Marian K. Thames

Marian Kelly “Jimmie” Thames, 87, widow of Taft Thames, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 17, 1919, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late John Marion Kelly and the late Mary Anna Ridgill Kelly. She was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Ann (Fred) Trexler of Manning; a granddaughter, Emily T. (Jay) Krathwohl; a great granddaughter, Ashley Harrington of Manning; a brother, Joe S. Kelly of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian K. Stone; and a brother, Charles B. Kelly Sr.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Dr. Paul Sullivan officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her nephews.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory in Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Debra Ann M. Anderson

COLUMBIA – Debra Ann McCray Anderson died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007.

Born in Harlem, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Willie and Mable Rogers McCray. She was reared by her deceased grandmother, Annie Rogers. She was a 1983 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School, Summerton, and received a bachelor’s degree in math from the University of South Carolina. She was a member of Brookland Baptist Church, the Charles B. Jackson Singers and the YWA. She served her country honorably in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are her husband, Jeremy Anderson; daughter, Jasmine D. Anderson; and sister, Gail (Melvin) Baker.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Brookland Baptist Church.

Burial was in Palmetto Cemetery.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Columbia was in charge of the arrangements.

Marjorie Black

Marjorie Laurette Matthews Black, 84, widow of Jefferson Walter Black, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at her residence.

She was born in Papua, New Guinea, a daughter of the late Edward W. Matthews and Elizabeth Sobriski Matthews. She retired from the Army-Air Force Exchange Service and was also a member of the AAFES Retirees’ Association. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.

Surviving are two sons, Michael J. (Anne) Black of Manning, and Christopher E. (Dottie) Black of Sumter; a daughter, Lorraine M. Curtis of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Chris Curtis; and a sister, Alma Gannon.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Burke, C.Ss.R., officiating.

Burial followed in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 332 North Lauderdale, Memphis, Tenn. 38105-2479, or to Tri-County Home Health Care, 2650-B Hardee Cove, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

James D. Clark

James Douglas Clark, 66, husband of Sue Carol Darling Clark, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at his home in Manning.

Born May 12, 1940, in Gable, he was a son of the late William Wesley and Alice Crosby Clark. He was a retired salesman and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a daughter, Jamie Sue Clark of New York City, N.Y.; a son, Ronald Clark of Hammond, Ind.; a brother, Paul (Sandra) Clark of Michigan City, Ind.; a sister, Kathy Clark of Manning; four grandchildren; special friends, Cheri and Todd McDonald; and loving caregiver, Ruby King.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

Burial followed in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.

Richard H. Miller

Mr. Richard Harrison “Buck” Miller, 80, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 2, 1926, he was a son of the late Richard Miller and Mary Brown Miller McDonald and stepson of the late Charlie D. McDonald. He was joined in Holy matrimony to Madgelene Ragin for 55 years.

He received his formal education in Clarendon County. He was baptized at an early age and was a devoted member of Mount Zero Missionary Baptist for many years. Mr. Miller worked as a farmer most of his life, but also worked a variety of other jobs.

Mr. Miller, known as “Buck” to his family and friends, was a loving, gentle and kind man. His warm smile and generous nature endeared him to many. Although Mr. Miller and his wife were childless, they shared their love with their “adopted children.” Mr. Miller loved people, so it was not unusual when he continued to visit those who were sick or shut-in even when his own health began to deteriorate. Mr. Miller will long be remembered for his tender spirit.

Fond memories of “Buck” will be cherished by his loving and devoted wife; his three sisters, Vera Wineglass of Indianapolis, Ind., Alma B. Mack of Philadelphia, Pa., and Blondell (Manuel) Fargas of Summerton; two brothers, Alonzo R. McDonald of Summerton and Charles (Loretta) McDonald of Manning; a brother-in-law, Vernon Hampton of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Mattie Ragin of Orangeburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 15 at Mount Zero Baptist Church, Paxville, with the Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, officiating.

Final resting place was the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were nephews and friends.

Honorary pallbearers were Henry Lawson, Archie Lemmon, Roosevelt Lemon, Roosevelt Postell, James L. Thompson, Roosevelt Wilson, Manuel Fargas, Alonzo R. McDonald and Charles E. McDonald.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals was in charge of the arrangements.

Ernest E. Miller

FLORENCE – Ernest E. Miller, 78, of Florence, husband of Vileta Parker Miller, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, in a local hospital. He was born Nov. 4, 1928, in Florence County, to the late Charlie and Rosalee Tedder Miller.

He was a counter salesman for Carolina Auto Supply and later worked for Central Oil and Supply. He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church and a faithful member of the Men’s Bible Class.

Among his survivors, in addition to his wife, are daughters, Martha M. (Danny) Poston of Manning and Mary M. (Walter) Miller of Florence; grandchildren, Danny Jr., Danielle and Preston Poston and Amber and Kyle Miller; great-grandchildren, Emily and J.P. Poston; and sister, Doris Hancock of Florence.

He was also predeceased by a sister, Inalou Beard.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at First Free Will Baptist Church.

Burial followed at Florence Memorial Gardens. The services were conducted by the Rev. Lee Patrick.

Cain Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Louise Mildred Disher Browder

GREELEYVILLE – Louise Mildred Disher Browder, 89, widow of Claude Marion Browder, died Friday, January 26, 2007, in Lexington Extended Care in Lexington.

Born May 6, 1917, in Marion, she was a daughter of the late Calhoun and Maggie Osborne Disher. She was a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Jimmy (Pat) Browder of Gaston and Jerry (Glenda) Browder of Gilbert; a brother, Billy (Loretta) Disher of Manning; eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and six great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Browder; six brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Grover Mixon officiating.

Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Greeleyville.

Memorials may be made to Lexington Extended Care, 815 Old Cherokee Road, Lexington, S.C. 29072 or to Greeleyville Baptist Church, P. O. Box 276, Greeleyville, S.C. 29056.

John E. Murray

John Ell Murray, the son of the late Fred and Edna Dingle Murray, was born Sept. 28, 1958, in Marion County, Mullins. He died Oct. 14, 2006.

He was reared by his grandmother, Susie Dingle, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County. John attended the public schools of Clarendon School District 1 and graduated from Scott’s Branch High School in 1978. He was a licensed contractor and the owner of Back Gate Mobile Home Set Up. John was employed with Gold Kist Co. of Sumter.

Fond memories will be cherished by three sisters, Juanita (Benito) Smith of Lakeland, Fla., Dorothy Murray of Manning and Evelyn (Russell) Drayton of Georgetown; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Felix Pearson, and one sister, Elizabeth Murray.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 19, 2006, at the House of God Miracle Temple in Davis Station, where the Rev. Oceila Blue is the pastor.

Josephine B. Mahoney

Josephine Brunson Mahoney, 89, widow of James Daniel Mahoney, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, in Sumter.

Born April 30, 1917, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late W.J. and Pauline Lowder Brunson. Growing up, she was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. After her marriage, she joined the Manning First Baptist Church with her husband, where she served as a faithful nursery worker for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Ida (Everette) Harrington of Sumter; and a son-in-law, Jack Barrett of Goldsboro, N.C. Mrs. Mahoney is also survived by four grandchildren, Michael (Debra) Harrington, Kim (James) Whitmire, Leslie (Billy) Anderson, and Greg (Kim) Barrett; a daughter-in-law, Angie Wise; great-grandchildren, Ryan Herring, Hayley Barrett, Emilie Whitmire, Ashton Herring, Daniel Harrington, Heida Barrett, Kylie Anderson, Grace, Jim and Ellie Whitmire, and Noah Barrett.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Barrett; brothers, William, Clifton and Ralph Brunson; and sisters, Mary Lou Thames and Pearle Jayroe.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Jerry Cottone and the Rev. Greg Allday officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Michael Harrington, Greg Barrett, Ryan Herring, Billy Anderson, Kevin Jayroe and H.B. Mahoney.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, S.C. 29102 or to a charity of one’s choice.
