Wade McFaddin

Wade McFaddin graced the earth with his presence on Aug. 11, 1938, in the town of New Zion. He died on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005.

He was educated in the public school system of Clarendon County. After relocating to New Jersey roughly 45 years ago, he journeyed into the fencing industry, eventually bringing his own dream to fruition, McFaddin Fence, which is still a flourishing corporation.

Wade was predeceased by one child, Daisy McFaddin.

He leaves to revere his fond memory, his beloved wife, Eather McFaddin; children, Rebecca, Wade Jr., Hakim and Rahim McFaddin; grandchildren, Takeya, Aaron, Saeed, Kizzy, Michael, Yasmine McFaddin, Lamar and Derrick White; three great-grandchildren, Khannisha, Saeed McFaddin Jr. and Napoleon Metz; one grandson-in-law, Abdullah Meyers; two brothers, Stanley Kennedy and Ernest Howard; sisters, Mary Ann Williams, Sadie Bryant, Maggie Forman, Carolyn Kennedy, Edith Howard and Delores Coleman.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at Howard Chapel AME Church in New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Old McFadden Cemetery in Turbeville.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Julius L. Morris

Julius Levie Morris, 85, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in New Zion, he was a son of the late Levie James Morris and the late Carrie Hagen Morris. Mr. Morris was a member of New Zion Methodist Church and attended Grace Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. While stationed in New York, he received his local preacher’s license and became assistant and youth leader at a large church there. He was also a chaplain’s assistant in the Navy. For many years, he ministered to the airmen of Shaw Air Force Base and taught adult Sunday school class for 23 years at Lemira Presbyterian Church. He was retired from Sumter Petroleum/Palmetto Gas Co.

Surviving are a sister, Vivian Lavender of Georgia, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Van Daley and Lou Ellen Nesbitt; and a brother, John W. Morris.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at the New Zion Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Elaine Roberts

Elaine Roberts was born on Sept. 16, 1964, in Baltimore, Md., later in life the family moved to Philadelphia. She was the second oldest of four children born to Mitchell and Esther Roberts.

She graduated from Strawberry Mansion Junior Senior High School in 1982.

In May of 1989, Elaine attended the Community College of Philadelphia, where she acheived her lifelong dream of becoming a certified registered nurse.

From 1989 to 2003, she was employed by Mercy Hospital and Mercy Home Care of Philadelphia before moving to Manning, where she was employed by Clarendon Memorial Hospital. She has been in the nursing profession for the past 15 years until her untimely death.

On Wednesday night, Aug. 24, 2005, God Almighty called his servant – Elaine Roberts – to rest from her labors at her home in Manning.

Elaine leaves to cherish fond memories, a devoted companion of 13 years, Bobby Warthern of Philadelphia; parents, Mitchell (Esther) Roberts of Manning; three brothers, Robert (Joann) Pearson of Manning, Michael (Keisha) Roberts of Philadelphia, and Willie (Keisha) Roberts of Denver; a sister, Linda Roberts (Rudy) of Philadelphia; three uncles, Willie Roberts, Deacon Johnnie (Cynthia) Pearson and Henry Lesaine; four aunts, Susie Mae Johnson, Janie Roberts, Ida Mae Hilton and Isabelle Leaine; three great-grandaunts, Lenora Dingle, Annie Bell Wright, Bessie Felder and Mamie Pearson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at the Springhill AME Church in the Davis Crossroad community of Summerton.

Officiating ministers were the Rev. D.N.B. McCloud, pastor, the Rev. Eddie Lesaine, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Mitchell Adger and the Rev. Gary Miller.

Burial was on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at Springhill AME Church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home, LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Shirley C. Whack

MIAMI — Shirley Cain Whack, 76, died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at her residence in Miami.

She was born June 10, 1929, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Cain and Janie Moore Cain.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at Samuels Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Ronnie Brown officiating.

Burial was in the Ivory Cemetery in the Davis Station community of Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Alice G. White

Alice G. White, 81, widow of Wilford G. White Jr., died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at her residence in Manning.

Born Feb. 11, 1924, in Reidsville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Onnie and Florence Carter Galloway. Her early education began in the Rockingham County public schools. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School, she attended A&T State University and later transferred to South Carolina State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. She was a dedicated member of Trinity AME Church, serving in many capacities. She was employed by Clarendon County School District 2 and retired in 1986 after more than 30 years of service.

Survivors include two sons, Wendell White of the home and Wilford (Gladys) White III of College Park, Ga.; two daughters, Linda (Lyman) Foster of Orangeburg and Joyce (Bill) Davis of Mitchellville, Md.; one sister, Sarah Ann (Jack) Winchester of Reidsville; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Trinity AME Church in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

D. Lewis Stokes

BISHOPVILLE — D. Lewis Stokes, 62, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident on U.S. 15 South, Sumter.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late Coley Lewis Stokes and the late Olivia Smith Stokes. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a member of the 1st Air Calvary Division, 82nd Airborne. He was an electrician.

Survivors include his loving companion, Ellen Tidwell of Summerton; a daughter, Kimberly Judy of Sumter; a son, Corey Stokes of Bishopville; two sisters, Viva Davis and her husband, Eugene, and Virginia Little and her husband, Bobby, all of Bishopville; a brother, Dean Stokes and his wife, Terri, of Newberry; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at Salem Church with the Rev. William Lewis officiating.

Burial was in the Salem Church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202-7044.

Thelma S. Riley

Thelma Sweat Riley, 79, wife of Stephen Riley, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Jan. 20, 1927, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Luetisha Briggs Sweat and stepdaughter of the late Lucious Sweat. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Mount Zero Baptist Church. After marriage, she moved her membership to Zion Hill Baptist Church, serving as a member of the Land H Club and gospel choir until her health failed.

Survivors besides her husband, Stephen Riley of the home, include her mother-in-law, Louise Riley of Sumter; three daughters, Ella (Otis) Hodge of Sumter, Christine (Jasper) Richburg and Bertha (fiancé, Jeremiah Conyers), all of Manning; three sisters, Willie Mae Sweat, the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth (Dr. Cokley) Richburg, all of Manning, and Remona Murray of Maryland; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville, with the Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, the Rev. Dr. Derrick L. Grant presiding, assisting the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Amos Hatcher and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Pinewood.

Joseph Gass

Joseph Gass, 74, husband of Erlinda Muldrow Gass, died Aug. 29, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 27, 1932, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Eva Robinson Gass and Ted McMillian. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County. Mr. Gass confessed Christ and joined Salem Baptist Church. He retired from Harvin Choice Meats after 33 years of dedicated service. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing the blues on his guitar.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Erlinda M. Gass of the home; six daughters, Natasha Gass of Sumter, Josephine (Willie) Bamberg of Spartanburg, Ernestine Singleton of Manning, Joan (Joseph) Smith of Wedgefield, Dorothy (William) Boyer and Georgia D. Cook, both of Sumter; 12 sons, Ravenal Gass and Stewart Muldrow, both of Sumter, Joseph Gass Jr. and Clyde Gass of Baltimore, Md., Billy (Sharon) Gass of Paterson, N.J., Johnny (Barbara) Gass, Larry Gass, Ernest Gass, Randy Gass and David Gass, all of Sumter, Leverne (April) Muldrow of Stone Mountain, Ga. and Jerome Muldrow of Turbeville; three sisters, Mary Cato, Evester Wells and Eva (Raymond) Shivers; four brothers, James (Evelyn) Gass, Eugene (Merly) Gass, Hamp (Maggie) McMillian and Buster McMillian; mother-in-law, Miguela B. Muldrow; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Gass and James Gass.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 320 Fulton St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. N. Lamonte Newsome, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister Daryl Washington, the Rev. Daryl McGhaney and Minister Willie Bamberg.

Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Ada C. Dority

Ada Capell Dority, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at a local nursing facility.

Born in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Capell and the late Lonie Godwin Capell.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Cheryl Watkins of Cheraw; four nieces, Judy Hershberger and Vivian Browder, both of Sumter, Earliene Tennant of Summerton, and Linda Gordley of Georgetown, Ky.; six nephews, James Caples, John Stephens, Cary Stephens Sr., Mark Yarborough, Cale Yarborough and Eric Yarborough, all of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by a son, Willie James Dority; her former husband, Horace Dority; two sisters, Bernice C. Stephens and Grace C. Yarborough; and two brothers, Lawrence Capell and Jessie Capell.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, in the Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
