Everett N. Scott

Everett N. Scott, Sr., 63, husband of Shirley Goff Scott, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005.

Born in Paxville, he was a son of the late Richard Manning Scott and the late Gladys Kolb Scott.

He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and also attended Sumter Baptist Temple. He was retired from Zeigler Construction Co.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, Rhett Scott of Durham, N.C., and Mark D. Scott of Elkins, W.Va.; three sisters, Carrie Lee Ardis of Paxville, Gladys E. Burke of North Santee and Annette Ridgill of North Santee; six brothers, F.D. Scott and Leslie Scott, both of Charleston, Stanley Scott of Summerville, Wayne Scott of Georgia, Ronald Howard “Willie” Scott of Manning and Floyd Scott of Paxville; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 30, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Scott officiating.

Burial was in Pinewood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church Building Fund, 120 Pinewood Road, Sumter, S.C. 29154.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

John R. Williams

ANDERSON – John Randolph Williams, 75, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Anderson Memorial Hospital in Anderson.

Born March 14, 1930, in Richmond, Va., he was a son of the late Wesley Williams and Sarah Witherspoon Williams. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was employed for many years with Armstrong Floor and Tile Corp. in Lancaster, Pa. He was also an entrepreneur for many years.

Survivors include a companion, Janie Reeves; two sons, Stephen Randolph Williams of Dumfries, Va., and John Anthony Williams of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Darlene Coulibaly and Gloria Williams, both of Laurel, Md.; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 30, 2005, in the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Gussie Ceasar officiating.

Burial was in St. Matthews Cemetery, Hwy. S.C. 261, Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC was in charge of arrangements.

Archie Ray Foster

Archie Ray Foster, 55, husband of Linda Richards Foster, died May 5, 2005.

Born in Hickory Knob, Ky., he was a son of the late Reese and Mildred Shoopman Foster. Mr. Foster was employed by PB&J Heating and Air Conditioning Inc. for 20 years and was a retired staff sergeant of the Army National Guard with 20 years of service. He was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Rickey and his wife Sarah Foster of Paxville and William Foster of Sumter; daughters, Teresa and her husband Michael Goodwin of Sumter and Frances and her husband Rickey Robinson of Pike County, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

Graveside services with military honors were held on Monday, May 9, 2005, in Florence National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Sumter Freewill Baptist Church of the Pentecostal Faith, 971 Boulevard Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Joan F. Phillips

OZARK, Ala. – Joan Frierson Phillips, of Ozark, passed away Monday, May 3, 2005, in Flowers Hospital, after a short illness. She was 74.

Mrs. Phillips was born March 14, 1931, in Jamestown, N.C. She was raised in Summerton and was a member of the Summerton Presbyterian Church. She was a business graduate of the University of South Carolina. After marrying in 1955, Mrs. Phillips spent the next 20 years as a military wife, mother and grandmother. She traveled much of the world and served in several capacities as a teacher, administrator and a member of the diplomatic community in U.S. Embassy overseas. After her husband retired in 1975, Mrs. Phillips and her family settled in Ozark. She quickly became a “mom” to many in the community and she is dearly loved by all who knew her. She was actively involved in the Dothan Service League and was a constant contributor to the success of the United Ostomy Association at Flowers Hospital in Dothan. She will always be remembered by those who love her as someone who forged the path of friendship to any and all with whom she met.

Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her mother and father, Gilland and Roma Frierson, and brother, Alfred Frierson.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, James W. Phillips; son, John Allen Phillips of Newnan, Ga.; daughter, Audrey Phillips Bennett of Dothan, Ala.; one brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Ann Frierson of Summerton; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 6, 2005, at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Ozark, with Dr. William Bennett of Wilmington, N.C., officiating.

J.C. Weldon

J.C. Weldon, 65, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at his home.

Born Oct. 26, 1939, in Orangeburg, he was a son of Laurie Montgomery Weldon and the late Blease Weldon Sr.

Mr. Weldon received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and later moved to New York City and Connecticut, where he lived and worked most of his adult life.

After moving back home with his mother he worked in the community doing various jobs.

Survivors besides his mother include a daughter, Marie Blackmon Weldon of New York; three bothers, Leon, Eddie and Eric Weldon, all of Manning; a sister, Mary Frances (Pearsten) Kinsler of New York City; three aunts, Natalie and Lou Mae Weldon of Vance and Mary Lee (Aaron) Lemon of Sumter and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Blease Weldon Jr.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at the Hayes F. Sameuls Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning.

The Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough will officiate with the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richbourg serving as eulogist and the Rev. Michael Abraham assisting.

Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Samuel Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Roberta T. Abraham

Roberta Tindal Abraham, 84, widow of Benjamin Abraham, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, after a brief illness, at Carroll Hospital in Eldersburg, Md.

Born Aug. 20, 1920, in the Silver community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Marion Tindal and Mamie Cooper Tindal. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Manning Training High School in Manning.

She made an early commitment to Christ and became a member of Friendship AME Church in Silver. Roberta moved to Maryland in 1943 and became a dedicated member of Davis Memorial AME Church, where she served in many capacities over the years.

Survivors include one son, Benjamin (Yvonne) Abraham Jr.; one daughter, Carolyn Abraham (David) Walters; one sister, Lucille T. (Gerald) Washington; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Cleveland Tindal and Alphoso Tindal Sr.; and one sister, Frances P. Richburg.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 16, 2005, in the chapel of Wylie Funeral Home, Radallstown, Md.

Bernard Galloway

Bernard “Bernell” Galloway, 45, died May 10, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 18, 1959, in Sumter County, he was a son of Bertha Mae Galloway Calhoun and the late James Ervin Montgomery and stepson of Richard Calhoun. He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County, graduating from Sumter High School in 1977. He was formerly employed with Cover Manufacturing and Newman’s Farms.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Bertha Mae and Richard Calhoun, of Sumter; seven brothers, Willie Galloway, Richard Eric Calhoun, John (Louise) Montgomery and Eric Simon, all of Sumter, James (Karen) Montgomery of Manning, Johnny Montgomery of Durham, N.C., and Brian (Debra) Montgomery of Arlington, Texas; six sisters, Tammy D. Calhoun of New Haven, Conn., Betty Jean (Frank) Bennett, Shirley Pressley, Tracey (Darryl) Simmons and Tonya (Timothy) Scott, all of Sumter, and Almetis (Bill) Bolden of Goldsboro, N.C.; a brother-in-law, the Rev. Ray Ingram of Sumter; 15 aunts; 11 uncles; play mother, Easter Ladson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Calhoun Ingram.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at St. James Progressive Holiness Church, with Pastor Eddie Johnson officiating, assisted by Elder Ray K. Ingram, eulogist.

Burial was in St. James Cemetery.

Furman L. Mitchum Sr.

PORT ORANGE, Fla – Furman Luvine Mitchum Sr., 79, husband of Aires Mitchum, died Monday, May 9, 2005, at his home in Port Orange, Fla.

Born in Manning, he was a son of the late Deschamps and Alma Frierson Mitchum.

Graveside services were held on Friday, May 13, 2005, in Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery in Manning.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of local arrangements.

Diane K. Pearson

LYNCHBURG – Diane “Ann” Keels Pearson, 42, of Lynchburg, wife of Willie Pearson, died May 17, 2005, at her home. She was born Nov. 13, 1962, to the late John Wallace and Mary Jane Epps Keels.

She attended the public schools in Sumter County and was a 1980 graduate of Mayewood High School. She was employed by HRS Textile in Darlington. At an early age, she joined Asbury United Methodist Church and later joined Restoration and Deliverance Outreach Ministry, where she served faithfully as a member of the Usher Board, Communion Usher, Lay Speaker and wherever her talents were needed.

Survivors include one daughter, Fredreshia McCullum; one son, Elton Graham; two nieces reared as her own, Roshonda and Jennifer Keels; one great niece, Logan Keels all of the home; a step-son, Scott McCray of Sumter; a step-daughter, Wanda Prince of Columbia; special friend, Dennis Jordan of Florence; four brothers, Deacon Wallace (Evangelist Rhonda) Keels of Manning, Johnny (Dorothy) Keels, Reynold (Mary) Keels, both of Lake City, and Steven (Sabrina) Keels of Germany; five sisters, Sharon (Gerald) Witherspoon of Turbevile, Jennifer (Rodney) Keels of Lynchburg, Stacie (Jermaine) Goodley of Sumter, Gracie (Emanuel) Mack of Manning, Icybell (Reynold) Lowery of Lynchburg; three nephews reared in the home, Quincy, Demarcus and Jermaine; maternal grandfather, Gilbert Fullwood of Lynchburg; mother-in-law, Virginia Pearson of Turbeville; nine sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Priscilla Greene, Lendora and Felicia Keels and a brother, Wendell Keels.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 23, 2005, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lynchburg. The Rev. John C. Barr, pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Winnie Walker, the Rev. Zander Davis, Prophet Tonnie Felder and Pastor Minnie Pearl Johnson.

Burial followed in Goodman Cemetery in Lynchburg.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Thornwell Anderson Jr.

Thornwell “Noy” Anderson Jr., 74, widower of the late Alice Vermell Ragin Anderson and husband of Sarah Jones Anderson, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at Carolina Regency Hospital, Florence.

Born Jan. 19, 1931, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Thornwell Anderson Sr. and Ola Owens Anderson. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in the Jordan community of Manning. He was a machine operator for West Vaco Corp., where he retired, and Superior Manufacturing for more than 17 years.

Survivors besides his wife, Sarah J. Anderson, include one son, Thornwell (Irene) Anderson III of Manning; nine daughters, Dorothy (George) Nelson of Alcolu, Vermell (William) McFadden, Juanita (Fladger) Parson, Deloris (James) Hilton, Inez (Anthony) Jones, Rosa Ann (Leo) Hilton, Gloria (Leroy) Thompson, Shirley (Willie) Simon and Louise (Johnny) Johnson, all of Manning; three brothers, Albert (Clara) Anderson of Manning, Wallace Anderson of Buffalo, N.Y., and Hazel Anderson of Cleveland; three sisters, Sarah J. (J.C.) Clark of Manning, Elease Anderson of Philadelphia, and Mary L. Mack of Buffalo; 27 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two additional children he reared as his own, Patrica Lee and Sharon Lee, both of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by one son, Lewis Anderson; one sister, Estell Betrand; and two brothers, Moses Anderson and Thorn Anderson.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 25, 2005, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Antonio K. Lee, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rebecca York, the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon, Elder James Betrand and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.

Burial was in Antioch Memorial Garden.
