Chanie W. Pearson

Chanie Wright Pearson entered eternal rest Oct. 10, 2006, at her home after a brief illness.

She was born in Sumter County on Oct. 24, 1916, the daughter of the late William Wright and Rosa Sharper Wright. Chanie was a member of the former Damascus Baptist Church. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County. She was the wife of the late William Pearson Sr.

Survivors are four sons, Jacob (Mary Frances) Pearson of Columbia, David Pearson, William Pearson Jr. and Dan Pearson, all of Sumter; seven daughters, Anna Louise Pearson and Janie Chestnut, both of Sumter, Carrie Bell (Eugene) Freeman of Rimini, Nancy Smith of College Park, Ga., Maggie Pearson and Eulita Pearson of Lakewood, N.J., and Emily Pearson of Manchester, N.J.; four sisters, Alma Wright, Wessie Johnson, Martha Wright and Annie Bell (Thomas) Smith, all of Sumter; one additional daughter-in-law, Lizzie Pearson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 30 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Nathan and Esau Pearson; one granddaughter, Carlita Chestnut; two sisters, Daisy Washington and Addie Mae Miller; three brothers, Jonathan, William and James Wright; a daughter-in-law, Thelma L. Pearson; and one son-in-law, Tommy L. Smith.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at New Bethel Missionary Baptist with the Rev. Willie Wright, pastor, eulogy by the Rev. M.G. Walters, assisting will be the Rev. Friendly Gadson and the Rev. Leroy T. James.

Burial followed in Bethel Cemetery in Sumter.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Plowden

ALBANY, N.Y. — Charles “CB” Plowden, 85, widower of Phyphyne Warley Plowden, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at Samuel Stratton Veteran Center, Albany.

Born Dec. 7, 1920, in the Wilson section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Warren Plowden and Estelle B. Plowden and stepson of the late Jack Samuels. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and joined Cypress Fork AME Church. He served in World War II and was honorably discharged. He retired from the New York Department of Transportation in 1983 after 30 years of service.

Survivors include three sons, James (Bertha) Plowden and Leo Plowden, both of Schenectady, N.Y., and Charles Plowden Jr. of New York, N.Y.; four daughters, Vermell (Harold) Witherspoon and Maybell (Thomas) Cochran, both of Manning, Effie (Elijah) Burgess of New York, N.Y., and Linda Alexander of Manhattan, N.Y.; two sisters, Mamie Pendergrass and Huline Samuels, both of Manning; 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Moultrie Samuels; and two sisters, Effie P. McFadden and Vallie Peay.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at Cypress Fork AME Church in Alcolu, with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor, and the Rev. Franklin McCants officiating, assisted by the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon and the Rev. Jerome McCray.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.

Ty R. Westerman

Ty Russell Westerman, infant son of Travis Westerman and Michele Docherty Pack, died Oct. 1, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Surviving in addition to his parents of Sumter are a half-brother, Ashton Pack of Sumter; maternal grandfather, Alton Docherty Sr. of Sumter; and paternal grandmother, Cheryl Westerman of Manning.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Nat Brown officiating.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Clayden R. Briggs

Clayden Ragin Briggs, 64, widow of Thomas L. Briggs, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, in Summerton.

Born Nov. 5, 1941, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Johnny Book and Helen Canty Ragin. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Historic Liberty Hill AME Church. She was a graduate of Scott’s Branch High School, Summerton. She was employed as a nurse’s aide at Lake Marion Nursing Home.

Survivors include two daughters, Vera Venice (Eleazer) Carter and Shelia Renee (Eddie L.) Riley, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Antonio Riley, Chelsea L. Walker, Angelo L. Riley, and Arias L. Riley.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church in Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. Melvin J. Capers, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

John F. Carter

BRONX, N.Y. – Funeral services for the late John Francis “Mickey” Carter were held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Final resting place was the church cemetery.

Mr. Carter entered into eternal rest on Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Jacobi Medical Center, Bronx.

Born in Clarendon County, on Dec. 27, 1957, he was a son of Janie Robinson Carter and the late Joe Carter Sr. He was the husband of Susan Lawson Carter. He worked at New York City Housing Authority, until his health failed.

He leaves to cherish his memories a wife, Susan Lawson Carter; his mother, Janie Robinson Carter of Summerton; three sons, Marcus and Curtis Lawson, both of Summerton, and Darrell Mivens of Columbia; four brothers, Ready M. Carter and Joe Carter III, both of Bronx, Roosevelt Carter and Anthony Carter, both of Summerton; Samuel Adams, who was reared as a brother; eight sisters, Hattie Robinson, Dana Hawkins and Carol Smiling, all of Manning, Gertrude Watson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Bessie Jackson and Bobbie J. Carter, both of Bronx, Shirley A. Carter and Esther Green, both of Summerton; two grandchildren; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Essie Claire Coker

CADES – Essie Claire McElveen Coker, 67, wife of Thurman L. Coker, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Mrs. Coker was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Edward McElveen Sr. and Rachel Macaulay McElveen. She was a member of Hebron Independent Church, a member of the Ladies Society, and was a church musician.

Survivors include her husband, Thurman L. Coker; one son, Clifton Coker (Lisa) of Manning; two daughters, Cathy Coker Batten (Irv) of Summerville and Connie Coker of Hebron; two grandsons, Phillip Coker of Manning and Irving Batten of Summerville; three granddaughters, Meredith Coker of Manning, Olivia Coker of Manning and Brittany Batten of Summerville.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at Hebron Independent Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hebron Independent Church, 1424 Hebron Road, Cades, S.C. 29518, or to McLeod Hospice House, P.O. Box 100551, Florence, S.C. 29501.

Clifford A. Davis

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Clifford Asbury Davis, 56, died Oct. 9, 2006, at Mercy Hospital, Philadelphia.

Born Feb. 14, 1950, in Philadelphia, he was a son of Mamie Davis Jones and the late Clifford Brown. He was a graduate of Gratz High School, where he received honors. He was employed at Aluminum Shapes for 20 years, where he was a faithful employee.

Survivors besides his mother, Mamie Davis Jones of Manning, include three brothers, Daniel and David Jones of Philadelphia and Harry Jones of Manning; three sisters, Lisa (James) Pue and Daver Jones, both of Manning, and Marie Brown of the U.S. Army.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Robert Wilson, eulogist, Evangelist Diane Wilson, presiding, assisting the Revs. George Windley, Henry McCray and Leroy McElveen.

Burial was in Manning.

Dewey C. Hamilton Sr.

Deacon Dewey C. Hamilton Sr., formerly of Manning, passed into eternal rest on Oct. 18, 2006, at the McCoy Memorial Nursing Center in Bishopville.

Deacon Hamilton, known by his siblings as “Bubba,” was born to the late Charlie and Elease Harvin Hamilton, on March 17, 1919, in Clarendon County, where he grew up in the Mount Zero Church community. As a child, he was nurtured in the Christian faith and as he grew in years, he also grew in wisdom and favor with God. He was a great conversationalist and enjoyed sharing light-hearted moments with his family and friends.

He received his formal training in the public schools of Clarendon County and later married sweetheart Minnie Bell Richburg. They lived together as husband and wife for more than 65 years. To this union was born four wonderful children.

Deacon Hamilton’s hobbies included building things with his hands and working in the soil. He enjoyed growing vegetables, farming and raising livestock. He also enjoyed seeing things grow and using his gifts to make things around him more beautiful.

In the early 1950s, he became a faithful member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and availed himself to serve in varying capacities within this congregation. He spent 42 years as the superintendent of the Sunday school and an almost equally long period of time as the chairman of the deacon board. He worked as the church clerk for a lengthy period as well. He received a number of honors to include a service award for 32 years as secretary of the Black River Union.

He was a member of the Spring Hill Masonic Lodge No. 188 since 1965 and served a three-year tenure as worshipful master. He was also a member of the Spring Hill OES No. 263 and served as worthy patron. He was a community activist and served as a poll manager in Clarendon County for a number of years.

Deacon Hamilton’s memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Minnie Bell Hamilton; four children, Itlean (Willie) Wilson of Bishopville, Preceffeenese Jones of Columbia, Dewey (Jessie) Hamilton Jr. of Valrico, Fla., and Lenwood (Terry) Hamilton of Greer; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Louise H. Black, Minnie H. Canty and Geneva H. Boyd; one brother, Sanders Hamilton; three sisters-in-law; one aunt, Sarah Oliver; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Clyde Miller and Bertha Tucker; and four brothers, Charlie Hamilton, Edward Hamilton, William L. Hamilton and Clarence Hamilton.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Willie Mae Jackson

Willie Mae “Elma” Jackson, 83, widow of Richard Jackson, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at her residence.

Born May 1, 1923, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Louis Brunson Sr. and the late Susie Tindal Brunson.
She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. “Lil’ Ma,” as she was affectionately known, has opened her heart and her home to many through the years. She was a member of Mount Pleasant UME Church and was a faithful member until her health failed.

Those left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life are a son, Elijah (Patricia) Jackson of Florence; a daughter, Lue Bertha Bell of White Plains, N.Y.; a nephew she reared as her own, William (Doris) Dallas of Summerton; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Ms. Jackson were held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Mount Pleasant UME Church with the Rev. Barry Gadsen, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Albert Dean Coker

Albert Dean Coker, age 37, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, in an automobile accident.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of James Albert “J.A.” Coker and Bertha Lou Beard Coker. Mr. Coker attended Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving besides his parents of Turbeville are a wife, Sheila Denise B. Coker of Turbeville; a stepdaughter, Heather Daughrity of Turbeville; and a sister, Amy Coker of Blythewood.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.
