Catherine Hobby

Betty Catherine “Cathy” Hobby, age 57, died Friday, June 10, 2005, at a Sumter nursing facility.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Virginia Lucille Robinson Teal. Ms. Hobby was a self-employed taxi driver.

She was preceded in death by her mother; her grandmother, Claudia Coker; an aunt, Pearl Ruby; and an uncle, Stanley Coker.

She is survived by a sister, Barbara (Ronnie) Williams of Hixson, Tenn.; two aunts, Mary Ann (Larry) Coker of Turbeville, Cornelia (Dennis) Williams of Louisville, Ky.; three uncles, J.C. (Grace) Robinson of Charleston, Sanford (Carolyn) Robinson and Erby Davis Coker, all of Turbeville; three nieces, Lyn Robertson of Nashville, Tenn., Shannon Perkins and Alyson Williams of Hixson, Tenn.; four great nephews, Trey, Will, Sam and Drew; and a host of cousins from the Robinson/ Coker/Teal families.

The family would like to express their deepest thanks to Mrs. Geraldine Coker, the Pine Grove Baptist Church on Old Manning Highway and the employees of the Sumter National Bank on Bultman Drive who lovingly cared for Cathy during the last several months.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 13, 2005, at the Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Tri-County Hospice, 1236 Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Felix King Jr.

Felix King Jr., 65, husband of Mary Helen Gibson King, died Monday, June 6, 2005, at his residence.

He was born in Clarendon County, July 13, 1939, to the late Felix King Sr. and Retta Flood King. He was a 1958 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He was owner and operator of King Trucking Co. He was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. On Dec. 24, 1961, he was joined in holy wedlock to the former Susie V. Lawson and to this union four children were born.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Gibson King of Summerton; one son, Randall King of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Tereva Adams of Catonsville, Md., Terveer and Surena King, both of Columbia, Md.; two stepsons, Lawrence and Jamal Gibson of Summerton; six sisters, Mary (Gene) Watson Sr. of Washington, D.C., Susie Ferrell and Willean (Ervin) Dingle, both of Baltimore, Md., Maxine Oliver of Washington, D.C., Loretta (Thomas) Jacobs of Magnolia, N.J., Larnell King of Lindenwold, N.J.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson presiding, assisted by the Rev. Melvin J. Capers, Warren Hatcher and Bernard Richburg.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of services.

Raye O. PlowdenRaye O. Plowden

COLUMBIA — Janie Raye Odom Plowden, 86, widow of Wallace S. Plowden Jr., died Thursday, June 9, 2005, at her daughter’s home in Jonesboro, Ga.

Born Feb. 8, 1919, in Clarendon County, she was one of eight children of the late LeRoy and Frances Witherspoon Odom. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Columbia. She was a homemaker and will be remembered for the immaculate home she kept and all the wonderful meals she provided for her family and friends. Her children will remember her as a loving mother, friend and adviser. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are her daughter and caregiver, Edith P. (Henry L.) Yongue of Jonesboro; a son, Wallace S. “Bubba” (Brenda C.) Plowden III of Lexington; a brother, E.W. Odom of Alcolu; four sisters, Edna Broach of Minnesota, Lorena Fann of Lexington, Mary Ellenburger of Indiana, and Lucille Johnson of Sumter; three grandchildren, Sarah Yongue, Rayna Plowden and John Plowden.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 12, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3100 Covenant Road, Columbia, S.C. 29204 or the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Suite 300, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

John Walters Jr.

John Walters Jr., 50, died June 6, 2005, in Manning.

Born April 1, 1955, in the Summerton section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late John Walters Sr. and Rutha Lee Brailsford Walters. He received his formal education at Scott’s Branch High School, Summerton. He was known as a jack of all trades. He was affectionately called “Duke.”

Survivors include four brothers, Jessie Doughty of Summerton, David (Skippy) Walters of Manning, Robert L. (Doris) Walters of Charlotte, N.C., and Donald (Carol) Walters of Kershaw; and six sisters, Gussie Morris of Miami, Fla., Betty (Allen) Cousar of Greenville, Kay Felder of Manning, Carolyn (John) Butler, Willastine (William) Harrison and Janie (George) Pearson, all of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, in Manning, with the Rev. Rosa M. Fulton, pastor, presiding, assisting Pastor Mary Bowman and Minister Lewis Hilton.

Burial followed in Clarendon Healing Temple cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

William C. Boines

William C. Boines Sr., husband of the late Bessie Rebecca Barfield Boines, died June 12, 2005, at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

Born in Gable, on Oct. 19, 1919, he was a son of the late Rev. Hugh “Jake” Boines and Louise Weary Boines. He was a member of Saint Albans Presbyterian Church in Saint Albans, Queens, N.Y. He was one of the founding members of Starlight Quartet and later formed a second group called the Boines Brothers. In 1968, he founded the Saint Albans Monarch Team, becoming the first African-American to establish a baseball team in an inner city in the U.S. Then in 1976, Mr. Boines founded the Saint Albans Little League and became the first African-American to obtain a chapter for Little League baseball, which was apart of the Stan Musial Eastern Division of Little League Baseball in America. The Little League served 500-700 children each year, until 1997. He was instrumental in establishing three baseball fields in Queens, one of which bears the name of William and Bessie Boines in St. Albans. Mr. Boines was employed at the Brundy Corp. until his retirement in 1981.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie; daughter, Sandra Fordham; sons, Harold Boines and Richard Barfield.

Surviving are a son, William Boines Jr. of Richmond, Va.; three daughters, Vernessa Boines of Richmond, Vera Al-Sabur of Columbus, Ohio, and Barbara Jackson of Alcolu; one sister, Janie Swinton of Rockway, Queens; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 17, 2005, at the Palmer Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Franklin D. Colclough officiating.

Burial followed in the Barfield Cemetery.

Evelyn R. Singleton

Evelyn Reid “Red” Singleton, 53, wife of Harold Singleton, died June 12, 2005, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born Aug. 19, 1951, in the Alcolu community, she was a daughter of the late Willie Brodgon and the late Dora Reid and reared by the late Daniel and Geneva Sheriod. She was a graduate of Manning Training School and furthered her education at MUSC and F.E. DuBose Vocational Center. She was a member of Green Hill Baptist Church and served as a member of the deaconess and usher boards. She was employed with MUSC prior to her employment with Kaycee Corp., Manning.

Survivors include one daughter, India Singleton of Manning; two sisters, Cassandra Sheriod of Alcolu and Linda Henderson of Charlotte, N.C.; and a dear friend, Dr. Beryl Bachus-Keith.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Daniel Sheriod Jr., and one sister, Pamela Sheriod Gilyard.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 16, 2005, at Green Hill Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Revs. James Hudley and W.J. Frierson, Ministers David Woods, Sylvia Whitaker and Rebecca York. Burial will be in Green Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Harry Georgia

Harry Georgia, age 47, died on Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 26, 1957, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late David Georgia and Corine Dozier Georgia. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he attended Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed by Econo Lodge of Santee, until his health failed.

He is survived by a son, David Antonio Baxter of Summerton; three brothers, James, Clarence (Shirley) Georgia, and the Rev. Jeremiah Georgia, all of Summerton; and three sisters, Rosa, Sue and Mary Georgia, all of Summerton.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 25, 2005 at St. Mark AME Church of Summerton with the Rev. Ernest Brown officiating.

Burial was in the Ivory Cemetery, Davis Station.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Jean E. Kohl

Jean Elmore Kohl, 80, died Friday, June 24, 2005, at her home.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late I.D. Elmore Sr. and the late Juanita Phillips Elmore. Mrs. Kohl was a member of First Baptist Church. She was formerly employed by Philadelphia Life Insurance Co. and also retired from Southern Coatings with 20 years of service.

Surviving are a daughter, Pam Kohl Coffer of Columbia; two sons, William Edward Kohl III of Summerton and Deaver Elmore Kohl of Sumter; five grandchildren, Billie Jean Coffer Nickas, Casey Coffer, Hunter Coffer and Justin Kohl, all of Columbia, Kristin Kohl of Florence; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, I.D. Elmore Jr., Earl Elmore, and Bobby Elmore.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Bertha Grinnell and Viola Moses, her friends and caregivers for the past year.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Ryan Pack and the Rev. Charles Clanton officiating.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 867, Sumter, S.C. 29151.

Frindinia N. Scott

Frindinia “Crow” Needham Scott was born Dec. 17, 1969, in Belleglades, Fla., a loving daughter of Louise Brownlee and Earnest Stokes. She died Monday, June 13, 2005.

She received her primary education at Charles R. Drew. At an early age, she attended Arthur Hall Memorial Church of God in Christ, where she attended with her mother, sister and brothers.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bruce Scott Jr. of the home; four children, Stanley Harris, Anthony Harris, Tierra Harris and Totiana Harris, all of the home; her mother, Louise Brownlee of Florida; one sister, Angela Lee of Manning; two brothers, John Matthew Brownlee of Paxville and Daniel Charles Brownlee of Pompono Beach, Fla.; a very special cousin, Patricia Cohen of Wedgefield; a very special friend, Crystal Brown; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Willie James Brownlee, and two aunts, Vera Tucker and Lovie Dell Arrington, a favorite aunt.

Funeral services for Mrs. Scott were held on Friday, June 24, 2005, in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with Bishop Raymond Holliday officiating, assisted by Minister Willie White and Minister Walter Epps.

Burial followed in the Bradford Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
