Stella H. Berry

Stella Hicks Berry, 86, widow of John Olin Berry, died Friday, May 26, 2006, at her home in Manning.

Born Nov. 29, 1919, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Martin Lane and Isabelle “Jim” Keels Hicks. She was retired from Manning Manufacturing and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Jeanne B. Wellman of Manning; a son, Richard W. (Lynn) Berry of Manning; a sister, Pauline Elmore of Alcolu; four grandchildren, Charles Ward, Mike Stone, Jeff Lee and Dana (Brian) Strait; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Johnny and Erica Stone.

She was preceded in death by a son, John Olin Berry Jr.; a granddaughter, Wynn Ward Stone; a brother, Alton Hicks; and three sisters, Coley Ruff, Pearl McElveen and Muriel Beatson.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 29, 2006, in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.
Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brian Strait, Mike Stone, Cody Stone, Johnny Stone, Charles Ward, Jeff Lee, Johnny Burke and Martin Beatson.

Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Tuomey Hospice, 115 N. Sumter St., Suite 410, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Alcena H. Mahoney

Alcena Holliday Mahoney, 89, widow of J.P. Mahoney, died Monday, May 22, 2006, at her home.

Born Aug. 7, 1916, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Howard Holliday and the late Annie Shorter Holliday.

Mrs. Mahoney was a member of Lemira Presbyterian Church, where she had been an active member in the ladies’ circle. She worked for many years at the Eleanor Shop in Sumter. She lived the golden rule, enjoyed reading her Bible, working in her flower garden, needlework, cooking and being with her family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include a son, Preston (Julie) Mahoney of Sumter; three daughters, Gerry (Michael) Kowalchuck of Youngstown, N.Y., Annette (Raymond) McClouskey of Camden, Del. and Lynn (Jeff) Fazzone of Milton, Vt.; eight grandchildren, Dr. Alicia Kowalchuck and her husband, Dr. Benjamin Saldana, James C. (Laura) Mahoney, Sheryl (Bradfors) Sabario, Raymond (Taryn) McClouskey Jr., Robert (Angela) Mahoney, Jimmy Fazzone, Michael Fazzone, and Angela Fazzone; six great-grandchildren, Katelynn Mahoney, Brice Cornett, Nicholas Sabario, Hope McClouskey, Savannah Mahoney, and Olivia Sabario; two sisters, Francis Saunders of Sumter and Jimmie Smith of Blue Ridge, Ga.; two brothers, Harmon Holliday of Manning and Marshall Holliday of Sumter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 25, 2006, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Andrew Basham and the Rev. Barry Ella Jr. officiating.

Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Associa-tion, 320 Gervais St., Suite 300, Columbia, S.C. 29260-6604, or to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150-1893.

Danny H. Smith Sr.

Danny Hugh Smith Sr., 76, widower of the late Mae Timmons Smith, died Monday, May 22, 2006, at his home.

Born April 7, 1930, in Leo, he was a son of the late Herbert Benjamin and Eulee Kirby Smith. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp and National Defense Service Medal. He was a retired mechanic from Plowden Ford and a member of Black River American Legion. He attended Turbeville First Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Dyann (Henry) Morris of Turbeville, Adell (Glen) Barfield and Janice Parrot of Lake City; four sons, Danny H. (Regina) Smith Jr. of Brewton, Ala., Barry Smith of North Charleston, Timmy (Janice) Smith of Pace, Fla. and Herbie (Jessie) Smith of North Kingstree; three brothers, H.B. Smith of North Kingstree, Reynolds Smith of Salters, and Ariel Smith of Fort Wayne, Ind.; seven sisters, Catherine Duke of Timmonsville, Dell Prosser, Janie Knight, Rhunette Belue and Linda Williamson of Kingstree, Brooks Jackson of Fort Wayne and Nita Yarborough of New Zion; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 26, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Burial with military honors followed in New Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery at New Zion.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Donald D. Folkers

Donald Dean Folkers, 75, husband of Harriette Medlin Folkers, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Nov. 18, 1929, in Allison, Iowa, he was a son of the late Herbert and Sylva Bird Folkers. He was first married to the late Ruth Branch Folkers. He was a retired Deputy Base Civil Engineer for Shaw Air Force Base, an Air Force veteran and pilot achieving the rank of Captain and an Air Force Reserve Major. He was a graduate of Iowa State University and the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Folkers was a member of Summerton Presbyterian Church and a Shriner with Hillcrest Lodge.

Surviving are his wife of Summerton; a son, Phillip (Becky) Folkers of Columbia; a daughter, Lisa F. (Rodney) Kee of Sumter; two stepdaughters, Tonya Bradley (Ronald) Alexander and Vicki Bradley (Jeffrey) Preast both of Sumter; a brother, Calvin Folkers of Oklahoma City, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Erin, Alex, William, Hannah, Dustin, Bryanna and Megan.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 30, 2005, in Summerton Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Garland Hart and Richard Hudson officiating.

Burial followed in Sumter Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Presbyterian Church, 16 S. Cantey St., Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Joe Scott

Joe “Scotty Boy” Scott, 62, husband of Louise Conyers Scott, departed this life on Saturday night, May 21, 2005, at his home.

He was born Sept. 8, 1942, in Clarendon County, a son of the late David Scott and Adrie Washington Scott. Mr. Scott received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Mulberry Baptist Church.

His survivors include his wife, Louise Conyers Scott of Sumter; three daughters, Evonza Wilson of Hilton Head, Bridgette Bennett of Sumter and Martha Shropshire of Decatur, Ga.; four sons, Michael (Sylvia) Wilkes of New York, N.Y., Donald Conyers of Sumter, Joseph Scott and Malachi Scott, both of Newark, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lula Mae Thompson of Myrtle Beach, Audrey Felder and Plummie (Jimmy) Green, both of Sumter; one brother, David (Hattie Mae) Scott of Sumter; one son-in-law, Barron Crittenden of Decatur; and a host of nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, one uncle, one aunt, other relatives and dear friends who are deeply grieved by his passing.

Mr. Scott was preceded in death by one sister, Rosa Lee Daniels; two brothers, Sammie Scott and Walter Scott; a son-in-law, McArthur Bennett; and a nephew, Lorenzo Scott.

Services for Mr. Scott were held on Saturday, May 28, 2005, in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating.

Burial followed in the Walker Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Ronald N. Yarbrough

Ronald “Ronnie” Nathan Yarbrough, 43, husband of Valerie Nunnery Yarbrough, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Fort Bragg, N.C., he was a son of Jerry Nathan Yarbrough and Mary Kate Jones Yarbrough. Mr. Yarbrough attended Lakeside Outreach Ministry at Santee and was employed by Prothro Chevrolet in Manning.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his mother of Sumter; his father of Manning; a son, Ronald Yarbrough Jr. of Sumter; two daughters, Ashley Phillips and Tuesday Yarbrough, both of Sumter; three brothers, Gary Yarbrough of Manning, Rusty Yarbrough and Jeffery Yarbrough, both of Sumter; two stepsisters, Stephanie Mims of Leesville and Dana Yarbrough of Sumter; two grandchildren, Braxton Nathan Phillips and Anna Dawn Marie Jenkins.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 28, 2005, in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Griffin officiating.

Burial followed in Green Acres Cemetery.

Chris Cooper

Sally Christine “Chris” Cooper, 52, wife of John C. Cooper, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, in McLeod Hospital in Florence.

Born December 19, 1952, in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, she was a daughter of William B. Cooper and the late Mildred Horton Cooper. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning and father of Memphis, Tennessee, are stepmother, Nadine Cooper of Memphis; daughter, Rebecca (James) Culbertson of Belton; son, Daniel (Jenny) Cooper of Land O’Lakes, Fla; three sisters, Arlene Cooper of Los Angeles, Calif., Cindy Pennington of Memphis, and Lisa Zamora of Frisco, Texas; three stepbrothers, Tim, David and Paul Cooper of Memphis; three grandchildren, Alissa, Bobbi-Jo and Cooper Culbertson.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, June 8, 2005, in Greenville Memorial Gardens, Greenville, S.C., with the Rev. Charles Rice officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Animal Shelter of Clarendon County, P. O. Box 414, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Thelmer Bethune

Mr. Thelmer Bethune died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in the Silver community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Mr. John Bethune and the late Mrs. Mary Gibson Bethune.

He was first married to the late Mattie Johnson Bethune and later to the late Pearl Brailsford Bethune.

For several years he was a member of Mt. Zero Baptist Church. He later joined Rock Hill Baptist Church, where he attended regularly prior to his illness. He was a staunch champion of the civil rights movement. He was a charter member of the Manning Branch NAACP, a member of the Executive Board, Clarendon County Voters League, Democratic Caucus, School District 2, and Brotherly Love Lodge No. 99 F & AM.

Survivors include children, Lil M. Robinson of Philadelphia, Pa., Elenora Richardson of Eatontown, Pa., Walter (Estell) Bethune and Dorothy (Frank) Ladson, both of Pinewood, John H. (Brenda) Bethune of Rembert, Willean (Ozias) Gary of Clinton, Md., Selena Bethune of Sumter and Cleo (Brenda) Bethune of Kew Gardens, N.Y.; an adopted daughter, Cynthia Bethune of Sumter; a sister, Adviana Johnson of Bronx, N.Y.; and a nephew, Jon Steven of the home.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Manning Elementary School, with the Revs. O’Donald Dingle, J.H. Pringle, Dr. James Stukes and Dr. Marion Newton officiating.

Burial was in the Clark-Gibson Cemetery in Paxville.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home and Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Willie Conyers

Mrs. Willie (Lizzie) Conyers died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in the Sugar Hill community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ambrose Tucker Mallett and the late Gracie Lucas Mallett.

She was a graduate of Allen University in Columbia and taught in the public schools of Clarendon County for several years until retirement. She was a member of Providence AME Church and served in numerous capacities prior to her illness. Other organizations included New Light Chapter No. 254 OES, Manning Branch NAACP and National Council of Negro Women Inc.
She is survived by a brother, Edward Ulysees (Anne S.) Mallett of Dillon.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Providence AME Church in the Sugar Hill community of Clarendon County with the Rev. Archie Fair, the Rev. Dr. C. Richburg and the Rev. Daryl Ellerby officiating.

Burial will be in Providence AME Church Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Terry A. Isenhoward

WEST COLUMBIA – Terry Anne Isenhoward, 47, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, in Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia.
Born Sept. 1, 1958, in Columbia, she was a daughter of Thomas Richbourg Sr. and the late Barbara Christie Richbourg. She was a very outgoing and loving person who had many friends who will miss her dearly. She loved taking care of others and was a member of SC Cares. Terry loved to cook and was a very hardworking woman who operated a house-cleaning business.

Surviving are her father of Summerton; a son, Thomas Bratton McGregor of Alabama; three brothers, Tommy Richbourg Jr. of West Columbia, Sam Richbourg of Atlanta, Ga., and Guy Richbourg of McCormick; an aunt, Essie Mae “Tess” Fetherolf of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and a niece, Jennifer Stalvey.

She was preceded in death by her mother and a sister, Kim Stalvey.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, June 8, 2006, in Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Emily Allen officiating.

Memorials may be made to Andrews Chapel UMC, c/o Sarah Coulliette, 15149 Panola Road, Pinewood, S.C. 29125.
