Albert Cook

Albert Cook, 71, husband of Nancy Vernelia McMichael Cook, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at his home in Manning.

Born Aug. 24, 1935, in Lake City, he was a son of the late Jep and Janie Barfield Cook. He was retired from Hercules of West Columbia-Cayce and was of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are three sons, William “Billy” Cook of Turbeville, Wayne Cook of Sharon and Wendell Cook of Scranton; a daughter, Judith Dale Watford of Oates; three sisters, Valerie Barfield and Ola Barfield of Lake City and Inell DuBose of Sumter; nine grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Burial followed in Pine Dale Cemetery in Turbeville.

Pallbearers were Nathaniel Burroughs, Donald Jones, Melvin Jones, Calvin Jones, Harold Hott, Jack Branham Jr., Benji Hall and Jamie Elks.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Church of God.

Doris S. Flagler

Doris Scurry Flagler, 80, wife of Clarence O. Flagler, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.

Born Feb. 18, 1926, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Frank Scurry and Jessie Gibson Scurry. She was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church and a retired bookkeeper for Santee Motor Co.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are one son, Robert W. Flagler of Manning; one brother, Earl F. Scurry of Marion; a sister-in-law, Lillian Scurry of Manning; four grandchildren, Reese Flagler, Rhette Barrett, Jason Flagler, and Brittany Flagler; and one great-granddaughter, Brooklin Rose Flagler.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Flagler.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Reese Flagler, Rhette Barrett, Jason Flagler, Jim Black, Mark Richburg and Craig Richburg.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Midstate S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202-7044.

David Fleming

David “Mickey” Fleming passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born in Lynchburg, on Dec. 26, 1947, he was a son of Rosa Bell Fleming and the late Joe Fleming. He attended the public schools of Lee County. David worked for the City of Sumter until he retired. He was a member of Green Bay Missionary Baptist Church, Lynchburg.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Rosetta Fleming of Lynchburg; his mother, Rosa Bell Fleming of Lynchburg; one daughter, Sharon Primes of Lynchburg; three sons, Marion Fleming of Bishopville, Anthony Fleming of Elliott, and David Fleming Jr. of Sumter; one sister, Sarah Toney of Elliott; four brothers, Harry Fleming, Clyde Fleming and Donald Fleming, all of Lynchburg, and Michael Fleming of Manning; 13 grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, from the Green Bay Missionary Baptist Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Eugene Myers Jr. officiating.

Burial was in the Broad Branch Cemetery in Wisacky.

Jefferson Funeral Home of Lynchburg was in charge of the arrangements.

John E. Geddings

John Edward Geddings, age 61, beloved husband of 36 years to Millie Nesbitt Geddings, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at Palmetto Health Baptist, Columbia.

He was born in Sumter, a son of Carnell Griffin Geddings and the late Eddie Lee Geddings. He was the founder and owner of Dixie Tools and Fasteners. He was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Heather Geddings (Aaron) Poston of Sumter, Monica Geddings (Bobby) Pack of Alcolu and Tristan Geddings of Charleston; three brothers, George Geddings and Archie Geddings, both of Sumter, and Gilbert Geddings of Van Cleave, Miss.; two sisters, Fannie Mae Geddings Ardis and Vivian Geddings Hudson, both of Sumter; and four grandchildren, Ty Poston, Aubrey Pack, Kailee Poston and Bryce Pack.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Maggie Geddings Hudson, Mamie Geddings and Ethel Geddings Meade.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at Calvary Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Authur Sharpe, the Rev. Billy Williams, the Rev. G.W. Harrell and the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.

Burial followed in the Geddings Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, Mass. 01202.

Cecelia Ann C. Hodge

Cecelia Ann “San” Cousar Hodge, 49, wife of Gerald Wayne Hodge, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Jan. 13, 1957, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Allen Nelson and Cecelia Sepe Cousar. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina Sumter with a degree in business and was office manager for Clarendon Insurance Agency. San was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Sumter.

Surviving besides her husband of New Zion are a sister, Marie (Al) Gibbons of Manning; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, in Turbeville Southern Methodist Church with the Rev. Pat Goodwin officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Crowe and the Rev. Robert Korn.

Burial followed in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery in Gable.

Memorials may be made to the Spina Bifida Foundation, 3720 Campus Drive, Suite 200, Newport Beach, Calif. 92660 or to Free Will Baptist Home for Children, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Irene McDowell

Irene Thelma Palmer McDowell, 94, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at Hopewell Nursing Home.

Born in Clarendon County on March 7, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Seward Palmer Sr. and Louise Watson Palmer. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County.

She was united in holy matrimony to Mack Watson and to this union one child, Maxine, was born. After the death of Mr. Watson, she married Mr. Wesley McDowell (deceased).

At an early age, she confessed her love of the Lord and joined Liberty Hill AME Church in Summteron. Upon her moving to Washington, D.C., she joined a sister church and was a lifetime member until her move back to Sumter in 2005.

She leaves to mourn her passing a devoted, loving and caring sister, Mrs. Mae Palmer Neal of Sumter; two grandsons, Janail and Antoine of Maryland; a great-grandson, Antoine I; a special nephew who attended to her like a son, Mr. Lewis Seals of Washington, D.C.; and a host of other nieces, nephews and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Maxine; a granddaughter, Renee; and two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca P. Seals Benbury and Mrs. Louise P. Washington.

Mrs. Irene, as she was affectionately called, a renowned seamstress and dressmaker in the Washington, D.C., area, will be greatly missed.

Services for Mrs. McDowell were held on Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc., with the Rev. M. G. Walters, officiating.

Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul J. Nocchi

Paul John Nocchi, 76, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Sept. 12, 1930, in Morristown, N.J., he was a son of the late Stefano and Lucia Verdi Nocchi. He resided in Netcong and Succasunna, N.J., for 63 years before retiring and moving in 1993 to Manning. He worked for 44 years on the former Delaware Lackawanna, Erie Lackawanna, Conrail and New Jersey Transit Railroad. After retiring, he worked with his wife, Barbara, for two years, running Barbara’s Family Restaurant. While in Manning, he enjoyed working around his church and helping build homes for Habitat for Humanity and with St. Mary’s St. Vincent DePaul Pantry. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elvera Patricia Connell; and a daughter, Barbara Lynne.

Surviving besides his wife of 56 years, Barbara Jeanne Norman Nocchi, of Manning, are four daughters, Deborah (Oscar) Reyes of Mt. Arlington, N.J., Margaret (Ronald) Cristi of Blairstown, N.J., Paula (Skip) Tower of Hopatcong, N.J., Toni Nocchi and Shawn Gifford of Wharton, N.J.; a son, Stefano (Theresa Oliver) Nocchi of Succasunna, N.J.; three sisters, Maria Stalter of Hacketstown, N.J., Rose Taylor of Dover, N.J., and Pauline (Dick) Deise of Union, N.J.; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Puco and James Harris, Nicholas and Andrew Cristi, Dustin and Jennifer Kimball, Elissa Oliver, Paige Nocchi, Jessica Yates and Tiara Nocchi; three great-grandchildren, Trevor Rogers, Kyle and Rylee Harris; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with Father Tom Kingsley officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date in New Jersey.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Summerton.

Lucinda D. Briggs

Lucinda Dubose Briggs, 64, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born June 16, 1942, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late David Dubose and Susannah Ragin Dubose. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. Mrs. Briggs was joined into holy matrimony to the late Bernie Briggs.

Those left to celebrate her life and cherish her memory are a son; Anthony Briggs of Summerton; a daughter, Oelean (Guy) Wiley of Killen, Texas; two sisters, Susan D. Georgia of Summerton and Dorothy Murphy of New York City, N.Y.; two brothers, Thomas Dubose and James Dubose, both of New York City; seven sisters-in-law, seven brothers-in-law; two stepdaughters, Neva Parker and Judy Parker, both of South Carolina; a stepson, Leroy Parker of South Carolina; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Briggs were held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at St. Mark AME Church in Summerton with the Rev. Jeremiah Georgia officiating.

Burial followed in the Ivory Cemetery in Davis Station.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Viola M. Hammitt

Viola Mellerson Hammitt, 91, widow of Robert Hammitt, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility, Silver.

Born April 3, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Carolina Mellerson and Mary Emma McKnight Mellerson. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon and New Hanover counties. She joined St. James AME Church at an early age and accepted Christ as her personal Savior. She served as Sunday school superintendent, senior choir president, and served on the stewardess board and missionary society.

Survivors include one nephew, James (Evonne) Jones of Manning; one grandson reared as her own, Robert Harvin of Columbia; one niece reared as her own, Ida (Bertie) McCray of Summerton; one granddaughter reared as her own, Tracy Harvin of Columbia; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, one nephew reared as her own, two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at St. James AME Church, Potatoe Creek section of Summerton, with the Rev. R.L. Brown Jr., pastor, eulogist, the Rev. Patrick B. Mellerson, presiding, assisted by Evangelist Emma Mellerson and Pastor O’Celia Blue.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.
