Ernest C. DuBose

Ernest Carlisle DuBose, 76, husband of Evelyn White DuBose, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Oct. 8, 1929, in Manning, he was a son of the late Joe S. and Lottie Ridgeway DuBose. He was retired from SCDOT, and attended Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are two sons, Carlisle R. (Pat) DuBose of Manning and Harry Joe (Carol) DuBose of Lugoff; two brothers, Scott DuBose of Lanes and Richard DuBose of Manning; four sisters, Corine Ard and Mildred Lewis of Manning, Isabel Adee of Dalzell, and Josephine Drake of St. Matthews; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and special friends, Johnny Miles and Levi Richburg.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, in Liberty Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Charlie Salter and the Rev. Larry Hughes officiating.

Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth K. McCoy

Ruth Kennedy McCoy entered into eternal rest on Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at Hopewell Nursing Center.

She was born in Sumter County, on Feb. 16, 1919, a daughter of the late Samuel and Mamie Kennedy. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She worked many years in housekeeping for Tuomey Hospital, until she retired.

Survivors include one sister, Ida Mae Gifford of Hyattsville, Md.; devoted cousin, Catherine Gibson of Rimini; niece, Lillian Robinson of Williamsburg, N.J.

Funeral services were held in the chapel of Community Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, with the Rev. Warren Hatcher and the Rev. Leroy T. James.

Burial followed at Hillside Memorial Park.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert A. Jenkins

Robert Alvah “Bobby” Jenkins, 82, husband of Barbara Williams Jenkins and widower of Bennie Boles Jenkins, and a legendary former coach at Lincoln High School from 1952 to 1967, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.
Born in Manning, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Alvah (Stella White) Jenkins. He was a graduate of Mather Academy, Camden. While attending Morehouse College, Atlanta, Ga., he was drafted and served as a Naval hospital corpsman during World War II. Upon discharge, he enrolled at S.C. State College, where he received both the bachelor and master’s degrees.
His professional career was spent in Sumter School District 17, where, at Lincoln High School, he served as science teacher, coach (football, basketball, track and tennis) and athletic director. At Lincoln High School, his football teams had many successful seasons. Later, he served as supervisor with the National Teacher Corps and guidance counselor at McLaurin and Bates Middle schools. For several years, he served as counselor in the Upward Bound Program at Morris College in Sumter.
Mr. Jenkins served on the Governor’s Physical Fitness Council, South Carolina, AARP Legislative Committee, Wateree Planning and Grants Commission, Carolina Low-Country Girl Scouts, Clarendon County Habitat for Humanity, Clarendon County Council on Aging, Selective Service System Board, Clarendon County Board of Education and CETA Advisory Board. He was a past commander of American Legion Post No. 294 and past trustee of Trinity AME Church.

He was a sports official on the high school and collegiate levels, where he held memberships in the Association of Southern Coaches and Officials, the High School League of Officials, the Southeastern Official and Mid-Eastern Athletics Conference Officials. As a result of his dedication to the field of sports, he was entered in the S.C. Basketball Officials Hall of Fame in 2002.
Mr. Jenkins formerly held memberships in the Clarendon County NAACP, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and the Savannah Chapter of the National Association of Guardsmen Inc.

He received many honors and awards through the years.

Survivors are his wife, Dr. Barbara Williams Jenkins of Manning; a son, Ronald (Jacqueline) Jenkins of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Pamela (Michael) Yancey of Danville, Va.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey and Bennie Jenkins of Charlotte, Airman Ronald Robert (Crystal) Jenkins of Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, Ashton Ford and Michael Yancey II of Danville; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 9, 2006, at Trinity AME Church with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. William Smith, presiding elder, the Rev. Edward McDowell Jr., the Rev. Victor Singletary and Presiding Elder Dr. Alonzo Middleton, eulogist.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Trinity AME Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 165, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Douglas M. Simmons

Douglas Maynard Simmons, 78, husband of the late Barbara Janice Hatfield Simmons, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Rockingham County, Va., he was a son of the late Oscar Glen Simmons and the late Fern Violet Joseph Simmons.
Mr. Simmons was a member of Jefferson Road Freewill Baptist Church. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include four children, Michael Simmons of Greenville, Kimberly Turner, Lisa Berry, and Terry Simmons, all of Sumter; a sister, Helen Newman of Harrisonburg, Va.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Bryan Frances Hatfield Jr. of Sumter; and two sisters-in-law, Nina Faye Parker of Myrtle Beach and Alice Casandra DuBose of Paxville.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2006, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Rusty Conyers and the Rev. Larry Hummel officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Jefferson Road Freewill Baptist Church, 999 Jefferson Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Hannah L. McDowell

Hannah Lullener McDowell, 61, widow of Ben Pack and J.C. McDowell, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at her residence, 1255 Honeytree Drive, Sumter.

Born Oct. 18, 1943, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Sammie Anderson and Eliza James Anderson. She received her formal education in the public schools of Sumter County. She was a bus driver for Sumter County School District 17. She attended Manning Deliverance Temple, where she was head church mother and worked with the youth department.

Survivors include two sons, Ben Pack and special friend, Adriane, of Columbia and Randy (Velma) Pack of Randalltown, Md.; four daughters, Yolanda (Oliver) Coleman and Loretha Player, both of Sumter, Flora Mae (friend, Willie) Fulmore of Manning and Evelyn (James) Montgomery of Scranton; one brother, George Anderson of Bronx, N.Y.; five sisters, Carrie Anderson, Julia (Elvis) Nelson, Deloris (Lawrence) China and Brenda Williams, all of Sumter, and Eliza (Marion) Benton of Columbia; 27 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Manning Deliverance Temple, Juneburn Road, Manning, with Pastor Jacquelyn Fulmore officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Essie Mae Woods

Essie Mae Woods, 86, wife of Pete Woods, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, at Hopewell Health Care Center, after an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Rainey Brunson Sr. and Victoria Gordon. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter. Being reared in a Christian home with sisters and brothers, she sought the need of a personal Savior and joined St. Peter Baptist Church at an early age, where she served faithfully as an usher until her health failed. Essie Mae was joined in holy matrimony to Pete Woods. She was a loving and devoted housewife, mother, sister, grandmother, friend and cousin. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Pete Woods of Sumter; three sons, Raymond (Sharron) Brunson of Tampa, Fla., Voneric (Mary) Brunson of Sumter, and James (Lillian) Brunson of Tampa; grandchildren, Marvin (Marie) Nathaniel, T.J. Johnson, Saniquia Brunson, Evette Nathaniel, James E. Gallishaw, Raymond Gallishaw, Lisa Y. Gallishaw, Sheryl Kelly, Ernest Kelly, Tamika Kelly, Sheldon Kelly and Jaylon Woods, all of Sumter, Barrick Brunson, Beverly Brunson, Byron Brunson, Bernadette Brunson, Benita Brunson and Barbia Jean Brunson, all of Tampa; 40 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; a goddaughter, Joanne R. Nathaniel of Sumter; a special niece, Renee Brunson of New York; other relatives of Virginia and Denver, Colo., who are deeply grieved by her passing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rainey and Victoria Brunson; three sisters, Lillian Jackson, Tara Brunson, Azalee Hilton; and three brothers, Rainey Brunson Jr., Leon Brunson, and Ive Brunson Sr.

Services for Mrs. Woods were held on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Florence Luster, the Rev. Sylvester Hicks and Minister Ethel Lemon.

Burial followed in the Mulberry Church Cemetery, Sumter.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Alfonur Johnson

BRONX, N.Y. – Alfonur “Al” Johnson, 49, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Calvary Hospital, Bronx.

Born Jan. 7, 1957, in Manhattan, N.Y., he was a son of Pastor Ruth Lee Johnson and the late Albertus Johnson. He attended Public School 23 in Bronx and Manning Elementary School, Manning. He also attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar Junior High and Stevenson High School in Bronx. He was a member of Greater Evangelist Mission Pentecostal Church, Bronx. He served on the church choir, male choir and as church custodian. He was employed with American Watch Manufacturing Co.

Survivors besides his mother, Pastor Ruth Lee Johnson of Bronx, include one son, Bobby Johnson of Bronx; and three brothers, Oscar (Claudia) Johnson of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Michael Johnson of Manning and David Johnson of Bronx.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at Bethel AME Church, Loss Brooke Road, Manning, with the Rev. Franklin McCants presiding, Eulogist Pastor Ruth Johnson, assisting the Rev. Shermina Walker.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Marie B. McNeil

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Marie Benjamin McNeil died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at Liberty Wood Nursing Facility.

She was born March 25, 1937, in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Julia Benjamin Williams and Oakley Dow. She was reared by her grandparents, the late Rev. W.T. and Camilla James Benjamin. Educated in the public schools of Clarendon County, she was a member of Antioch UME Church. After moving to Thomasville, N.C., she joined Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Thomasville under watch care.

Survivors include three sons, Jonathan Benjamin of North Myrtle Beach, Lee Curtis McNeil (Sarah) and Otis McNeil (Patricia) of Thomasville; one stepson, Charles Duffie of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Minister Thomasina Stevens (Joseph) of Thomasville and Juanita Mack (William) of Sumter; one stepdaughter, Pamella Duffie of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-granchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, in Antioch UME Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. Jonathan Smith officiating, assisting Evangelists Sue Burgess, Mary Lattimore and Cassander McLendon and Minister Anthony Rogers.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Annie Way

Annie Bell Prince Levine Way, 86, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 11, 1919, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Prince and Trudie Witherspoon Prince. She was also the widow of Eugene Levine Sr. and later Gonzales Way.

At an early age, she was a member of St. Peter Baptist Church of Clarendon County. Later she became a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended faithfully until her heath began to fail.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene (Mary Frances) Levine Jr. and James W. (Mable) Levine, all of Sumter; Gloria Levine (Chuck) Jett, and Renee A. Levine of Savannah, Ga., whom she reared; three brothers-in-law, Humiz (Flossie) Way of Sumter, Sonny (Martha Lee) Way, and Silas (Aliza) Brunson of Manning; three sisters-in-law, Mary E. King of Flushing, Queens, N.Y., Calease Bradley and Betty Foster of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a lifetime friend, Nancy Blanding of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three daughters, Annie Mae Sinkler, Janie and Geneva Prince; two brothers, Frank Prince Jr. and Pete C. Prince; and two sisters, Lucille Prince Searson and Luretia Prince Daniels.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Marion Newton, senior pastor, eulogist, assisted by Pastor Ricky Simmons, Minister Velda Rucker, and Minister Linda Sprouts.

Floral bearers were granddaughters.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Sumter.
