Mary A. Stephen

BISHOPVILLE – Mary Frances Ardis Stephen, 83, wife of the late Oliver Whiteford Stephen Sr., died on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at her residence.

She was born in Pinewood, a daughter of the late Lee Washington Ardis and Sarah Susie Tobias Ardis. She was formerly employed by Campbell Soup Co. and The Manning Manufacturing Co. She was a member of the Pinewood Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, William Keith Stephen of Manning; two daughters, Pandora Stephen of Bishopville and Mary Avins and her husband, Jesse, of Sumter; two brothers, James C. Ardis of Sumter and Charles Ardis of Pinewood; a sister, Susie Brown of Durham, N.C.; special granddaughter, Caitlyn Charlton of Sumter; six grandchildren, Lewis Mathis, Dawn Stephen, Joy Stephen Joyner, Eric Stephen, Kodi Stephen and Tiffany Charlton Driggers; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Oliver Whiteford “Whitey” Stephen; a brother, Lee Willard Ardis; and two sisters, Stella Johnson and Hattie Brown.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at the Clarendon Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Shorter officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Mid-State S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202-7044 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Bernise H. Johnson

Bernise Hilton Johnson, widow of Joe Lewis Johnson, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 21, 1937, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Davis Hilton and the late Lucille Dingle Hilton. She was a member of Society Hill AME Church and served as a member of the missionary society and stewardess board number two. In 1987, she retired from the housekeeping and laundry department, Clarendon Memorial Hospital, after 17 years of service.

Survivors include one daughter, Pinese (Edward) Carter of Sumter; three brothers, Feddie (Ruby Lee) Hilton, Edward (the Rev. Effie) Hilton and William (Lillie Mae) Hilton; five sisters, Elease Hilton, Daisy Scott, Regetha (Kervin) Clark, Louise Hilton and Mary Hicks; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Joe William Johnson.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Society Hill AME Church with the Rev. Malachi Gibson, the Rev. Moses Wilson, the Rev. Leroy Green, the Rev. O’Donald Dingle, the Rev. Effie Hilton and Evangelist Rebecca York officiating.
Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Paul W. McLeod

Paul W. McLeod, 50, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at his home.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late J.W. “Bill” McLeod Jr. and the late Daisy Virginia M. McLeod. Mr. McLeod was a graduate of Sumter High School and attended Sumter Area Tech. He was a member of Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include one sister, Mildred M. Norsworthy of Sumter; one brother, James K. “Jim” (Linda) McLeod of Lexington; four nieces and nephews, Mike McLeod of Lexington, Lea Norsworthy of Sumter, John (Ellen) Norsworthy of Manning and Lori McLeod (Eric) Harmon of Lexington; and a number of aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Baynai officiating.

Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1746 U.S. 521 S., Sumter, S.C. 29154.

Beatrice Oliver

Beatrice Oliver, 87, died on Feb. 6, 2006, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

She was born Oct. 10, 1918, in Philadelphia, and was a daughter of the late Suell Forum and the late Katie Blake. Mrs. Oliver was married to the late Aaron Oliver.

Those left to celebrate her life and cherish her memory are one son, Cleophus (Willie Mae) Oliver of Summerton; two stepdaughters, Bertha Thomas of Manning and Maxine Stinnie of Washington, D.C.; nine grandchildren she reared as her own, Dorothy (Roger) Hillard, Helen (John) Briggs, George (Berdie) Green, Elder Albert (Lucielle) Thomas, Edward (Corlette) Thomas, Frosty (Rock) Pearson, Sarah (Willie Lee) Singleton, all of Summerton, the Rev. Charlie (Brenda) Thomas of Sumter and Dorothy Dingle of Columbia.

Mrs. Oliver also leaves behind her caretakers, Willie and Brenda Nelson and Dorothy Hillard, of the home; a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Mount Pleasant UME Church, Panola community. Services were officiated by Pastor Barry Gadsen and Pastor Stanley E. Hayes Sr.

Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Hattie C. Williams

Hattie “Dissie” Charles Williams entered eternal rest at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006.
Mrs. Williams was born in Clarendon County on Dec. 22, 1919, to the late Charlie Charles and Tuda Nelson Charles. She was the widow of Wesley Williams. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Antioch UME Church in her youth. She later joined New Covenant Church and Macedonia FBH Church, where she was the mother of the church.

Survivors are eight children, four sons, Edward (Dorothy) Williams of Pinewood, Franklin (Mary) Williams of Bronx, N.Y., Samuel Lee (Elaine) Williams of Queens, N.Y. and Michael Marshall Williams of Summerton; four daughters, Eleanor (Bill) Stevens of Bronx, Amelia (Lawrence) Pearson of Baltimore, Md., Dorothy (Ernest) Walker and Rebecca (Willie) Parker, both of Manning; 29 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Macedonia Fire Baptist Holiness Church with Pastor Annie Riley. Assisting was Minister Robert Stevens, the Rev. Warren Hatcher, the Rev. Amos Hatcher and Evangelist Elizabeth Blanding.

Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery in Rimini.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charges of the arrangements.

Charles L. Croft Jr.

Charles L. Croft Jr., 71, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at a local nursing center. Born in the Springhill Community of Lee County, he was a son of the late Charles L. Croft Sr. and the late Edith Hatfield Croft.

He retired from Schaefer Distributing Co. and was the owner of Big Charlie’s Lawn Care.

Mr. Croft served in the U.S. Army and was a Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors include five children, Terri (Julian) Simmons of Sumter, Cynthia Croft of Sumter, Charles S. “Buddy” (Sherrie) Croft of Sumter, Robby N. Croft of Columbia and Gene A. (Michele) Croft of Sumter; three brothers, David (Annette) Croft of Sumter, Tim Croft of Alcolu and Mark (Debbie) Croft of Sumter; two sisters, Barbara (James) Barwick and Kay (Thomas) Hyatt of Sumter; a sister-in-law Bobbie Croft of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Sharon Robinson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James R. Croft and Marion Benjamin Croft.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Kirk Baker and the Rev. Jackie Jenkins officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10006.

Blanche M. Evans

Blanche Elaine McCall Evans, 82, widow of Jack Evans, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 5, 1923, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Bruce and Ailene Logan McCall. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Sumter and a retired seamstress.

Surviving are three daughters, Mildred (Charlie) McLeod, Vickey (Ronnie) Hudson and Sandra (Donnie) Johnson, all of Sumter; and a grandson, Brock (Julia) Dennis, also of Sumter.

A graveside service was held Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Brewington Cemetery near Manning with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Jethro McKnight

LYNCHBURG – Jethro McKnight, 50, husband of Mary Johnson McKnight, died Jan. 15, 2006, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

Born Jan. 3, 1956, in Lynchburg, he was a son of Harvey and Mattie Wells McKnight. He received his education in Sumter County and was a 1975 graduate of Mayesville High School. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Asbury United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his wife, Mary Johnson McKnight of Lake City, and parents, Harvey and Mattie Wells McKnight of Lynchburg, include three sons, Jeffery (Victoria) McKnight, Justin and Detreck McKnight, all of Lake City; three daughters, Shanekia, Kimberly and Shalandria McKnight, all of Lake City; four brothers, Harvey McKnight Jr. of Rembert, Tyrone (Gwendolyn) McKnight of Olanta, Randolph McKnight and Raymond (Willistine) McKnight, both of Sumter; two sisters, Priscilla (Steve) English of Lynchburg and Linda (Larry) Evans of New Zion; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 4810 Narrow Paved Road, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Samuel Cooper, pastor, officiating, assisted by Elder Shelley Hickson.

Burial was in Goodman Cemetery.

Florence P. Austin

Florence Pauline Austin, 72, wife of Gene Austin, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at her home in Summerton.

Born Sept. 3, 1933, in Clinton County, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Gehrs and the late Pearl Koch Gehrs. Mrs. Austin was a 1952 graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Carlyle, Ill. She was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Manning and was employed by Sumter Utilities, retiring in 1997. Florence enjoyed working in her garden, traveling, cooking, needlework and most of all spending time with her family and friends.

She is lovingly survived by her husband, Gene; three sons, Steven (Vangie) Daugherty of Clarkton, N.C., Richard (Betsy) Daugherty of Irmo, and Christopher (Twila) Daugherty of Manning; one daughter, Angela (Allen) Buza of Santee; two sisters, Pearl (Edward) Musenbrock of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Lily Day of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Carol Gehrs of Breeze, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Richard, Harry, Fred, Carl and Lewis Gehrs.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father S. Thomas Kingsley officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Sumter.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 395, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Rose H. Johnson

Rose Hasty Johnson, 90, widow of Teddy Miles Johnson, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Walter Thomas Hasty and the late Albertine Loyns Hasty.

Surviving are a son, Teddy Miles (Barbara) Johnson Jr. of Manning; two daughters, Rose Marie (Rudy) Newman of Sumter and Bertine Ruth Knoll of Columbia; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Dianne Mason, and a sister, Evande Hasty Harrison.

Graveside services were held on Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, in the Sumter Cemetery with Rabbi Milton Schlager officiating.

Memorials may be made to Covenant Place, 2825 Carter Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.
