Patricia A. Nelson

Patricia Ann Nelson, daughter of the late Henry and Isabell Foxworth Nelson, died Dec. 1, 2006.

Born July 26, 1953, in Marion County, she was a 1971 graduate of Marion High School. She furthered her education at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and a master’s degree in guidance.

At an early age, Ms. Nelson joined Wise Chapel AME Church, where she actively participated in the young adult choir, served as president of the women’s missionary society, president of the pastor’s aid club, member of the trustee board and member of the hospitality committee.

For 31 years, Ms. Nelson molded the minds of many children in Clarendon School District 1, where she taught physical education and health and was a part-time guidance counselor. She also served as women’s basketball, volleyball and softball coach and earned several championships. She was given the honor of District Teacher of the Year of 2003.

Sgt. 1st Class Nelson served in the U.S. Army Reserves for more than 20 years. She was a member of the 7PSS Battalion at Fort Jackson, where she was an instructor.

She was an active member of the Sumter Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Those left to celebrate her life and grow from her love are four sisters, Henrietta (Richard) Williams of Marion, Cathy (Curtis) McQueen of Florence, Linda (Tommy) Woods of Jacksonville, Fla., and Darlene Williams of Columbia; one brother, Gerald L. Nelson of Marion; seven nieces, Monique (John) Rickenbaker of Orangeburg, Shauna (Bruce) Golsten, Ashley Pickett and Danielle Hayes of Columbia, Tamara Woods of Jacksonville, Amber McQueen of Florence and Tameka (Elden) Pelletier of Dover, Del.; four great-nephews, Jordan, Roman, London and Elden Jr; an adopted grandmother, Margaret Nelson; four sisters, Cynthia (James) Hammet and Paula (Ricky) Bryant, both of Summerton, Jennifer Hyman of Virginia Beach, Va., and Gussie Nelson of Manhattan, N.Y.; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and close friends.

A memorial service celebrating the life and accomplishments of Patricia Ann Nelson was held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007 at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton.

Pauline Elmore

Pauline Frances Hicks Elmore, 84, widow of Lorain Eldridge Elmore, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Nov. 11, 1922, in the Hicks community of Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Martin Lane Hicks and the late Mary Isabelle Keels Hicks. She was manager and bookkeeper of Elmore Farms, cemetery custodian of Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and a homemaker.

Surviving are three daughters, Nina E. (Wendell) Blanton of Irmo, Faye E. (Douglas) Fellers of Chapin, and Sharon E. (Johnny) Burke of Alcolu; a sister-in-law, Vance E. Hudson of Six Mile; six grandchildren, David Blanton, John E. Blanton, Brian Fellers, Michael Fellers, Bobby Burke and Lori Welch.

The family wishes to thank friends at Trinity United Methodist Church for their steadfast love and support and the loving, capable staff of Generations and Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Charlie Brookshire officiating.

Burial followed in Trinity-Alcolu Community Cemetery, U.S. 301, Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity-Alcolu Community Cemetery, c/o Johnny L. Burke, 6172 U.S. 301, Alcolu, S.C. 29001, or to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund.

James D. Wingard

James Davis “Dee” Wingard, age 76, was born Nov. 24, 1930, and died on Thursday, March 29, 2007, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mr. “Dee” was born in a shack at Sparkleberry Logging Camp on the hill of Santee River Swamp in the Parker community of Orangeburg County. In January 1931, his family moved to the Town of Turbeville to the Pope House on Pope Street.

He was a charter member of the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church and a trustee of the Turbeville School. He went to work for Wingard and Coker Gin, Saw Mill and Farm Service, where he worked the sawmill, firing the boiler to saw lumber. He also ran the cotton gin, as operator and manager.

He helped start the volunteer fire department in Turbeville, serving as assistant chief and later served as chief. In January 1957, he drove to Michigan to pick up the first fire truck for the Turbeville Volunteer Fire Department. He served two terms on the State Fireman’s Board.

He served on Clarendon County Farm Bureau Board for many years. He went into the trucking business hauling farm supplies, grain, cotton and tobacco. He was an avid gardener and loved to share his produce with family and friends. He joined the Airstream Club Coastal Unit No. 150 in 1996 and Camping of the Carolinas. He was a Mason and member of Fidelity Lodge No. 394.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, George Henry Wingard and Ila Eleanor Coker Wingard: and three brothers, Harry “Jiggs” Wingard, Jack Wingard and Loren Wingard.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Morris Wingard; two daughters, Candee Wingard (Ronnie) Buddin and Mary Dee Wingard (Larry) Youngblood; three grandchildren, Dustin and Jamie Buddin and Devyn Wingard Youngblood; and three step-grandchildren, Kasey Buddin Holmes, Stevie Buddin and Kara Youngblood.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 31, 2007, at the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Free Will Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Rebecca M. Medley

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Rebecca Montgomery Medley, 58, wife of James Arthur Medley, died Friday, March 23, 2007, at Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans.

Born April 14, 1948, in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of Elder Andrew Montgomery and Beulah Wallace Montgomery. She received her formal education at Rosenwald School and at the Old Manning Training School. She graduated from Sawyer Trade School in Providence, R.I. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Savior and attended Pine Grove AME Church. She was employed by Path Mark.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Aenise) Montgomery of New Orleans and Kevin (Felicia) Montgomery of Orange, N.J.; two brothers, Enoch Montgomery II and Andrew Lee Montgomery, both of Providence; three sisters, Dorene Montgomery and Queen Ester Montgomery, both of Providence, and Laurie Williamson of Manhattan, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 31, 2007. at Pine Grove AME Church, the Old River Road, Greeleyville, with the Rev. Moses Wilson, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

April Carter

April Dawn Guckert Carter, 55, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 28, 1951, in Pontiac, Mich., she was a daughter of William E. Guckert and Virginia Dawn Bullard Robertson. She was a former medical assistant and was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving besides her father of North Syracuse, N.Y., and mother of Avon Park, Fla., are two daughters, Kimberly Fuentes of Coral Springs, Fla., and Heather Shaw of Miami, Fla.; three grandsons; a granddaughter; companion, Bill Letourneau; and many uncles and aunts.

A rosary was held on Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Robert D. McFadden Jr.

Robert D. McFadden Jr., 48, husband of Jannie Ham McFadden, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Sept. 25, 1957, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Robert Davis McFadden Sr. and Mattie Brown McFadden.

He accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Howard Chapel AME Church. He received his formal education at Walker-Gamble School and East Clarendon High School.

Survivors include his wife, Jannie Ham McFadden of the home; parents, Robert Davis McFadden Sr. and Mattie Brown McFadden of New Zion; a son, Davonta Robert Eugene McFadden of the home; four daughters, LaSha (Tony) Guerrero of Texas, Kristella Ham, ChiKela McFadden and Daniella McFadden, all of the home; six brothers, Alvina Brown, Cleo (Doris) McFadden and Ronald McFadden, all of New Zion, Willie Lee (JoAnn) Player of Bennettsville, Lester (JoAnn) McFadden of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Johnny Bernard McFadden of New Zion; four sisters, Mary (Donnie) Curtis and Barbara McFadden, both of Ft. Lauderdale, and Leola (Eugene) Kennedy and Cynthia Ceasar, both of New Zion; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at Howard Chapel AME Zion Church in New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating; the Rev. Jerome McCray presiding; the Rev. Carnell Hampton, the Rev. Lucious Wheeler and the Rev. Dr. Johnnie McFadden assisting.

Burial was in Old McFadden Cemetery, Lake City.

Atlean Williams

Atlean Thames Nelson Williams, 47, wife of Prince Williams, died Oct. 2, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 28, 1959, in the Ram Bay section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late David Roosevelt Thames and Easter Juanita Dingle. She received her formal education in the public schools in Summerton. In her youth, she joined Elizabeth Baptist Church. Later she joined Manning Church of Christ, where she served faithfully.

Survivors include two daughters, Lashonna (Jaqwan) Nelson and Syneathia (Larry) Nelson; two brothers, Jacob Thames of Manning and David (Tracy) Thames of Sumter; two sisters, Loretta Evans of Manning and Deloris (Walter) Thames of Virginia; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at Manning Church of Christ in Manning, with the Rev. Halbert L. Tucker, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Manning Church of Christ Cemetery in Manning.

Willie A. McQuilla

Willie M. McQuilla, 50, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Aug. 28, 1956, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Hosea McQuilla and Janie Green McQuilla. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. Mr. McQuilla was a self-employed horticulturist for many years. He was an avid hobbyist of cabinet-making and drywalling.

Survivors include one daughter, Jacquelynn (Kevin) Sanders; three granddaughters, Daesha, Diamond and Kevionna Sanders; one longtime loving friend, Henrietta Grant; three brothers, Hosea, Joshua, and James (Josephine) McQuilla; two sisters, Janie (Larry) Harris and Julia (Richard) Gregg, all of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and family members not listed.
Mr. McQuilla was preceded in death by two sisters, Fannie McQuilla-Dukes and Katie McQuilla-Leach.

Memorial services were held on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, from John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter, with eulogies by family members.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter was in charge.

Vermille M. Brinson

Vermille Morris Brinson, 88, died Sunday, March 25, 2007, at a local nursing center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Willie Morris and the late Margaret McKnight Morris. She was retired from Drapery Contractors.

Survivors include three children, Kirby Brinson Sr., John W. “Billy” (Lorine) Brinson, and Betty B. Bramlette, all of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie Barwick.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Marxh 28, 2007, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
