Sammie McConico Jr.

Sammie McConico Jr. died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston.

Born in Clarendon County, on March 27, 1942, he was a son of the late Sammie McConico Sr. and Lucille Jackson McConico. In his early youth, he attended Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal Church in Rimini. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed as a furniture builder at Carolina Furniture Co.

He leaves to mourn his passing, three brothers, David (Lucille) McConico of Pinewood, Paul (Jessie) McConico of Warrenton, Ga., and Calvin (Vern) McConico of Thomasville, N.C.; three sisters, Louise McConico of Pinewood, Sadie (James) Savage of Jamaica, N.Y., and Betty Jenkins of Bronx, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jonathan Smith.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Norma Mae M. Drake

Norma Mae McElrath Drake, 65, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 22, 1938, in Battle Creek, Mich., she was a daughter of the late Henry Nickerson Schaffer and the late Helen Irene Lanbridge Schaffer. She was a retired cook and was of the Church of God faith.

Surviving are a son, Theron Lee (Joanne) Drake of Manning; a daughter, Alice (John) McKenzie of Texas; two brothers, Rex Stow of Anderson, Texas, and Bobby Schaffer of Michigan; two sisters, Jackie Grubbs of Houston, Texas, and Norine Drake of Indiana; five grandchildren; one step granddaughter.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. William K. Cribb officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Otto Rapley Jr.

Otto Rapley Jr., 62, died Jan. 5, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born March 13, 1941, in New York, he was a son of the late Otto Rapley Sr. and Johnnie Mae Rapley. Otto graduated from St. Paul’s College, Lawrenceville, Va., and Columbia University School of Social Work. He was employed with General Motors in New York and continued with General Motors in car sales. After relocating to South Carolina, he was employed with Road House Customs, Sumter. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the NAACP.

Survivors include one son, Michael Rapley of Bronx, N.Y.; one daughter, Sonya Monifa (Eric) Travis of Peekskill, N.Y.; one sister, Marilyn Pam of Elmsford, N.Y.; and one grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Fleming and Delaine Chapel, Boyce Street, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn and Daniel McGhaney.

Burial will be in White Plains, N.Y.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning and Andre F. Baker Funeral Home of White Plains, NY were in charge of arrangements.

Dorrell Hilton

Dorrell Hilton, 47, companion of Patricia Coard, died Dec. 30, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born March 31, 1957, in Manning, he was a son of Ethel L. Hilton and the late Nathaniel Williams. He was reared by his maternal grandparents, the late Louis James Hilton and Bessie Tucker Hilton. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a graduate of Manning High School Class of 1976. In his youth, he joined Shiloh AME Church in Foreston. He was a former employee of J.C. Witherspoon Inc.

Survivors besides his companion, Patricia Coard of the home, and his mother, Ethel H. Johnson of Charleston, include one son, Roy Coard of the home; a grandson, Zisha Coard of the home; one daughter, Marissa L. Hilton of the home; five brothers, Thaddeus Johnson of Summerville, his twin, Carrell (Gail) Hilton of Foreston, Ronald Holmes, Donald (Melody) Holmes and Alonzo (Cathy) Holmes, all of Charleston; two sisters, Juliet (Charles) White of Summerville and Sgt. 1st Class Catherine Holmes of Mannheim, Germany; aunts and uncles who loved him as a brother, Willie Mae Hilton of Philadelphia, Lottie (Lionel) Marco of New Orleans, Lauretta Hilton and Carolyn Hilton, both of Manning, Louis (Betty) Hilton of Foreston and Ernest Hilton of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Deloris Gerow, pastor of Shiloh AME Church, Foreston, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon and the Rev. Geraldine Houston.

Burial was in Junky Yard Cemetery, Foreston.

Dale J. Clark

Dale James Clark, 60, husband of Bonnie Kruse Clark, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, in St. George.

Born June 2, 1944, in Spencer, Iowa, he was a son of the late Kerry Victor and Rosella Martin Clark. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, served five tours of duty in Vietnam and was wounded in action. He was a retired machinist and disabled army veteran, and worked for Star-Flo for 10 years and Lyles Express. Mr. Clark was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are two daughters, Annette (Wayne) Haselden of Manning, and Nadine Twite of Council Bluff, Iowa; three stepsons, Dennis (Missy) Gardner and Mike (Bonnie) Gardner, both of Concord, N.C., and Kenny Gardner of Bangor, Maine; a brother, Merel (Jan) Clark of Lake Park, Iowa; two sisters, Candace Cable of Milford, Iowa, and Joyce (Allen) Trojan of Spencer, Iowa; five granddaughters; nine grandsons; three great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters; and many friends of the community. He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Private funeral services were held.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie F. Wright

WEST COLUMBIA – Johnnie Eldrick Wright, 72, died Dec. 22, 2004, in West Columbia.

Born Sept. 12, 1932, in Bishopville, he was a son of the late Robert Wright and Essie Scarborough. Johnnie was educated in the public schools of Lee County and spent his professional career as a steel worker until his retirement. He was united in holy matrimony to Olar Mae Lunn.

Survivors include five sons, Nathaniel Wright of West Columbia, Edward Wright of Atlanta, Richard Wright of Philadelphia, John Wright Jr. of Charlotte, and Charles Wright of Jacksonville, Fla.; four daughters, Joann Wright Austin and Lorraine Wright, both of Atlantic City, N.J., Betty Rex of Whiteville, N.C., and Linda Wright Warren of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Essie Mae Starks of Manning and Louise Wright of Manning; 35 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at St. Mark Baptist Church, Bishopville, with the Rev. W.C. Wilkes officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Jones Metropolitan Funeral Home, West Columbia, was in charge of arrangements.

Louis Henry Jr.

Louis Henry Jr., 61, husband of Mary Lee Ned Henry, died Dec. 25, 2004, in Greeleyville.

Born July 1, 1942, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Louis Henry Sr. and Laura Pompey Henry. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Green Hill AME Church. Green Hill later merged with Shiloh AME Church, where he served on the trustee board. He was a former employee of Sunbeam/Air Cap Corp. for 24 years. He presently was owner-operator of Louis Place in Greeleyville.

Survivors besides his wife of 40 years, Mary L. Henry of the home, include three sons, Dennis Henry of the home, Stanley (Stacey) Henry of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Louis (Towanda) Henry III of Covington, Ga.; one daughter, Cheryl (Cleveland) Lewis of Florence; four brothers, JC (Joann) Henry and Joseph Alfred (Loretta) Henry, both of Manning, Joe (Emma) Henry of Sarasota, Fla., and Calvin (Johnetta) Henry of Valdosta, Ga.; three sisters, Margaret (Lawrence) Stringfellow of Baltimore, Md., Barbara (Bobby) Brewington of Anderson and Sandra Reardon of Columbia; five grandchildren; three aunts; a mother-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the Manning Junior High School with the Rev. R.L. Brown officiating, assisted by the Revs. Deloris Gerow, Nathaniel Edward, Manuel Fogle, Geraldine Houston, Sam Miller and Evangelists Elouise Pompey, Rosa Rogers and Effie Hilton.

Burial was in Junky Yard Cemetery, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Kolb Drose

Margaret Kolb “Boots” Drose, 90, widow of Joe Oliver Drose, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at her home in Manning.

Born March 8, 1914, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Jeter Rollin and Anna Rebecca Whilden Kolb. She was a charter member of Santee Baptist Church serving as church clerk for over forty years. She served her church faithfully since 1955. She was a charter member of the Wyboo Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are three sons: Joe Drose and wife, Peggy, of Pineville, Frank Drose and wife, Rose, of Manning, and Don Drose and wife, Rachel, of Manning; one sister: Evelyn Barwick of Pinewood; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, in the Santee Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Sumter.

Memorials may be sent to “Camp Longridge,” in care of Santee Baptist Church, 1057 Davis St., Manning, S.C., 29102, Freewill Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C., 29162, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Marjorie Brannon

Marjorie Brannon, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Kynesville, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Thad H. Branning and the late Ada Stephens Branning.

Mrs. Brannon was a retired cashier with Speedway Convenience Store.

Surviving are three sons, Carl D. Brannon and Jack R. Brannon, both of Florida, and Larry R. Brannon of Sumter; a daughter, Deborah Essig of Summertown, Tenn.; two brothers and one sister, all of Florida.

No local services were held.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Phoebe Davis

Phoebe Davis, 94, widow of Frank “Buddy” Davis, died Dec. 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Jan. 11, 1910, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Walter Epps Sr. and Lue Harvin Epps and stepdaughter of Annie White Epps. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and she was a member of Harmony Elizabeth Presbyterian Church (USA), Red Hill Chapter No. 157 OES, YMCA Lodge and Manning Branch NAACP.

Survivors include three daughters, Ada (Wade) Smith of New Zion, Carol (Connell) Nicholson of Jamaica, N.Y., and Mattie (Leroy) Newman of Jamaica, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; Linda (Thomas) Henry of Foreston; and Lee Ernest (Rose) Epps of Alcolu.

Funeral services were held on Thursdaym Dec. 30, 2004 at Harmony Elizabeth Presbyterian Church (USA), Alcolu, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton and Bishop Leroy Newman.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Janet L. Duke

Janet Latta Duke, 63, died Wednesday, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Duke was born in Michigan, a daughter of Gertrude Van Dyke Latta and James B. Latta. She was educated in Georgetown schools and was a homemaker. Mrs. Duke was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church and the Women of the Church. She was a poll manager for the Workman Precinct for 32 years.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Allen Duke of New Zion; two daughters, Wyndie D. Yarborough and husband, Tracy, of Coward and Tammie D. Taylor and husband, Terry, of New Zion; one son, Tim A. Duke and wife, Mary, of New Zion; grandchildren, Brandon M. Taylor, Brittany A. Taylor, Katie L. Yarborough, Kelsey D. Yarborough and Robbie A. Duke; one sister, Kay Kornahrens of Summerville; one brother, Ronnie Latta of Tega Cay.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in the Midway Presbyterian Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church or Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Williamsburg Funeral Home of Kingstree was in charge of the arrangements.
