Nathaniel Weathers

LANCASTER, Pa.– Nathaniel “Nate” Weathers died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, in Lancaster, Pa.

Born Jan. 28, 1948, in Manning, he was a son of the late Charlie Weathers and the late Virginia Hilton Weathers.

Services were held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 005, at Fred F. Groff Inc, Funeral Home in Lancaster.

Burial followed in Mellinger’s Mennonite Cemetery, also in Lancaster.

Minnie Pearl E. Worrell

Mrs. Minnie Pearl Ethridge Worrell, 63, wife of the late James A. “Bubba” Worrell, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Worrell was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late John D. Ethridge and Myrtle Lambert Ethridge Moore. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia T. Kirby of Lake City and Lee Ann Worrell of Manning; four sons, Mitchell Thomas of Myrtle Beach, Ricky Thomas of Coward, Drue Worrell of Manning and Alston Worrell of Sumter; two brothers, Kenneth Ethridge of Alcolu and John Thomas Ethridge of Scranton; one sister, Myrtle Ann Ethridge of Knoxville, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel in Lake City.

Burial followed in the St. Paul Methodist Church Cemetery in Coward.

Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City was in charge of the arrangements.

Cecile P. Johnson

BROOKLYN, N.Y — Cecile Palmer Johnson, wife of the late Adolph Johnson, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn.

Born in Clarendon County, on June 11, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Issac and Hager Green Palmer. Mrs. Johnson attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, George Johnson; one daughter, Geraldine Clark; a granddaughter, Carolyn Johnson; three brothers, McKinley Green, Willie and Charlie Palmer; and a sister, Elizabeth Brailsford.

She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory four sons, Harold (Evelyn) Johnson of Sumter, Emanuel Johnson, Russell (Debbie) Johnson and John (Debra) Johnson of Philadelphia; three daughters, Janice (Willie) Martin of Brooklyn, Sandra Maddox and Georgeann Johnson, both of Summerton; two grandchildren that she raised as her own, Odell Johnson of Summerton and Loretta Johnson of Philadelphia; 39 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at the Oaks AME Church, located in North Santee, with the pastor, the Rev. Nathaniel Bookhardt, officiating.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Warren King Jr.

Warren King Jr., 70, husband of Mattie Cain King, died Oct. 2, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Sept. 18, 1935, in the Wilson Mill section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Rev. Warren King Sr. and Rhedus Dozier King. He accepted Christ and joined William Chapel Christian Church, where he served faithfully on the trustee board. He graduated from Manning Training School in 1956. He was a lifelong truck driver.

Survivors besides his wife, Mattie C. King of the home, include two sons, Delbridge (Del) King of Atlanta and Dwayne (Barbara) King of Manning; one daughter, Debbie King-Miller of Augusta, Ga.; one adopted sister, Thelma Dozier of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three aunts, Ada King, Lue Ida King and Virgiree King, all of Manning; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at William Chapel Christian Church, Greeleyville Highway U.S. 521, Manning, with the Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, officiating, assisting the Rev. Rufus Gaymon.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Lois Hobbs

LEWISVILLE, Texas — Lois Thomas Edwards Hobbs, 82, of Lewisville, formerly of Florence, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 16, 2005, at her residence, after an illness.

Mrs. Hobbs was born in Sumter, a daughter of the late Perry M. Avin Sr. and the late Maggie Johnson Avin. She was a 1940 graduate of McClenaghan High School in Florence and attended the Southeastern Business College. A former member and Sunday school teacher at Greenwood Baptist Church in Florence, she was presently a member of the Lakeland Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class in Lewisville. She was a retired banker and a certified nursing assistant.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jack C. Thomas Sr., L.C. Edwards and Fred G. Hobbs; a son, Gerald A. Thomas; and a sister, Gladys Toney.

Surviving are three sons, Michael H. (Pam) Thomas of Dallas, Jack C. (Suzie) Thomas of Flower Mound, Texas, and Richard H. (Debbie) Thomas of Red Oak, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Linda Thomas of Corsicana, Texas; three brothers, P.M. (Nellie) Avin Jr. and Wallace L. (Martha) Avin, both of Florence, and Joe Ed (Kenney) Avin of Summerton; one sister, Ruth (Coleman) Smoak of Laurens; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Greenwood Baptist Church, 2401 Claussen Road, Florence, S.C. 29505 or to a church of one’s choice.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, in the Greenwood Baptist Church in Florence.

Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lovey Parker

Nelson Hill “Lovey” Parker, 85, widow of Leighton Brown Parker Sr., died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, in Covenant Place in Sumter.

Born Nov. 14, 1919, in Bamberg, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Nelson Wright Hill. She was a retired bookkeeper for MiLady’s Shop in Manning and was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning.

Surviving are a daughter, Sherry P. Twining of Marshall, Va.; three sons, Leighton B. Parker Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas, Benjamin Hill Parker of Silver Springs, Md. and Nelson Russell Parker Sr. of Manning; a sister, Alyce Means of Manning; and three grandchildren, Katherine Parker of Cincinnati, Ohio, Nelson Russell Parker Jr. and Deborah Michelle Parker, both of Manning.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, in the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Jennifer L. Reed

Jennifer Lee Reed, 25, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, in Manning.

Born Oct. 27, 1979, in Baltimore, she was a daughter of Bill Coachman and Terry Hollidayoke Reed.

Surviving besides her father and mother of Manning are two sons, John and Brandon White; a daughter, Brianna White; a brother, Rodney Reed and wife, Christy, of Manning; and her maternal grandfather, Dennis Hollidayoke of Annapolis, Md.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug., 23, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. W. Kevin Cribb officiating.

Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Anniefay Singleton

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Anniefay “Fay” Singleton, a daughter of the late Cyrus Singleton Sr. and Azalee Robinson Singleton, was born July 24, 1950, in Pinewood.

Fay departed this earthly life on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at Kings County Hospital, in Brooklyn.

She attended St. Paul Elementary and Scott’s Branch High School in Clarendon County. Fay was reared in a Christian home. She attended Central Baptist Church in Brooklyn under the pastorate of Dr. Lenora C. Owens. Fay was adored by all who came in contact with her.

She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, a loving niece (daughter), Lakeisha Singleton, and her nephew (son), LaShone Singleton of the home; one special niece, Monique (Temo) Brown of Brooklyn; two devoted sisters, Eva (Preston) Stukes of Brooklyn and Shirley (Alphonzo) Ragin of Summerton; five devoted brothers, Leon (Ruth) Singleton of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., Marshall (Linda) Singleton of Brooklyn, John (Gloria) Singleton of Baltimore, Md., Hezekiah Bannister of North Carolina and Benjamin McFadden of Harlem, N.Y.; a special nephew, Kenneth (Yolanda) Stukes of Long Island, N.Y.; two special nieces of the home, Linda and Daquana Stukes; two loving aunts, Julia Springer of Brooklyn and Gardenia Stukes of Silver. Also left to treasure Fay’s memory is a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and loving friends. She leaves a good friend, Charlotte Johnson of Brooklyn.

She was preceded in death by one son, Micheal Shone; two sisters, Joyce Singleton and Frances Singleton Greene; one brother, Cyrus Singleton Jr.; two uncles, Aaron Robinson Jr. and Haskell Singleton; and two aunts, Paralee Dawkins and Mary Singleton.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005 at New Hope AME Church in Panola with the Rev. Nathaniel Edwards officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Summerton Funeral Services was in charge of the arrangements.

Archie Brock

Archie “Archie Ball” Brock entered into eternal rest on Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born in Clarendon County on Oct. 21, 1946, he was a son of the late David Brock Sr. and Emma Smith Brock. He was reared by his grandmother, Louisa Postell Smith. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon School District One. He worked for a number of employers including the City of Thomasville, N.C., Boss Bakery in Thomasville, and the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Sumter. He was brought up in the St. John Baptist Church, Silver.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Lee Brock, and a sister, Emma Mae Brock.

He leaves to mourn his passing two sisters, Maggie Butler Robinson of Summerton and Betty Brock Johnson of Columbia; three brothers, David Brock Jr. of Summerton, Pastor Nate Brock and Elmore Brock, both of Sumter; four aunts, Louise Conyers and Lois Smith, both of Silver, Willie Mae Glisson of Philadelphia, Pa. and Lillie Mae Pearson of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at St. John Baptist Church, Silver. The Rev. Dr. Cokely C. Richburg, host pastor, and Pastor Nate Brock were the eulogists.

Final resting place was the church cemetery.

Dyson’s Home for Funerals of Summerton was in charge of the arrangements.

Ria Melle Gentry

Ria Melle Venning Gentry, 64, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born Feb. 22, 1942, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Alton Venning Sr. and the late Elizabeth Hepburn Reed Venning. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning.

Surviving are one son, Thomas Connors Gentry III of Columbia; two brothers, Herbert A. (Gloria) Venning Jr. of Summerton and Samuel Riley (Peggy) Venning II of Beaufort; one sister, Thomasine Venning Smith of Sumter; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, in the Summerton Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, S.C. 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
