sumter. She was a member of Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn (Ernie) Boutwell of Dayton, Ohio and Iris (David) Wallace of San Bernardino, Ca.; a son, Allen (Linda) Floyd of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Dessie Mims and Nelma Morris of Turbeville; twelve grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Herman Floyd.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 26th at Horse Branch Freewill Baptist Church in Turbeville. The Rev. Jake Creech officiated the service. Burial followed the church cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Floride A. Goff

Floride A. Goff, 76, widow of Claude Goff, died Sat., Oct. 25, 2003, in a Lexington nursing home.

Born July 29, 1927, in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Bessie Keisler Adams. She was a retired corrections officer for the state of New York, a member of Red Bank Baptist Church in Lexington, and a former member of Second Baptist Church in Manning.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Whitehead of Pinetop, Az., and Rachael George of Rochester, N.Y.; a son, William E. Goff of Spruce Pine, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Goff.

Funeral services were held Wed., Oct. 29th, in the chapel of Milton Shealy Funeral Home in Batesburg-Leesville.

Burial followed in Ridgecrest Cemetery in Batesburg-Leesville.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Stephens Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth H. Hickson

BRONX, N.Y. – Ruth Harrison Hickson, 82, widower of Isiah Hickson, died Fri., Oct. 17, 2003, at Montesiore Medical Center, Bronx, N.Y.

Born June 2, 1921, in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Saul Harrison and Maggie Preston Harrison. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a faithful member of Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Board, Senior Choir and was a Sunday school teacher. She retired from East Clarendon School District 3.

Survivors include one daughter, Carrie (Elton) Rush of Bronx, N.Y.; a grandson she reared as her own, Michael (Betty Ann) Rush of Turbeville; two grandsons, Rodney and Elton Terrell Rush, both of Bronx, N.Y.; nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister-in-law she reared as a daughter, Willa Dean Crosland; two brothers; four sisters; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sun., Oct. 26th at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Turbeville. The Rev. Shelley Hickson, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Evangelist Alice Thomas. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

James W. Onstott

James Weldon Onstott, 76, husband of the late Dorothy Onstott, died Sun., Oct. 19, 2003, at his residence in Summerton.

Mr. Onstott, born in Philpot, Ky., was the son of the late Everett and Lucy Bristow Onstott. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Dane and Dale Onstott, both of McDonald, Pa.; one brother; and two sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

No local funeral services are planned at this time.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

Drane C. Pritchard Jr.

Drane C. Pritchard Jr., 85, widower of Alice Mae Tisdale Pritchard, died Sun., Oct. 19, 2003, at a local nursing facility.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Drane China Pritchard Sr. and Carrie Winkles Pritchard.

Mr. Pritchard was a member of Providence Baptist Church and attended Southside Baptist Church. He was a retired employee from the City of Sumter and was an Army Air Corps veteran serving in World War II.

Survivors are two brothers, Dewey Pritchard of Manning and John Pritchard of Roanoke, Va.; one sister, Carolyn Ward of Sumter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Clarence and Leo Pritchard; and a sister, Juanita Fleming.

Funeral services were held on Tues., Oct. 21st in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home. The Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiated the service. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Allean N. Richardson

Evangelist Allean Neomi Richardson, 72, died Mon., Oct. 20, 2003, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Born July 20, 1931, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Bertie and Lila Mae Lawson Richardson. She was raised in a Christian home with her parents. At an early age, she joined Liberty Hill AME Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. She served faithfully in many capacities such as a member of the senior usher board, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the missionary society, served as chaplain of the Spring Hill OES No. 263 and a member of the Clarendon Branch NAACP.

Evangelist Richardson graduated from Scott’s Branch High School and continued her education at Morris College in Sumter. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1956. Evangelist Richardson taught school at St. Paul Elementary School for 19 years until her health failed. On Sept. 25, 1975, she received her license to preach the gospel. Evangelist Richardson then changed her membership from Liberty Hill AME Church to St. John’s Holiness Tabernacle, where she served as the assistant pastor faithfully until her health failed. She loved the Lord and always witnessed to others for the Lord. She was loving and kind in all her deeds, always willing to extend a helping hand.

Survivors include three sisters, Blondel Delaney of the home, Willean Jordon and Juanita Buchanan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one adopted daughter, Regenia Mack of San Diego, Ca.; one godchild, Jasmine Smalls of Summerton; one sister-in-law, Amanda Richardson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Walter Jordon and Aubrey Buchanan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one grandaunt, Annetta Warley of Summerton; two aunts, Leola Lawson of Manning and Suester Richardson of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Services were held on Sat., Oct. 25th at Liberty Hill AME Church. The Rev. Malachi Duncan, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in Liberty Hill AME Churchyard Cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Bertha McKinney-Bradley

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mrs. Bertha McKinney-Bradley, widow of Mr. Herman Bradley, died Sat., Oct. 18, 2003, at the White Oak Mantel Nursing Facility of Charlotte, N.C.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. Gallishaw McKinney and Mrs. Charlotte McKinney.

Survivors include two brothers, Mr. Edward Hilton and Mr. Henery Hilton of Manning; and four sisters, Binkie McKinney of Charlotte, N.C., Clara B. King of Brunswick, Ga., the Rev. Etherline Bethune and Susie Gibson of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Mon., Oct. 27th at Gierer Funeral Chapel, 115 N. Cloudman St., Charlotte, N.C.

Willard O. Brogdon

OLANTA – Willard Oree Brogdon, 77, widower of evangelist Fannie Brand Brogdon, died Thurs., Oct. 16, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 10, 1926, in the Biggers community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Louis Brogdon and Susan Lurena Fleming Brogdon. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville, where he served before becoming ill.

Survivors include four sons, John (Martha) Capers of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Shawn Brogdon of Charleston, Jamie Brogdon of Lamar and Tyrone Brogdon of Georgia; four daughters, Barbara (Thomas) Simmons and Jacquline Brand of the home, Ester (Evans) Lawrence of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Charlotte DuBose of Darlington; one brother, Lester (Retha Mae) Brogdon of Virginia; four grandchildren he raised as his own, Chymes Simmons, Kenyatta Simmons, Joseph Simmons and John Player; 34 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert James Brogdon, two brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sat., Oct. 25th at Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville. The Rev. Oliver Davis, pastor, officiated the service. Burial followed in the New McFadden Cemetery.

Edward Burgess Jr.

Edward “Bubba” Burgess Jr., 80, widower of Mary Wilson Burgess, died Oct. 18, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Aug. 7, 1925, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Edward Burgess Sr. and Lou Addie Francis Burgess. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a lifelong member of Harmony Presbyterian Church. He was retired from the Witherspoon Logging Co. in Manning after a 42-year career as a truck driver.

Survivors include two sons, James Edward (Annette) Burgess of Manning and Reginald (Sandra) Burgess of Odenton, Md.; three daughters, Patricia (Elijah) Sheriff of Reading, Pa., Stella Burgess of Philadelphia, and Annette Chapman of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Robert Burgess of Philadelphia; two sisters, Margaret Wilson of Philadelphia and Eva Ruth Brown of Manning; 19 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three siblings.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at Harmony Presbyterian Church, U.S. 301 N., Alcolu, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Ernestine M. Chapman

Ernestine Morris Chapman, 77, wife of Harry Edgar Chapman, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at McLeod Health in Florence.

Born Oct. 26, 1927, in McKenny, Va., she was a daughter of the late George Mobley and Annie Mays Morris. She was a member of Manning United Methodist Church, where she was in charge of planning and cooking of meals for various activities, president of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Nelle Wells Circle.

She is survived by her husband of Manning; two daughters, Jan (Ricky) Hucks of Florence and Robin Shultz of Manning; three sisters, Gladys Toom of Chester, Va., Rachel Cauble of Colonial Heights, Va. and Caroline Carlton Boiser of Colonial Heights; four grandchildren, Meredith and Madison Hucks of Florence, and Melissa and Thomas Shultz of Madison, Wis.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Olive Morris Barnes.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, in the Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Debra Quilling and the Rev. Steve Shugart officiating.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church Capital Campaign, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.
