John Lee McCray

John Lee McCray, 60, died Sept. 19, 2005, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, on June 21, 1945, he was a son of the late Sampson McCray Sr. and Elizabeth Capers McCray.

He was a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. McCray was employed by the CLM Warehouse in Sumter and later for the Florence Concrete Construction Co., where he worked for 30 years. He was a member of the International Order of Free and Accepted Masons, Masonic Lodge No. 29.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert, David, James Hugh and Sam Jr.; and three sisters, Roberta, Beulah and Pearl.

Survivors included two sons, Sammie L. (Frances) McCray of Sumter and Edward L. (Stephanie) McCray of Columbia; five sisters, Katherine Moore of Sumter, Lauretha (Benjamin) Anderson of Lynchburg, Sarah Hollomon, Ossie M. Kidd and Mary (James) Chandler, all of Philadelphia; four brothers, Willie Albert (Eloiuse) McCray of Newport News, Va., James (Elizabeth) McCray, Joseph (Mattie) McCray, and Henry McCray, all of Sumter; one grandchild, E’Dasia K. McCray; and one aunt, Lillian Capers.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at the Salem Missionary Baptist Church, located in Sumter, with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. N. LaMonte Newsome, officiating and assisted by the Rev. Alfred Bradley and the Rev. Devon Right.

Interment followed at the Old McFadden Cemetery in Turbeville.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Marian H. Jordan

Marian Holladay Jordan, 65, of Durham, died early Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Durham Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Jordan was born in Manning, the daughter of the late William Herbert and Nellie Tobias Holladay. She was employed by GTE prior to her retirement. Mrs. Jordan was a member of Union Methodist Church in Wilson.

She was preceded in death by three children and a sister, Merifaye Lewis.

Mrs. Jordan is survived by her husband, Charles “Charlie” Jordan of Durham; sisters, Carolyn Spigner of Columbia, Judy Rogers of Manning and Joyce Hardy of Brewington; brother, Wayne Holladay of Manning; adopted sisters, Lynn and Renay Holladay; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005 in Union Methodist Church Cemetery in Wilson with the Rev. Miriam Hadden officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory of Manning was in charge of local arrangements.

Louis A. Holliday

The Rev. Dr. Louis A. Holliday, 80, husband of Mary Richburg Holliday, died Sept. 14, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Aug. 14, 1925, in Manning, he was a son of the late Grant and Octance Nelson Holliday. The Rev. Holliday attended the public schools of Manning and Bronx, N.Y. After graduation from high school, he enrolled at New York University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Further study was done at Shelton Bible College, Bronx, and Hampton Institute.

In 1955, the Rev. Holliday received the call to the ministry and was licensed to preach in 1963. For a number of years, he served as an associate pastor at Victory Baptist Church in Bronx and he was the founder of Soundview Avenue Baptist Church, Bronx, in 1963.

He was a life member of NAACP and also gave years of dedicated service with the juvenile counsel. He was a recipient of numerous awards and citations for his distinguished service.

Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Raymond L. (Theresa) Holliday of Victoria, Va., and Joseph (Veronia) Williams of New Rochelle, N.Y.; two brothers, Maceo Holliday of New York and Lincoln Holliday of Clinton, N.C.; 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Rigby Holliday, Calvin Holliday and William Holliday; and three sisters, Rebecca Taylor, Lucile Solomon and Florence Pelerkin.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. G.P. Windley, Dr. Ashley Vaughn, Dr. W.T. Johnson, the Rev. Mitchell Adger, the Rev. Henry McCray and the Rev. Leroy McElveen.

Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of services.

James T. Floyd

James Ted Floyd, age 74, died Sept. 19, 2005, at his residence, after an illness.

Born in Florence, he was a son of the late James Floyd and Celia Dorrell Floyd. Mr. Floyd was a retired contractor and was a member of the Pinedale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Roberta Wilkes, Beatrice Odom and May Bell Coker; and two brothers, Paul Floyd and Moscoe Floyd.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvis L. Floyd of the home; four daughters, Wanda K. Mason of Murrells Inlet, Trevia T. Griffin of Pinewood, Sandra D. Coker of Turbeville and Miranda “Tootsie” Marsh of Lake City; one son, Mitchell A. Floyd; one sister, Lilly Ard of Kingstree; and one brother, Charles Floyd of Turbeville; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in the Pinedale Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial followed in the Bethany Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Vander Fleming Jr.

Vander Fleming Jr., widower of Nancy Dupree Fleming, died Sept. 19, 2005, at Lake Moultrie Nursing Home, St. Stephens.

Born July 4, 1910, in the Biggers community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Vander Fleming Sr. and Anna Dupree Fleming. He received his education at Biggers School in Clarendon County. He joined Biggers AME Church at an early age and worked diligently in the church, serving as a trustee, on the finance committee and the homecoming committee. He was a self-employed farmer as well as retired from Georgia-Pacific Lumber Division of Alcolu.

Survivors include four sons, John (Berneather) Dupree of Washington, D.C., Vander Shakespeare (Gwendolyn) Fleming of Manning, Joe Louis Fleming of Forestville, Md., and Walter Fleming of Clinton, Md.; one daughter, Helena Fleming of the home; one brother, Booker T. (Everlena) Fleming of Manning; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005 at Biggers AME Church in Manning, with the Rev. Andrew Jordan, pastor, officiating, assisting the Revs. James Carter, Charles Smith and Mattie Mouzon.

Burial was in Muldrow Cemetery.

Ola Mae S. Evans

Ola Mae Smith Evans, 81, widow of Nuel Evans, died Sept. 16, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born April 25, 1924, in the Hallie Town section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Isaiah Smith and Lucille Blackwell Smith. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and New York City. While living in New York, she joined St. Luke AME Church, serving on the chancel choir, the nurses unit and the culinary committee. She was also a professional caterer. In 1998, she returned home and joined Greenhill Missionary Baptist Church, where she was active with the pastor’s aide ministry.

Survivors include two aunts, Rachel (James) Cheek and Dorothy Allen of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a special cousin, Sarah (Ezekiel) Bracey; and a devoted caregiver, Eartha Williams of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with Bishop Dr. Deborah W. Belton, eulogist.

Burial was in Greenhill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Brianna S. Brailsford

Baby Brianna Shappiah Brailsford, 1 month old, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

Born Aug. 17, 2006, at Palmetto Health Richland, she was a daughter of Brandon and Kendra Garrard Brailsford.

Survivors besides her parents include her grandparents, Kenneth Garrard of Seaside, Calif., Gloria Gene Moses of Augusta, Ga., and Garrard and Linda Brailsford of Summerton; great-grandparents, Minnie Green of Summerton, Solomon and Elease McBride of Manning and Jerry and Carrie Brailsford of Summerton; and three brothers, Derrick Stover, Braylan and Christain Brailsford, all of the home.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with Minister Tyrone Brailsford officiating, assisting Pastors Queen McKnight and Andrew Wilson.

Burial was in Mount Hope Baptist Church, Pinewood.

Gloris Ragin C. Crawford

MIRAMAR, Fla. – Gloris Ragin Conyers Crawford, wife of Edward Crawford, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at her residence in Miramar, Fla.

Born Oct. 30, 1944, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Johnny Ragin and Bernice Crosby Ragin. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. Prior to retirement, she was employed with Sears, Roebuck and Co. and was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

She was first married to the late Mood Conyers Sr. of Clarendon County and later to Edward Crawford of Miami, Fla.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Crawford of Miramar; three sons, Melvin Conyers, Mood Conyers Jr. and Russell Conyers; one daughter, Johnnie Mae (David) Bennett of Pembrok Pines, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Kaneshia Crawford of Miramar; four brothers, Ernest (Vicki) Ragin of Glencove, N.Y., Johnny Ragin of Portland, Ore., Darrell (Joy) Ragin and Elvis Ragin, both of Broward County, Fla.; five sisters, Margie (Nevelle) Graham of Broward County, Gussie Ragin of Miami, Gardenia Ragin (Ray) Logan of Paxville, Sheryl (Phil) Fusaro of Sacramento, Calif., and Alberta Church of Conyers, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Miami.

Burial was in Fred Hunter Memorial Park, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Royal Funeral Home of Miami was in charge of services.

Sandra Lee Schindele Matthews

Sandra Lee Schindele “Sandee” Matthews, 67, wife of John Putnam Matthews and longtime resident of Wyboo Plantation, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 24, 1939 in Nampa, Idaho, she was a daughter of the late Elmer F. and Leola C. Stanley Schindele. She was a Methodist, a retired administrative assistant for the National Geographic Society, a graduate of the University of Washington, founder of the Wyboo Plantation Women’s Club, an avid reader, a member of the BookEnder’s Club in Manning, and a volunteer at the Harvin Clarendon County Library.

Surviving are her husband of Manning; and a brother, Stanley E. Schindele of Boise, Idaho.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the residence, 131 Ridge Lake Drive, Manning.

Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Harvin Clarendon Library, 215 N. Brooks Street, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.
