Born in Union in a log cabin on the site of the present Union H.S., to James and Pearl Wood Charles, he retired as a C.P.O. from the Navy, having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. BISHOPVILLE — Funeral services for Robert Calvin (Rob Jr.) McCutchen, Jr., 83, who died Dec. 19, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 from the Bishopville Presbyterian Church. Rev. Scott Bowerman will officiate. Burial will be in the Presbyterian Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 pm at the funeral home.
Rob was born in Lee County, a son of the late Robert C. McCutchen, Sr. & Lena Rivers Johnson McCutchen. He had retired from the Post Office, was a volunteer with the Bishopville Fire Dept. for 70 years, a life long member and Elder of the Presbyterian Church, active in the Men of the Church, a veteran of WW II, a member of the American Legion and a Mason.
Surviving are 3 daughters: Lena Rivers McCutchen, Leila E. McCutchen, Sarah R. McCutchen, all of Bishopville; son and daughter-in-law: Robert C. (Julie) McCutchen, III, Hartsville; 2 grandchildren: Jay and Amy Beth McCutchen, Hartsville; 1 brother: Francis W. (Pete) McCutchen, Mamaroneck, New York; 1 sister: Sara K. Hagood Richardson
HEATH SPRINGS — Mr. Hagood O’Neil “Toby” Richardson aka “the Poppy Man,” age 88, of 4429 Kershaw Camden Hwy., Heath Springs, died Monday, December 20, 2004, at his home. Born September 18, 1916, in Marion County, he was a son of the late Walter O’Neil and Maggie Collins Richardson and was married to Betty Beckham Richardson. He worked from 1933 to 1941 at the old Pavilion in Myrtle Beach. He was a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1950 where he was a member of Pi Sigma Etta, an honorary fraternity and was licensed in 1951. Mr. Richardson later worked in the Pollution and Water Control division of DHEC from which he retired in 1977. During his work with DHEC he had additional studies at USC, U of GA, Winthrop and Sacramento State College. Mr. Richardson helped organize the 1st Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Dept. in 1955. He was selected by Senator Roddy to organize the 1st Lancaster County operated ambulance service. He taught classes for the Red Cross in First Aid and also in shelter management for Civil Defense during the Cold War. Mr. Richardson was a member of Pleasant Hill ARP Church, where he was deacon, elder and elder emeritus, was past president, secretary and treasurer of The Lions Club District C, was a member of Abney Masonic Lodge, Kershaw, was a WW II U.S. Navy veteran and was past commander of the American Legion.
Mr. Richardson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Beckham Richardson of Heath Springs, 3 sons, Neil Richardson of Anderson, Kim Richardson of Mt. Pleasant and Van Richardson of Kershaw; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Mary Katherine Fox of Aiken; 1 brother, James Lee Richardson of Charleston.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22 from Pleasant Hill ARP Church by the Rev. Dwight Pearson. Interment with military honors conducted by The American Legion will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21.

Mrs. Pendergrass died Thursday, December 16, 2004. Born in DeFuniak Springs, FL, she was the daughter of the late McClendon and Rosena Morris. She was a member of Northminster and the United Presbyterian Women. She was a retired teacher from Richland School District One; was a member of Jack & Jill, Inc. and Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., YWCA, the Moles and past board member of Sister Care.
Surviving are children, LTC. (Ret.) “Pete” (Sandra) Pendergrass, Jr. and Dr. Marnette P. McKinney; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
