Betty M. Franklin

Betty M. Franklin, 55, died July 20, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Jan. 25, 1950, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Ida Mae McCray and Isaac Davis. She was reared by the late Deacon Richard McCray. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was employed with Craig Industries, Sumter. In her youth, she gave her life to the Lord and joined Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Alcolu. Later, she joined the Household of Faith Church, Flinn Road, Manning.

Survivors include three daughters, Wendy Franklin of Manning, Sylinda (Raymond) Johnson of Greeleyville and Belinda Franklin of Alcolu; seven brothers, Willie (Malvenia) McCray, Timothy McCray, Raymond McCray, Richard (Freda) McCray, all of Alcolu, Isaac Davis Jr., Sammy Lee Davis and Leroy Davis Jr., all of Newark, N.J.; seven sisters, Thelma Henry and Lou Ida (Isaiah) Lemon, both of Alcolu, Lillie Ann (Jimmy) Sott of Manning, Genevebia Davis of Maryland, Darlene Hinton of Newark, and Gwendolyn Washington of Sumter; three foster grandchildren; and one godchild.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Plowden Mill Pond Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis Brock officiating.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mills C. Parker

Mr. Mills Cleveland “Clevie” Parker, 54, husband of Shirley Floyd Parker, died Friday, July 29, 2005.

Mr. Parker was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late O’Neal and Norma Mae Harrington Parker. He was a farmer and owner-operator of Workman’s Grocery.

Survivors besides his wife of New Zion include two daughters, Hillary Parker and Melissa Parker, both of New Zion; a son, Rodney Parker of New Zion; a brother, Eddie (Marilyn) Parker of Orangeburg; two sisters, Mickie (J.W.) Evans of Bluffton and Patsy (Barry) Shuler of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at Midway Presbyterian Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, was in charge of arrangements.

Gwendolyn Miles Young

Mrs. Gwendolyn Miles Young, 51, wife of Phillip Young, died Thursday, July 28, 2005, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Young was born in Manning, a daughter of the late McDuffie “Judge” and Mary Elma Rogers Miles. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Phillip Young of Lake City; one son, William Travis Brickle, and one daughter, Mary Frances “Frannie” Brickle of Lake City; brothers and sisters, David (Lucille) Miles of Sardina, Libby Miles Meroney of Manning, Mack (Diane) Miles of Sardina, Johnny Rae (Doris) Miles of Manning and Cheryl Miles Morris of Sumter.

A graveside funeral service was held on Sunday, July 31, 2005 in New Town Free Will Baptist Church cemetery.

Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of arrangements.

Leona Maye Barfield

KINGSTREE – Mrs. Leona Maye Barfield, 83, widow of Carlysle Barfield, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at her residence.

Born June 24, 1923 in Manning, she was a daughter of James Franklin and Janie Haley Maye. She was a member of Union Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her son, Dr. Carlysle Barfield and her daughter, Ciri Barfield, both of Charleston; her sister, Jewell Timmerman of Kingstree; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2003 at Williamsburg Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jimmy Green and John Dodd officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 N. Fraser Street, Georgetown, S.C. 29442 or Union Presbyterian Church, 114 E. Brooks Street, Kingstree, S.C. 29566.

Williamsburg Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Claude Conyers Jr.

Claude Conyers Jr., 59, husband of Sarah Servance Conyers, died July 28, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Aug. 15, 1946, in Manning, he was a son of Cassie Thames Conyers and the late Claude Conyers Sr. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. For approximately 25 years, he was a body shop technician with Prothro and Santee Pontiac dealerships.

Survivors include three sons, Claude Servance (LaRaye) Conyers of Myrtle Beach, Willie Conyers of Alcolu and Charles (Verinoca) Conyers of Sumter; three daughters, Melissa Dingle Keith of Sumter, Kharmia Conyers and Kimberly Conyers, both of Myrtle Beach; stepdaughter, Frances Servance of Sumter; two brothers, Rufus (Mattie) Conyers and Willie (Joan) Conyers, both of Manning; three sisters, Annie Williams, Daisy (Paul) Graham and Lillie M. (Timothy) Wilson, all of Manning; and 22 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Fleming and DeLaine Chapel with the Rev. Etheleen Bethune officiating.

Burial was in Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Dorothy S. Huggins

Dorothy Simpson Huggins, 42, wife of Carl E. Huggins, died Sunday, July 30, 2006, at the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born in Richland County, she was a daughter of the late Horace T. Simpson and the late Oneida Campbell Simpson. Mrs. Huggins was a member of the League of the South.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; four sons, Daniel Shannon of Bishopville, Michael James of Charleston, David Cannon and Christopher Cannon, both of Sumter; three daughters, Angel Woody and Mallory Huggins, both of North Carolina, and Crystal Elmore of Sumter; three brothers, Gary Simpson of Sumter, Jack Simpson of Columbia and Wayne Simpson of Georgia; six sisters, Kathy Boswell, Pauline Avins, Melissa Moural, Sarah Brookshire, Margaret Avins of Sumter and Earlean Crooke of Manning; and seven grandchildren, Kalyssa Woody, Aaron Adams, Caitlin James, Casey James, Michelle Garvin, Alexandria Cannon and Kaylee Brown.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Avins, Horace Simpson, Robert Simpson, and Edward Simpson; and one sister, Ethel Lee.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. G.W. Harrell, the Rev. Kenny Griffin, and the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.

Burial was in the Geddings Cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Vera Polenova Kistler

Dr. Vera Polenova Kistler, 77, of Darlington died Thursday, August 3, 2006 at her residence following a long illness.

Dr. Kistler was born in Volyne, Czechoslovakia, a daughter of the late Karel and Anna Sy’korová Polena. She was an accomplished author, composer and musician having received numerous awards in all venues including Darlington’s Citizen of the Year as well as The Order of the Palmetto by the Governor of South Carolina.

Vera loved her family, friends and her Lord. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Thomas Calhoun (T.C.) Kistler.

Survivors include one daughter, Yana K. (John) Mathis of Manning and one son, David Kistler (Ann Ferree) of Fairbanks, Alaska and a special niece, Harriet (Michael) Perkins of Florence.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006 in the Trinity United Methodist Church in Darlington.

A private burial will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Landscaping Fund, P.O. Box 16, Darlington, S.C. 29540, the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, N.Y. 10018, or the McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29506.

Eddie Wilder Jr.

Eddie “Little Man” Wilder Jr., 55, husband of Mary Eaddy Wilder, died Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Plowden Mill Road in Sumter County.

Born Oct. 17, 1949, in the Manning section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Eddie Wilder Sr. and Margaret Wilder King and stepson of the late Joe King.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and in Connecticut. In his youth, he joined Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army doing two tours in Vietnam and was honorably discharged.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Lamont Hicks of Norwalk, Conn., and Keith Hicks of Manning; two daughters, Bernice Wilder of Manning and Ann H. Murray of Alcolu; a brother, Floyd “Tiny” Wilder of Manning; two sisters, Ann Holiday of Manning and Margaret M. Manigualt of Akron, Ohio; three aunts; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, in Manning, with the Rev. Jerome McCray presiding and assisted by the Rev. Northern Miller, Minister Sammie Murray and the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg as eulogist.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Albertis Lawson

Albertis “Tater” Lawson, the son of the late Bertha Lawson Johnson and the late Joseph Hilton, departed this life on July 14, 2005, at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston.

He was born June 5, 1955, in Summerton, Clarendon County. He was married to the late Ivory Lou Lawson.

Mr. Lawson attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he was a member of Historic Liberty Hill AME Church. He was employed as a security guard at Petty’s Pharmacy in Newark, N.J.

He is survived by a devoted daughter, Jane (Cliff) Willis of Norway; one son, Albertis Lawson Jr. of Olar; one granddaughter, Shantell Lawson of Bamberg; one brother, Franklin (Patricia) Johnson Jr. of Sumter; three sisters, Celestine (Ulysses) Bethea and Barbara Johnson of Summerton and Karima Abul-Latit of South Orange, N.J.; a stepfather, Franklin Johnson Sr. of Summerton; a special uncle, Tyrone Lawson of Summerton; one brother-in-law, Felder Willis of Olar.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 21, 2005 at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Melvin J. Capers officiating.

Burial was in the Ivory Cemetery, Davis Station.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Emma Mae Gibson

Emma Mae “Sudie” McFadden Stukes Gibson, 88, widow of John Henry Stukes Sr. and wife of William Gibson, died July 16, 2005, at Providence Hospital, Columbia.

Born March 18, 1917, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Jessie “Fleming” McFadden and Hattie Mae Thompson McFadden. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church. Her love for her church and community was shown through her willingness and commitment to serve as a dedicated member of the CBAA and in various committees at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband, William Gibson, include four sons, John Henry Stukes Jr., Lynvalle (Sharon) Stukes of Smyma, Ga., Vernard (Helen) Stukes and Ansanta “Tony” (Darlene) Stukes; four daughters, Bertha S. (Preston) Johnson, Shirley S. (Rochester) Johnson of El Paso, Texas, Minister Yvonne S. (Theoplis) Cooke of Bonaire, Ga., and Eloise (Charles) Conyers-Jackson; two brothers, Johnnie McFadden of Baltimore, Md., and Daniel McFadden; five sisters, Christine Georgia, Carolyn Teal, Beulah Black, Hattie Gibson and Rose Raleigh, all of Baltimore, Md.; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; five children she reared as her own, Jarrot Jackson, Moses (Marie) Jackson, Henry Jackson, John (May) Jackson and Joe (Elaine) Stukes of Atlanta; six stepchildren, Kamau (Edenau) Gibson, Julia Gibson, Joseph Gibson, Mamie Gibson, Mattie (Jessie) Smith and Tallie (Deborah).

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Kizer Edward, John Douglas and Jessie Jr.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 22, 2005, at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church, in the Silver community, with the Rev. O.J. Hannah, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Gussie Ceasar and the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.
