Alma Knight

Alma Jeanette Richburg Knight, 76, widow of Harold Glen Knight, died Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at her daughter’s home in Manning.

Born July 28, 1929, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Ellis J. and Rachel Lowder Richburg. She was retired from Manning Manufacturing, and was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church and the Beauclaire Eastern Star No. 20.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy (Lloyd) Roberson of Manning; two grandchildren, Kevin K. (Jenni) Roberson of James Island and Emily R. (Timmy) Thornton of Lexington. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Robin Roberson.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Mike Murdoch and the Rev. Sim Smith officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Grace Christian Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 702, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Frank K. Thomas

TURBEVILLE — Frank K. Thomas, 79, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, in a Sumter hospital after an illness.

Born in Richland County, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Friendly Lynwood Thomas and Lily Bell Turbeville Thomas. He was retired from Santee Printworks and was a member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Robinson Thomas; and a daughter, Laura Thomas Hutchinson.

He is survived by a daughter, Debra Poole of Sumter; three sons, Earl Thomas of Sumter, Bill Thomas of Manning, and Ray Thomas of Elgin; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society 1599 Clifton Rd. NE Atlanta, Ga., 30329.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Floyd Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Ann L. Byas

BALTIMORE, Md. – Mary Ann Lemon Byas, 90, widow of Willie Byas Sr., died Aug. 11, 2006, at John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Aug. 12, 1915, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Charlton Lemon and Lurena Dukes Lemon. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined St. James AME Church, where she served faithfully until her health failed.

Survivors include two sons, Willie (Quennie) Byas Jr. and Werry (Anne) Byas, all of Baltimore; eight daughters, Helen (Frank) Peterson, Essie Byas, Lue Jane Byas, Bertha (Jack) Edward, Willie Mae (Jeff) Lemon, Cenna (Ronald) Summerville, all of Baltimore, Margrette (Walter) Ingram and Julia (AC) Wells, both of Buffalo, N.Y.; one brother, Charlton (Dorothy) Lemon of Sumter; two sisters, Harristeen (Roosevelt) Bozier of Santee and Celia Bennett of Baltimore; 30 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at the Historical Mount Zion AME Church in the Potato Creek section of Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. W.J. Huggins, pastor of Historical Mount Zion AME Church, officiating, with the Rev. Ralph Brown, pastor of St. James AME, serving as eulogist.

Burial was in the St. James AME cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mildred N. Pack

Mildred Newkirk Pack, 80, widow of Lewis Elijah Pack, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 23, 1925, in Fort Pierce, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Willie Newkirk and Maria Pritchard Newkirk. She received her education at Melina Parochial School. She studied with Jehovah’s Witnesses and, in September 1973, was baptized in the congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, serving as a ministerial servant.

Survivors include one brother-in-law, Otis Pack of Gable; one sister, Virginia Johnson of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Virginia Newkirk of Asbury Park, N.J.; three nieces, Loretta Robinson of North Plainsfield, N.J., Eddie Mae Newland of Neptune, N.J. and Dorothy Newkirk of Brooklyn, N.Y.; special friends, Brother General and Thelma Benbow of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Greeleyville Hwy., Manning, with Brother Wilbert Lemon officiating, assisting Brother General Benbow.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Annie Webb

Annie Marie Pitts Webb, 96, widow of Paul Arbie Webb Sr., died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Born Feb. 24, 1910, in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Theodore K. and Mary Anna Rhodes Pitts. A member of Santee Baptist Church in Manning, she was a homemaker and spent most of her life in Florence County. She moved from Florence to Santee, where she and her husband made their home at Wyboo for many years.

Surviving are two sons, Paul A. (Frances) Webb Jr. and Carlos O. (Barbara) Webb of Summerton; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2006, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

Memorials may be made to Santee Baptist Church, c/o Jimmy Eldreth, 1057 Davis St., Manning, S.C. 29102.

Tom Bowman

PHOENIX – Tom “Mike” Bowman, son of the late William Bowman Sr. and Ethel Lee Sanders Bowman, was born Oct. 13, 1971, in Summerton.

He was a graduate of the Scott’s Branch High School class of 1989. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mike died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at Maryvale Hospital in Phoenix.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted mother, Ethel Lee Bowman of Summerton; three sons, Demari Tom Bowman of Phoenix, Micheal Bowman and Carilo Bowman of Hawlock, N.C.; a daughter, Shante Cummings of Manning; six stepchildren, David Carter, Latrevette George and Daquina George of Hawlock, and Daylin Johnson, Deisonyea Johnson and Barish Johnson of Phoenix; two sisters, Sherlean (Anthony) Tindal of Miami and Patricia Bowman of Summerton; three brothers, Nathaniel Sanders of High Point, N.C., William Bowman Jr. of Atlanta, and James Bowman of Summerton; and a grandmother, Mamie Bowman of Summerton. Also left to grieve Mike’s memory are four aunts; three uncles; a devoted niece, Sophia Bowman of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a devoted cousin, Ricky Sanders of Columbia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; and a special friend, Sabrina Johnson of Phoenix.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at Mt. Pleasant UME Church in the Panola community. The service was officiated by the Rev. James O. Robinson.

Burial followed in the Ivory Cemetery in Davis Station.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances B. Curry

Frances Brunson Sargent Curry, 81, widow of Murray Curry, died Friday, July 14, 2006, at her home in Jacksonville, Fla.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Lucius L. Brunson and the late Itly T. Brunson and was the granddaughter of the late Frank L. and Elizabeth Kell Brunson. Mrs. Curry was a retired secretary with Burlington Industries. She was a former member of First Presbyterian Church.

She was twice married, first to the late Albert R. Sargent and later to the late Murray Curry.

Surviving are a sister, Harriett Ingram of Lakeland, Fla.; cousins, Lad (Bootsie) Owens of Sumter, Dell Tomlinson of Manning and Elizabeth Reid of Rock Hill.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, July 30, 2006, in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Mark Durrett officiating.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Michael A. Geddings

Michael Allen Geddings, 31, husband of Tiffney Charlene Geddings, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Cecil Wayne Geddings and Bertha Cleo Bryant Geddings.

He was a member of Home Branch Baptist Church and the Talking Horse Hunting Club of Orangeburg. He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army National Guard.

Survivors besides his wife and parents include two daughters, Kelsie Geddings of Maryland and Jordan Geddings of the home; a son, Kendall Geddings of Maryland; two sisters, Lisa Robison of St. George and Marcie Driver of Japan; nieces and nephews, Phillip Jenkins, Jared Jenkins, Jaden Austin, Taylor Jenkins and Jessica Driver.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, july 30, 2006, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Robert Haynes officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joey Bell, Jamie Bell, David Garcia, Bobby Frye and Rocky Thornhill.

Mary Idell W. Moore

Mary Idell Moore, 68, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 24, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

She was born in Kingstree, on Sept. 10, 1937, a daughter of the late Wallie Washington and the late Annie Hill Washington. She attended St. Paul Holiness Church in Sumter. At an early age, she joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Kingstree.

She leaves to cherish her memories forever, her husband, John Willie Moore of Sumter; two sons, Eugene (Elouise) McCutchen and Tyronne Moore, both of Sumter; five daughters, Gloria Dais of Columbia, Linda McCutchen, Carolyn McCutchen and Ethelean (John) Sinkler, all of Sumter, and Ann (Curtis) Nelson of Greeleyville; two brothers, David (Mammie) Washington of Forestville, Md. and Willie Jack Washington of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Gerline Richardson of Philadelphia, Pa., Annie McCutchen and Barbara Washington, both of Washington, D.C.; three aunts, Corine Mallion of Philadelphia, Flossie McCutchen of New York and Cenie Wilson of Washington, D.C.; one granduncle, Joseph Washington of Nesmith; brothers-in-law, Willie James (Claretha) Foster of Turbeville, Nathaniel (Edna) Moore of Sumter, Luther (Wendy) Moore, Curtis (Linda) Moore, David Moore and Daniel Moore, all of New Haven, Conn., and Jesse James (Justine) Graham of Florence; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Moore and Virginia Moore, both of New Haven, Conn. and Luelitha Washington of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 29, 2006, in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Kingstree. The Rev. Odell D. Ruffin, pastor, conducted the religious service.

Interment followed in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Kingstree.

Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home of Kingstree was in charge of arrangements.

Justin D. Robinson

Justin Devone “DD” Robinson entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 23, 2006, at his residence in Summerton.

Born on Monday, Oct. 3, 1986, in New York City, N.Y., he was a son of Isaac and Katherine Rhames Robinson. “DD” received his educational studies from public and private schools throughout New York City and Summerton.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his parents of the home; a brother, Jason Robinson of the home; a sister, Tracey Robinson of Greensboro, N.C.; nine aunts, Deacon Mary Pearson and Ida Mae Felder, both of Harlem, N.Y., Roberta Rhames, Barbara Rhames and Carrie Ann Rhames, all of Summerton, Dorothy Lyles, Betty Carson and Daisy Barnette, all of Philadelphia, Pa., and Pearline Robinson of Pinewood; five uncles, Frank Rhames of Summerton, Charlie Robinson and Quincy Robinson, both of Philadelphia, Wayne Robinson of Harlem, N.Y. and Ricardo Robinson of Greensboro; a loving grandmother, Malvenia Rhames of Summerton; two god-sisters, Yvonne Lang and Jazzie Lang, both of Summerton; a god-brother, Jonathan Manning of Harlem; a host of close relatives and friends. Also, a special nurse, Cherise Monique Spann of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 29, 2006, at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Silver with the Rev. W.J. Chandler, pastor, officiating.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.
