Henry Dubose Jr.

Henry “Willis” Dubose Jr. was born June 23, 1931, in Clarendon County. He was the son of the late Henry Dubose Sr. and Annie E. Dubose. He was called home to rest Oct. 10, 2006.

He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he was baptized and joined his family at Antioch UME Church in Rimini. Although he worked for Georgia Pacific as a young man, farming was his avocation and he subsequently committed himself to farming his land as his life’s work until his deteriorating health forced him to retire.

He was predeceased by his brother, Isaac Wilson Sr.; his first wife, Mamie DuBose; and a daughter, Loretta DuBose.

Cherished memories of his life will be shared by his wife, Julia Clark Dubose; a devoted sister, Elease (Leon) Canty; two children, Deyun (Anthony) Riley of Sumter and Rainey H. Crosby of Columbia; two special nieces, Yolanda Canty of Cedarhurst, N.Y., and Trecia Canty of Houston, Texas; two nieces, Catherine Wilson and Mildred Wilson, and a nephew, Isaac Wilson Jr., all of Newark, N.J.; an aunt, Mattie Dubose of Manhattan, N.Y.; 10 stepchildren, the Rev. James (Alethia) Clark, Issac Jr. (Gloria) Clark, Roger (Nina) Clark, Betty Fulton, Nancie (Dan) Benbow, all of Sumter, Rosa (Charles) Pendergrass of Manning, Almeta (Albertus) Simon and Fannie Glover, both of Paxville, Altheia (Joe) Gamble of Wedgefield, and Richard Clark of Columbia; three grandchildren; five sisters-in-law, Lennie Wilson of Newark, Mary (Willie) Brunson and Sarah (John) Holliday, both of Pinewood, Joanne (Willie) Richburg of Manning and Nancy (Robert) Davis of Sumter; four brothers-in-law, Samuel (Nancy) Adams of Manning, Franklin Jr. (Mary Ida) Adams of Summerton, Leon (Mary) Adams of Philadelphia, Pa., and Ramson (Rosa Mae) Adams of Elmsford, N.Y.; three grandchildren; 34 step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at Antioch UME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, the Rev. Richard McKnight Jr. and the Rev. Melissa Green.

Burial followed in Halfway Swamp in the Halfway Cemetery in Pinewood.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph R. Floyd

Joseph Rhames Floyd, 79, husband of Linda Huggins Floyd, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, at a local nursing center.

Born in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Mahony Witherspoon Floyd and the late Edith Elizabeth Morris Floyd. Mr. Floyd was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church for 20 years. He was a member of the Cains Mill Club and was a Mason. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Yorktown for four years and was a member of the USS Yorktown Association and a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a former firefighter with the city of Sumter and a retired director of codes enforcement for the city of Sumter.

Mr. Floyd was twice married, first to the late Vivian Grooms Floyd.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a son, Gene Floyd of Sumter; two daughters, Sherran Floyd (Glenn) Evans of Sumter and Sheila (Will) Floyd-Evans of Columbia; two stepdaughters, Dawn F. (Wade) Tate of Augusta, Ga., and Christie R. (John) Boykin of Sumter; two brothers, Alfred J. Floyd of Sumter and Hinson Floyd of Georgetown; a sister, Inez Mills of Florida; six grandchildren, Bryan Floyd, Christopher Evans, Caycee Evans, Carlee Evans, Jonathan Floyd-Evans and Hudson Floyd-Evans; and four step-grandchildren, Jessica Nave, Justin Nave, Carissa Tate and Brielle Tate.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2006, in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Clay Smith officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Eli Parnell, Doug Mathis, Eric Hayes, Al Floyd, Ronnie Grooms and Bob Grooms.

Honorary pallbearers were Gus Green, Ralph Watts, and retired Col. Forist Dupree.

Memorials may be made to Wilson Hall School Building Fund, 2801 W. Wise Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Olive Grove Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Earl Thigpen

Earl Thigpen, 75, widower of Doris Dennis Thigpen, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at a local nursing center.

Born in Turbeville, he was a son of the late William Ellabe Thigpen and the late Lillie Belle Logan Thigpen.

He was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God and was retired from Hodge Trucking Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include five children, Deborah Nesbitt and her husband, Bobby, Leland Earl Thigpen, Linda Joann Thigpen, Janice Ruth Anderson and her husband, Roy, and Marie McConnell and her husband, Bob, all of Sumter; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Truett, and two sisters, Roxie Mae Truett and Emma Hill.

Graveside services were held on Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, in the Wells Cemetery with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.

The family wishes to express their special thanks to the nurses and staff of Sumter Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Rosa White Green

Mrs. Rosa White Green, 87, entered eternal rest Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late James Brown and Sarah White. She was reared in a Christian home by Louise White. Mrs. Green accepted Christ as her Savior and joined St. Peter AME Church, where she was a member of the Missionary and Stewardess Board. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors are six sons, Willie (Janatha) Green of Orange, N.J., Abbie (Bernice) Green of Newark, N.J., Rufus Green of Columbia, William Green of Manfield, Ohio, Larry (Geneva) Green of Wilmington, N.C., and Joseph (Martha) Green of Pinewood; two daughters, Elouise (Al) Thomas of Thomasville, N.C., and Rosa Mae (Johnnie Lee) McBride of Wilmington; one additional daughter-in-law, Sarah Green of Thomasville; 28 grandchildren; one great-grandchild she raised in the home, Brittany Green; 60 additional great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Sammie Lee Green; two daughters, Sarah James and Cammie Thomas; six grandchildren; three brothers; five sisters; and one daughter-in-law.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at St. Peter AME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Larry Davis, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Dorothy White, the Rev. Inez Junious and the Rev. Leroy T. James.

Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery in Rimini.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of these arrangements.

Rutha Epps McDowell

LYNCHBURG – Rutha Epps McDowell, 66, wife of Jethro McDowell, died Nov. 18, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Feb. 8, 1940, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Geneva Epps Wilson and the late Henry Epps. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Asbury United Methodist Church and later became a member of Step Off Faith Church in Sumter. She attended Johnson Elementary School.

Survivors include her mother, Geneva Epps Wilson of Lynchburg; husband, Jethro McDowell of the home; mother-in-law, Dessie McDowell of Lynchburg; one son, Jethro McDowell Jr. of Lynchburg; five daughters, Barbara (David) Wilson, Deloris McDowell, Delarrse (Roy Lee) McDowell, Phyllis (Dan) McCray, all of Lynchburg, Lena (Lee) McFadden of New Zion; thee adopted daughters, Lateika Burroughs of Columbia, Sharon Brown and Shamieka McDowell, both of Lynchburg; one brother, John (Mae) Epps of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Dorothy (Harry) Brayboy, Clare Wilson and Neva Wilson, all of Lynchburg, and Betty Dewitt of Newark, N.J.; and 17 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lynchburg, with Rev. Samuel Cooper, officiating, assisting the Rev. Dr. Andrew Gamble, Elder Zander Davis and Evangelist Rhonda Keels.

Burial was in Goodman Cemetery.

Abraham Lawson

EWING, N.J. – Abraham “AC” Lawson, 64, husband of Lucille Watson Lawson, died Nov. 17, 2006, at Helen Flud Hospital, Trenton, N.J.

Born Oct. 3, 1942, in Summerton, he was a son of the late James Lawson and Emma Richardson Lawson Isreal and stepson of the late Frank Isreal. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. Early in life, he was employed at Lawson’s Auto Service. After moving, he became employed with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation in auto repair. Later he worked as a sewer treatment worker at New York City Department of Environmental Protection, where he retired in 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Watson Lawson; one son, Al; five daughters, Emma, Brenda, Laverne, Marlesa and Christine; five brothers, David of Columbia, Boston of Miami, Fla., Wash of Summerton, Bill from Brooklyn, N.Y., and Frank from Charlotte, N.C.; six sisters, Eartha Mae of Dallas, N.C., Mary of Charlotte, N.C., Deloris of Summerton, Margie of Summerton, Emma Jean of Bronx, N.Y., and Mary L. of Columbia; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, three stepbrothers and two stepsisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at Santee AME Church in the North Santee community, Summerton, with the Rev. Silas Spann, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Hazel L. Kroegel

Hazel Luree Kroegel, 88, of Manning, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston.

She was born May 16, 1918, to the late Clinton and Millie (Artz) Bush, Liberty Township, Johnstown, Ohio, and was a 1936 graduate of Etna High School. She was a former resident of the Johnstown-Pataskala-Reynoldsburg-Baltimore area for 85 years.

After 16 years, she retired from the Southwest Licking Local School District serving as a cook at Watkins Memorial High/Middle schools. She was an advisor of the Etna Sunny Sewers 4-H Club, member of the Etna Grange and the Basil Garden Club, and belonged to the Sew and Blow Group in Etna. She served as presiding judge and pollworker for many years for the Licking County Board of Elections.

She is survived by her son Jerry T. Kroegel of Summerton; daughter Virginia (Basil) Ramsey of the home; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Kroegel (whom she married in Basil, Ohio, on July 18, 1936); a son, Larry W. Kroegel; her brother and sister-in-law, Clyde E. and Dorothy E. Bush; sister and brother-in-law, Esther C. and Floyd J. Evans; and nephew, Claire Richard Evans.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, at Kauber-Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Walls officiating.
Burial followed at Pataskala Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Basil Garden Club, c/o Rose Cocanour, 712 Canal Road, Baltimore, Ohio 43105, or Etna High School Alumni Association, c/o Grant Snider, P.O. Box 176, Etna, Ohio 43018.

Harry H. Keels

Ret. U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Harry Harvin Keels, 46, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at his home.

Born in Manning, he was a son of Sarah Reid Harvin Keels and the late W.R. Keels Jr. During his military career of 26 years, Mr. Keels was a decorated U.S. Army veteran, having served in Bosnia and with the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq. He received the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, the U.S. Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army (retired) Button, and the NATO Medal. He was a member of Pinewood Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Jessica Keels of Kiel, Germany, and Stephanie Keels of Kellinghusen, Germany; a granddaughter, Hannah Keels of Kiel; his mother of Pinewood; brothers, Ray (Barbara) Keels of Columbia, Md., the Rev. Frank (Kathy) Keels of Greer, and Billy (Linda) Keels of Columbia; sisters, Ginger (Patricio) Reyes of Manning, Ellen (David) Goodroe of Dacula, Ga., Sally (Jum) Mewborne of Swansea, Pat Keels of Sumter and Shand (the Rev. Steve) Johnson of Proctorville, N.C.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at Pinewood Baptist Church with the Revs. Bennie Barwick and Frank Keels officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in the Paxville Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Pinewood Baptist Church, P.O. Box 176, Pinewood, SC 29125, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Eurusher M. Harvin

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Eurusher McFadden Harvin, 85, widow of J.T. Harvin, died November 19, 2006 at St. Luke Hospital, Manhattan, N.Y.

Born Dec. 20, 1921,in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Rosa Ruth McFadden and stepdaughter of the late Willie Bradley.

She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, Brooklyn, N.Y. Prior to her retirement, she worked throughout Brooklyn in various restaurants in the culinary arts.

Survivors include a stepbrother, Richard Johnson of Sumter, a sister, Mrs. Ruth Johnson of Sumter, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Harvin.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at Fleming-Delaine Chapel, Boyce Street, with the Rev. Leroy McElveen officiating.

Burial was in Mt. Zero Baptist Church Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of services.
