Diane Singleton

Diane “Sketta” Singleton, 43, died Jan. 25, 2006, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

Born Jan. 17, 1963, in Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Mary Singleton. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton.

Survivors include two sons, Jamie and Benjamin Singleton of the home; one brother, Bobby Singleton of Hartford, Conn.; two sisters, Betty Ann Felder of Manning and Rosa Mary (Curtis) Simmons of North Santee.

She was preceded in death by one daughter.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Historical Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Melvin Capers, pastor, officiating, assisting the Rev. L.E. DeLaine.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

Caro S. Bowman

BRONX, N.Y. – Caro Servance Bowman, 98, widow of William Mansfield Bowman Sr., died Feb. 1, 2006, at Hebrew Hospital Home, Bronx.

Born Dec. 29, 1907, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Mary Servance and Fonsa Davis.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006.

McCall’s Bronxwood Funeral Home, 4035 Bronxwood Ave., Bronx, was in charge of arrangements.

Rebecca R. Kennedy

Rebecca Rivers Kennedy, 75, widow of Luther Kennedy Jr., died Jan. 28, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Aug. 9, 1930, in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Joe Rivers and Virginia Smith Rivers. She received her formal education at Howard Chapel Elementary School in the New Zion section of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Melina Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include five sons, Robert Kennedy, Eugene Kennedy and John Kennedy, all of New Zion, Wilbert Kennedy and David Kennedy, both of Sumter; five daughters, Geneva Scarborough of New Zion, Rebecca Kennedy and Barbara Burgess, both of Manning, Suzette Kennedy of Sumter, Katherine McFadden of Turbeville; one stepdaughter, Martha Quickley of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Lucille Gamble of Kingstree; 30 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Scott; one brother, Marshall Rivers; two sons, Alvin Kennedy and Charles Kennedy; and one daughter, Loretta Kennedy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at the Melina Presbyterian Church (USA), Sardinia, with Rev. Carnell Hampton officiating.

Burial was in the Melina Cemetery.

Robert Wilson

Robert Russell William Wilson, 75, husband of Lupe Gonzales Wilson, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born May 13, 1930, in Hamtramic, Mich., he was a son of the late Lawrence and Beatrice Chettleburgh Wilson. He was a retired mechanic and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are two daughters, Frances Russell of Vidalia, La., and Robin (Dave) Freville of Mason, Mich.; two sons, Dan (Tina) Shepard of Fayetteville, N.C., and Darrell (Sharon) Wilson of Hope Mills, N.C.; two brothers, Lawrence (Louise) Wilson of Raeford, N.C., and Jack Chettleburgh of Pontiac, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Dingle

ATLANTA — Ernest Dingle, 57, husband of Ruddell Spry Dingle, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta.

Born Nov. 3, 1948, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Willie Dingle and Beatrice Smith Dingle. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He worked most of his life in construction and moving services. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He was a member of Perry Boulevard Baptist Church, Atlanta.

Survivors include his wife, Ruddell Spry Dingle of the home; one brother, Willie Ray (Corrine) Dingle of Manning; one devoted nephew, Isaac Spry of Atlanta; and one sister, Freddie Lee (Clezelle) White of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. John W. Blow, pastor of Perry Boulevard Baptist Church of Atlanta, eulogist.

Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Jack D. Guthrie

Jack Daniel Guthrie, 79, of Summerton died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, in a Florence hospital.

He was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Gastonia, N.C., to the late Charles Watson and Nannie Douglas Guthrie.

He was a graduate of North Carolina State University where he earned his degree in forestry. Mr. Guthrie retired in 1989 from KTS Industries as an industrial sales engineer. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy as an armed guard. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War.

Among his survivors are a daughter, Betsy (Russell) Rollins of Huntsville, Ala.; sons, Donald (Debra) D. Guthrie of Fleming Island, Fla., and Timothy Scott Guthrie of Texas; a brother, Sam (Nancy) Guthrie of Santee and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Doug Guthrie.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Florence National Cemetery.

Memorials mat be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue D., Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577.

Cordelia W. Hutchin

Cordelia W. Hutchin, 73, widow of C.L. Hutchin, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 8, 1932, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Lillie Mae Wilson and the late Rev. Johnny Wilson. She was a member of Mount Calvary FBH Church. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and Carrollton Technical College, Carrollton, Ga. Prior to her retirement, she was a nurse with several nursing facilities in Carrollton.

Survivors include one son, Willie Hutchin of Carrollton; three brothers, Dr. J.E. Wilson of Hartford, Conn., Robert (Jackie) Wilson of Augusta, and Frank Wilson of Charlotte; three sisters, Lillie Ann Simmons of Silver Springs, Md., Virginia Nell Brandon of Washington, D.C., and Minister Carolyn (Arthur) Bennett of Manning; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one aunt, the Rev. Annie (Myer) Whack of Manning; and one uncle, Eugene Wilson of Manning.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Wilson, and two sisters, Queen Brayboy and Annie Gamble.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at Mount Calvary FBH Church with the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, Elder Keith Smith, the Rev. Odessa McCoy, the Rev. Betty Clark, the Rev. Ethel W. Sweat and Dr. J.E. Wilson officiating.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.

Thomas J. Mason

Thomas J. Mason, 50, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, in Sumter.

Born Dec. 8, 1955, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Louis Jacob and Margaret Gerkin Mason. He was a maintenance mechanic at Santee Print Works and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are a brother, Guy Fairchild of Manning; four sisters, Rosemary Whaley of LaFayette, Ga., Sandy Bayman of Kennesaw, Ga., Terri Brogdon of Berea and Gerre Simpson of Rocksboro, N.C.; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in Autumn Woods Christian Church with the Rev. Tim Brown officiating.

Memorials may be made to Al-Anon, 1 Warren St., Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Harvey M. Shomo

LANCASTER, Pa. — Harvey M. Shomo, 78, of Lancaster, Pa., died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at the home of his daughter, Leslie S. Sheaffer, in Manning. He was the husband of the late Verna A. McComsey Shomo, who died in May of 2004.

Born in Lancaster, Pa., he was the son of the late Howard E. and Dorothy Fawber Shomo. Mr. Shomo retired from the Pennsylvania State Police. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II. Mr. Shomo was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

He is survived by two sons, Patrick H. Shomo of Lancaster and Michael R. (Cynthia K.) Shomo, of Leola, Pa.; one daughter, Leslie S. (Robert C.) Sheaffer of Manning; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; one step-great-granddaughter; and a brother, Robert E. (Molly R.) Shomo, of Millsboro, Del.

Memorials may be sent to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, Pa. 17602, or the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, Pa. 17603.

Dessie H. Wilson

Dessie Holliday Wilson, 90, died Saturday evening, Dec. 17, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 4, 1915, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Johnny Williams and the late Minnie Sweat Williams.

She was married to Howard Holliday, who preceded her in death in 1970. She later married George Wilson, who also preceded her in death. She was a member of Mount Zero Baptist Church, where she served faithfully with the missionary society, usher board and gospel choir. She was also a member of the Manning Branch NAACP and New Light Chapter OES No. 254 for 50 years. In addition, she worked with the nursery department at Manning Presbyterian Church for 30 years and also served as an usher for Fleming & DeLaine Chapel for numerous years.

Survivors include three sons, Morris (Julia) Holliday of Manning, Bishop Raymond (Brenda) Holliday of Sumter and Julian (Gertrude) Holliday of New York, N.Y.; two daughters, Rosa Ann Canty of New York, N.Y. and Dorothy H. (Willie) Graham of Dorchester, Mass.; one sister, Carrie Lee Briggs of Manning; sister-in-law, Donna Richardson of Manning; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and grandchildren reared in the home, Wilbert Holliday, Bridgette Carter and Sharee Carter.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Williams and John Williams; and six sisters, Rebecca, Mabel, Bertha, Rita, Luvnia and Elma.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at Mount Zero Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Henry K. Presley, the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg and the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Richburg.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.
