Barbara T. Hammet

Barbara Jane Todd Hammet, 60, wife of Raleigh Benjiman Hammet, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born July 5, 1945, in Conway, she was a daughter of the late Travis Blackwell and the late Margie Todd. She was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are her husband of Summerton; three sons, Joe, Jerry and John Dupree, all of Charleston; a grandson, Alexander Dupree of Charleston.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Witherspoon

Kenneth “Kenny, K-9” Witherspoon, 48, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 16, 1956, in Baltimore, he was a son of the late Rosa Mae Witherspoon. He was reared by his grandmother, the late Lurena Witherspoon. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he attended Sunday school at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Rosa W. Garrett (Johnny Hilton) of Manning.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev, George P. Windley, officiating, assisting the rev. Henry McCray and Minister Lillian Wright.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Sumuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Ervin Nelson Jr.

ORANGEBURG — Ervin Nelson Jr., 62, husband of the late Edna Mae Taylor Nelson, died Oct. 6, 2005, at the Orangeburg Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and Calhoun counties, Orangeburg.

Born May 5, 1943, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late Ervin Nelson Sr., and Mary Jane Francis Nelson.

He obtained his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed for 30 years with Wilson Brothers Farms. He joined Harmony Presbyterian Church in Alcolu.

Survivors include one son, Ervin (Joanne) Nelson III, of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Julia A. Nelson of Manning, and Teresa Nelson of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Robert (Lizzie) Nelson, of Alcolu, and Ronald (Ernestine) Nelson of Greeleyville; four sisters, Diane Nelson of Atlanta, Ga., Maryanne (Tommy) Brown of Orangeburg, Connie (Velton) Nelson of Sumter, and Andrea (Henry) Ferguson of Atlanta, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisting the Rev. Jerome McCray, presiding, the Rev. Jerome Anderson and the Rev. George P. Windley Sr.

Burial was be in Harmony Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home, LLC, was in charge of arrangements.

Jonathan L. Timmons

AYNOR — Jonathan Leon Timmons, age 34, passed away Oct. 6, 2005, at his residence, following an extended illness.

Mr. Timmons was born in Hampton, Va., the son of Jimmy and Linda Croft and John and Sheri Timmons. He was a member of Trinity Freewill Baptist Church PF. Mr. Timmons played in the movie “The Vernon Johns Story” with James Earl Jones and also in “Scattered Dreams” with Tyne Daly and Gerald McRaney.

Mr. Timmons’ wishes were to have his body willed to the Medical University in Charleston.

Surviving in addition to his parents are three sisters, Christine Croft Forman and her husband, Bryan, from Galivants Ferry, Angela Hodge and her husband, Craig, from Sumter, and Dinell Timmons from Summerton; four nieces, Victoria and Lindsey Foreman from Galivants Ferry and Lindley and Kailin Hodge from Sumter.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, with the Rev. Darrell Langston, the Rev. Donnie Collins and Earl Williams officiating.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice, P.O. Box 50640, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29579.

Johnson Funeral Home of Aynor was in charge of the arrangements.

Roosevelt Mickens

Roosevelt Mickens, age 47, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Summerton, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at Brookdale Memorial Hospital, Brooklyn.

He was born in Summerton to the late J.P. “Bubba” Mickens and Alice Andrews Mickens, on Oct. 16, 1957. He was educated in the public schools of Manhattan, N.Y.

He leaves to mourn his passing and grow from his memories, a daughter, Tamika Watson of Bronx, N.Y.; a brother, Allen Mickens of Cambria Heights, N.Y.; a sister, Essie M. Leary of Cambria Heights; one grandson,Tykel Watson of Bronx; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, at Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, River Road community, Summerton, with the Rev. Warren Hatcher, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton.

Willie J. Ragin Sr.

Willie James “Bo” Ragin Sr., 69, husband of the late Annie Mae Scriven Ragin, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County on Jan. 30, 1937, he was the son of the late Millard S. and Lucille Doughty Ragin. Mr. Ragin attended Stonehill Elementary School and Lincoln High School. At an early age, he joined Union Station AME Church. Mr. Ragin was an exceptional cook. He worked at Tuomey Regional Medical Center for a number of years. He was also employed by Georgia Pacific and Crosswell Wholesale.

He leaves to cherish his memories a daughter, Tracy B. (Brent) Ragin-Clyburn of Sumter; three sons, Frankie (Mallicha) Ragin, Willie James Ragin Jr. and Stacy Ragin, all of Sumter; three brothers, Eddie Ragin and Robert (Jean) Ragin of Baltimore, Md., and Charles (Ellaree) Ragin of Sumter; two sisters, Rosalie (John) Price of Sumter and Sarah Ragin-Globe of Seattle, Wash.; one aunt, Daisy M. Mack of Sumter; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ragin was preceded in death by three brothers, Jeremiah Ragin, Thomas N. Ragin and Millard Ragin Jr.; one sister, Hattie Ragin-Brinson; and one son, Gerald Bruce Ragin.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Union Station AME Church, 940 S. Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Friendly J. Gadson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sammie D. Simmons, the Rev. Larry C. Weston and the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton.

Burial was in the Bradford Cemetery.

Paul K. Brixhoff Sr.

Paul Karl Brixhoff Sr., 84, beloved husband of 64 years to Martha Frances Mayo Brixhoff, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Jan. 19, 1921, in Savannah, Ga., he was a son of the late Paul Kurt Brixhoff Heiden and the late Edith Lee Heiden. He was of the Baptist faith, a mason, served on the board of directors for Wake Forest Federal Savings and Loan for 34 years and had recently been appointed director emeritus, and he was also a former town commissioner and mayor of Wake Forest. He was a U.S. Navy veteran in WWII and Korea.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are a son, Paul Karl (Ada) Brixhoff Jr. of Summerton, and their son and daughter, David Adams and Laura Brixhoff Gilman; a daughter, Lynda Brixhoff (Bryant) Owens of Hilton Head Island, and daughter, Randi Owens; six great-grandchildren; and special family members, Patricia Armstrong and Pamela Clark.

Memorial services were held on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Carl Weatherburn officiating.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Ruth Ann Conyers

Ruth Ann Conyers entered eternal rest Saturday, July 30, 2005, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

She was born Aug. 12, 1954, in Sumter County, to Abraham and Mary Lee Brown Conyers. Ruth Ann attended the public schools of Sumter County and attended New Hope UME Church with her family for many years.

She is survived by three brothers, Isaiah (Camilla) Conyers and Jimmy Conyers, both of Pinewood, and Jessie Conyers of New Jersey; four sisters, Elouise Blackstalk of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jeraldine Weathers of Paxville, Bessie (Burdy) Pringle of Manning and Susie (William) Simpson of Wilmington, N.C.; and two additional brothers-in-law, Irvin and Richard.

Funeral services for Ruth Ann Conyers were held on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at New Hope UME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Kate B. Roberts

Kate B. Roberts, 92, widow of Ulysses (Scott) Roberts, died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at her home, 1991 Hotel St., Alcolu.

Born July 15, 1913, in Gourdin, she was a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Clarkson Brunson and a stepdaughter of Mattie Rogers Brunson. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. At an early age, she joined St. James AME Church in Lanes and also attended Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church regularly.

Survivors include eight sons, John (Viola) Roberts of Manning, Herbert (Pearl) Roberts of Adams Run, William Roberts of Newport News, Va., John Lee Roberts of Jersey City, N.J., Isaac (Annie) Williams of Fort Myers, Fla., Willie (Ernestine) Roberts of Rocky Mount, N.C., James Robert of Alcolu and Elder Frankie (Inez) Roberts of Atlanta; five daughters, Albertha Atkins of Estill, Albertha R. (Leon) Blackwell and Maria Sheriod, all of Alcolu, Janette (Asberry) Dozier of Fayetteville, N.C., and Minister Sylvia Whitaker of Manning; 96 grandchildren; 184 great-grandchildren; 167 great-great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, two sons, three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at St. James AME Church, Lanes, with the Rev. Gilbert Dekim, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Leon Wright, the Rev. James Brown Jr., the Rev. Cheryl Long and Minister Sylvia Whitaker.

Burial was in the churchyard.

James E. Briggs

James Earl “Bootee” Briggs, 65, husband of Esther Durant Briggs, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at his residence in Manning.

Born Sept. 12, 1939, in the Sammy Swamp section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Oscar Briggs Sr. and the late Juanita Butler Briggs and stepson of Carrie Lemon Briggs. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church. He worked for Bozzier, Walton and Ziegler Construction Co., until retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Esther D. Briggs of the home; father and stepmother, Oscar and Carrie L. Briggs of Manning; six sons, Lee E. Briggs of the home, James (Capt. Bernita) Briggs of Korea, Wilbert Briggs of Manning, Willie (Angelique) Briggs of Sumter, Joe A. (Kim) Briggs of Columbia, Timmy (Mamie) Briggs of Woodbridge, Va.; five daughters, Peggy Knox of Manning, Leila (Adam) Williams of Sumter, Betty (Eric) Roberts of Greenville, Brenda (Sgt. 1st Class David) Dupree of Hellendale, Calif., and Tabatha Briggs of the home; five brothers, Lee Ernest (Barbara) Briggs, Thomas Briggs, Marcus (Minnie) Briggs, all of Manning, Walter (Susan) Briggs and Johnny Lee Briggs of Wilmington, N.C.; two stepbrothers, James Lemon and Lester (Deloris) Lemon, all of Manning; three sisters, Evangelist Margie (the Rev. Marvin) Conyers, Maxine (John) Carraway and Mary Lawson, all of Manning; three stepsisters, Sadie (Richard) Bradley and Laura Daney, all of Baltimore, Md., and Sarah (Leroy) Conyers of Manning; 30 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, pastor, officiating, assisting the Revs. Roosevelt McFadden Jr. and Jonathan Anderson.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.
