Annie Bell F. Epps

Annie Bell Fraizer Epps, 85, widow of Elliott Leroy Epps, died Nov. 29, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 6, 1920, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Reese Frazier and Ethel Fraizer White and stepdaughter of the late Levi White. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ and joined Emanuel AME and served faithfully. In 1999, she returned home and joined Providence AME and, in 2004, she joined Ebenezer Missionary Baptist, serving on the senior stewards, Missionary Board No. 3, Usher Board No. 3, SC-Club, pastor’s aide, and garden club.

Survivors include a brother, Albert (Naomi) Frazier; five sisters, JoAnn Jones, Isabell Miller, Dorothy Belton, Odessie Scott, all of Manning, and Lillie B. (Freddie) Henley of St. Augustine, Fla.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Dinkins Street, Manning, with the Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating, the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, eulogist, assisting the Rev. Annie Riley and Prophet Jannett Middleton.

Burial was in Fraizer Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Bernard Huggins

MILDENHALL AIR FORCE BASE, England — Master Sgt. Bernard “Tubby” Huggins, 33, husband of Akilah Burks Huggins, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, in England.

Born May 17, 1972, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Carrie Huggins and Hugh Conyers and stepson of Deborah Conyers. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1991 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1991. He attended Chapel AME Church in his youth. Later, he joined St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in the Silver community of Pinewood.

Survivors include his grandparents who reared him as their own, Louise and Julious Conyers of the Silver community; one son, Kendrick E. Burks of Mildenhall Air Force Base; one daughter, Savannah M. Huggins of Mildenhall Air Force Base; four brothers, Willie Huggins of Thomasville, N.C., Paul Huggins of Manning, Peter Huggins of Summerton and Christopher Conyers of Columbia; five sisters, Easter (Samuel) Green of Summerton, Azilee Canty, Mary Huggins, Teresa (Lucious) Taylor, all of Manning, and Barbara (Ronald) Martel of Houston, Texas; seven nieces; five nephews; one grandnephew, 13 uncles; eight aunts; three grandaunts; two granduncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Scott’s Branch High School gym, Summerton, with the Rev. Annie L. Riley, presiding, the Rev. W. Scott, eulogist, assisting the Rev. Dr. C. Richburg, the Rev. W.J. Chandler and Evangelist Elizabeth Richburg.

Burial was in St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Silver community.

Blackwell and Jenkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby B. Lowder

Ruby Bagnal Lowder, 61, wife of Jack D. Lowder Sr., died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born June 18, 1944, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late William Taylor Bagnal and Annie Virginia Holladay Bagnal. She was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are a son, Jack O. (Rachel) Lowder Jr. of Manning; a daughter, Jeannie (Danny) Graham of Florence; three sisters, Mary Lee and Rosalie Cooper of Andrews and Annie Dell Sills of Manning; a brother, William E. “Bubba” Bagnal of Manning; four granddaughters, Asheton Lowder and Whitney Ridgill of Florence, and Graci Lowder and Emme Lowder of Manning; a step-grandson, Trenton Graham of St. Stephen; and special caregivers, Mary Wagner and Whitney Wagner.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005 in Wilson Union United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Murdoch officiating.

Memorials may be made to Ruby Lowder Memorial Fund, c/o Grace Christian Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 702, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Travis T. Quattlebaum Jr.

Travis Trevon Quattlebaum Jr. died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was the infant son of Jennifer Renee Griffin and Travis Tyron Quattlebaum.

Surviving are his parents; his maternal grandparents, Shirley Griffin of Sumter and Danny Griffin of Alcolu; and his paternal grandparents, Frank and Veola Quattlebaum of Gable.

Services will be held privately at a later date.

Sarah Ellen Tolen

PELZER – Sarah Ellen McKelvey Tolen, 98, daughter of the late Hugh Caryl McKelvey and Ailene Iseman McKelvey, died on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005.

She was born September 10, 1907 in Manning. She graduated from Manning High School and Winthrop College where she was active in many endeavors, including the basketball team.

Mrs. Tolen was married to the late Johnny Tolen. She taught school for 45 years, including assignments at Lexington, NC and at several schools in Greenville County. She was principal at Ellen Woodside. She was named Teacher of the Year several times and was presented the prestigious Valley Forge Freedom Award for teaching social studies. Primarily a math teacher, Mrs. Tolen was one of the first to teach high school courses on South Carolina Educational Television.

Mrs. Tolen was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary teacher’s organization, County, State and National Education associations, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Tolen was a member of the Lickville Presbyterian Church, which was built upon a plot of land given by her grandfather more than a century ago. She organized the perpetual care for the cemetery there.

While a resident at the Presbyterian Home in Clinton, Mrs. Tolen was active in many activities. She ferried friends to appointments earning her the designation as the operator of “Tolen’s Taxi.” She played bridge, crocheted and knitted items for others until her death.

Mrs. Tolen was a generous benefactor for the Presbyterian Home. She donated funds to build the covered driveway, the covered walkway and a self-serve ice cream machine that residents continue to enjoy today.

She was also a major benefactor for Presbyterian College where she donated several scholarships and sponsored the publication of a book by Dr. Jack Pressau detailing the many service contributions of Presbyterian College faculty and students.
Mrs. Tolen was predeceased by one brother, Hugh Caryl McKelvey, Jr., two sisters, Mrs. Julien (Irma) Weinberg and Mrs. George (Corinne) Tucker, and a nephew, Judge Julien Weinberg.

She is survived by a great nephew, Julien (Pam) Weinberg III of Manning, a great niece, Dr. Ellen Weinberg (George) Boney of Rome, two great-great nephews, Julien Weinberg IV and George William Boney and two great-great nieces, JoAnn McKelvey Weinberg and Hanna Elizabeth Boney; two great-great nephews, Julien Weinberg IV and George William Boney and a niece-in-law, Dr. Sylvia H. (Robert) Clark.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Lickville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Roberts and Dr. Joe Gettys officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Donations in her memory can be made to Lickville Presbyterian Church, 10020 Augusta Road, Pelzer, S.C. 29669.

William B. Logan Sr.

William Bryant (Charlie) Logan Sr. departed this early life at the McNair Nursing Facility in Lake City, after a lengthy illness, on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005.

He was born on Nov. 18, 1930, in Sumter County, to the late Sylvester Logan and Emma Gordon Logan. He was educated in the public school system of Sumter County and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pinewood. He was a devoted servant of the Lord. He enjoyed singing gospel songs. His love for music began at an early age. He was a member of the Golden Stars Singer. While at Calvary, he was a devoted member of the gospel choir, mass choir, male chorus and trustee board. He was employed by Madison Industries (Cover Manufacturing) for 30 years.

He was first married to the late Sally Stukes, who preceded him in death. In 1965, he was united in holy matrimony to Rosa Lee Conyers.

He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife of the home, Rosa Lee Conyers Logan; two sons, William (Bettie) Logan Jr. of Pinewood and Eddie Logan of Sumter; four daughters, Betty E. (Clyde) Coleman and JoAnn Logan, both of Virginia Beach, Va., Carolyn Logan of Pinewood, and Genise (George) McConico of Rimini; one sister, Bernice Washington of Washington, D.C.; two mothers-in-law, Martha Stukes and Mary Conyers; five brothers-in-law and six sisters-in-law, Willie (Grace) Conyers, Vernell (Thelma) Durant Sr., Elnora Palmer, Walter (Deloris) Green, Joseph (Earnestine) Stukes, Willie Boderick and Carrie Stukes; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. E.L. Sanders, the Rev. Dr. D.L. Grant Sr., the Rev. J. Johnson and the Rev. M. Dingle Jr.

Burial followed in the Calvary Churchyard Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Orien D. Billups

Orien Dickey Billups, 100, died Nov. 18, 2005 at the Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born on July 5, 1905 in Manning she was the spouse of the late John “Bully” Billups Sr. and the daughter of the late Moses Dickey and Minnie Williams Dickey.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. She served on the Missionary Society, Usher Board and Mother of The Church.

Survivors include a son, George (Betty) Dickey of Richmond, Va.; two special grandchildren (caregivers), Leon and Irish Dickey of Manning; a nephew she reared as her own, Clarence Wilder of Md.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Manning with The Rev. George P. Windley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Henry McCray and Leroy McElveen.

Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Burke

Mary Camilla James Nunnery Burke, 85, wife of George William Burke, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Spencer James and Christine James Callen Arrants.

Mrs. Burke was a member of Southside Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Willing Helpers Sunday School Class.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 52 years of Sumter; one son, Robert Wayne Nunnery of Manning; two daughters, Hazel Ann Lyles and (Ray) and Barbara Lee Smith, all of Sumter; one daughter-in-law, Anna Ruth Nunnery of Sumter; one sister, Fannie Mitchum of Sumter; one brother, Monty (Tunnie) Harmon Callen of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased in death by three brothers, Miller Callen, Tommy Callen and Gene Callen; one sister, Mildred Gainey; and three grandchildren, Tommy Allen, Christy Martin and Gerald David Allen.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Sumter with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating.

Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 1116 Manning Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Odell Calvin

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Odell Calvin, 36, died Monday Nov. 21, 2005 in McIntosh County, Georgia. She was born on March 28, 1969 in Alcolu. She was a daughter of William Calvin and Eleanor Taylor Calvin.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth she joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church where she accepted Christ. She moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where she was a member of Holiness Believers Church of God and a faithful member. She was employed by Publix in Ft. Lauderdale.

Survivors include parents William and Eleanor Taylor Calvin of the home; two sons, Stephon and Gene Calvin, both of the home, a daughter, Shamekia Calvin of the home; three brothers, Lee (Cynthia) Russ of Wells, Md., William (Andrea) Calvin Jr. of Austria and Joseph (Melissa) Calvin of Manning; 11 sisters, Robertha (William) Meyers, Barbara and Cathy Calvin, all of Alcolu, Ella Mae (Nathan) Brown of Ft. Lauderdale, Joanne (Jerry) Calvin, Mary (Anthony) Burgess, both of Manning, Wilhelmenia Harrell of Mayesville, Shantella Lloyd of Turbeville, Debbie Pearson of Sumter, Beatrice (Larry) Ramsey, Wilhelmenia (Aaron) Cooper, both of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis C. Brock, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Montgomery, eulogist, and Pastors Levi McFadden, Jonathan Anderson and Evangelist Linda Simmons.

Burial was in Francis Cemetery.

Annidell C. Kinlaw

BRUNSWICK, Ga., – Annidell Calvin Kinlaw died Monday Nov. 21, 2005 in McIntosh County, Georgia. She was born on March 28, 1969 in Alcolu. She was a daughter of William Calvin and Eleanor Taylor Calvin.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth she accepted Christ. Later she joined Resurrection Tabernacle of Deliverance where she was ordained as a missionary. In 1997 she was ordained evangelist as a devoted member of the choir and Voices of Deliverance. She later moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and became a faithful member and evangelist at Holiness Believers Church of God.

Survivors include a husband, Johnny Kinlaw Jr. of Manning; three daughters, Goanna, Tanisha and Tiffany Calvin all of the home; parents, William and Eleanor Taylor Calvin of the home; three brothers, Lee (Cynthia) Russ of Wells, Md., William (Andrea) Calvin Jr. of Austria and Joseph (Melissa) Calvin of Manning; 11 sisters, Robertha (William) Meyers, Barbara and Cathy Calvin, all of Alcolu, Ella Mae (Nathan) Brown of Ft.
