Wesley A. House

Wesley Antonio House, age 26, entered into eternal rest on Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born in Summerton, he was a son of Sinda “Peggy” House and James Carter. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed by Gold Kist of Sumter and was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Church, Summerton.

In addition to his parents, he leaves to mourn his passing and grow from his memories: three sons, Melquan House, Devonte House and Damien House, all of Summerton; a sister, Lesley House of Whitesville, N.C.; a stepsister, Tiffany Abraham of Manning; four stepbrothers, Matthew Stewart Jr. of Whitesville, N.C., Antonia Johnson of New York, Aaron Wells and Jamal Carter, both of Summerton; paternal grandmother, Ella Carter of Summerton; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Hudson Jr.

Robert Hudson Jr., formerly of Vero Beach, Fla., departed this earthly life on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Clarendon County on Oct. 8, 1935, he was the eldest son of Sarah Jane Davis Hudson and the late Robert Hudson Sr.

At an early age he joined Mount Moriah Union Methodist Church and remained a member until he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Mr. Hudson, his wife, along with family and friends, went from house to house for Bible study and worship. Eventually they formed their own church, Ascension Chapel Presbyterian Church. He was employed with Pace Pool Inc., until they went out of business. He later formed his own Pool Plastering Company by Bob, where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Sarah Jane Davis Hudson; four daughters, Odell (Willie) Kingwood of Norwalk, Conn., Sandra (Donald) White and Michelle Brunson of Sumter and Eartha Hudson of Pinckard, Ala.; three sons, Ronald S. (Vivian) Hudson of Fort Lauderdale, Robert Terry Hudson and Bryant (Cynthia) Hudson of Sumter; nine grandchildren, Crystal, Tony, Tory, Shryl, Jasmine, Jemonde, Jamaal, Joshua and Teron; a great-grandson, Tiric; and a great-granddaughter, Lakehya; three sisters, Anna Laura Hudson of Fort Lauderdale, Margaret (Alex) Wilkerson and Odessa (Alfred) Scott, all of Rochester, N.Y.; seven brothers, William E. (Wyoma) Hudson Sr. of Bridgeport, Conn., Sammie Lee, LeRoy and Herman Hudson, all of Fort Lauderdale, and Lawrence Anderson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two special friends and business partners, John Anthony of Fort Lauderdale, and Alwin Wallace of Vero Beach; 10 other sisters-in-law; four other brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Hudson was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Thelma Hudson; a brother, Vertell Hudson; two children and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at Congruity Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Jones Jr., pastor, and eulogy by the Rev. Jonathan Anderson.

Burial followed in the Billie Cemetery.

Carrie M. Joye

Carrie Miller Mack Joye, 88, widow of Louis Mack and Joe Joye, died Sept. 3, 2005, at Windsor Manor Nursing Home, Manning.

Born March 23, 1917, in the Wilson Mill section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Fleet Miller and Alma King Miller. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ and joined Biggers AME Church and worked in many capacities in the church. She was employed at St. Luke Hospital and retired in 1970.

Survivors include one daughter, Vanesha (Mackey) Joe of Manning; two sisters, Thelma Dupree of Hardeville and Irene Doctor of Alexandria, Va.; one grandchild; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother and one grandson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at Biggers AME Church, with the Rev. Andrew Jordan, pastor, officiating, assisting the Revs. Mattie Mouzon and Sylvester Hicks.

Burial was in Muldrow Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Gregory J. Lynady

Gregory J. Lynady of Toms River, N.J., formerly of Orangeburg, N.Y., was called to Heaven on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005. He was 74 years old.

Gregory was born on Oct. 8, 1930 in the Bronx to Gregory and Margaret Lynady. Greg was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne, which he was very proud.

He was an electrician with the IBEW Local #501 out of Westchester and was one of the last retirees from that local. He married Connie, whom he affectionately referred by him as “His Bride” on May 21, 1955. Greg and Connie’s love was very special.

As everyone who knew Greg knows, if an organization had a membership, Greg was sure to join. He was very active while living in Orangeburg. He was a past member of the Orangeburg Volunteer Fire Department, one of the first coaches for the Might Midgets Football program, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, member of the American Legion #329, Korean War Vets, 82nd Airborne, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Knights of Columbus #5343 of Blauvelt and a Eucharistic Minister at St. Catherine’s Church in Blauvelt.

Greg’s involvement in his community didn’t end there. Upon moving to Lake Ridge in Toms River, he joined the Knights of Columbus Toms River Chapter, became a Eucharistic Minister at St. Luke’s Church and was a member of the Lake Ridge Men’s Club, past board member of the Grounds Committee, and currently the president of the Lake Ridge Golf Club. Greg loved to golf, and if the weather permitted, did so three times a week. He loved the weekly card games and friendships that he came to cherish in Lake Ridge.

Greg was predeceased by his love, Connie on Jan. 24, 2001, as well as his parents, his brother, Thomas; his sister Peggy and brother-in-law Anthony Cucinelli; his in-laws Cornelius and Ann Farrelly, his brother-in-law Robert E. Farrelly, sister-in-law Mary Farrelly and his brother-in-law, Cornelius Farrelly.

He is survived by his daughter, Patrice Brown of Manning, son Gregory (Diane) of New Windsor, N.Y., daugher Beth (Danny) Siciliano of Pearl River, N.Y., son Neil (Alice) of Orangeburg, N.Y. He also leaves 13 grandchildren: Sara (Brad) McClennan, Keith Brown, Gregory, Thomas and KerriAnn Lynady, Danielle, Christopher and Brianna Siciliano, Jessica and Conor Lynady and Kenneth and Emily Gordon. He leaves one great-granddaughter, Taylor Elizabeth McClennan, his sister-in-law Marguerite Lynady, several cousins, numerous nieces and nephews and many who called him their friend. Greg will be missed by all, but is happier to be with Connie, his one true love.

A funeral mass was celebrated on Friday, Aug. 23, 2005 at St. Catherine’s Church in Blauvelt.

Burial followed at Ascension Cemetery in Monsey, N.Y.

The family requests that memorials be made to the hospice program of one’s choice.

Mary B. Smith

Mary Brown Smith, 70, wife of James Smith, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born Nov. 25, 1935, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Robert Brown and Katie McFadden Brown. She received her formal education at Howard Chapel School, New Zion. In her youth, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined Howard Chapel AME Church, New Zion.

Survivors besides her husband, James Smith of the home, include one son, Alvin Brown of New Zion; two daughters, Cheryl (Farrell) Godwin of New Zion and Mary Lee (Donnie) Curtis of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, Donald McKenzie of New Zion and Ivory (Levola) Brown of Fort Lauderdale; four sisters, Mattie (Robert) McFadden of New Zion, Lue McFadden and Ruth McFadden, both of Fort Lauderdale, and Marion McFadden of Baltimore, Md.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Doc Brown and Charlie Brown Sr.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at Howard Chapel AME Church, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Herbert Godwin, the Rev. Lucious Wheeler and the Rev. Nathaniel McFadden, eulogist.

Burial followed in the Howard Chapel Church Cemetery.

Barbara A. Bennette-Stowers

Ms. Barbara Ann Bennette-Stowers, 57, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at JFK Hospital in Edison, N.J.

Born in Summerton, she was a daughter of Washington Bennette and the late Mary Ann Nelson Bennette and stepdaughter of Dorothy Bennette.

Barbara attended and graduated from Prospect Heights High School in New York. She continued her education at Pace University in New York, where she majored in accounting. She was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank in New York.

Left behind to cherish her memories are a loving and devoted son, Aubrey Stowers of Irvington, N.J.; her special gift and daughter, Jon’Delle C. Bennette Wilson of Irvington; three sisters, Francess C. Bennette of Plainfield, N.J., Candace Gaymon of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ikisha Bennette of Queens, N.Y.; two brothers, James Bennette of Tinton Falls, N.J., and Antorios Bennette of Brooklyn; three grandchildren; a special friend and companion, “Snowball,” and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for the late Ms. Barbara Ann Bennette-Stowers were held on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. M.J. Capers, pastor, officiating, with the Rev. Marvin McIntyre serving as eulogist.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Dorothy D. Young

Dorothy Ann Davis Young, 51, wife of Levy Young, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born July 8, 1954, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Horton Davis Sr. and Josephine Johnson Davis.

Ms. Young attended Clarendon County public schools, and after graduation she attended Columbia College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Carolina and received her master’s degree from Troy State University in Sumter. In her youth, she joined Mt. Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Capt. Brian C. (Kizzy) Young of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Reginald L. Young of Atlanta; one daughter, Tiffany Grant of Atlanta; two brothers, Horton (Mamie) Davis Jr. of Manning and Johnny Davis of Sumter; four sisters, Virginia Julius of Baltimore, Shirley Hunt of Fayetteville, N.C., Mary A. (James) McLain of Allentown, Pa., and Sandra Evans of Manning; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ellen Miller and one brother, Willie Janes (Billy) Davis.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at Greenhill Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu with the Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, the Rev. W.J. Frierson, Evangelist Myra Pearson, Minister Delbert Singleton and the Rev. Gary Miller, eulogist, officiating.

Burial followed in Green Hill Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 271, Alcolu, S.C. 29001.

Jacqueline R. Hook

Jacqueline Rodgers Hook, 89, widow of Frederick William Hook, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006.

Born May 3, 1917, in Lake City, she was a daughter of the late Charles Eustace and Mayme McClam Rodgers. She was a retired merchant, a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Manning and a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Manning.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet H. (Howard) Floyd of Lake City; two sons, Dr. Charles R. (Anne) Hook of Mount Pleasant and Robert W. Hook of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Janet R. Ingle of Mount Pleasant; a brother-in-law, Lewis H. Hook of Sumter; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Frederick William Hook Jr.; and a sister, Vivian Rodgers.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Dr. Ron Dillon officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Joyce Tina B. Grubb

Joyce Tina Berry Grubb, 29, wife of Ronald Grubb, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of Charles Berry and Shelby Hodge Green.

Survivors besides her husband, father and mother include her stepmother, Debra Berry; stepfather, Billy Lawhon, all of Sumter; three stepchildren, Joshua Allan Grubb, Matthew Lee Grubb and Jessica Paige Grubb, all of Sumter; one grandchild, Hunter Grubb; paternal grandmother, Christine Jordan Berry of Sumter; maternal grandparents, Harmon Patrick “Pat” Hodge and Joyce Rogers Hodge of Sumter; four sisters, Rebecca Turner, Crissy Miles, Charlene Barkley and Kimberly Rogers, all of Sumter; one brother, David Green Jr. of New Zion; a special aunt, Wanda Garner of Sumter; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Turner and the Rev. Patrick Belken officiating.
