Roy Andrew Cass, Jr.

Roy Andrew Cass, Jr., 68, husband of Priscilla Davis Cass, died Sunday, January 15, 2006, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born July 15, 1937, in Fairfax, Oklahoma, he was a son of the late Roy A. Cass, Sr. and the late Gladys Stevens Cass. He was a retired gunnery sergeant with the United States Marine Corps, and a veteran of the Viet Nam War. Roy was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning are two daughters, Erin (Scott) Spitzer of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Katherine (George) Curbello of Show Low, Arizona; three stepsons, Jeff (Pam) Currie of Manning, George (Melissa) Currie Jr. of New Jersey and Matthew (Karen) Currie of New Jersey; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of S.C., 1817 Gadsden Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Daisy M. McLeod

Daisy M. McLeod, 84, widow of J.W. “Bill” McLeod Jr., died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest M. McLeod and the late Zula Virginia Geddings McLeod. She attended Manning High School and was a very active member of Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church until her health failed.
Survivors include three children, Mildred Norsworthy of Sumter, James K. “Jim” (Linda) McLeod of Lexington, and Paul W. McLeod of Sumter; four grandchildren, Mike McLeod of Lexington, Lea Norsworthy of Sumter, John Norsworthy of Manning, and Lori McLeod Harmon of Lexington; two great-grandchildren; a loving sister-in-law, Betty Taylor of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel McLeod and Harold McLeod; and a sister, Mary Sue Galloway.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Mike Baynai officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Fraser Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1746 U.S. 521 S., Sumter, S.C. 29154.

James E. Player Sr.

James Edward Player Sr., 86, husband of 57 years to Gladys Currie Player, died Wednesday Jan. 11, 2006, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 22, 1919, in Sardinia, he was a son of the late Edward David and Sudie Wheeler Player. He was a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder for 40 years and served as the clerk of the session. He was a member of American Legion Post 149, “Black River Post,” serving as adjutant since 1948; a board member for Bailey Manor Presbyterian Retirement Home; a retired lieutenant in the U.S. Army, having served in the Pacific and European theaters during World War II, where he received two Purple Hearts. He retired as the general manager of Santee Electric Coop. with 39 years of service.
Surviving besides his wife of Sardinia are two sons, James Edward (Alyce) Player Jr. of Lexington and Hugh Marshall (Cynthia) Player of Greenville; one daughter, Laura Player (Phil) Reeves of Easley; one brother, Ray W. Player of Charleston; one sister, Joyce Player Gibbons of the Isle of Palms; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, in Sardinia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John R. Dodd and the Rev. Dr. Gordon Reed officiating.

Burial followed in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sardinia Presbyterian Church, General Delivery, Sardinia, S.C. 29143, or to a charity of one’s choice.

John A. Bodenheimer

John Albert Bodenheimer, 79, husband of Azalee Roberson Bodenheimer, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Nov. 8, 1926, in Manning, he was a son of the late John Samuel and Lucy Cutter Bodenheimer. He was retired from Santee Print Works in Sumter, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints church in Sumter.

Survivors besides his wife of Davis Station are two daughters, Deborah Flowers of Manning and Sandra Duke of Davis Station; five sons, John Olin Bodenheimer of Manning, Farron Bodenheimer of Davis Station, Roger Bodenheimer of Atlanta, Ga., Glenn Arnold (Renea) Bodenheimer of Manning and Clay (Jennie) Bodenheimer of Manning; two sisters, Jean (Jake) Hunter of Holly Hill and Lee Corbett of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Hazel Bodenheimer of Columbia; a brother-in-law, Rudolph Porter of Liberty; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, David Wayne Flowers and Kimberly Flowers; a brother, Walker Bodenheimer; and two sisters, Marie Pettus and Mary Porter.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Morris Smith officiating.

Burial followed in Ward Cemetery in Davis Station.

Memorials may be made to Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 391, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Sarah S. McBride

Sarah “Nudd” Sinkler McBride was born Nov. 16, 1931, in Clarendon County, to the late Moses Sinkler Sr. and Laura McKnight Sinkler.

She departed this life on Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she joined Antioch RMUE Church, where she was a very faithful member of the Missionary Society.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories, two sons, Randy McBride of Rimini and Leon White of Wilmington, N.C.; three daughters, Dorothy McBride, Blossom McBride and Shirley McBride, all of Rimini; three grandchildren, Fredrick, Brian and Quincy; one great-grandchild, Shadaya McBride; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Sarah Sinkler McBride was preceded in death by five brothers, Samuel Sinkler, Moses Sinkler Jr., Julius Sinkler, Vernelle Sinkler and Odell Sinkler, and two sisters, Nellie Thompson and Molly Brunson.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini with the Rev. Joseph Powell, pastor, assisted by the Revs. William Polite, Leroy Green, Amos Hatcher and Warren Hatcher.

Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of these arrangements.

James M. Morris Sr.

James M. Morris Sr., 84, of Sumter, beloved husband of Johnnie Mae Morris, entered into eternal rest Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James Fennie Morris and the late Rosa Lee Richburg Joyner. He attended Christian Tabernacle Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and also served in the Merchant Marines. He was last employed by Florence Concrete.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Barbara Kay Smith of Charleston, and Renee (Art) Garcia of Sumter; three sons, James M. (Sandy) Morris Jr. and Robert E. Hall, all of Sumter; and Richard P. (Lisa) Hall of Texas; one stepson, Tommy Robinson of Honea Path; one stepdaughter, Betty Baldwin of Honea Path; nine grandchildren, Tracey Timmons, Craig Hall, Derrick Hall, Travis Smith, David Garcia, Bryan Garcia, Shannon Garcia, Trey Morris and Alicia Morris; 13 great-grandchildren; and one half-brother, Bobby Joyner and his wife, Dorothy, of Tallahassee, Fla.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mamie Reynolds and Ruth Scaffe; and three brothers, Henry Morris, Mack Morris and Quinton Morris.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Norman Hamm and Mr. Jimmy Tanner officiating.

Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Crosswell Children’s Home, 11 Crosswell Drive, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Deloris M. Wilson

Deloris Montgomery Wilson, 52, of Columbia, departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

She was born Aug. 31, 1953, in Manning, a daughter of Alma Blanding Montgomery and the late William Montgomery Sr. Deloris was a 1971 graduate of Sumter High School. She was employed at Lexington Medical Center Child Development Center since 1999, where she was able to express her love for children.

A faithful member of Central Baptist Church since 1997, Deloris served as a member of the pastor’s aide club and willing worker’s ministries. She sang her praises with the Combined Voices of Central and the Voices of Praise. She taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

Deloris leaves to cherish her loving and precious memories, her devoted mother, Alma B. Montgomery of Sumter; her beloved son, James (Stephanie) Wilson II; cherished granddaughter, Rebekah Marie Wilson, all of Melbourne, Fla.; three brothers, William (Carolyn) Montgomery of Conley, Ga., Willie J. (Glendell) Montgomery and Edward Montgomery, both of Sumter; a sister, Stephanie M. Brand of Sumter; six sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; 11 aunts; seven uncles; a devoted cousin, Pearl Baxter of Sumter; a dear sister-in-law, Betty Porcher of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, close relatives and dear friends who are deeply grieved by her passing.

Memorial services for Ms. Wilson were held on Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at Central Baptist Church in Columbia, with the pastor, Ricky Ray Ezell Sr., eulogist.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Yancey Boone, Jr.

KERSHAW, S. C.– Mr. Yancey Boone Jr., age 72, of Manning, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in Newberry, S.C.
Born April 28, 1933 in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Yancey Boone Sr. and Evelyn Hopkins Boone. Mr. Boone was a retired fisherman and was a member of New Start Nazarene Church.

Mr. Boone is survived by his wife, Margie Boone of Manning; a son, Danny Wayne Boone of Rock Hill; three daughters, Joyce Ann (Richard) Walker of Fowlers Ridge, Tenn., Ruth (Troy) Looney Jefferson, Ga. and Rev. Patty (Kenneth) Medlin of Greenville; three sisters. Edith (Richard) Carnes of Pageland, Vera Lee Knight and Betty Hayes, both of Kershaw; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Boone were held on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005 at the Cauthen Funeral Home Chapel in Kershaw with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.

Internment followed in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Willie Dave Cooper

LAKE CITY – Willie Dave Cooper, 82, husband of Jannie Wese Cox Cooper, died Dec. 10, 2005.

He was a son of the late Sam Cooper and Elizzie Cooper Thomas. He was owner and operator of Cooper’s Grocery and was a retired farmer.
Survivors include seven sons, Willie Dave Cooper Jr. of Sumter, Alex (Alfreda) Cooper of Manning, Truman (Myrtle) Cooper, James (Dollie Mae) Cooper, Raymond (Nina) Cooper and Cleo Cooper, all of Lake City, and Charles (Tammy) Cooper of Mansfield, Texas; six daughters, Mary Lee (Robert) Snowden, Lizzie (Abraham) Cyrus of Rochester, N.Y., JoAnn Tucker of Orangeburg, Dorothy (Willie) Huff and Barbara Jean Cooper, both of Jacksonville, N.C., and Katherine Singletary of Lake City; 45 grandchildren; and 50 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Faith United Methodist Church, White Oak community, Kingstree, with the Rev. Wyatt C. Minton III officiating.

Burial was in White Oak Cemetery, Lake City.

Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of arrangements.

Louise Dargan

Mrs. Louise Dargan departed this life at her home in Sumter on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005.

Born Aug. 23, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Mary and Ambrose Davis.

She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. As a child, she became a member of Green Hill Baptist Church. She later married the late Samuel A. Dargan. Mrs. Dargan then moved to New York City where she worked for several years.
After retirement, she then returned to Sumter County and rejoined Green Hill Baptist Church. She served on the Gospel Choir for many years until she became ill. However, her illness did not stop her from attending church every Sunday until her home going. She was known for her passion of cooking, gardening and serving the Lord while always helping those in need.

In her passing she leaves to cherish fond memories: her two children, William (Elouise) Dargan of Connecticut and Shirley Mae Davis-Dargan of Sumter; 20 grandchildren, four of whom she raised, Sharrian L. Dargan and Gary R. Dargan, both of Sumter, and Lateesha Govan and Abdulah S. Dargan, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; several great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Gloria Dargan of Sumter and Barbara Dargan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and other relatives and dear friends that are deeply saddened by her passing.

She was preceded in death by two sons, James Dargan and Samuel “Butch” Dargan; and a special and devoted friend, Deacon Robert Bell.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dargan were held on Sunday, December 18, 2005, at Green Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. David Woods, the Rev. W.J. Frierson and the Rev. Queen Darley.

Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Services Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
