Joanne Davis

ROUND-O – Joanne Davis, 56, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, in Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.

Born Aug. 28, 1950, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Opal Davis Davis. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Round-O.

Surviving are two brothers, Jimmy Davis of Manning and Richard Davis of Summerton; three sisters, Sylvia J. Ivie of Charleston, Patricia Stutts of Round-O, and Brenda Morris of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. John Carignan officiating.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of S.C., 5000 Thurmond Mall, Suite 106, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Julia Brunson

Julia Pauline “Juline” Elliott Brunson, 73, widow of Carl Lynward “Ned” Brunson, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at her home in Summerton.

Born Sept. 15, 1933, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Robert Venning Elliott and the late Julia Cantey Elliott. She was former clerk-treasurer for the Town of Summerton for 24 years, and a member of Summerton Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Julie Brunson of Summerton; a son, Robert Matthew (Jo) Brunson of Ridgeland; daughter-in-law, Sharon Goldin of Columbia; two sisters, Kitty Ermis of Summerton and Jennie Bonnette of Cope; two brothers, Joseph C. Elliott of Aiken and Roddy Elliott of Silver; three granddaughters, Frances (Donnie) Feagin, Jennifer (Brian) Alsbrooks and Sarah Brunson; three great-grandsons, Austin and Joseph Alsbrooks and Lyn Feagin; and caregiver, Ethel Mae Stinney.

She was preceded in death by a son, Carl L. Brunson Jr.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, in Summerton Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Garland Hart officiating.

Burial followed in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Presbyterian Church, 16 S. Cantey St., Summerton, S.C. 29148 or to Summerton Evergreen Cemetery Fund.

David R. Tisdale

CONWAY – David R. Tisda1e, 75, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2006 at his residence after an illness.

Mr. Tisdale, husband of the late Frances Hatcher Tisdale, was born in Kingstree, a son of the late R. W. and Dale Strong Tisdale. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Salters.

Surviving are three daughters, Patricia (Grayling) Powell of Johnsonville; Cathy T. (Ken) McNeill of Conway and Teresa T. (Bob) Farley of Florence; three sons, Don (Crystal) Tisdale and Darrell (Tina) Tisdale both of Hemingway, and Shannon Tisdale of Manning; 15 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two sisters, Jane Groves and Ruth Hahn, both of Charleston; and a daughter in law, Tara Tisdale.

He was preceded in death by a son, Davis “David” Tisdale.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006 in Garden of Devotion Cemetery.

Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway was in charge of the arrangements.

Frank E. King

MIAMI, Fla. – Frank Earl King, 90, husband of Ophelia Dupree King, died Nov. 17, 2006, at Mercy Hospital, Miami, Fla.

Born Sept. 17, 1916, in Manning, he was a son of the late Charles King and Lue Plowden King. He accepted Christ and joined Williams Chapel Christian Church. He attended Williams Chapel Christian Church School, graduated from Manning Training High School and attended South Carolina State College. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Air Corps attached to the 99th Air Squadron, and was part of the ground support for the Tuskegee Airmen. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He received the Congressional Gold Medal and President’s Memorial Certificate.

Survivors include his wife, Ophelia Dupree King of the home; two sons, Paul (Shirley) Servance and Wilbur Earl (Linda) King; two daughters, Juliet King and Elsie King Hamler; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by nine brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at Williams Chapel Christian Church in Manning, with the Rev. Emmanuel Evans, pastor, officiating, the Rev. Barney Dozier, presiding, assisted by Evangelist Dora B. Dyson and Minister David Woods.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

James Henry Benbow

James Henry Benbow, 54, died, Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at his residence in Summerton.

Born July 22, 1952, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Hattie Mae Washington and the late Moses Ellison “Son” Benbow. James was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County School District 1 and was a 1970 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. Upon graduation, James relocated to Washington, D.C. For many years, he managed the Wheaton Plaza KFC franchise in Wheaton, Md. Tiring of metropolitan life, in 2003 James returned to South Carolina and was employed by Carolina Gold Kist Inc. James Henry was not a man of many words, but when he spoke he was kind, thoughtful and reflective.

Two brothers, Moses Jr. and Johnny Benbow, preceded him in death.

Loved ones who will cherish his memory and grow from his love are his loving mother, Hattie M. Benbow of Forestville, Md.; two daughters, Kayonna and Sharney of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Bernice Clark of Davis Station, his loving caretaker, Oree Benbow of Summerton, and Janet (Sammy) James of Suitland, Md.; three brothers, Anthony (Patricia) Benbow of Fort Washington, Md., Tyrone and Joseph Robinson of Forestville; two aunts, Artrelle Benbow Brown of Sumter and Carrie Lee Frank of Washington, D.C.; one uncle, Nathaniel Benbow Jr. of Sumter; two great-aunts, Sarah Washington of Summerton and Camilla Washington of Thomasville, N.C.; devoted companion, Camilla Green; a special cousin and best friend, Jarrot Nelson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Benbow were held on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at Holy Temple of Christ in Summerton. Services were officiated by Pastor James Blanding.

Burial followed in Hopkins Cemetery in Davis Station.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Erica R. Tindal

Infant Erica Renee Tindal died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

She was born Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, in Manning, a daughter of Eric Tindal Sr. and Jessica Aiken.

Survivors include her father of Summerton and her mother of Manning; maternal grandmother Pamela Aiken of Manning; great-grandparents Daisy and the Rev. Saymon James of Pinewood; great-great-grandmother Mamie Cummings of Manning; paternal grandparents, James and Henrietta Tindal of Summerton; great-grandmother Susie Tindal of Summerton; a brother, Eric J. Tindal Jr., of the home; and a sister, Ny-Asia Baxter of Manning.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at Manning Cemetery with the Rev. Bernie Colclough, pastor, officiating.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Quattlebaum III

Frank Quattlebaum III, 66, husband of Veola McKnight Quattlebaum, of Gable, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born April 30, 1940, in Sumter County, he was a son of the Rev. Frank Quattlebaum Jr. and Beatrice Evans Quattlebaum.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Horse Branch Road, Turbeville, with Elder Shelly Hickson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Carnel Hampton, Edward Roberts and Menyorn Oliver.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Evelyn Merchant

Evelyn Joyce Wilson Tate Merchant, 73, widow of the late Raymond E. Tate Sr. and the late Willie Amos Merchant Sr., died Oct. 18, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Jan. 5, 1933, in Rosehill, Va., she was a daughter of the late James Maylon Wilson and Willa Mae Tucker Wilson. She received her education in the public schools of Rosehill, Va. She accepted Christ as her Savior and was a member of Wilson Grove Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Willie (Diana) Merchant of Sumter and Donald (Addie) Merchant of Dover, Del.; four daughters, Michelle (Herman) Preston and Joyce Merchant, both of Manning, Dorothy Tate (David Johnson) of Lynchburg, and Gladys Merchant of Temple Hills, Md.; two brothers, J.T. Wilson and Lester (Barbara) Wilson, both of Washington, D.C.; five sisters, Arlena (Willie) Spann of Manning, Katherine Tartt of New Britain, Conn., Jewel Lee Plater, Eva L. Holmes and Patricia Wilson, all of Washington, D.C.; 34 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Tate Jr.; two brothers, Chester Wilson and Howard Wilson; and a sister, Violet Thompson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning with Eldress Wessie Gamble, eulogist, assisted by Minister Linda Hilton and Elder Willie Baxter.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Hazeltine S. Lewis

Hazeltine Stone Lewis, 85, widow of John Henry Lewis Sr., died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Oct. 30, 1920, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Ethan Allan and Viola Rhame Stone. She was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for 60 years, as a communion steward for 40 years, treasurer and served on various boards at the church. She decorated the church every Christmas and always handled the church flower arrangements. She did everything that she could to make the presence of the risen Christ realized.

Surviving are two sons, Ethan Allan “Buddy” Lewis and his wife, Linda, of Paxville and John Henry Lewis Jr. of Paxville; a sister, Emma Lee S. Rhame of Paxville; three grandchildren, Jennifer Lewis Jones and her husband, Jay, of Sumter, John Henry “Jay” Lewis III of Paxville and Leslie Ann Lewis of Paxville; three great-grandchildren, John Henry Lewis IV, Tyler Lewis Jones and Dylan Walker Jones.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sue Stone Player, and a daughter-in-law, Mary Faye “Merifaye” Lewis.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at Paxville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Emily Allen officiating.
Burial followed in Paxville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Newell Myers, Stanley Myers, Ernie Broadway, Tommy Rhame, Herman Lewis and Thomas Ham Moore.

Memorials may be made to Paxville United Methodist Church, c/o Harold Corbett, 1130 McLeod Road, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to the Meri-Christmas Fund, c/o Clarendon Hall, P.O. Box 609, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Sarah B. Kennedy

PINEWOOD – Sarah Benjamin Kennedy, 102, entered eternal rest at Hopewell Nursing Home in Sumter, on Oct. 12, 2006.

Born Sept. 28, 1904, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Johnny Benjamin and Serena James Benjamin and the widow of James Kennedy. Sarah was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At a early age, she joined Antioch UME Church in Rimini, where she was the mother of the church.

Survivors are two daughters, Elese Spann of Enfield, N.C., and Mamie (George) Lowery of Pinewood; three brothers, Roosevelt Benjamin and Moses (Kate) Benjamin, both of Thomasville, and Jonathan (Dianne) Benjamin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Ester (James) McCray of Aiken, Camilla Canty of Rimini, and Dessie (Henry) McBride of Sumter; a grandson raised in the home, Joseph W. Kennedy of Pleasantville, N.J.; a nephew raised in the home, Henry William Kennedy of Pinewood; 14 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at Antioch UME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, and assisting, Minister Sam Benjamin.

Burial followed in Antioch Memorial Garden, Rimini.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.
