Ray Morris Porter

Ray Morris Porter, 90, husband of Yvonne Weeks Porter, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, in Lake Marion Nursing facility in Summerton.

Born June 7, 1915, in Cameron, he was a son of the late Thomas Clarkton and Myrtle Rickenbaker Haigler Porter. He served for two years in the Merchant Marines, worked for thirteen years as a fireman and engineer with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and for six years with the Savannah & Atlantic Railroad. In 1949, he moved to Clarendon County and opened Bud Crowe Lodge on Lake Marion. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Manning, are a daughter Frankie (Hal) Lowder of Manning; a sister, Genevieve P. Milligan of Merritt Island, Fla., nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral home in Manning with the Rev. Ray Moss officiating.

Burial will follow in Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Turbeville.

Memorials may be made to Freewill Baptist Home for Children, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, S.C. 29162.

Arthur ‘Buster’ Plowden Jr.

Arthur Davis “Buster” Plowden Jr., 78, husband of Margaret Baldwin Rowland Plowden, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Dr. Arthur Davis Plowden Sr. and the late Mary Kidd Plowden. Mr. Plowden was a member of First Presbyterian Church, attended Davidson College and was a 1949 graduate of Clemson University, receiving a degree in engineering. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 15, a former member of the Clemson President’s Club, former board member of Banker’s Trust, the People’s Bank, Sumter Coatings, and VB Williams Furniture Co. He was an avid airplane and helicopter pilot and was active in various civic organizations. He was an avid supporter of numerous philanthropic and educational organizations. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world.

In 1949, he started in the construction business. In 1952, he founded Plowden Construction Co. In 1995, he founded Plowden Holding Co. He was a U.S. Army-Air Corps veteran. The family would like to show great appreciation to the numerous faithful employees and friends that have been so supportive during his life.

Surviving are his wife of Wedgefield; two sons, Arthur Davis “A.D.” Plowden III of Sumter and William Ariel Plowden of Penrose, N.C.; one daughter, Jeanne Plowden (Mark) Hall of Brevard, N.C.; two adopted sons, David Plowden and Ronald Plowden; two stepsons, Charles George (Sylvia) Rowland III of Walterboro and Earle (Denise) Rowland of Paxville; one stepdaughter, Louise Rowland (Jim) Burns of Camden; two sisters, Claire Richards of New York, N.Y., and Polly McKay of Hilton Head; six grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel Plowden; three sisters, Roberta Abbott, Eleanor Palmer and Vivian Thibodeaux; and a stepson, Cabell Rowland.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Zane Moore officiating.

Burial was in the Sumter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th. Ave./Bob Hope Road, Miami, Fla. 33136-1494; United Ministries of Sumter County, P.O. Box 1017, Sumter, S.C. 29151; United Ministries of Clarendon County, P.O. Box 73, Manning, S.C. 29102; or to a charity of one’s choice.

Alice Clayton Pearson

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – Alice Clayton Pearson, 49, of Atlantic Beach, Fla., died at her home, Friday, Oct. 7.

She was the daughter of Colleen Brewer Clayton and the late Ralph Clayton of Manning. Alice was an accomplished craftsperson in beautiful, unusual ceramics. Many people will enjoy the beautiful creations of jewelry crafted by Alice Pearson.

Surviving besides her mother of Manning are a son, Clayton Pearson of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; four brothers, Butch Clayton and Randy (Sheila) of Summerville, Jimm ie (Joanne Clayton of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Robbie Clayton of Atlantic Beach; a very dear friend, Tony Longmier; as well as many friends and associates, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins who mourn her short life.

A memorial service was held in Atlantic Beach on Sunday, Oct. 9. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 13 in Oak Grove Cemetery on the Bloomville Highway in Manning.

Memorials may be made to the Harvest Offering at manning first Baptist Church, 49 West Boyce Street, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Louise Thompson, 8278 Moses Dingle Road, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Myrtle M. Strange

Myrtle Morris Strange, 94, widow of Daniel Madison Strange, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, in Abbeville Area Medical Center.

Born Aug. 27, 1911, in Ehrhardt, she was a daughter of the late Jefferson Franklin and Mamie Sue Beard Morris. She was formerly employed by Alderman Lumber Co. and Clarendon Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Yvonne (Bill) Mahon of Carmichael, Calif. and Martha Sue (Wayne) Dukes of McCormick; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Debra Quilling, the Rev. Dr. Steve Shugart and the Rev. Wade Elliott officiated.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102 or to Republican United Methodist Church Building Fund in McCormick.

Edna Lee Way

Edna Jane Lee Way, 80, wife of Reuben H. Way, Jr., died Monday, August 28, 2006, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born September 23, 1925, in Lake City, Florida, she was a daughter of the late Archie and Leila Revels Lee. She was a member of Summerton Southern Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband of Summerton; two daughter, Patsy (Larry) Causey of Sumter and Jackie (Kenneth, Jr.) Hodge of Summerton; a son, Randy (Siel) Way of Bolivia, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Tim Causey, Chandra Robinson, Ken Hodge, III, Lisa Bagnal, Tray Way, Kirk Way, Sheila Way, Randall Way and Travis Way; seventeen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Tracy Way.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Tommy Burgess officiating.

Burial was in the Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Southern Methodist Church, P. O. Box 771, Summerton, S.C. 29148.

Louise T. Berry

Louise Thompson Berry, 88, wife of Leo James Berry, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at her home in Manning. Born June 10, 1917, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Robert Marion and Rosa Cain Thompson. She was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Surviving besides her husband of Manning are two daughters, Lyn (John) Herlong of Manning, Debra (Lucien) Richardson of Summerton; a brother, Robert Thompson of Lake City, Fla.; three sisters, Florrie DuBose of Due West, S.C., Mana Ridgill of Sumter, and Dorothy Rawlinson of Legrange, Ga.; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or to a charity of one’s choice.

Katie S. Massenburg

FORESTVILLE, Md. – Katie Spann Massenburg died Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at Prince George’s Hospital, Cheverly, Md.

Born Aug. 22, 1923, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Spann and the late Carrie McFadden Spann.

Services were held on Monday, Oct. 3, 2005 at Bible Way Temple Church in Washington, D.C.

Pope Funeral Home of Forestville, Md., was in charge of the services.

Otis McGee Jr.

Otis “Mackie” McGee, Jr., 54, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005 in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Feb. 6, 1951, in Florence, he was a son of Mildred Duke Davis and the late Otis McGee Sr. He was employed in building construction, a United States Army veteran having served in Korea and attended Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his mother of Manning are a daughter, Nancy (Joseph) Brayboy of Carolina Shores, N.C.; a son, Chris (Angela) McGee of Las Vegas, Nev.; a stepdaughter, Dale Williams of Florence; three stepsons, Joey Williams, Davey Williams and Ray Williams of Florence; four sisters, Nettie Bell McCutcheon and Bobbie Jean Isgett of Coward, Dyan Munson of Palm Coast, Fla. and Greta Lynn Frey of Cherokee, Ala.; and a number of grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce McGee and his sister, Jane Collins.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Turner officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church, P. O. Box 915, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Edward V. Tindall

Edward Van Buren Tindall, husband of the late Zullar McFadden, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

Born in Manning on June 20, 1910, he was the son of the late Edward Tindall and Maybell Smiling Tindall.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at the Mt. Herman Missionary Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Cass Williams, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. A. Smiling, Pastor F.D. Tindall and Apostle M. Tindall, eulogist.

Interment followed in the Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery in Paxville.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

James Russell Tyson II

James Russell “Teeter” Tyson, II, 49, died Wednesday morning.

Born August 13, 1956, in Clinton, he was a son of Samuel Dixson Tyson and Betty O’Tuel Tyson. He was a graduate of Kenneth Shuler Barber School in Columbia, was owner and operator of Jim Tyson Haircuts and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides his father and stepmother, Cona, of Manning and mother of Myrtle Beach are a sister, Sandy Tyson Cogdell and her husband Charles of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother, Sammy Tyson Jr. of Myrtle Beach; two nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, in Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Capital Campaign Fund of Manning United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 68, Manning, S.C. 29102.
