Lavon B. Rogers

Lavon Billups Rogers, 37, wife of Willie Rogers, died Monday, June 27, 2005, at University Hospital, Augusta, Ga.

Born April 21, 1968, in Manning, she was a daughter of Ernestine Cubit Billups Watkins and the late John “Pestsey” Billups and stepdaughter of John Watkins. She received her formal education at Manning High School and East Clarendon High School. As a young lady, she sought the need for her personal Savior and joined St. Mark Holiness Church, Lake City. She later moved her membership to Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband, Willie Rogers of the home, include two sons, Willie D. Rogers and Christopher, both of the home; two stepsons, Antonio Singletary and Willie Singletary, both of Lake City; one daughter, Shaniqua Rogers of the home; mother and stepfather, Ernestine (John) Watkins of New Zion; three brothers, John E. Billups Jr. and Tony Billups, both of Manning, and Micheal Baker of New Zion; five sisters, Sheryl Singletary of Turbeville, Sylvia Baker of New Zion, Michelle Baker of Tennessee, Betty J. Sharper and Amanda Workman, both of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 2, 2005, at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Old Georgetown Road, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn, pastor, officiating, assisting Minister Sinkler.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Leon Williams Sr.

Leon Williams Sr. departed this earthly life on Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at the Carolina Health Rehabilitation Center in Columbia.

Leon was born in Clarendon County, on Sept. 29, 1943. He was a son of Ethel Williams and Herbert Riley. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Chapel AME Church in Paxville. Leon was a veteran of the U.S. Army and later worked many years as a self-employed mechanic.

Leon leaves to cherish his fond and loving memory, his mother, Ethel Williams of Paxville; his wife, Virginia Brown Williams of Paxville; three sons, Tony Mellette of Manning, David Gooden of Pinewood and Leon Williams Jr. of Paxville; one daughter, Tarsha Williams of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, John (Ella Mae) Tindal of Pinewood; one uncle, Oscar Briggs; two aunts, Carrie L. Briggs and Dessie Wilson; five brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; two grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 3, 2005, at Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Paxville with the Rev. William Scott, pastor, assisting by Evangelist Linda Conyers.

Burial followed in the Conyers Cemetery in Paxville.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Ellinor Bates

LEXINGTON — Ellinor Gaillard Crawford Bates, 100, formerly of Wateree and Clemson, wife of the late Joseph McCord Bates, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, July 3, 2006.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Sloan and Wilhelmina Boyd Gaillard Crawford. She was a graduate of Sumter Girls High School and later was the first civilian hired at the opening of Shaw Air Force Base. Her family was longtime members of the Richland Presbyterian Church and was fully involved in the Lower Richland community until their move to Clemson in 1980. In 1954, Ellinor and Joe were recognized as S.C. Master Farm Family of the Year.

Mrs. Bates will be remembered for her love of sporting events. She followed her husband’s riding in the Camden Hunt, the Camden and Columbia Polo Clubs and lancing tournaments where she was often crowned queen of the event. As a rabid Tigers fan, she attended every game of Clemson’s national championship football season and continued to attend athletic events into her mid-90s. She was the oldest member of IPTAY by continuing her husband’s charter membership for 72 years.

Gifted with a green thumb, Ellinor was a member and past president of the Eastover Garden Club, where her talents were always recognized. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy and a lifetime member of the Huguenot Society of S.C.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law Neil Gaillard and Malinda Marshall Bates of Panama City, Fla., and Joseph McCord “Joe Mac” and Annie Coleman Bates of Irmo; grandchildren Malinda Catherine “Cay” Bates Heath of Warren, Pa., Teresa Crawford Bates Beverly of Orangeburg, Joseph McCord “Jo Jo” Bates III of Irmo, Jefferson Blakely Bates II of Columbia and Coleman Liston Bates of Irmo; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Richland Presbyterian Cemetery Fund, the Richland Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Home of S.C.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, July 8, 2006, in Old Richland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Old Bluff Road near Eastover. A memorial service was held on Friday, July 7, 2006 with Dr. William H. Boyd and Dr. Fran Bargan officiating.

Dunbar Funeral Home Devine Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Dingle

DURHAM, N.C. — Robert Dingle, 74, died July 1, 2006, at Durham Regional Hospital, Durham.

Born July 19, 1931, in the Jordan community of Manning, he was a son of the late Mose Dingle Sr. and Ida Smith Dingle. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Mount Chapel Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict. He retired after 31 years of service in the public school system of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Temoney of Fayetteville, N.C., Jennifer Dingle and Robin (Derrick) Dingle Lee, both of Durham; three brothers, Israel Dingle of Miami, Fla., Willie Dingle of Brooklyn and Mose Dingle Jr. of Sylvania, Ga.; four sisters, Isabella (Frank) Bugett of Brooklyn, Evelyn (Eddie) Wade of Hollywood, Fla., Margie (Columbus) Daney of Severn, Md., and Margaret Wade of Manning; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Mount Chapel Baptist Church, Jordan community, Manning, with the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon, pastor, officiating; assisting the Rev. Lee Earnest Dingle and Minister Sylvester Frazier.

Burial was in Hilton Cemetery.

Ruth Anne V. Santangelo

Ruth Anne VanDyke Santangelo, 77, wife of Francis J. Santangelo, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, in Asheville, N.C.

Born Nov. 22, 1928, in Wilmington, Del., she was a daughter of the late John and Emma Short VanDyke. She was a retired registered nurse, and a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning and Circle One of the Presbyterian Church at Manning.
Surviving besides her husband of Manning are a son, Michael John Santangelo of Manning; a daughter, Sharon Anne Liszczak of Manville, N.J.; and three grandchildren, Melanie, Gregory and Glenn Liszczak, all of New Jersey.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Briggs, Ferrell Cothran, Hal Kennedy, Dick Phillips, Carlton Quinzy and Doug Mouzon.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mamie S. Boone

Mamie Smith Boone died Saturday, July 2, 2005, at her home.

Born in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Joe Smith Sr. and the late Nora Keels Smith. She lived in New York for many years before relocating back to Summerton, where she has been ever since.

She wasn’t part of a church, but she believed in and trusted in God her whole life. She was a very kind-hearted person who would give her heart if she could have lived without it. Mamie will be missed and mourned by many. We will miss your dearly. In some ways, our hearts are at rest because we know you are at rest in God’s hands.

She leaves to cherish her memories Minnie S. Wright of Summerton, Lucretia Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Willene Doctor of Alexandria, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine S. Lawson; and four brothers, Willie, Harry, Rutlege and Joe Smith Jr.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 9, 2005, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Annie T. Jones

Annie Thompson Jones, 80, wife of the late Henry Jones, passed on Saturday, July 2, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Jan. 1, 1925, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Janie Thompson. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In 1964, she became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, where she served until the end.

Survivors include a daughter, Rallie Bell Jones of the home; a nephew she took as her son, Heyward Lindsay Jr. of Brunswick, Ga.; a sister, Lorean (Heyward) Lindsay Sr. of Davis Station; and an adopted daughter, Roberta Davis of Manning.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, July 7, 2005, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness in Pinewood, with Brother James Simmons officiating.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of the services.

Thomas H. Player

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Thomas Henry Player, 53, husband of Gwendolyn Regina Hicks Player, died Saturday, July 2, 2005, in Wilmington.

Born June 29, 1952, in Turbeville, he was a son of the late Arthur Player and Helen McFadden Player. He obtained his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was employed in Philadelphia, Pa., for more than 23 years in the trucking industry.

Survivors include three daughters, Lakeshia Mitchell Player, Tamika January Player and Felicia Monique Player; four brothers, Luke Player, Joseph Player, Luther Player and Sam Player; seven sisters, Mary Pressley, Mary Francis Fleming, Lillie Mae (Nathaniel) Ham, Helena Wilson, Martha Williams, Elizabeth Quattlebaum and Annie Prince; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 9, 2005, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Turbeville, with the Rev. Zander Davis officiating.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

David A. Swain

David Allen Swain, 60, husband of Linda Evans Swain, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at his home in New Zion.

Born Sept. 21, 1945, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Wordis C. Swain Sr. and the late Sadie Tuten Swain. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina, and was a digital technician for Bell South, and a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.

Surviving besides his wife of New Zion are two daughters, Celeste McElveen of Cades and Jennifer (Kirk) Smith of Charleston; two brothers, Cedron Swain of Charleston and Reggie Swain of Abbeville; two sisters, Glenda Howell and Sara Livingston of Charleston; and four grandchildren, Edward McElveen, Emily McElveen, Kirkland Smith and Ashleigh Smith.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 8, 2006, in Midway Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Rodney A. Foster officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church, c/o Wendell Robinson, 2029 Greeleyville Highway, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Rory C. Crawford Sr.

Rory Christopher Crawford Sr., 27, husband of Leslie Dawn Lowe Crawford, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Ronnie H. Crawford Jr. and Dulcie Cox Wilder. Mr. Crawford was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church and was employed by Sumter Chrysler Dodge.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his father of Greenville; his mother of Sumter; his stepmother, Rene Crawford of Sumter; a son, Rory Christopher Crawford Jr. of Sumter; two stepchildren, Heavenly Lowe and Brandon Goncalves of Sumter; a brother, Mark Wilder of Manning; two sisters, Camille Crawford of Sumter and Christi Crawford of Greenville; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Crawford Sr. of Sumter; aunts; and uncles.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 10, 2005, at Faith Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Andrew E. Basham officiating.

Burial followed in the Olanta Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Faith Presbyterian Church, 65 Lynam Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.
