Deborah E. Pringle

Deborah Evonne Pringle, 50, died Sept. 24, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born June 6, 1956, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Mary Jane Pringle. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors include a special friend, Willie (WJ) Roth Blackwell; one aunt, Margaret Pringle of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sons, Kendrick Pringle of Myrtle Beach, Antonia Blackwell and Byron C. Blackwell, both of Manning; one daughter, Erica Monique Pringle of Charlotte, N.C.; four brothers, Donald Pringle and Derrick (Wendy) Pringle, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Reece (Sharon) Pringle of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jamal (Mary) Pringle of Charlotte; three sisters, Sally (Raymond) Gardner of Philadelphia, Annette Pringle and Lavern King, both of Manning.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held on Saturday. Sept. 30, 2006, at Chapel AME Church, Paxville, with the Rev. William Scott, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Deloris Gerow serving as eulogist.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Blackwell and Jenkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alva A. Rivers

Alva Augustus Rivers, husband of Annie M. Rivers, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Manning, he was a son of the late Ransom and Beulah Tindal Rivers. He was a lifelong member of Union Station AME Church, where he served in many capacities, including the trustee board and the male chorus. He was educated at Stonehill Elementary School and graduated from Morris College High School. He completed further studies at Morris College. In January 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater Operations during World War II.

In April 1946, he became a partner with his cousin, Oscar Tindal, who had opened the Silver Moon Restaurant in 1932. In 1960, Alva became the sole proprietor of the Silver Moon Café, which became a historic landmark in the community for delicious soul food and a location for friends and groups to gather. The Silver Moon Café, located on Liberty Street, remained open until his retirement in 1998. On Feb. 14, 1963, he married the love of his life, Annie McQuiller, and to this loving union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only brother, Harold Jarred Rivers.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 43 years, Annie M. Rivers of the home; two children by a previous marriage, Gwendolyn Rivers of Columbia and Lorenzo A. (Gaile) Rivers of Sumter; Terri (Tarrance) Rivers-Jones of Sumter and Cassandra Rivers (Antwan) Treadway of Villa Rica, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Justin, Horace, Amanda, Lauren, Antonio, Dorian and Courtney; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Union Station AME Church with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. Friendly Gadson, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Robert L. McCants presiding, the Rev. Joseph B. Johnson Jr. and the Rev. Robert E. Galloway.

Interment followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Christopher S. Voorhees

Christopher Scott Voorhees, 43, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born July 18, 1963, in Boonton, N.J., he was a son of the late Arthur and Betty Ellis Voorhees.

Surviving are a daughter, Lillyanna Voorhees of Manning; three sons, Francis Voorhees, Andrew Voorhees and Jesse Voorhees, all of Manning; a brother, Art Voorhees of New Mexico; a sister, Debbie Voorhees of New Mexico; and a grandson.

Funeral services were private.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

William Walters

William Walters, 76, husband of Katie Tomlin Walters, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at his residence in Alcolu.

Born March 8, 1930, in New York, N.Y., he was a son of the late Jessie Walters and Lillie Kingwood Walters. He received his education in the public schools of New York and graduated from Harren High School. He worked for the U.S. Navy and served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He retired in 1985 as a salesman of real estate. He was a member of Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the male chorus.

Survivors besides his wife, Katie Tomlin Walters of the home, include four stepsons, Marvin Tomlin of Washington, D.C., Stanley (Mia) Hodge and Pastor Steven (Sherlene) Hodge, both of Bloomfield, Conn., and Rodney (Jamie) Hodge of Glestonbury, Conn.; one brother, Freddie Walters of Alcolu; one sister, Rosa Spann of Wyandance, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis Brock, pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Steve Hodge.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Deborah L. Bass

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Deborah Elizabeth “Debbie” Lawson Bass entered into eternal rest Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, in Brooklyn. She was the daughter of the late Curley McConico and Elizabeth Lawson McConico.

She was a graduate of Franklin K. Lane High School, Brooklyn. She was employed by the New York City Board of Education for 24? years as a clerical associate.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Moses Lawson.

She leaves to mourn her passing, a sister, Helen Brown of Baltimore, Md.; a nephew, Danathan Brown; aunts, uncles, great-aunts, and a host of close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at St. Phillip RMUE Church, River Road community, Summerton, with the Rev. Warren Hatcher, pastor, officiating.

Final resting place was the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

G. Harold Furse Jr.

George Harold Furse Jr., 79, husband of English Chitwood Furse, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born March 30, 1927, in Summerton, he was a son of the late George Harold Furse and the late Ruth Thompson Furse. He was a 1950 Clemson University graduate, a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher, a founding board member of Laurence Manning Academy, a lifelong member of IPTAY, a Clarendon County IPTAY representative and an avid Clemson supporter. He was a retired highway contractor.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are two sons, George Harold “Fuzzy” (Lauri) Furse III, and William Chitwood “Bill” (Judy) Furse of Manning; and five grandsons, Thomas English (Elisa) Furse of Goose Creek, Mark Lauriston Furse of Columbia, Ladson Blythe Furse of Manning, William Chitwood Furse Jr. of Clemson, and John Louden Furse of Manning.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Randolph Furse.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in The Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Grandsons, along with Ralph Ferrell Cothran Jr., served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Franklin Dozier

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Franklin “Big Bubba” Dozier, 61, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at Manhattan Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, New York.

Born Aug. 12, 1945, in the Sugar Hill section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Essic “Sonny” Dozier and Estelle Johnson Dozier. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He accepted Christ as his Savior in his youth and joined Progressive Church of Jesus Christ. He was a cab driver in New York.

Survivors include one son, Franklin Dozier Jr. of New York; two daughters, Rosa (John) Coard of Manning and Zazia Dozier of New York; three brothers, Nathaniel (Lila) Dozier and Leroy Conyers, both of New York, and Raleigh Dozier of Manning; three sisters, Dora (Charlie) Mack of Las Vegas, Nev. and Esther Mae Dozier and Annie Dell Dozier, both of Manning; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at Progressive Church of Jesus Christ in Manning, with Bishop James B. Wilson, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in St. Matthews Cemetery.

Lucille T. Wilson

Lucille Thompson Wilson, 48, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005. She was born Sept. 9, 1957 in Manning, a daughter to Almberteen Martin Thompson and the late Mr. Ulysses Thompson Sr.

Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and she was a graduate of Manning High School. She was self-employed for numerous years as a domestic housekeeper. She was a member of Briggs Chapel Baptist Church where she sang with the adult choir and was a member of the usher board.

Survivors include a son, Henry James Lee Wilson Jr. of Manning; three daughters, Janice Denise Wilson, Angela Genice Wilson and Jennifer Ann Wilson, all of Manning; a brother, Ulysses (Rethea) Thompson Jr. of Manning; four sisters, Ella Goins, Minnie (Kenny) Neal, Barbara (Charles) Wilkes, all of Sumter, and Faye (Michael) Ragin of Paxville.

Funeral services, officiated by the Revs. Bobby McDonald, Dr. C. Richburg, E. Richburg, evangelist, Herman Gibson Jr. and Robert Gibson, were held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005 at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Manning.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

John Reid Quattlebaum

John Reid Quattlebaum, 21 months old, beloved son of G. Reid and Stacey Ann Karpook Quattlebaum and beloved brother of Anna Kathryn Quattlebaum, died Sept. 13, 2005, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

John Reid was the loving grandson of John and Pat Karpook and Glenn and Donna Quattlebaum; the dear great-grandson of Doris Karpook, Phyllis Campbell and Mr. and Mrs. V.K. Quattlebaum; and the dear nephew of Jenny Karpook, Alicia and Jeff Redifer and Kathryn and Shaun Richburg.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, John Karpook; and his great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Campbell and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur M. Felder Sr.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Manning. The Rev. Robert Alderman will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the National Children’s Cancer Society, 1015 Locust, Suite 600, St. Louis, Mo. 63101.

Cody Palmer

Dakota Cole “Cody” Palmer, age 9, son of Louis Palmer and Monica Victoria “Vickie” Evans Palmer, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, in Sumter.

Born Sept. 21, 1995, in Newport, Tenn., he was a third-grade student at Cherryvale Elementary School in Sumter.

Surviving besides his father of Sevierville, Tenn., and mother of Sumter, are a sister, Chasity Jordan of Sumter; grandparents, Edna Shoun Palmer of Newport, Paul Palmer of Sevierville and Claire Hemingway Lewandowski of Manning.

Cody will be missed by many loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at Brown Funeral Home in Newport.

Burial followed in Union Cemetery in Tennessee.
