Johnnie Lee Green Sr.

MIAMI, Fla. – Johnnie Lee Green Sr., 69, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at North Shore Convalescent Home, Miami.

Born Jan. 3, 1938, in Summerton, he was a son of the late William Green and Susie O. Green. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and he attended Liberty Hill AME Church. At an early age, he moved to Miami to pursue a career with the City of Miami.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Green of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Walter (Deloris) Green of Brooklyn and Joseph Green of High Point, N.C.; three sisters, Willeen G. Canty, Susan E. Green and Durette Green, all of Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren; three aunts, Rachel Junius of Summerton, Camilla Green of Hartford and Ruth Junius of Thomasville, N.C.; one uncle, Ben Oliver of Baltimore, Md.; and a devoted friend, Aldora Beard of Miami.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Eartha Mae Green; brothers, William, Charles and Bernnie Green; and one son, Johnnie L. Green Jr.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at Greater St. Phillips RUME Church, River Road, Pinewood, with Rev. Capers, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Liberty Hill AME Church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of services.

Lucille Keefe Jones

PAMPLICO, S.C. – Ruth Lucille Keefe Jones, 90, of Pamplico died early Monday morning, Jan. 29, 2007 at the McLeod Hospice House after an illness.

Mrs. Jones was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Lonnie L. and Glennie Poston Keefe. She was a homemaker, a lifetime member of Beulah Free Will Baptist Church, an active member until her illness of the Ladies Auxiliary of the church and the Mattie Bazen Sunday School Class,

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, William Joe Jones; by three brothers, Grover Keefe, Archie Keefe and Martin Keefe; and by two sisters, Buena Jones and Mary Lee King.

Surviving are two sons, Joel Keith “Shadie” Jones of Santee and Alvin (Betty) Jones of Pamplico; three daughters, Janice Jones Elvis of Florence, Ruth Ann Langley of Lake City and Lou Nell (Roddy) Merritt of Moncks Corner; one grandson, Kevin Benjamin (Danielle) Poston of Pamplico and one special great-granddaughter, Kaleigh Marie Poston.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007 in the Beulah Free Will Baptist Church in Pamplico.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice, 1203 E. Cheves Street, Florence, S.C. 29506.

Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Hazel T. Boyce

Hazel Thompson Boyce, 86, widow of Raymond Eugene Boyce, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at a local nursing center.

Born in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Thompson and the late Callie Daniels Thompson. Mrs. Boyce was a retired civil service employee.

Surviving are one son, Gene Boyce of Woodrow; two daughters, Judy (Kim) Seals of Chapin and Cheryl (Furman) Dabbs of Sumter; three brothers, Hugh Thompson of Alcolu, Murray Thompson of Sumter and Julian Thompson of Wichita Falls, Texas; two sisters, Joyce Link and Cleo DuBose, both of Sumter; and four grandchildren, Callie Seals, Rebekah Seals, Janis Dabbs and Furman Dabbs.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Billy Thompson, Ed Thompson and Harold Thompson; and four sisters, Eva Lee, Caro Andrews, Dot Floyd and Cecil Thompson.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew Basham officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Lemira Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 514 Boulevard Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Willean Hilton

Willean Hilton, 66, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at Carolina Hospital System in Florence.

Born June 17, 1940, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Willie Lee Hilton and Lucy Gibson Hilton. She received her formal education at Scott’s Branch High School. In her youth she accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton. She later joined the Church of God by Faith.

Survivors include four daughters, Emma Mae Pearson of New York, N.Y., Maxine (Gregory) Pack of Bronx, N.Y., Elizabeth (Charles) Pearson of Manning and Delorise Hilton of the home; a brother, Moses Hilton of Summerton; and 17 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Hilton; a nephew; and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, at the Church of God by Faith in Davis Station with Elder Thomas Davis, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home, LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Mell M. Ingram

PINEWOOD – Mell McLeod Ingram, 91, widow of John Guy Ingram Sr., died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born Oct. 29, 1915, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Seymon and Bessie Geddings McLeod. She was a member of Paxville Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara A. James of Darlington and Betty I. Harrelson of Pinewood; a son, John Guy (Joye) Ingram Jr. of Sumter; a brother, Joe Manning “Joby” McLeod of Sumter; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, in Paxville Cemetery with the Rev. Floyd “Pete” Ingram officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Tillman Ragin

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Tillman “Big T” Ragin, 58, husband of Willie Mae Young Ragin, died Jan. 22, 2007, at Brookdale Hospital, Brooklyn.

Born July 28, 1948, in Pinewood, Clarendon County, he was a son of Ruby Ragin Martin and the late Thomas Gibson and stepson of the late Bill Martin. He received his formal education in the public schools of St. Paul and Scott’s Branch High in Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined St. Phillip RUME Church in Pinewood. After moving to Brooklyn, he attended Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He worked at Brooklyn College as a maintenance man and groundskeeper.

Survivors besides his wife, Willie Mae Ragin of Brooklyn, and mother, Ruby Mae Martin, include one son, Kenneth (Keisha S.) Young of Queens, N.Y.; two daughters, Felicia Ragin and Veronica Shariese Ragin, both of Brooklyn; one brother, Carl Gibson of New Winber, N.Y.; eight sisters, Willie Mae Wilder and Julia (Mensah) Juniors, both of Brooklyn, Redia Mae Martin, Malqueen Martin, Jacqulin (Mack) Gibson, Gail Gibson and Joann Gibson, all of New York, N.Y., and Carlyon (Sago) Gibson of Washingtonville, N.Y.; one uncle, Dennis Gibson of Pinewood; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with Brother James Simmons officiating.

Burial was in St. Phillip RUME Church Cemetery, Pinewood.

Bonnie Nash Mathis

Bonnie Nash Mathis, 85, widow of W. S. Mathis, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, January 11, 2007.

Born October 29, 1921, in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Homer Dixon and Annie Mae Mahoney Nash. She was a Manning High School graduate and attended Anderson College. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and a member of Manning First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, and where her husband served as a deacon and jointly they prepared communion for many years. She used her floral talents freely and made flower arrangements and corsages for anyone who asked, and used her culinary skills to prepare food and bake cakes for the bereaved or anyone in need. Her generosity was openly and secretly appreciated by many, and her beautiful smile is brought to mind when her name is mentioned.

Surviving are four daughters, Margaret Ann (Tom) Vassar, of Richmond, Va., Mary Ellen (C.A.) Vann of Columbia, Bonnie Kate (Bob) Inzetta of Greensboro, N.C., and Ruby Mathis (Byron) Goff of Elgin; a sister, Betty Nash Dinkins Smith of Manning; a sister-in-law, Thelma Nash of Manning; eight grandchildren, Tracy Strickland, Christy Bauer, Chestley Vann, Brandon Vann, Courtney Davis, Karen Horky, Laurie Pace and Brandon Goff; and eight great grandchildren, Jennifer and Joel Bauer, Vassar and Mathis Strickland, Kaitlyn and Ethan Horky and Layla and Waylon Pace.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Byron Nash of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in Manning First Baptist Church, with her son-in-law, the Rev. Tom Vassar, officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were two grandsons, Chestley and Brandon Vann, and nephews, Joe Mathis, Claude Dinkins, John Frank and Homer Nash, Jr.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210 or to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce Street, Manning, S.C. 29102.

John Smith Land

SUMTER – John Smith “Jack” Land, 81, husband of Alma Ruth Daniels Land, died Sunday, January 21, 2007, in Covenant Place in Sumter.

Born October 6, 1925, in Foreston, he was a son of the late Ceth Smith Land and the late Rosa Lee Plowden Land. He was a retired GTE supervisor after 44 years, a member of First United Methodist Church of Conway, a member of Hut Bible Class, a United States Navy veteran of WWII, a member of the Kiwanis, and Pioneer Telephone Club. Mr. Land was a member of Horry American Legion Post #0111, where he served as adjutant for seven years and was a diligent worker. The 2003 American Legion baseball season was dedicated in his honor, and he was Legionnaire of the year in 1994 and 1996, and received the Americanism Award in 1997 and 2001.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; three daughters, Ellen (Richard) Taylor of Manning, Mary Ann Land of Conway, and Nancy (Mike) Hodge of Easley; a sister, Martha Lee Johnson of Manning; three grandchildren, Melissa Land (Gary) Koenig, Dr. Ryan (Dr. Virginia) Taylor and Carrie Ruth Hodge; and two great grandchildren, Maya and Evan Koenig.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, John William Land; a brother, Ervin P. Land; and a sister, Clara Ellen Rodgers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Carl Harris and the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hut Bible Class, 1001 5th Avenue, Conway, S.C. 29526, or to Covenant Place, 2825 Carter Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Laura V. Hersperger

Laura Vivian Hersperger, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at her residence.

Born in Turbeville, she was a daughter of James Harrison Gibbons and Roxie Laney Morris Gibbons. She was a retired public school teacher/ principal for more than 40 years. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Turbeville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel P. Hersperger; and four brothers, Sydney Gibbons, Randolph Gibbons, Lucious Everette Gibbons and William Eugene Gibbons.

She is survived by four sisters, Zelma G. Rhodes, Ethel G. Floyd and Hazel G. Reynolds, all of Turbeville, and Louise G. Nesbitt of Lynchburg; a brother, Dr. Joseph Harrison Gibbons of Columbia; and 24 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2007, at First Baptist Church in Turbeville.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.
