Raleigh McFadden Sr.

LAKE CITY – Raleigh McFadden Sr., 90, husband of the late Geneva McKenzie McFadden, died Saturday, Nov. 19, in Florence.
Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Isaac and Emma Rose McFadden. He retired from FCX Fertilizer-Retailer.
Survivors include one son Carnell (Dianne) McFadden of Lake City; four daughters, Emma (Thomas) Eaddy of Lake City, Thelma (Jimmy) Brown of New York, Veola (Willie) Stroud of New Bern, N.C., and Brenda (Mark) Odom of Teaneck, N.J.; and two sisters, Almetta Johnson of Turbeville and Minister Merl D. McFadden of Florence.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville with the Rev. Oliver Davis Jr. officiating.

Burial was in New McFadden Cemetery in Olanta.

Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn B. Morris

Carolyn Brant Morris, 62, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas O. Bryant and Elizabeth Windham Bryant, and widow of Stonewall Jackson Morris.

Mrs. Morris was of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving are four sons, Marvin Freeman, Tommy Morris, John Morris, all of Sumter, and Tony Morris of Manning; one daughter, Janice McCathern of Sumter; one brother, Olin Bryant of Lugoff; four sisters, Rebecca Davis, Peggy Gibbons, both of Sumter, Eva Mae Gibson of Darlington and Wanda Cozart of Rockwell, N.C.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Isgetts.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Driggers officiating.

Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruthie T. Stanley

ST. STEPHENS — Ruthie McFadden Tomlin Stanley, 70, wife of the late Albert Stanley, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, in Trident Hospital in North Charleston.

She was born Feb. 10, 1935, in New Zion, a daughter of the late Robert McFadden Sr., and Pearl McKenzie McFadden.
She received her formal education in Howard Chapel School. At an early age, she joined Howard Chapel AME church. She later joined New Covenant Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in various ministries.

Survivors include two sons, Mickel (Tonya) Tomlin and Henry (Loretta) Rolland; four daughters, Eliza (Morris) Tomlin-Brown, Gearie (Nathan) Addison, Delbert (Robert) Boone and Ella (Jerry) Tomlin-Simmons; two brothers, Robert (Mattie) McFadden of New Zion, Roosevelt (Dorothea) MaFadden of Baltimore; a cousin reared as a brother, Phillip McFadden of New Zion; four sisters, Mildred (Harry) McCray of New Zion, Eula (LaDon) Eaddy, Grace (William) Merritte, both of Baltimore; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at New Covenant Baptist Church, St. Stephens, with the Rev. F.C. Haskell officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray.

Burial was in Old McFaddin Cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Eunice Ridgeway Owens

GODWIN, N.C. – Eunice Ridgeway Owens, 87, formerly of Oceanside, California and Shallotte, N.C. and widow of Roy Owens, died Sunday, October 16, 2005, at the home of her niece.

Born October 6, 1918, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Allen Oliver and Margaret “Maggie” Bell Craig Ridgeway. She was married in 1946 to Roy Owens, who predeceased her in 1969. She was a member of the Person Street United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, N.C.

Surviving are a sister, Margie Ridgeway Bagnal of Manning; a special niece, Dorothy Ann (David) Williams of Godwin; nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ryan Ridgeway; and two half-sisters, Jessie Bell Justice and Ethel Bell.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Manning, with the Rev. Miriam Hadden officiating.

Memorials may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 8178 Moses Dingle Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Rebecca T. Mims

Rebecca T. Mims, 80, widow of Charles W. Mims Jr., died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at a local nursing center.

Born in Salisbury, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Clarence F. Roberts and the late Lottie Mae Roberts.

Mrs. Mims was the owner and operator of the Oswego Service & Grocery Store for a number of years. She attended Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego.

Survivors include five sons, Ronnie (Sarah) Mims, Sarah, Joe (Frances) Mims and Boyd (Christi) Mims, all of Sumter; Floyd (Carol) Mims of Manning, and Kenny (Debra) Mims of Ashwood; two daughters, Carolyn M. Robertson of Sumter and Patsy M. Coker of Union; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Oswego with the Rev. Brian Magaw and the Rev. T.W. Mitchell officiating.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 5575 Lodebar Road., Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Lillie B. McKnight

BALTIMORE, Md. – Lillie B. McKnight, the daughter of the late Ludie and Amanda Ragin, was born Aug. 10, 1913, in Summerton. She departed this life Oct. 8, 2005, at Sandtown Winchester Nursing Home. She lived a long and happy life.

She received her education in Summerton. At an early age, Lillie accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined Liberty Hill AME Church, where she met and married the late Allen McKnight. Out of this union one child was born, who passed very young. Lillie and Allen were a happy couple. Lillie later joined Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton and moved to Baltimore in 1993 and joined Shiloh Christian Community Church. Her charming personality made her a very special and loving woman who kept a smile on her face.

Lillie had one brother, Robert, and four sisters, Rosalee, Suzanna, Hattie and Janie, whom all preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn, her sisters, Mamie Carter, Mattie Green, Esther Berry, Minnie Smith, all of Baltimore, Rachel Washington and Grace Bennett of New York; three brothers-in-law, Earl Berry and Joe Green of Baltimore and Charles Bennett of New York; one godson, George Allen Carter; a host of nieces and nephews; one adopted daughter, Dorothy; one adopted son, J.P.; and two special friends, Deacon Price and Pat Price.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiating.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Fannie E. McElveen

Fannie Ester McElveen, age 90, died Oct. 13, 2005, in a Sumter hospital, after an illness.

Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Frank Wylie McClam and Abigail Viola Osborne McClam. She was a retired waitress and was a member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew J. McElveen, and an infant daughter.

Surviving are three daughters, Cynthia M. Outlaw of Sumter, Andy (David) Smith of Fayetteville, N.C., and Wendy (Donald) Barnhill of Turbeville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial followed in Thomas Cemetery.

Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta was in charge of the arrangements.

Iris Lowder

Iris Evelyn Scott Lowder, 77, widow of Millard Eugene “Gene” Lowder, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at Carolina’s Hospital in Florence.

Born in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Willard Mack Scott and Pearl Juliette Ardis Scott.

She was a member of Pinewood Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son, Charles M. (Pat) Lowder of New Zion; one daughter, Olivia (Jack) Bailey of Manning; two brothers, Willard Mack Scott of Hermitage, Tenn., and Phillip B. Scott of Sumter; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by one brother, Dreyfus Scott.

Graveside services were held on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Sumter, with the Rev. Don Witherspoon officiating.

Katie Diggs

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Rev. Katie Hickman Brown Diggs, 82, widow of William Brown and Charles Diggs, died Oct. 11, 2005, at a local hospital in Baltimore.

Born May 26, 1923, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Mose Hickman and Sallie Garnerd Hickman. She was also the sister of Frances (Paul) Beaufort of Alcolu.

Huelease Blanding

Huelease Blanding, 83, died Oct. 8, 2005, at her residence in Manning.

Born Nov. 18, 1921, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Augustus Blanding Sr. and the late Charlotte Stukes Blanding. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a lifelong member of Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and a dedicated member of several organizations.

Survivors include one brother, Wilver Blanding; two sisters-in-law, Rossetti M. Blanding and Elreeda Blanding; four devoted nieces; and seven devoted nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Bertie Blanding; and two brothers, Alfred Blanding and Augustus Blanding Jr.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Henry Presley, Wayne Blackwell, Terry Johnson and Major Lloyd officiating.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of services.
