Pearl J. Smith

Pearl Jackson Smith, 98, widow of Marvin H. Smith Sr., died Thursday, July 20, 2006, at a local nursing center.

Born in the Jackson community of Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin James Jackson and Augusta Ardis Jackson. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Church of God, where she and her late husband were instrumental in organizing and locating the First Church of God in Sumter. She served in several capacities in earlier years. She was also a member and past worthy matron of Iris Chapter No. 149 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a retired licensed practical nurse, having worked at Hopewell Nursing Home and Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Surviving are a son, Marvin H. (Lillian) Smith Jr. of Turbeville; a daughter, Nancy S. (George) Rhine of Cohutta, Ga.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Jackson, and two sisters, Olive Jackson Kolb and Loree Jackson Mellette.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 23, 2006, in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Bower and the Rev. Claudie Osborne officiating.

Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Stan Smith, Scott Smith, Reid Smith, Richard Russell, Matthew Russell and Richard Taylor.

Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Order of Eastern Star, P.O. Box 343, Great Falls, S.C. 29055 or to the First Church of God, 1835 S.C. Hwy. 521 N., Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Moses Parker

Moses “Coot” Parker, 76, husband of Mary Dow Parker, died July 18, 2006, at his residence in Manning.

Born June 28, 1929, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Preston Parker and Louise Brunson Parker. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. “Coot,” as he was known, worked as a farmer for a period of time, a construction worker in Columbia, and he also worked for the City of Manning, prior to becoming disabled.

Survivors besides his wife, Mary Emma Parker of Manning, include four sons, Windell (Bessie) Parker, Isaiah (Evangeline) Parker, Willie (Margie) Parker and Jimmy Lee (Judy) Parker, all of Manning; two stepsons, Moses Lee (Barbara) Dow of Miami, Fla. and Albert Lee (Rosa Lee) Dow of Manning; two daughters, Mary Louise (Bernie) Montgomery and Aline Parker, both of Manning; one adopted daughter, Shirley Hawkins; one granddaughter he reared as his own, Clara Parker of Manning; four sisters, Lula Mae Dixon of Manning, Idella Dupree of Augusta, Ga., Ruth Ann Ford of Baltimore, Md. and Queen Gregg of Sumter; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and one son.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 22, 2006, at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, Davis Station community, Manning, with the Rev. Johnnie Lawson, pastor, officiating, assisting Minister Denise Junious and the Rev. Deloris Parker.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Henry D. Hester

COLUMBIA – Mr. Henry DuPre Hester, 43, died Saturday, July 22, 2006.

Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Theron Dill “Ted” Hester and Sara LuTelle Townsend Hester and former owner of Lexco Sales and Engineering Co. Inc.

Surviving are his son, Henry Clayton Hester II of Manning; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer Hester “Jenny” (Dr. Cleveland) Smith of Columbia; and niece and nephew, Sara Jennifer Smith and Walker Trammell Smith.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Hattie Mae C. Shepherd

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hattie Mae “Daughter” Ceasar Shepherd, 71, wife of Joe Shepherd, died July 12, 2005, at Beverly Healthcare Facility, Charlotte.

Born Aug. 29, 1933, in the Gable section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Marshall Ceasar Sr. and Louise Scott Ceasar. She received her formal education in the Melina Parochial School in Sardinia and joined Melina Presbyterian Church at an early age. She lived in New York for many years, moving to Tampa, Fla., later where she was employed by Barnett Bank. Later she moved to Charlotte.

Survivors besides her husband, Joe Shepherd of the home, include one daughter, Denise Shepherd of the home; two grandchildren, Deondra and Denntra Shepherd of the home; three brothers, Marshall Ceasar Jr. of Newark, N.J., David (Denise) Ceasar of Bronx, N.Y., and the Rev. Dr. Johnny L. (Haretha) Ceasar of Hartsdale, N.Y.; four sisters, Essie Ceasar, Sarah L. Ceasar and Charlie M. (Tony) Guyton, all of Bronx, and Mary Ceasar of New York City; and two aunts, Eula Redden of Bronx and Eula Ceasar of New Zion.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Melina Presbyterian Church, Sardinia, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret F. James

LYNCHBURG — Margaret Floyd James, age 76, died July 12, 2005, in a Florence nursing facility.

Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Otis Floyd and Verlie Alena Weaver Floyd. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and the ladies Sunday school class of the church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Floyd and Harold Floyd.

Surviving are a daughter, Connie (Glen) Dennis of Turbeville; a son, Neil Revere James of Lynchburg; two sisters, Myrlene Floyd Nesbitt of Lynchburg and Giovannia Floyd Amerson of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 15, 2005, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Playground Fund, 1000 Pleasant Grove Road, Lynchburg, S.C. 29080.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald E. Richburg

Donald Everett Richburg, 59, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at his home in Manning.

Born Feb. 20, 1947, in Manning, he was a son of Jeuil Maes and Nadine Richburg Richburg. He was a construction worker, a U.S. Army veteran and formerly attended Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his father of Manning are a brother, Gerald Richburg of Manning; a sister, Linda (Jerry) Strickland of Manning; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 16, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Tracy Benenhaley officiating.

Burial followed in Foreston Cemetery near Manning.

Pallbearers were Mike Tucker, Gerald Alsbrook, Paul Holliday, Terry Alsbrook, Ray Tucker and James Bryant.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Sammie Lee Dow

Sammie Lee Dow, 25, died July 8, 2006, at Rev. J.W. Carter Road.

Born July 6, 1981, in Manning, he was a son of Ulysses Dow and Rebecca Briggs Dow. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County.

Survivors besides his parents of Manning include two daughters, Amya Renee Dow and Shyne Lee Dow; two brothers, Otis Ulysses Dow and Ernest Dow, all of Manning; and one sister, Charlene Tomeka Dow of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 14, 2006, at Manning High School with the Rev. Eddie Lesaine officiating, assisting Pastor Ocelia Blue.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

James Britton Sr.

James “Lee” Britton, 59, husband of Susie Andrews Britton, died Friday, June 24, 2005, at Calvary Medical Center, Bronx, N.Y.

Mr. Britton was born in Clarendon County, on April 18, 1946, in the Summerton community. He was a son of Evelyn McFadden Britton and the late Vander Britton. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County School District 1. In his youth, he attended Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed as a construction worker.

Everlasting memories will be cherished by his wife, Susie Andrews Britton of the home; his mother, Evelyn M. Britton of Summerton; two sons, Al Britton and James Lee Britton Jr., both of Bronx; two daughters, Sylvia Dinkins and Evelyn Britton, both of Bronx; six sisters, Lucy Carter of Summerton, Victoria Brunson of White Plains, N.Y., Betty, Ann, Cora and Jean Britton, all of Bronx; two brothers, Vander Britton Jr. of Bronx and Thomas Britton of Summerton; and a host of grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 1, 2005, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Eva W. DuRant

Eva Laura Wells DuRant, 97, widow of Joseph Keller DuRant, died Tuesday, June 28, 2005, in National Healthcare of Sumter.

Born June 16, 1908, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late William Richard and Rivianna Fogle Wells. She was a graduate of Sumter High School and Winthrop College, and taught school in Orangeburg and Clarendon counties. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for many years. In 1994, Mrs. DuRant was inducted into the Clarendon District II Education Hall of Fame. She was active in many community projects, and was a charter member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Manning.

Survivors include a son, William Robert (Annie Maude) DuRant Sr. of Manning; a daughter, Laura D. (Sam) Phillips of Carthage, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 1, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating.

Burial followed in the DuRant-New Harmony Cemetery near Alcolu.

Memorials may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2833 Alex Harvin Highway, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Sallie Eva Holliday

BOSTON, Mass. — Sallie Eva Holliday, 84, widow of James Allen Holliday Sr., died June 28, 2005, at the home of her daughter.

Born June 2, 1921, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Jessie Goodman and the late Susanna Nelson Goodman. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and she was a lifelong member of Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church. She was employed with School District 2 for a number of years prior to her retirement.

Survivors include one son, James Allen Holliday Jr. of Boston; five daughters, Pauline Holliday-Dunson of Georgia, Shirley Holliday-Lloyd, Bobbie Holliday, Lynette Holliday and Catherine Mack, all of Boston; Alicestein Thames, who was reared by Mrs. Holliday; seven brothers, Jessie Goodman Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Willie Hayward Goodman and John Edward Goodman, both of Boston, Herbert Goodman, Harold Goodman, Sammy Goodman and Larry Goodman, all of Sumter; four sisters, Lucinda Epps of Manning, Marguerite Williams of New York, Dorothy Evans and Catherine Russell, both of Boston; 20 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a child, Alton “Nay” Holliday.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 3, 2005, at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. G.K. Carter officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.
